Domestic cats haven't really been house cats for that long. They still have natural instincts, even if they're a bit out of shape from all the pampering. This cat was probably hoping to go unnoticed and then found itself in a situation where if it ran the bear would think of it as prey and go after it. Better to stand its ground and bluff until the bear backs off. Even small cats can quickly do serious damage to the eyes and nose of bigger predators and give themselves some chance of escape after a surprise attack.

In comparison, house cats have kind of lost that those feelings and don't realise how dangerous it can be to attack anything.
Domestic cats haven't really been house cats for that long. They still have natural instincts, even if they're a bit out of shape from all the pampering. This cat was probably hoping to go unnoticed and then found itself in a situation where if it ran the bear would think of it as prey and go after it. Better to stand its ground and bluff until the bear backs off. Even small cats can quickly do serious damage to the eyes and nose of bigger predators and give themselves some chance of escape after a surprise attack.
