I get what you're saying but it was meant to be a Test flight not an ad. They just needed some dummy payload so why not a Tesla? It was a bonus and a lot cheaper than just launching a rocket for an ad.
That was my gut reaction too but the rocket was going to be launched anyway. As long as the mounting hardware cost less than a concrete dummy weight being made and mounted it's advertising cost functionally zero.
Gotta put some payload in a test flight anyway, so it was either loading up a big block of concrete or loading something else that is heavy enough to prove that the falcon heavy can carry the load to orbit. The Roadster was Musk's own car (on which he payed full price as he always does), so it cost the company zero dollars to do this, yet it shattered the internet:-)

Build your brand around solving revolutionary problems 4. Create brand advocates that are passionate about your brand and what it stands for
Step 1: make a product so good while so cheap, that none of your competitors can offer anything similar. Both Tesla and SpaceX are first of all a revolution in terms both in terms of the technology to create the product, which lowered the cost a lot, but on top of that the products themselfs are a revolution. Self driving electic cars with a range long enough so it would be a reasonable car for your family or as a business car (not to mention not looking like shit like the BMW car lol).

Illuminated the type of people who are interested/inclined to buy a Tesla, would rather order it online and have it show up in a couple months than deal with a dealership. Not even about the cost savings, it’s convenience. Don’t want to spend hours shopping in dealerships and filling out paperwork.
The trick is that the vehicles speak for themselves, traditional auto makers have to try to sell you the same vehicles every year. Tesla made a good car first and let that sell itself.

The graph around 2:20 is misleading. For every other company, the graph is comparing percentages of advertising budgets not the actual budgets or even percentages of yearly budget. It also appears that Tesla was not a part of the original graphic given the font is of a different size.
This comment section is everybody talking about how great Elon Musk and his products are. Which is cool. That’s great and all. Just interesting that the people clicking on the video don’t need to be convinced of anything in the video.

Yes but if I only have a car company then I can't do it for $0, to do it I first need to build a Space company and a rocket to do that $0 advertising. It's like Google sells it's Pixel smart phone by advertising on Google website whereas Samsung has to spend on marketing because it does not have a search engine website like Google.
