As someone who born, raised in Bali and pretty much raised by the "tourism money", i had seen the good the bad and the ugly of what the tourism brings to my home island. To put it simply, the good is that it had help pull out many families out of poverty and raised the living standard significantly, like i still remember how my hometown changed from this completely rural village like typical southeast asian village into quite a decent well built quite prosperous town in the span of like 10 years thanks to many of my villager went to work in the tourism industry. Economically its a blessing but it also brings high congestion, polution and degrading our traditional values that we are so very proud of due to demand in work hours, the limited spaces to expand and built new roads and means of public transportation and mismanaged pollution ranging from trash to smog. I still remember back when i was at the elementary school that we joked about floods the likes at major urbanized cities because such concepts never been (or wasnt that frequent) back then, but now its became somewhat of a normality The end of the day i would say that all of these is due years of mismanagement and the lacking sense of urgency. We should've done a lot more back then with all the money that we had got from tourism by investing on infrastructure and mitigation from overtourism. I didnt claimed to had the answer for all the problem but i think the government should start to brainstorm and work harder to repair the damage that already had been done (well at least the one that possible to be fixed), and mitigate future problem before it becomes more harder to dealt with I still had lots of comparison that i had experienced sinces my childhood but this comment were already too long so i leave at that
Bali holds a special place in my heart, but it's starting to feel overwhelmed. The infrastructure isn't keeping up with demand, and the endless construction is disruptive. Traffic is a nightmare! It's time for change if Bali wants to preserve its unique magic. I don't find myself visiting as much as I had. And what improvement is the chief talking about? That one underpass at Kuta? The government needs to do more!
Why King does not take the lead in making Bali well well-planned and tourists-Numbers-controlled destination? Is King totally useless? No one values his leadership and opinion? How much Bali money does Main-Indonesia take and how much goes back to Bali people?
@@nv9991 kings and royal does exist in bali but they held no political power. They are merely ceremonial one, but in bali theres 2 type of government bodies, the democraticly elected one, and one that govern in the realm of religious affairs and so called "adat" (tradition). So they only influence like "when is the next ceremonial to celebrate the newly built temple will be" Or "theres this new central government rulings about the creation of new roads that might pass thru sacred ground" but even tho they are only ceremonial in nature they still able to influence decisions making indirectly
I came here in '75, when there was nothing but empty beaches, lush jungles and sweeping rice fields. In those days the island had about 10,000 visitors a year; mostly young travelers who were respectful of the land, the people and their traditions. Now that number has swollen to nearly 10,000,000 (!!) brain dead, badly behaved tourists. The beaches and oceans are full of garbage, the jungles and rice fields have all but disappeared, and the sweet nature of the Balinese has been severely tested. I don't know what the answer is, but this will be my last stay on the island of the gods.
@@Ciscodays the best way to fix this problem is by making more strict rules, like getting fined if you got caught littering, and for the Indonesian governments to promote other provinces
I was born in Bali, grew up in Bali, I considered myself a Balinese. I love my culture and respect the nature. Now, I'm worried they are slowly destroyed by tourism. It breaks my heart to see the over developed buildings/ hotel/ mall in Sanur, Canggu, Ubud. This is not a long term tourism. Tourists love nature not buildings. I cant imagine Bali in the next 20-30 years. If the government still ignorant and greedy and corrupted we need to say good bye to our innocent, peaceful Bali. Who knows what our children next have left to enjoy here. Nothing!
For those who don't like overcrowded, Indonesia offers a bunch of other beautiful places like Labuan Bajo, Manado/Bunaken,, Lombok/Nusa Tenggara/Komodo Island, Java (Ujung Kulon, West Java, Jogja and East Java), Medan/Lake Toba and Aceh, Makasar and Toraja, Borneo, Maluku Island and Banda Island, also Raja Ampat... So many undiscovered breathtaking places...
But Bali offers a unique experience , the temples there are rarely found in other places in Indonesia because they were mostly destroyed by Islamists. I mean Indonesia has very little left of its heritage of hinduism & Buddhism except in few places like Bali. And that cultural heritage brings a unique experience that Bali has to offer compared to just another place with a beach in Indonesia
@@exelrode I think you only visited Bali, In fact, there are more temples in Java than in Bali, we protect all Buddhist and Hindu temples no matter what our religion is, Islam, Catholic, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Confucianism, or even atheist. Even our government is still doing many excavations for buried temples or ancient ruins in Java and Sumatra. Yes, the accommodations, alcohol, and pork are not as good as in Bali but it's developing. The extremists are not Indonesian Muslims, they're imported products from the Middle East or the CIA that brainwash the non-well-educated or closed-minded people, but the Densus88 (Anti-terrorist Police Department) keeps them shut down. To prove it, We can attend the biggest metal festival in Southeast Asia, the Hammersonic (Slipknot, Blackflag, Batushka, Trivium last year. And, Lamb of God, Ingwy, Suicide Silence this year). Next month, we have Avenged Sevenfold concert in Jakarta. Last month we had Ed Sheeran and Calum Scott, Blackpink, also last year we had a football match between Indonesia vs Argentina. Come first then talk. And, Be careful what the media tells you, brother. But, if you only love Bali, enjoy Bali then, We always welcome anyone, everywhere, anytime...
