Excellent. Fix the CAUSE. I got a p0420, and every shop tried telling me just replace the CAT for $1,800. NONE of them wanted to look at anything else to find the source of the problem. The problem was severely carbonized spark plugs not burning fuel effectively and leaking liquid fuel into exhaust sytem clogging the CAT. replaced plugs, cleaned the CAT, intake and ran some fuel system cleaners. Been running ever since

Great thing to hear. Saving Big bucks. I have the same thing with my C C. I have tried many things because the bash has litten up like a Chistmas tree, and the wind shield wippers are driving me insane. So I unpluged the fuse. It also say on the computer Blind Spot System need survice. But when I start up in the morning or when ever the the engine is cold it blinks and all the warning lights come on.

First I would like to start off by saying I watched this video from the very first second to the very last second and I must tip my hat off to you sir. You are very straight forward, informative, precise and honest! I wish I could find a quality and honest mechanic like you where I live. I'm not sure where you're located or if you have any contact info, but I would surely become your loyal customer. The reason I say you're honest is because as soon as you turned that vehicle on after the installation was over with and that check engine light went away... you could've easily fooled everyone and told us there you have it folks the check engine light is gone because we fixed the problem. You sir did not do that. You told us the truth! When disconnecting the battery cable(s) from the battery it essentially clears any codes stored in the vehicles computer/memory (which is true). I respect and admire you for that.
I have a 2007 Hyundai entourage limited V6 3.8L and I have a P0430 code. I'm doing everything myself thus far and in doing so I found a lot of cutting corners from every "mechanic" that has worked on my car in the past 6 years or so. I'm not a mechanic by any means and I'm learning as I go by researching and reading. Every shop I have gone to so far... everyone says it's the catalytic converter, but not the two that you changed. They're saying it's the catalytic converter that's underneath the car. No one has done any tests of any kind to determine if it is in fact that catalytic converter. They're just saying it's that one. My gut is telling me it isn't, but again I'm not a mechanic and I could be wrong. The car runs like a champ! You wouldn't think there's anything wrong with it. I do know the fuel is either too rich or lean because my gas gauge is always fluctuating up and down before finally settling and before this code appeared I never had fuel issues. Some times from the muffler I can smell a very rich gasoline like smell. I was also told to first replace the spark plugs and go from there. Start with the smaller stuff before changing the catalytic converter to see where the problem is coming from. I've already changed that and all the O2 sensors, but the check engine light came on again with the same code of P0430 bank 2 catalyst system efficiency was below threshold for a predetermined period of time. I'm just now sure which catalytic converter it could be.
Would you be able to share what name brand and model # obd2 you are using so I can look into purchasing one?
I'm sorry for this long message, I appreciate your time and the time you put into this video for us. I hope to hear from you soon. Take care!

    • @KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair
      @KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair  3 года назад +6

Luis Rodriguez, I really did appreciate your comment I read the all message, thank you for watching the video... the scan tool I'm using in the video is a professional type scanner, since you're working on your own vehicle I would not recommend that kind of scanner, you should get a regular OBD2 scanner that can graph data parameters from your local parts store...
Now, about the P0430 trouble code that keeps coming back on your car, I will say,
you should check the wiring of the 02 sensors especially the one after the catalytic converter, then double check the sensors in case you got defective sensors out of the box, if everything checks out ok the last thing would be a bad catalytic converter,
if you end up replacing the cat, make sure you determine the cause that caused it to fail before you replace it...
I have a couple of videos on this channel that can show you how to test the 02 sensor wiring or the 02 sensor itself.... Good Luck

@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair thank you for responding! Not sure what's a good scanner that can do the same as yours or close to what yours can do. I'm very meticulous when it comes to doing things and that's why I asked. If you have any recommendations I'd gladly appreciate it. Which catalytic converter would be the one that I would change if it does come down to that? Is it the one underneath the car or is it the one you changed in the video? Thanks again for responding and have yourself a great night.

Hello K, I would like to point out the difference in temperature between the intake and output is not near the 100°f degrees you stated it should be.
The temps on the old defective Cat were:
    Intake: 390.5°f
    Output: 334.4°f
    A difference of 56.1°f
The temps on the NEW Cat was
    Intake: 404.3°f
    Output: 336.2°f
    A difference of 68.1°f
The difference in temperature between the old and new is only 12°f degrees.

