    According to an anthropologist friend of mine there is no such thing as race. The concept is a construct created by anthropologists to categorize different looking groups of people that have developed unique physical traits over time. We are all mostly homosapiens . Many of us have genes from Neanderthals and Denisovans. There is another hominid that has been discovered through genetic evidence but no fossil record has been found yet. I believe the genetic evidence is centered in the region of the Tibetan plateau and it is thought some of the genetic make up helps support the ability of the people to thrive at such high altitudes. We are homosapiens. Welcome to the family. It took 13.78 billion years for each of us to come to fruition. Be good, be kind, and help make the world a better place

    • @ManLikeChesh
      @ManLikeChesh 3 года назад

      Theres no difference between Polar Bears and Grizzly Bears. They are constructed for us to categorise Bears.
      The categories were made to represent physical and biological differences that we can plainly see.
      Your friend should have gave you a full explanation, I'm sure if he's an Anthropologist he can't be stupid enough to just say "race is a social construct" like that makes it irrelevant.
      Without those "social constructs" you would believe God made the Earth in 7 days. You would definately not know natural selection and the theory of evolution.
      Let me ask what is not a social construct? Nothing is real to a social constructionist lol

      @@ManLikeChesh A black and a white person can have more genetic similarities than two white people. So what race is a half black and half white person? Educate yourself instead of making up misinformed pseudo intellectual dribble. Humans are mostly homosapien's and many of us neanderthal and denisovan genes. The concept of race is irrelevant unless describing physical differences just like height or weight. Your argument is pathetic. To answer your question . Mountains, water and air are not social constructs, money and the economy are

    • @jerelull9629
      @jerelull9629 3 года назад

      "Race" is meaningless also because it's been taken to mean about the same thing as "species", which ain't the case. Two different species can rarely interbreed successfully. It's patently obvious that the various "races" don't have that problem. As far as I'm concerned, they're all *PEOPLE,* and should be judged as individuals. Still, I and some friends get nervous when amongst a group of differently-tanned folks, even when it's a safe area of the Caribbean. In the British Virgin Islands, my then-girlfriend & I were walking down a street and came across a bunch of black kids playing half-court basketball. Lots of motion & jostling about, and a bit unnerving at first -- until I compared it to kids in my neighborhood playing the same game. IMO, "black" should be no more offensive than calling someone who has red hair a "redhead". BUT it seems some folks reserve the right to be offended by darn near anything. *I* was just starting to get comfortable with "black", a self-description at the time, when some of them decided on "African-American" for some reason, which I think is inaccurate & lazy. Note that I haven't talked this out with my friends with really great tans ;-) One of my co-workers and I would compare tans at the end of the Summer. No big deal, just playing. I also said to him when he showed off the new pic of his daughter, perhaps her graduation photo:"Her Mom must have been a real stunner to come out looking THAT good." Why yes, she was, and he did something pretty stupid to lose her(divorce).

    • @ManLikeChesh
      @ManLikeChesh 3 года назад

      @@jerelull9629 We are all homosapiens and are like 99.7% related. So we should be treated equally.
      To say we are not different "species" is intellectually dishonest at least.
      Evolution happens when 1 species is split into geographically seperate locations.
      They then develop mutations that stay within their own geographical location.
      Skin colour, genetic differences, Nose size, sweat gland production, lip size, Sickle Cell ect.
      Thats scientific proof of seperate evolution. Interbreeding is not proof enough that we are the same species.
      So yes we are different "species" in the biological scientific sense. But i find that fascinating, not an excuse to discriminate.
      Scientific truth overrides emotional appeals unfortunately.

    They seem to gloss over the reasons why humans evolved to make such assumptions. Until recently, if you were going about your life in whatever time period and a group of people suddenly appeared on the horizon that physically looked, dressed and spoke differently than you, it was probably not going to end well for you. They were not friendly neighbors coming for a chat but probably invaders. People instinctively recognize that which is different with fear and mistrust until they learn otherwise, because in the past doing otherwise probably got you killed. The easiest way to recognize such threats, is visually. There are other reasons for racism but this is at the core of it.
    The problem is that this instinct is no longer practical in a society where many of us now intermingle with people of other races or cultures on a daily basis. Unfortunately, it is not a simple thing to disregard our base instincts.
    Education helps, but racism will remain until humanity reaches a state of unity, where there are no threats from outsiders and as the saying goes, that a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet. That's not happening any time soon.

