Erma Bombeck wrote about buying an RV as a naive couple, struggling with it, and selling it to another naive couple in "When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home." This is an excellent depiction of that kind of experience!
The best day was when we sold our camper trailer. Why? Well after my family of 5 lived in it for 20 months while our house was remodeled after Hurricane Laura destroyed it, the sale meant we were really done with that stage of our life. We had wanted to start camping before the hurricane and after, we never wanted to set foot in a camper. The retired couple who bought it were happy and so were we. It served us well and paid off our van so it was awesome!
My best friend lived in a camper while her key's home was repaired after Irma. I can't get her to even consider an RV now to travel with me. It's so sad.
Bought a van in 2019, definitely totally unaware of what to look out for. Within two years almost everything broke down. It’s been probably already 5-7k in repairs only. New tires, that’s a thousand. Solar panels. New wiring. Roof window wasn’t sealed so had to replace it entirely and remove all the mold. We are still romanticizing about the trips we could do as a family with our daughter, that’s why we aren’t selling it (yet). But it’s been definitely a total waste of money!
As previous full time RVers, this was spot on 😂 One of our biggest mistakes was not pushing in the black tank lever after flushing it. Then when we went to dump the next time we got a nice surprise. 🤷♀️🤦♀️ It was a great day when we sold our 5th wheel and moving into a house again.
This is almost scary. My wife and I have been working on a used rv and I had to drop it off last week because we found out the AC and fridge weren’t working. Paid the repair guy… $1k to fix it. It’s like they know my life. Again scary.
When I was little my parents rented an RV to go up to Canada on fishing vacations. I loved it so much that one year the night before we were set to go I just went out to that RV and sat in it, nothing else. Just happily sat in the RV.
@@alexh4935 Really depends. If you are only going to use it 11 days a year, like the majority of people then definitely rent. But if you want to actually travel for months at a time it will definitely pay to buy one. My RV has paid for itself many times over. It's so much cheaper and more comfortable than hotel rooms. And my little doggy can be with me without any hassles!
We just got back from HT reservoir a couple weeks ago with a rental. . Imagine my surprise when I send this to my husband( cause we are literally discussing buying one since then, and it made me chuckle) & he spots US in our spot in the background!!! It's the big brown bus😜 He was like," I saw them filming but thought maybe they were vlogging!" ( but couldn't understand why you would need such a big boom looking mic)🤣😆 We definitely did not talk to your wife about pineapples 🙈
@rebekahtablante327 mm2:38 mm3:30-3:40👌😆 we had our canopy set up, blue stroller outside, and even a couple kids you can see made a cameo!😜🤣 I just can't believe this came full circle, seeing as how our RV was breaking down THE ENTIRE TIME!😂
The fact that the owner's wife kept the car running while they were talking about the RV should have been their first clue. 🙂 By the way does the mechanic have a brother who owns a marine store?
I’m convinced when Taylor wants to buy something he gets it by telling Heidi “this would make for a great video!” And then it does make a great video and then he has the thing he wanted 😂
This is hilarious! We bought a used trailer a couple years ago. There was a dumb shoe rack bolted to the floor next to the bed. I thought that was a terrible place for it so I decided to remove it. Thats when I found the huge hole in the floor 🤦♀️😄
We had three years of bliss, then everything started breaking, then my husband started asking me every other month if I wanted to sell it. We still have it, and I love it, but it absolutely has it's ups and downs.
We bought a new 5th wheel and had it for 2 years. It was fun and then our 3 kids started sports/gymnastics and we rarely had time to take it out anymore. It became a very expensive driveway decoration so we sold it.
I LOVE mine. The main time I was almost done with it was when the sunroof in the bathroom sprung a leak that proved difficult to fix. Suddenly the RV didn't feel safe and secure anymore. But, it's fine again and back to being my happy place.
So true! But we love the advantages so much so that we lived & traveled full-time in our 36' motorhome (towing a small truck behind) for 12 years! We finally got to rhe point of " that will be 1k -" actually make that 3k is average! So we found our forever home here in Kentucky and gave up that lifestyle. It was fun and was worth it for us!
Hmmm, this is how I felt about boats, but my RV 🥰😍💓💯. Not having to sleep in someone else's used bed is HUGE, the $ you save by making some of your meals during vacation is HUGE (not all, you are on vacation, just some). The community and nice people in an RV park is amazing, nearly everyone is friendly and instantly your friend. Beats staying in a hotel 100 different ways!
