Indonesia's Spice Kingdom | The Mark Of Empire | Majapahit

  • The Majapahit Empire was the largest empire in Southeast Asia & the centre of the world-famous Spice Trade that stretched from China to Europe. Host Peter Lee starts off on the island of Java to see why it was so suited to cultivating rice, used to make exchanges with merchants from the Spice Islands. As demand for spices took off around the world, geography and timing of seasonal sailing winds saw Java grow into the centre for the global spice trade, which enriched Majapahit with luxury trade goods from all over the world.
With increased riches, the empire is said to have unified Indonesia’s islands into one nation. Peter travels to Sulawesi to see why the relationship between Majapahit Java and its outer islands was more nuanced than conqueror and subject. Today, the legacy of a united Indonesia under the Majapahit still looms large, where different groups hark back to the era in the face of increasing intolerance and conflict within the island state.

As a "Filipino", I envy Indonesia. They embrace their cultural diversity so much, and here we are enforcing a homogenizing artificial identity that kills many of our ethnic cultures and languages. Do our people know where our famous dishes Karekare, Sinigang, Adobo come from? I doubt it. The creators can't even be proud of them because even they have no idea. I wish you success, Indonesia.

    this documentary was truly beautiful.
i am a javanese person from suriname, whose ancestors are from central java and east java, and no doubt are my ancestors from majapait. it really makes me sad that this beautiful culture is dying in suriname, and theres so much more to the javanese than just islam. i actively practice a form of javanese hindu-buddhism and seeing the beauty of the cultures firsthand and experiencing the same things that the ancient indonesian kings and traders really makes me happy and makes me realize how lucky i am to be of this culture.
i grew up in this very ancient javanese setting, where we wrote in the native javanese script, wore batik all the time, and followed the original javanese calendar and so i was exposed to all of these beautiful things. according to my experiences, the other javanese kids in my school were really ashamed of their culture. they were constantly bullied for being muslim, and not only that, they did not want to speak javanese and spoke dutch instead which really made me sad, trying to speak javanese to my other javanese friends and being unable to speak it. i especially got sad when we would have javanese feasts and rites of passages and when my village friends would show up, they wouldnt wear the traditional clothing, and instead wore jeans and a polo shirt. when i would ask why they wouldnt wear the traditional clothing, they would say that they didnt like it, and refused to wear it because it was tacky.
i really hope that the javanese community in suriname sees this video to have a little taste of the true beauty of not only the javanese culture, but the united indonesian culture in which their families originated from, and same with any other indonesian ethnic group that struggles with this type of "forgetting the culture".

@Skylor katiman I'm also from Suriname and I'm Hindu. This documentary has indeed been very interesting and educational simultaneously. Actually, my curiosity started when I began examining the Javanese language and found out that it evolved from Kawi, the language of the people who resided within the Majapahit Empire. Kawi was heavily influenced by Sanskrit, which is obvious, and my mother tongue (Hindustani) evolved from Sanskrit. Both our languages also have foreign influences, like Arabic, Persian and influence from English and Dutch. This documentary has been fascinating and Amazing, Cheers brother! ❤

@@SkylorKatiman Correct. I speak Sarnāmi Hindustani, which is actually the Bhojpuri dialect spoken in the state of Bihar in North India. Bhojpuri is written using the Devanagri script, which's the same alphabet utilized by the Hindi language as well as other North Indian languages.
However, coming to the point on the Sarnāmi language, it's no longer written using the Devanagri alphabet by Surinamese people of Indian descent. This is mainly, because most of the Indian people in Suriname don't know the Devanagri alphabet. However, scholars, religious people, such as preachers (Pandit's) do know how to write using the aforementioned alphabet. I personally do know as well. :)

As a Filipino, I really envy Indonesians on how they respect their different ethnic identities, and how clearly defined each of their ethnic groups are with each other. Here in our country, only IP's (indigenous minority groups) could be distinguished from each other properly by their rich, uncolonized material culture. Meanwhile for the majority ethnic groups (lowland Christian peoples colonized by Spain) like the Tagalogs, Bisaya, Kapampangan, Ilocano, Bicolano, Waray, Hiligaynon etc., our ethnic identities are oftentimes overlooked and are generalized to subscribe to the single, National culture.
I hope people (Filipinos and Non-Filipinos) would realize that we are very much diverse, as we speak different languages. And that although our material culture (like traditional clothing, architecture, aesthetics etc.) are very much similar because we were once under one colony, Our intangible traditions (local myths, beliefs, practices, cuisine, literature etc.) are VERY DIFFERENT. For example, differentiating between Tagalog and Bisayan traditional culture could be difficult than comparing the Bugis and Javanese from a first glance, but that doesn't mean that they are from the same cultural backgound.