    Great video! A very well put content, although when you speak about people who discriminate by skin color I feel you fail to mention that the color is not the main factor but it is the socio-economical and behavioral stereotypes that are attributed to these people by the culture they are present in because racism was different when slavery was practiced, as it differed in the time of Jimcrow, as it was in segregation and now (the sterotypes attributed to the same group in each are a bit different for example some slaves would sleep in the master's house but in the 30' a black man couldn't dine at the bar of the restaurant nor could he drink from the same water fountain), this point is also valid to the n' word because culturally it has become a taboo when non black people say it because of the way it was used to degrade them, I guess the line of thinking is that a black man will not call another the n' word in a "degrading" as it is perceived when a white person does so...

      Agreed. Some people try to simplify these complicated social aspects of humanity to sound intelligent or superior. Even a scientist can become racist if he or she is constantly denied a job over somebody of a different race/ethnicity. They thoroughly understand the science behind the behavior of the people discriminating against them but that doesn't make their emotional reaction to it any less.

    This where I have major issues with Non-Asians calling Asians "Yellow People" or "Yellow". First of all Asians skin tone or color is CLEARLY NOT YELLOW. Their skin tone or color is BEIGE. If Asians' skin tone or color is "Yellow", they would have a medical condition know as "Jaundice", which is the yellowing of the skin caused by liver disease, obstruction of the bile duct, or by excessive breakdown of red blood cells...in layman's terms. And, clearly all Asians on Earth DOES NOT have Jaundice.
    And, one last thing...during the 1800's, citizens of the US would use a slang and derogatory term to call other people a "coward" as well as other derogatory terms. And, the slang and derogatory term they would use is "Yellow". That said Non-Asians during the 1800's would call Chinese Emigrants, who had traveled all the way to California from China during the Gold Rush era to have a better life, "Yellows" or "Yellow People" because they would perceive or think the Chinese Emigrants as "Cowards", because the Chinese would rarely fight back whenever Non-Asians would give them any trouble. Clearly Asians AREN'T "cowards".

      @@FaiaHaloHey, Faia. Sure. No need to apologise. Fundamentally, open discourse is the gift the internet gives us. It is essential to use it. First of all, if you weren’t looking for a long reply, TOUGH. You got one. And, assuming you aren’t English, please accept any English idioms I may use with good humour. Also, you may find some of my qualms with the content of this video to be quite pedantic. But that’s who I am. And you asked :D
      5:42 No. Mass migration over the last 500 years? Try tens of thousands of years. Maybe more. The oldest human being (homo sapiens) remains were found in what we now call Morocco and radiocarbon dating suggests they are around 300,000 years old. There are also remains dated around 200,000 years old in Eastern Africa. It is very likely homo sapiens have been migrating into areas with less exposure to UV light (the key determinant in melanin count) for over 200,000 years (as suggested by human remains found in both Israel and Greece.)
      6:49 No. Enslavement has rarely been based on skin colour. Slavery, at least 12,000 years old (as old as the Neolithic revolution in Mesopotamia), has mostly been used simply as an economic tool. Slavery is undeniably profitable. Just ask The Babylonians. The Pharaohs. Mansa Musa. The banking cartel. Steve Jobs. Or that Amazon guy. It is true the phenomena of grouping people into races was created by Europeans during the North-Atlantic slave trade. Contemporary Europeans weren’t happy about enslaving fellow Christians, so the sick fuckers embarking on the American conquests invented race to justify slavery. This was around 400 years ago, long after the invention of slavery. Incidentally, the only landmass not to have endured mass enslavement is Australia. Everywhere else on our planet, human beings of all skin-tones have enslaved one another in varying forms.
      1/3