LOL, yup. Romanticized about living on the open road 2 years ago. Still do actually, but we settled on a travel trailer (no motor to go bad and we can drive away from campsite with the truck), and we mostly do state parks. One big trip a year though.
Best thing about RV resale value in 2022 we bought an RV in 2019 for $24k sold it in 2022 for $20k so we basically rented it for 3 years for $4k and we sold it to camping world.. they resold it for $35k
You bought an RV manufactured before covid and that makes a difference. Not sure if the one you bought was also a 2019 but the quality of RV's manufactured in the past few years has gone downhill. One couple bought an RV at the beginning of 2020 and sold it a year later for more than they paid. Camping World, sad to say, is among the worst RV dealerships.
We were completely shocked by the experience. RV resales were hot in 2022. The RV we bought was used bc they guy who bought it new in 2019 used it one weekend didn’t like the configuration then had to sell it so we got lucky and got a “used” rv for way less than it was when he bought it. Believe it or not it’s a true story.
Bought a perfectly good 1988 chevy-powered motorhome for $750 at an estate sale. I spent a total of $100 fixing a couple little things, and I ended up replacing one of the already almost new solar panel batteries for $150 so I'm still under $1,000 all in. I've been living in it for the last 3 years and I drive it everywhere every day and I've never had a single problem, it runs and drives like it's brand new. They don't build them like they used to. Buy an 80s or older model and you'll never have to fix a thing. They were built to last. Now they're made out of cardboard Staples and plastic parts. Buy something in the 80s or the 70s models and you'll be driving it everyday with zero issues
You're definitely not a mechanic. Buy something 40 to 50 years old you won't have a problem he says. Cheese and rice my guy... That's the most "I won the lottery, you can too!" dumpster fire advice I've heard in a long time.

RVs are kinda like buying a boat. It can be a hole in the woods you just keep throwing money in. We did 3 nights 4 days at Yosemite from San Diego. The local RV rental place wanted a $1500 cash deposit for mileage. We decided to drive close to the park and rent there. 6.5 hour drive in our car. Picked up RV and drove 35 mins to our spot. It was mid April and a light rain. We parked and had our car to see the sights. We were warm and dry and could cook if raining. Returning it we topped off the gas and propane and the rental was under $400. Less than a room and about what one month payment for a similar purchase would have been. They showed us how things worked before leaving. There are luxury RV rentals available from a little to allot more. Best part is if there is a break down the bring you another one. RV not wife.
Back in the early 80s, my parents got a new Coleman Pop-up. Immediately after, a piece of hail went through the roof. They had to replace the whole roof. But I have so many childhood memories from then.
We are 100% this family haha. Swore we'd never own an RV cause it's cheating... then... we full time RVd through the states (we're Canadian) with our 4 kids, slept in 28 states, drove through a bunch more.... did yellowstone, yosemite, joshuatree, the Appalachian mountains AND SO MUCH MORE. Still own the RV 😂
This was almost my exact RV experience, except I didn't get the satisfaction of dumping mine on some other poor unsuspecting schlub cuz one day it just caught fire and burned to the ground...lol
Also love waiting a month or more for service to be done to the RV. “Make an appointment to bring in your RV … but we’ll have it back for you in 80 days.” 🤦🏽♂️
My first camper experience is when my now father-in-law’s RV broke down while we were mid turn on a road right outside of Sturgis, SD during the ralley. We had all kinds of angry bikers flipping us off and saying all kinds of things, like we had just decided to just stop and get out and look around in the middle of an intersection. Scary at the time, but hilarious now. Haha!
I bought a used RV and it broke down partway on the grass in my condo's entrance. The manager literally yelled at me and said I wasn't allowed to park there. I explained I was broken down and she said "well you can't break down HERE!"
As someone who is single, I would totally get an RV and live in it for awhile. My family doesn't have an RV but we've gone plenty of road trips and I'm glad to be from a family that likes to travel.
If you are spending 70 grand on an rv then it might not be worth it. We bought a 1990, 28 footer for 6,000. The guy that had it, had it in pristine condition for the age. We pretty much hit the jackpot with it. Just our trip from the west to east coast and back for the month was worth it. Traveling with kids is a must. Automatic bathroom built in with cold drinks. It's seriously the best!