Had the same issue (code p0420 bank1) on a 2000 Acura Integra but car ran perfectly fine. Heard about CATACLEAN and decided to give it a try as my mechanic said it was the cat that was bad. Poured in the entire bottle ($27.99 at AutoZone) when I had 1/4 tank left (per instructions) and drove it for about 100 miles. I noticed a boost in power right away but CEL was still on, I had to reset it and drive another 20 miles or so and when I checked with scanner again, all monitors were ready and no CEL. Took it to my smog station and passed with no issues. Great product which if it wouldn't have worked, this was going to be my next step.

Now a P0106 (MAP performance/range) is coming up in pending and actually turned on the check engine light after I filed and gapped plugs . I watched the MAP reading along with trim numbers. MAP readings did something funky a few times that correspond to idle and performance. It's on an 2011 Sonata 2.4L. Gonna clean throttle and intake, change oil replace plugs maybe a sensor. Then clear light. If I have to pull O2 sensors and check pre and aft-cat pressures if the p0420 rears it's head again. Then again those gdi engines burn through oil over time.

@ 27:17, you said, "the outlet temperature should be a lot cooler than the inlet temperature". I think you mean the opposite. The downstream side of the converter should be 100-200 degrees F hotter than the inlet because of the extreme heat generated in the converter due to catalyzing the NOx molecules apart. That is why the is extra heat shielding around the converter.

I thought the same the outlet should be hotter by at least 100 degrees. What I noticed was that when you replaced the cats.the outlets were cooler than the inlet. So now I am confused. Before you replaced the cats, the outlet was the same as the inlet temp. After you replaced the cats, the outlet was cooler than the inlet.

Thank you so much for taking the time to record this video and share it with us. Like many have stated, it is one of the most comprehensive and easiest to understand videos on the topic! I do have a question regarding the scanner readings. Towards the end of the video when do your final checks with the scanner, while sensor 2 in bank 1 shows a constant signal (flat line), the sensor 2 on bank 2 shows some signal oscillation. What does that mean? Does it mean that sensor might be on its way out?

Hi K, Try to give your repair center location/address in the description in the videos. Most of the mechanics explain stuff but not in detail. Also, right now it’s important to show that you know what you are doing and earn customer’s trust which is important. You have a great video out there. I hope your hard work pays off and earns you a great reputation. BTW I also saw a few videos pouring gallons of lacquer thinner and driving upto 2500 rpm for 150 miles after erasing P0420 code. Do you recommend it as well? Do you still need to do EM/PCM reset? Lastly, you think you can put dielectric grease in all the screws just to be safe so they can come off easily next time? You can also edit and put a note in the video about the inlet/outlet temp correction for folks otherwise you will get a lot of comments again and again :). Keep the interesting videos coming!

If you suddenly have codes popping up, ask yourself this. "Has my battery gone completely dead recently or did I change the battery myself" If yes, drive your car through the manufacturer specific, driving recycling procedure to re-boot your computer. A lot of things can be fixed by just idling from a cold start for a few minutes while turning on every electricity item in the car. AC, rear defroster, radio, lights, etc.

When I hear them being cut off and stolen in minutes by thieves. I have a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria V8 with a P O 430 code. Would this vehicle be as difficult for parts removal? Some cars have their cats farther away from the engine like underneath center of the car. Those are easier to get to and replace. Thieves can get to those vehicles cats easier plus they use a Sawzall to cut it out quickly. If you look underneath your car the catalytic converter comes before your muffler.

Fantastic tutorial! I wish I had easy access to you. I had the expensive experience of two dealership techs tell me independently of each other that both of my 4Runner's cats had to be replaced (with associated sensors), only to determine correctly, on my own, that the problem was the fuel pump, not what they diagnosed. They relied too much on their diagnostic devices, and didn't go beyond that . I relied on my old-school experience, and got it right.

The rear o2 is following the upstream wideband sensor ( same as this bad CAT) indicated the Cat dooen't work it should be BUT o2 drive cycle never run. Question is that without o2 readiness monitor is not running, CAT monitor can be run as in this case ? Still leaning toward bad cat prevent the oxy sensor from running ... you deserve a million subscriber and more