    • @ChefRojo
      @ChefRojo 3 года назад

      7:43 As I have already mentioned, the oldest verified home sapiens remains are roughly 300,000 years old.
      10:57 The invasion of the Americas by Europeans, including the Spanish, was abhorrent, brutal, and totally unfair. Obviously, people of native ancestry are not Hispanic and shouldn’t be described as such. However, for those amongst all contemporary Americans who are of Spanish descent, Hispanic is as plain a term as say African-American, or Irish-American. It does not carry weight with it. The guy even says, it is merely the Latin word for Spanish and/or Spanish speakers (anyone who is a Spanish can, in the context of linguistic, be called Hispanic.) Two of my closest friends are from Argentina. Their lineage is Spanish. They speak Spanish. They and their family are fine with the term Hispanic and use it to describe themselves. Because it is objectively true. My Peruvian friend, however, would not use it to describe herself (outside of her use of language). But she doesn’t find it offensive (she’s too smart to get offended by words, even when mis-used.) She doesn’t use the term for herself simply because it isn’t true. And she knows people make mistakes. She accepts her own fallibilities, as well as those of others. Another example of this would be my own heritage. I’m Irish. When I travel, people from all parts of the world say I’m British. This is incorrect. But I don’t care. And I usually won’t correct them unless conversation warrants it. One of the people who routinely calls me British is Cecelia, my Peruvian friend. She doesn’t say it with venom, it’s just a mistake. Somebody not knowing something so banal, unimportant, and made up as nationality is absolutely no reason to take offense. Race, nationality… it’s all make believe. It isn’t real. So why take it to heart?
      12:48 “I don’t know who came up with it”. I’m amazed that someone making a video about race on an educational channel doesn’t understand the roots of the terms surrounding race, and the obvious intentionality of the blurred lines and many grey areas.
      18:30 While possibly more accurately called thought-patterns as opposed to religions, Taoism and Ruism are the major religions of China. In fairness, it is difficult to survey as the country is officially atheist and some practitioners of the more traditional religions don’t actually count themselves as religious.
      Just to make something clear, there are no races (or nationalities). Skin tone and national borders are just fences, that keep us caged, and categorised. Dipping your toes in to anthropology and/or human biology will quickly demonstrate this myth to you. This is why my comment regarding this video, to which you have so graciously replied, states “the underlying message is true, and morally virtuous”. I do stand by the video, there are just a few inaccuracies
      Race is simply a mechanism to individualise us, and to subsequently divide us in to tribes. Always has been. It prevents these tribes from uniting. A united human race would ultimately end all societal problems. It really is that profound. But this isn’t what the people that instigate this division want. Unfortunately, people have been not only conditioned to attach themselves to certain stupid cultural memes of identity (including race, nationality, gender), but have also been nurtured in to selfish, fearful, empty-headed drones that cannot think for themselves, simply regurgitating falsehoods, and inanities. Too prone to believe what they’re told by “the authorities” … purposefully mis-educated, and uninformed. (School for most people is simply a microcosm of society, where a teacher, usually the prime embodiment of the selfish, fearful, empty-headed drone that cannot think for itself, represents authority, and embarks pointless, monotonous tasks upon vulnerable children who don’t know any better SPECIFICALLY to turn them in to selfish, fearful, empty-headed drones that cannot think for themselves, destroying their creativity, and stamping out the ember that is their potential.) This whole point is bluntly summed up in the video at 4:24 “Most humans are too lazy to think for themselves”. And this laziness is sickeningly not an accident.