Haha! We once bought a motorhome for $1000 (very similar to the one you got but much older) and we thought we would fix it up. It was previously owned by a single mom and her two teenage daughters. Black water tank had all kinds of “do not flush” products in it. That should have been our first clue that we were in trouble. Started to “remodel” the inside and discovered major water damage. Gutted the entire thing and realized there was no possible way for us to save it. Ended up scrapping the siding and throwing away most of the interior stuff except the stainless steel oven. The only journey that motorhome ever took was when we moved and I towed it behind our van out to our new place in the country. There it say behind our barn until we moved and gave it to the neighbor. Now we have a newer and much nicer motorhome that we use as a bedroom and shower in our warehouse. RV living inside a building isn’t all that terrible LOL
But it doesn’t have the part where you give it to the neighbors for free & then feel a great sense of relief every time you see it in their driveway instead of your own 😂
My cousin recommends renting one first so you get the feel of rving. also if ANYTHING malfunctions the store takes care of it, of course I found this out after my challenges of a truck camper.
i think in order to stop this endless cycle, every old RV when it gets too broken down to be worth fixing should be rolled into the Grand Canyon which will become the official RV cemetery where all RVs can RIP
We bought a trailer trailer new. Paid for it to go on an ocean liner and not driven up for delivery. Best decision we made buying that camper. We've taken it from the Arctic Circle and all around. Only thing that has broken is the glass that covers the stove. You have to keep tinkering with everything to keep it all good.
I am reminded of the six stages of a project in the military- Inspiration, Perspiration, Exasperation, Search for the Guilty, Punishment for the Innocent, Awards for the Bystanders.
BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand and RV's are the same. But they are SO WORTH IT. Just got back from Alaska. Also just paid $400 unexpected dollars to fix my door that I didn't expect to break suddenly. Living the dream.
Hahahaha, this was us just a few months ago! We really did get a great deal and have been very happy with it. Still haven’t figured out how to make the water heater work yet

As your dad mumbled "HRSHMORGORBAHGOM" while mom covered your ears.

That was you along I-90? I totally waved!
If I was your dad it would have been the other way around, get that tire changed boy like I taught you while I sit in the chair and wave at peeps.

The lisp guy is my fave!
"That'll be about a thousand."🤣
Back in the early 80s, my parents got a new Coleman Pop-up. Immediately after, a piece of hail went through the roof. They had to replace the whole roof.
But I have so many childhood memories from then.
We are 100% this family haha. Swore we'd never own an RV cause it's cheating... then... we full time RVd through the states (we're Canadian) with our 4 kids, slept in 28 states, drove through a bunch more.... did yellowstone, yosemite, joshuatree, the Appalachian mountains AND SO MUCH MORE. Still own the RV 😂
What type of RV is it please?
@@NaimaMompoint starcraft lexion, sleeps 10 (6 comfortably though)
Already knew you were Canadian when you said ‘the states’
The runaway after the sale is hilarious 😂
6:01 Heidi should have said something like "I dunno, I can't even feel it" or "I dunno, I can't tell if it's out or in" or something.. haha!
Lmao we really should have looked up here before we bought this thing. Hahahahahaha
This was almost my exact RV experience, except I didn't get the satisfaction of dumping mine on some other poor unsuspecting schlub cuz one day it just caught fire and burned to the ground...lol
Yellowstone, Yosemite, Quebec, Panama City... lol quite an itinerary😂
We are at “the buyers with zero knowledge” stage!😮
Quick! Revert to Stage 1 - RELUCTANCE!
Rent a similar RV to the one you are looking at buying and take it out for at least a weekend.
Same
Even funnier than the “Boat”. That’s it! Now you have to make one of these for everything! Gold ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A brontosaurus or Chris Christie🤣🤣🤣 💀💀💀
Also love waiting a month or more for service to be done to the RV. “Make an appointment to bring in your RV … but we’ll have it back for you in 80 days.” 🤦🏽♂️
This is why I do my own work, especially when renting it out, if something is broke I don't have 90 days to wait.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY the 'bout a Thousand Guy!! As soon as I started watching I KNEW he HAD to show up!! 🥰🥰🥰
As someone who is single, I would totally get an RV and live in it for awhile.
My family doesn't have an RV but we've gone plenty of road trips and I'm glad to be from a family that likes to travel.
this video literally sums up rv life in a nutshell lol
Yep
hi youtube
RUclips commented! Lol
Can we have dislike back?
If you are spending 70 grand on an rv then it might not be worth it. We bought a 1990, 28 footer for 6,000. The guy that had it, had it in pristine condition for the age. We pretty much hit the jackpot with it. Just our trip from the west to east coast and back for the month was worth it. Traveling with kids is a must. Automatic bathroom built in with cold drinks. It's seriously the best!
