    1. Christianity did not come with tidings of great joy, but with a message of eternal grief. It came with the threat of everlasting torture on its lips. It meant war on earth and perdition hereafter
    2. Take from the church the miraculous, the supernatural, the incomprehensible, the unreasonable, the impossible, the unknowable, the absurd, and nothing but a vacuum remains
    3. The inspiration of the bible depends on the ignorance of the person who reads it
    4. Why should I allow that same God to tell me how to raise my kids, who had to drown His own?
    5. With soap, baptism is a good thing.

Ingersoll is my favorite atheist writer of all time. "Some Mistakes of Moses" is a brilliant piece of writing. I wish I was alive to hear him speak. A couple of my favorite Ingersoll quotations (aside from the ones mentioned in this video):
-"Infinite punishment is infinite cruelty, endless injustice, immortal meanness. To worship an eternal prison warden hardens, debases, and pollutes even the vilest soul. While there is one sad and breaking heart in the universe, no righteous being can be perfectly happy. Against the heartlessness of the Christian and Mohammedan [Muslim] religions every grand and tender soul should enter solemn protest. The God of Hell should be held in loathing, contempt and scorn. A God who threatens eternal pain should be hated, not loved - cursed, not worshiped. A heaven presided over by such a God must be below the lowest hell. I want no part in any heaven in which the saved, the ransomed and redeemed will drown with shouts of joy the cries and sobs of hell - in which happiness will forget misery, where the tears of the lost only increase laughter and double bliss.
The idea of hell was born of ignorance, brutality, fear, cowardice, and revenge. It testifies that our ancestors were the lowest beasts. Only from dens, lairs, and caves, only from mouths filled with cruel fangs, only from hearts of fear and hatred, only from the conscience of hunger and lust, only from the lowest and most debased could come this cruel, callous and bestial of all dogmas."
-"God has always resembled his creators. He hated and loved what they hated and loved and he was invariably found on the side of those in power."
-"Most of the gods were pleased with sacrifice, and the smell of innocent blood (burnt to reach the gods in the sky) has ever been considered a divine perfume."
-"Remembering that only a few years ago men, women, and even children, were imprisoned, tortured and burned, for having expressed in an exceedingly mild and gentle way, the ideas entertained by me, I congratulate myself that calumny is now the pulpit's last resort. The old instruments of torture are kept only to gratify curiosity; the chains are rusting away, and the demolition of time has allowed even the dungeons of the Inquisition to be visited by light. The church, impotent and malicious, regrets, not the abuse, but the loss of her power, and seeks to hold by falsehood what she gained by cruelty and force, by fire and fear. Christianity cannot live in peace with any other form of faith. If that religion be true, there is but one savior, one inspired book, and but one little narrow grass-grown path that leads to heaven. Such a religion is necessarily uncompromising, unreasoning, aggressive and insolent. Christianity has held all other creeds and forms in infinite contempt, divided the world into enemies and friends, and verified the awful declaration of its founder-a declaration that wet with blood the sword he came to bring, and made the horizon of a thousand years lurid with the fagots' flames."
"The barbarian prays to a rock he calls god and the Christian prays to a god he calls a rock. Both prayers will be equally (in)effective. To utter a prayer, to count beads, to abstain from food, to sacrifice a lamb or a child or an enemy, are all simply ways of accomplishing the same superstitious objective, and all are offspring of precisely the same error. For my part, I care nothing for what the religious say except that which accords with reason. And the Bible is nothing to me but a collection of discredited myths and fables. All books should be examined in the same manner, and truth should be welcomed and falsehood exposed, no matter in what volume they may be found."

Thank you for this. More people need to know about this great man. I have only recently discovered Robert G. Ingersoll. What can I say? He is my new hero!
I discovered him when I came across one of his quotes and wanted to learn more about him. I searched Wikiquote and found him there. The quote (paraphrasing): "As long as woman believes in the Bible as her charter, she will be the slave of man. The Bible was not written by a woman. There is not one word of praise for her. Within its leaves are nothing but shame and humiliation for her."
I searched my local library and there is not one single book or reference to this great man. His name is not even in the card catalog system. :( Thank god for RUclips!

It's like Ingersoll is the Good-Twin while Rush is the Evil-Twin.

Though I generally agree with his views, I will take his literal interpretation of the bible as ignorance or intentional. I don't know which is worse.

I think that the idea of the "forever burning hell", which is NOT TAUGHT IN THE BIBLE, led this man to be an agnostic. If you are apt to think of a god who will burn His creatures in Hell forever then you will believe anything else about Him. On Calvary I see a God who was willing to be burnt for sinners!