While I am agreeing with you there is a critical problem of representation of Indonesians beauty meaning that I often see people with European feature that dominate the entertainment industry. I am not saying they are not good representation but I feel like we need to represent Indonesians beauty with all the diversity that we have. We glorify about being authentically Indonesia but the media still advertises certain features for example if you look some people who were tan but they bleach their skin because we as a society still have preconceived notions about what should be beautiful. Whereas many Indonesia have really tanned skin it just doesn’t sit right with me.

As a filipino, were more influenced by sri vijaya rather than madjapahit (except for solot/ sulu and seludong/manila).. tundun(tondo or luzon) was allied with medang, then singhasari. The last madjaphit overlord avirjirkaya of luzon was defeated in battle by rajah ahmad (sultan ahmad) of a newly independent brunei. The lucoes/luzon fought and sent fleets to protect aceh against the portuguese in support of melaka. Sadly when we fell to the spanish, we were lost to nusantara for 300 years and our madjapahit was lost in our memory. The visayans (inclusing the suluk/tausug) remembers sri vijaya tho.. our ethnic name reflects sri vijaya, from the datuks of panay to sri lumayana the half chola/sumatran prince and first ruler of cebu..

Obviously you can't because that's the language of a different kingdom from the north. It's like a han chinese telling a story about their origins and then proceeds to saying that he can't understand old manchurian language. And lastly, there's no concrete evidence of your claims because that claims were made by pseudo historians. Majapahit (Javanese: ꧋ꦩꦙꦥꦲꦶꦠ꧀; Sanskrit: Vilvatikta; Kawi: Wilwatikta) was an empire based in East Java Province, Indonesia, which was founded in 1293-1527 AD. This empire was founded by Raden Wijaya son-in-law of Kertanagara, the last Maharaja Singhasari, and reached the peak of its glory to become a great empire that controlled large areas of the archipelago during the reign of King Hayam Wuruk, who ruled from 1350-1389.
The Majapahit Empire was the last Hindu-Buddhist empire to rule the archipelago and is considered the largest monarchy in Indonesian history. According to Negarakertagama (1365 AD), his power stretched from Java, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, Southern Thailand, Kalimantan, the Philippines (Sulu Islands), Manila (Saludung), Sulawesi, Part of Papua, and others. Archaeological remains and ruins of ancient buildings were found in many districts. Mojokerto, because it was once the capital of Majapahit.

The Majapahit Empire was the successor of the Singhasari Kingdom.
The Majapahit Empire didn't just appear, but had an embryo.
    -Kalingga Kingdom (674).
    -Medang Kingdom (732-1006).
    -Kahuripan Kingdom (1019-1045).
-Janggala Kingdom (1045-1136) and Kediri Kingdom (1045-1221).
    -Singhasari Kingdom (1222-1292).
-Majapahit Empire (1293-1517). After the fall of Majapahit, they merged into the existing kingdom: -The Kingdom of Bali (914-1908).
-The Kingdom of Bali was part of the protectorate of the Dutch Empire (1908-1945).
-The State of East Indonesia (1945-1950), then merged into:
-The Great Indonesia (the Republic of Indonesia until now).
Apart from Bali, Majapahit also merged into:
-The Sultanate of Demak (1475-1554), then split into three:
-Jipang Kingdom, Pajang Kingdom, and Kalinyamat Sultanate.
-Then one day it returned to the Sultanate of Mataram. Then split again into:
-The Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Surakarta Sultanate.
-This Sultanate of Yogyakarta is an independent country, never colonized by Europeans.
-All of them joined the Republic of Indonesia (The Great Indonesia).
In retrospect, actually Majapahit didn't collapse, but was continued by the Kingdom of Bali on the island of Bali, and the Sultanate of Yogyakarta with it's brothers on the island of Java.
Bali has the ambition to annex the Vasal Majapahit Kingdom, because Bali considers itself to be the successor of the Majapahit Empire (Hindu Buddhist Empire).
Then the Bali Kingdom expanded it's power to the Lombok Island, Sumbawa Island, and Blambangan (East Java).
_Today, Blambangan (East Java), Bali and West Lombok, seem to make them adherents of Buddhism Hinduism (the Majapahit version) which has been combined with local wisdom values._

The history of King Jayavarman II, the founder of Angkor Kingdom in Cambodia, mentioned he was taken prisoner by a Kingdom in Java and lived in Java for some time. He could only set himself free and gained their trust after he married a Javanese princess. Based on the period when he lived, most probably he referred to this Medang Kingdom. If you see the design of Angkor Wat, it looks like a copy and a larger version of Prambanan.
Now I am imagining a heyday of Southeast Asia where Kingdom in Java had vassal state in Cambodia ( which later on declared its independence) and referred to in financial statement in the Philippines

