I just returned from Indonesia and visited Candi Borobudur, Mendut, and Prambanan. I opted to arrive at Borobudur in the morning to watch the sunrise. The experience of climbing the temple and gazing out at the ground fog, with the jungle foliage and banana trees piercing through the ground fog as the sun rose, was absolutely magical and beautiful.

Sorry, just a minor pronunciation correction. Indonesians pronounce the letter C in Candi not as a K sound but as CH as in Chimpanzee.
This is the most impressive building ive ever seen in my whole life. We were on a distance of 5 km of it,but we could already see it.

Just being there and feeling the energy was so amazing. I have never seen such a magnifcent site ! If you go see to it that you have a guide, I was blessed to have such a perfect one it made this trip unforgettable.
In '78-'79 I was lucky enough to work in Java for 7 months ; went to Jokjakarta for wkd and visited temple where I reached thru the "bell" structure and touched the figure within for good luck . Now , 65YO , I realize they are not "bells" but "spaceships" !
I found all Indonesians to be the kindest people I've met . I found Bali before the "jetset" and all the tourism hullabaloo . Kutu Beach - only place to stay were Pertimina Cottages run by a Australian women who had a couple longboards

well,actually first time Dutch archeologist published this invention found by locals, the pics clearly showed its been very damaged and broken. as its covered by vulcanic materials from nearby volcano. you can search those pictures in youtube. some people made it in slide show. and then later, the indonesian goverment been trying to restorate it ever since to this day.

I went there in early 90s, it's kinda sad how many of the status have been disfigured and at some there were graffiti
its been restorated fully now. its very clean nowadays. i went there last time in 2015.
It was Stolen. I heard 3 of them were given by Dutch to the King of Thailand as gift.

the collapse of Buddhism influence in the malay peninsula & sumatra in 12 to 13 century AD was largely due to the long conflict among Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms in the region rather than Islam. if you did your homework, you should aware of the joint military campaign between Rajendra Chola I of India and Khmer Emperor Suryavarman I in 1025 AD against the kingdom of srivijaya (the founder of Borobudur & the centre of mahayana Buddhism in the region at the time) and all of its vassal states along the malay peninsula and sumatra. Later, the already weakened Srivijaya then invaded by the Javanese hindu's kingdom of Singhasari in 1275 and finally ceased to exist after a massive military campaign from the Javanese Hindu's kingdom of Majapahit in 1477.