This is pertinent because the term race has its roots in slavery and also because those who propagate the existence of race are, themselves, suffering a form of slavery. Slavery is alive and well. It’s just more… subtle, and finely tuned by those that benefit from it. It takes many forms. From the South-east Asians whose only choice is to work in shitty conditions for little remuneration, to the debt-slave, working away at some menial, pointless job they hate to pay a mortgage or rent. Literally paying for shelter. Just take a step back and consider that. People are forced to labour and PAY for the roof over their heads only because they did themselves the dis-service of being born. “DUHHHH, I LIVE IN A FREE COUNTRY, DUHHHH”. We’re fucking idiots for putting up with this. But, again, “… selfish, fearful, empty-headed drones that cannot think for themselves”.
      One of the greatest arguments against race is the “melanin factor”. If we are going to divide people in to races, what are those races? How does one qualify? What melanin count specifically denotes white-ness/black-ness? What about people who are blatantly somewhere in the middle? What about indigenous Americans? South Asians? South-East Asians? Indigenous Australians? All groups of people who have developed higher levels of melanin but have lower melanin ancestors (humans started becoming lighter as they moved in to what we call the Arab peninsula, the Caucasus, and south-western Asia. Then, in some cases, including those listed above, gained more exposure to UV light by migrating in to more equatorial or altitudinal areas, and so developed higher levels of melanin.) And why, if melanin is so important, don’t we term different races through body parts other than the skin? Melanin is responsible for eye and hair colour. Are red-haired people a different race to black-haired people? What about grey haired people who used to have brightly coloured hair?! And why stop at melanin? There’s nothing special about it. We all have it (apart from all the lovely albino folk). What other genetic factors can we use to decide race? Height? Hooded eyes? Metabolic rate? Blood type? Presumably all other genetic factors that are just as obscure (but maybe less obvious) would have to be taken in to account. And then you would literally have every single individual human ever ever EVER to have existed, being of a different “race” (with the exception of identical twins, triplets, quadruplets and so on…) This would be completely pointless.
      The big question; why all this unnecessary segregation? Specifically to divide. People who believe they are a race, or are somehow different because of where they were born, or some other inane characteristic, are themselves abject slaves. More so, when they display pride in such banalities. Anyone who says the sentence “I am proud of…” and ends it with any characteristic they were born with and was superimposed upon them, forever tagged to their “identity” (such as race, gender, or nationality) is basically telling you they are incapable of independent thought. Moreover, pride in itself is the absence of humility. And, unfortunately, such thinking is a barrier to a civilised human society.
      The peaceful, educated answer to questions of race and nationality is “I am a human, from Earth.”*
      Again, I am aware this is a long ass comment. My friends often groan and tell me to shut up when I get going XD But I can’t help myself. I guess it’s just me. To summarise, I’d like to say humans of all genetic construction are beautiful. Our existence, as vessels for the replication of DNA, is nothing short of miraculous. But, as a society, we can do so much better.
      Peace and love, Faia.
      *Any non-Earthlings reading this, I humbly apologise if you, like all Earthlings, are also composed of the carbon-based self-replicator DNA (and could therefore logically argue we are all the same race and from the same universe.) However, I believe that would be too much of a coincidence! And, frankly, doubt your existence (or at least the importance of it.)

      The reason why you still like it is that (1) you are a dude- and I am guessing cisgender - and they are accompanying their bare minimum factual content with hot female models in attractive outfits, smiling at you as if they wish they could just spend their whole day with you. It is the youtube info video equivalent of phone sex.
      And notice I stopped at (1) ?

    Minor item: You use the term fMRI without indicating what it is. AFAICT, it can indicate areas of increased blood flow in the brain and that is taken to mean those areas are doing the mental processing of that type. I also have a bit of a problem with your presenting your conclusions as facts without explaining them. *Show your work.* please.

    Your hand gestures are out of sync with your voices, did you stand there in masks while listening to yourselves and then made the gestures, voices dont sound muffled like it should behind the masks..Why the masks?.... by the way. And why you talking to us like we are first graders? ...Moving along swiftly to something a bit more intellectually satisfying.

    Why did you get so offended by the pronunciation of Iran? It's fine to educate people on the correct way but you seem way too upset about it.

      For two people focusing on how ignorant humans are in this video, they seem rather ignorant to the fact that many of the names or pronunciations for other nations, people etc. that people use are rooted in the phonetics or grammar of their language. They may pronounce it as I-ran not Ee'ran because that it how an "I" as a syllable is typically pronounced in the English language. Spain doesn't even call themselves Spain; that is from the English dialect. The same goes for China or many other nations. It is like taking offense to someone's accent to act in the manner that the host did. It should only be taken as offensive where there is a historical origin or meaning to the word, that actually is offensive (whether that was the intention or not).

      @@Dragon_Fyre i think if your language would pronounce something a certain way then ok you pronounce it like that, every language pronounces things differently. But if you want to go to the effort to pronounce it the way the native language pronounces it then ok, good for you. But i dont think it should be forced on people.

    What the F are you guys even doing here? Is the alien thing supposed to project objectivity? (weird enough to see 2 guys with masks reenacting a very dry speech) Also youre getting way to caught up by wordplays. Just because a word is maybe illogical that doesnt diminish their common understanding and interpretation. You might wanna rethink this ... brother ... .

      @no privacy Don't get me wrong, Im a sucker for being precise in descriptives. Words have power. But questioning the validity of the term "African American" - Im not sure how this helps the overall issue regarding racism and bias. I think thats annother, way less pressing, discussion at best.
      Ofc it wasnt all bad, but for some I just thought: "Ok, so what"?

    I am a liberal democrat but you lost me when you criticized the guy for mispronouncing Iran. Mispronouncing a word is not racist. If one lives in Georgia or New York you will pronounce America differently. Is that racist also?