Born an bred Indonesian here. People keep asking how we manage these differences in race, skin color and gender? It's simple. We don't talk about it.
You see, you people (Singaporeans, Turks, Americans, Europeans) talk so much about diversity, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Indians, Natives, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Men, Women, Transgender, you guys keep bringing up races, religion, skin color or gender on literally every single conversation, anywhere, at anytime.
"This black guy...", "This asian girl...", "As an Indian Muslim what do you think about this...", diversity quota, Black Lives Matter, etc. We Indonesian? We just do not care. Since I was a kid, we never refer to anyone based on their group identity, I literally had no idea that one of my best friend was a Christian until we were friends for 5 years, I literally had no idea that my first girlfriend back then was a Sundaese-Java descent, no one has ever discussed anything about such things, we do know where people are from, but racial bias is such a foreign concept to us, that most of us didn't even realize what "racism" is until western culture brought them up through the media, we look at each other based on personality and character (and looks ofc if you're talking sexual attraction).

But Muslims here suffer from Identity crisis and would much rather associate with Arabs, Turks than Hindu culture. There are some good ones among them but even they face harrasment and bullying if so much as they show respect for their Hindu roots. Respect has to be earned and it should be mutual. So don't pass sweeping statements when you don't even know our history. It's about time some sane muslims come forward and start denouncing these extremists as that's the root cause. Other TV station also made several documentaries about our history, heritages and cultures: Metro TV with "Melawan Lupa" which covers much more about most recent history; TV One with its documentaries, some even documenting about "celebration of 100 years of Angklung in Thailand"; Net. TV with it's "Indonesia Bagus" program; and CNN with it's documentaries.

Indonesian nationalism is often misunderstood by Malaysians and Singaporeans as an aggressive form of patriotism owing to the bitter recent history of 'Konfrontasi' that still colors the views of Malaysians and Singaporeans towards Indonesians. But, Indonesian nationalism which finds its expression in the enduring spirit of 'One People, One Nation, One Language' is rooted in the desire of Indonesian people for freedom, independence and sovereignty as an outright rejection of slavery and dehumanization of European colonization of this part of the world.

Wayang Topeng dance is so similar to the Chhau Dance of eastern India, specially the gaits and hand gestures. Chhau dancers also use masks like the Wayang dancers. Only difference is that Chhau masks are made of paper mache carved from clay moulds. The masks used in the Seraikella style of Chhau have stark similarity in the facial feature with the Wayang masks. In many aspects, a villager from Odia speaking areas of eastern India will feel more homely in Java or Bali than in any other parts of India.

I am an Hindu living in USA for the last 46 years. This is one of the best RUclips documentary I have seen. The narrator is emotionally involved in the story he is presenting. I find it amazing that in spite of being a predominantly Muslim country for several hundred years now, Indonesians cherish their Hindu and Buddhist heritage. It is reflected in their language, culture and nature. Alas it is just the opposite in India and Pakistan where 99% of the Muslims (mostly converted) look to Arabia for their culture, mannerism, dress code and above all their ancestors.

@मलेच्छ मोमिन thats why u need something called tolerance. in india, foreigner should respect their culture not to eat cow, but an indian should understand if outside india, ppl eat cow. talking about this man sadness..it is happened too in Indonesia, after Majapahit period, Demak Empire (Islamic Empire) dominated the area, and after that Europe imperialism. So now Indonesian almost lost the history about that, even traditional religion very hard to build their temple or doing their prayer...it is happened in 2020 too.

The Majapahit was a Javanese Hindu thalassocratic empire in Southeast Asia that was based on the island of Java (in Indonesia). It existed from 1293 to circa 1527 and reached its peak of glory during the era of Hayam Wuruk, whose reign from 1350 to 1389 was marked by conquests that extended throughout Southeast Asia. His achievement is also credited to his prime minister, Gajah Mada. According to the Nagarakretagama (Desawarñana) written in 1365, Majapahit was an empire of 98 tributaries, stretching from Sumatra to New Guinea, consisting of present-day Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Thailand, East Timor, southwestern Philippines (in particular the Sulu Archipelago)

I love the animations in these Mark of Empire documentaries. However, the ones in this video stand out, particularly because of the use of Wayang Kulit puppet figures to represent the Majapahit kings and other important figures ! Would have loved it even more if they had given us a brief about Wayang Kulit (traditional shadow-puppet play) itself in this documentary, considering it's importance in Indonesian culture.
