- Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple/stupa in the world. It is located in Java, Indonesia and was built in the 9th century. The monument is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The monument consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. The temple is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa. (Wikipedia)

When I see this place, I really regret the Bamiyan Buddha statue in Afghanistan was destroyed by Taliban. Even though Indonesia is not a Buddhist country but they still well preserve it and becomes one of the best place to visit in Indonesia.

Honestly just blows my mind looking at this. This was built in 800 AD, over a thousand years old, and it is so incredibly well made. I think a testament to human ability, any alien would be impressed.

Well If any one deserve praise it must be the Dutch and British. Borobudur was burried by volcano eruption and covered by vegetation. No one really care abt it not even those Java rulers who identified themself as decendant of dynasty that built borobudur until the western explorer discovered its ruin. Thanks to them it was excavated and later when Indonesia gain its independence, Indonesian government continued its restoration. I'm Indonesia btw but I think we should not take the credit that does not belong to us.

Impressive temple! It is the literal representation of the mandala design concept, a cosmological diagram of the universe. It is amazing how this is visually and physically a path to enlightenment starting at the base and culminating in the highest level where the single stupa is placed. I really hope that some day I get the chance to complete this pilgrimage💕
This site is was built in the location where god allegedly descended from the heavens. The Stupas are bell shaped with human statues in the middle. For me this is just another ancient representation of some form of vehicle, possibly a UFO. Almost all ancient civilizations have a creation story or a story of enlightenment by god and coincidentally like 99% of them have to do with beings who appeared from the stars or heavens (space). I dunno just my opinion.
@@randy7879, i think so, that these stupas were a kind of aircrafts originally, which they (the asian people) used in ancient times, but it was forgotten, so became a spiritual, religious symbol. Even the american indians mentioned, that the ancient people was able to build and use aircrafts-they called them as "flying shields".
@@EridanuS86 Ya I agree like the Vimanas in ancient Indian sanskrit texts of the Mahābhārata or the South American golden airplane trinkets, even the Inca had stories of flying canoes, i believe all these to be the earliest descriptions of flying machines they witnessed theres just way too many similar stories of these ancient flying machines to the point where we have to either admit there is some truth to what they all saw or that all these civilizations all across the globe knew eachother and were making up similar fictional stories, personally i believe the former and that they saw something so spectacular they decided to commit thousands of men and man hours to construct these monuments to reflect what they saw.
There was a global civilisation in the past, when people had a same language and according to the tales, they was much more taller humans than us and lived longer life. Even in the Bible is written as Babel, the first so called city or civilisation in the post-flood world. I think all the later less advanced civilisations possessed them as a gods and worshipped what ever they made as idols.

Amazing temple. Whoever commissioned it picked a great site to build it on with it being surrounded by the mountains.
Nothing has changed, the conditions are still the same with a dozen years ago. Last to the Borobudur Temple in early 2001 and the weather there was hot. The tropical climate and the influence of the activities of Mt. Merapi, which is on.

m.julian actually Borobudur was found when the British fought Indonesia, well one of the British found Borobudur in a very damaged condition, almost swallowed up by the earth but the Indonesians would repair it about 9 months after Borobudur had been repaired the same as when it was completed by the Indonesians there is a story where the borobudur temple is not where we know, actually borobudur was almost hit by a volcanic explosion and the smoke covered all parts of borobudur but an unexpected thing happened the borobudur temple suddenly disappeared in a few milies and was found again by the Indonesians for missing it's the Borobudur temple, so Borobudur was not a place that we know so much. Well, I'm curious, I know where because I'm a native Indonesian, my grandfather was part of the makers of the Borobudur temple
The temple is quite close to my hometown of Djogjakarta. Everytime I go home, it is my sanctuary to be here just relaxing thinking about my ancestors of how skillful and how intelligent they are. Buddhism spread throughout the world, creating a variety of cultures. There are not many Buddhist statues in the rock in our country. In Indonesia, there are many Buddhist statues in the rock. Since Indonesia is a maritime nation, it seems that it has absorbed various cultures.

indonesia is a muslim country now. buddhism is allmost extinct in this country but it preserves its ancestral cultures .
We Indonesian is even too proud for this heritage. Probably we consider this more like cultural heritage rather than religious heritage. Once it was attacked by terrorist several years ago, and it really hurt mostly indonesian people. No wonder we preserve and secure it well....a little bit strict even.

The Temple is really breathtaking and magnificent in architectures and building skills. Ancient people are aweinspiring, building majestic wonders like Pyramids, Greece and Roman Buildings, Bodobudur, Ankorwat, Indian and Chinese Walls and Palaces, Thousands of Pagodas and Temples in Bagan etc... Manmade wonders!

Milosh, to me it is nothing short of miraculous how these structures built so Long ago remain as beautiful and in such a state of preservation. Indonesia a nation shaken so often by earthquakes, wars and internal strive from its beginning to the Dutch occupation, and the Japanese occupation during WW1, to its independence. To me it is a miracle how this nation has survived so many vicissitudes, again thanks for sharing.

It was in ruins until the 19th Century, from neglect (the Muslim kings never destroyed it but had a superstition that anyone who visited it would be plagued by evil spirits). The dutch were just as bad... it was the British who restored it during their brief rule.

There is no Ganesh in Borobudur Temple coz It is a Buddhist temple. u can find Ganesh in Prambanan temple, not far from borobudur

A minor nitpick from me is that you aren't using Javanese gamelan for background music, because, after all, Borobudur is a Javanese made building. Not to mention Gamelan instruments reliefs are also found carved on Borobudur.

During ashoka time majority people practice buddhism thats y till today majority of structures found belongs to buddhism their gurukuls monastries you people claim their things !! After ashoka death who killed buddhist ?? Who announced bounties on their head ?? Thousands of buddhist killed by radical brahmins and their goons just because of jealousy ! Destroyed their monastries schools mostly captured and convert to mandirs ! Same time majority buddhist fled to other parts of asia and we clearly see today buddhism flourished in thailand myanmar nd other parts same monks who fled the bloodshed unleashed by brahmins ! Only reason because ashoka accept buddhism his whole cabinet change brahmins replaced by monks they gave him advice other official duties brahmins got jealous knowing they cant loot or make money in the name of religion or dharm and when ashoka died hindu started killing buddhists destroyed their homes monastries schools ! Thats y you dont have anything to show all the monuments schools belongs to buddhism !

Borobudur is the biggest Buddhist temple in the world, Prambanan is one of the biggest Hindus temple in the world, but now, no Buddhist and Hindus people surrounding both of the temples anymore. In fact there are hundreds temples across Indonesia and all of them are safe in the largest Muslim country in the world. No single temple had been changed become a mosque. Religious tolerance is amazing this country.

The wonderful fact is this temple built in Islamic majority country and especially in Islamic majority region as well. Buddhists still use this temple eventually in peaceful and welcoming hospitality
Wrong.. it was built when Java was ruled by a Buddhist monarch. It was built around year 800.
Islam just came in around 1600 in Java ..