I hear the older models are made better and more worth it. 👍
My wife and kids love the camper. When we travel they love that their bathroom is right behind the truck😂.
Dude Dad, love that y'all are dipping your toes into the #RVLife!!! Maybe we'll see you on the road this Summer!
Now you have two boats in your driveway😂
Ahhh, let the good times roll!!😊
Excellent story!! The unhappy camper story 😊😜
We got rid of our trailer 7 years ago, this brings back so many rookie memories.😂😂 thanks!
But it doesn’t have the part where you give it to the neighbors for free & then feel a great sense of relief every time you see it in their driveway instead of your own 😂
As my tent camping family is about to pick up a travel trailer tomorrow. Nice timing 😂.
My cousin recommends renting one first so you get the feel of rving. also if ANYTHING malfunctions the store takes care of it, of course I found this out after my challenges of a truck camper.
I had to Google what upside down pineapple meant. And I'm Rolling!🤣😂
You made me google it 😂
I don’t get it but I’m afraid to Google it…
@@desdencove It's a swingers symbol. I looked it up lol
@@sitcomchristian6886now I gotta google swingers
Its the midwest national fruit
I own a class A motorhome for 8 years now. We have such a good time in it. Most of the stuff you can fix yourself, just like owing a house.
i think in order to stop this endless cycle, every old RV when it gets too broken down to be worth fixing should be rolled into the Grand Canyon which will become the official RV cemetery where all RVs can RIP
Make sure to get a certified inspection prior to purchasing.
Sure, Craigslist, Offer up or Google certified?
@@aronob NRVIA certified
If you have been doing your own maintenance and camping 20 plus times a year you will be a good inspector.
Bro the guy jumping into the car was so smooth
So so true, but love every minute of it!
Yep, just like my husband. Always will be a tent camper.
Upside down pineapple… we’ve gotta find a new campsite. Hilarious!!!
Right? Yikes
It was fun running into your family at breakfast! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
Slide out! Slide out! 😂
IS TRUE!! LMAO 🤣 🍍🍍🍍🍍 I first heard the rumors at Costco! Upside down 🍍 "Swingers." That's what she said!
As an rv owner this is pretty spot on lol
I am reminded of the six stages of a project in the military- Inspiration, Perspiration, Exasperation, Search for the Guilty, Punishment for the Innocent, Awards for the Bystanders.
This very clever. I love the guy with the two dogs.
BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand and RV's are the same. But they are SO WORTH IT. Just got back from Alaska. Also just paid $400 unexpected dollars to fix my door that I didn't expect to break suddenly. Living the dream.
We as a family LOVE watching “dude dad”!!!! Thanks, dude dad for making people laugh! May the Lord bless your family!
The Schmidts
PS
Awesome video!
Watching this while sitting in my RV, HILARIOUS!!!!!
Oh my god! This……..especially the end was how I felt when I sold our pop up 😂😂😂😂. Did buy an enclosed but the learning curve was spot on!!!
Hahahaha, this was us just a few months ago! We really did get a great deal and have been very happy with it. Still haven’t figured out how to make the water heater work yet
This very clever. I love the guy with the two dogs. This is very clever.
The way the guy is swinging the dogs around. Lol ❤
the jumping in the windows dukes of hazard style of was a nice touch, well done!
Our AC was $2k! $1k is a deal!!!! Lol this is so hilarious! We love our travel trailer though!
Ours is 10K for three, 2k is peanuts! LOL.
Where... WHERE DO I BUY THAT VAN
When he came out with the 2 dogs and described everything wonderful 😆
"The other rators" I love it !!!
That's why we settled with a 300hp sea doo PWC. Easy to launch, store, ride etc. It's been flawless!
Replaced the "Otherators"? SOLD!!!😂
And the blinker fluid😂🤣😆😂🤣😆
Omg ….thanks for making this video. I now feel better about being too poor to buy/own one.😂😅😂
Service technician is my favorite character!
Surprise blast of laughter at the Brontosaurus line!!
“What’s this?” 😂
I love you guys. Always making my day. My wife and I want to by a travel Trailor since we bought a big truck
There is so much truth to this. Not to mention the wait time on repairs
As a mechanic who has worked on a lot of RVs over the years, this is exactly what we picture when you say you bought an used one. Hahahahaha!