You just cannot turn your place into something else just to please the tourists. Did Paris built Chinese themed hotels, Chinese opera houses or Chinese style bar to attract Chinese tourists? Heck no. Bali should stay Balinese. If some Aussie tourists lament about how hard it is to find western style beer…remind him to go back home to find one. The problem with Bali and Thailand is that they try to appease western tourists too much they themselves turn into western people. Japan has one of the highest tourist numbers in Asia and they stick to what they are.
Aussie tourists, according to this doco, are the very least of Bali's problems. russian, american, british and nigerian are the problem nationalities see 4:30

As an Indonesian, I have observed a gradual disillusionment with Bali due to the increasing number of tourists, resulting in a deterioration of mutual respect between visitors and locals. It is essential to uphold Indonesian cultural values, which prioritize respect over monetary interests. It is paramount for both tourists and locals to actively cultivate an environment of mutual respect and comprehension within Bali.
Sounds like they need signs and perhaps a cultural information guide at the gate letting them know its a sacred place. Its a little different but I've seen idiots dress like they are in a beach when going to the vatican. They dont know what sacred means to culture
This actually is the same problem with all over-touristed spots around the world. It's sad that at the cost of economic growth, you lose a place's charm, authenticity, and original character. Everything just becomes for show and for money. And that place becomes dependent or even like "hooked" to it, as if it were substance abuse. It's a domino effect, what outside developers bring in. Theu offer to buy land, prices go up, locals are not able to buy or keep land there, so everything eventually gets owned by outsiders and locals have less control on what can be done to it. As a person who likes to travel though, I want to visit Indonesia and I actually want to visit places other than Bali. Java is of interest to me because it has major cities. I want to see the real Indonesia! Eat local food, interact with locals!
Did't realise the culteral aspect of womens status & the traditional restrictions.. ' haven't been to indonesia yet ..' but I'v met a couple a Indonesian people involved in tourism Who visited us here in south east sri lanka . ' they did not like what has happened in bali .. & preffered the situation here where they could visit a kovil on their own as they were not touristic attractions .
Those white tourists want to regain control of your country as their colony. You will notice they always start propagandas that locals don't care about the environment and they are the ones who care. They are justifying their desires to own lands in Indonesia and be allowed to have the rights of citizens such as being allowed to vote and own and carry weapons. They pretend to be non-racist and cosmopolitan but behind those acts, they are no different from their imperialist ancestors. Usually they hide under the guise of being non-racists, fighting for world without borders, internationalist or leftists but in reality, they are still the same imperialists who want to take your lands.
this is so deep and mindful, the balanced view of tourism at present. I am glad to be a part of this mindful documentary, thanks CNA to raise the awareness of tourism impact on Bali
Getting emotional watching this… Bali will always have my heart 💜 such beautiful people, such a magical place… greed is a disease that is disturbing the world…
As a Thai person, we believe that Bali is the last stronghold of Old southeast Asians culture. The island and culture must be protected. Southeast Asians are kind and polite but don’t take our kindness for weakness. In Thailand, recently we have westerners attacking Thai nationals as well, it’s becoming a problem as well. This is unacceptable, you are a guest in our home, you should have respect for our culture and our people.
Why do Canadians go to Thailand? I know different 3 men who went for immoral s e x. I have Never been there, it feels dirty knowing 3 tourists went to party and sin.
Thai culture is the most stupid culture that I have ever seen, fully destroyed personality , situation with families super crazy, they use children's to make money and many other things, that's why I don't support that that culture should safe, smart people don't support their culture. I lived in Thailand 15 years , i have thai wife, i know what I am talking about that this even never think.
I've lived in Phuket for 10 years - in Thailand 22 years total. I've escaped now due to the Russian invasion and due to corruption that is now completely out of control. You may want to deal with that. It is also unfortunate that the Thais never get up in arms when yet another foreigner is attacked, cheated or scammed - which happens way more often than the opposite. I agree though that it is unacceptable - but from both sides.
I'm a foreigner living in Bali since 2014 and it's crazy how much changed in the past 10 years. It seems that those covid years made people think they need to make money as fast as possible without thinking of nature, rest of community, etc. Mentallity changed from a community feeling to an individualistic lifestyle. And many 'influencers' who try to portray a luxury lifestyle even made it worse.
its been going on for 20 years. thank the Aussies for turning it into their filthy playground to avoid taxes and build cheap crap villas. this is the beginning of the end of an era. it will collapse greatly
Bali should focused on "QUALITY TOURISM" rather than Quantity of Tourist, since many tourist ended become trouble maker, vandal, even some of them are literally criminal who rob locals. Look at Maldives, visitor are low but they get huge profit from tourism since they focused on luxury beachfront cottages and it's part of their Quality Tourism.
@@broniabutler4166 Hey there Im Maldivian, about that, what do you suggest we do for discarding our waste? If you had just been well informed about our peril, you would have known that theres a lack of space for us small islanders. What do you think?
@m1frah I understand that space is limited, it is a group of very small islands after all. Maybe those making the huge profits from tourists should be using a eco friendly method of rubbish disposal instead of the cheapest
Thanks for the advice, im with you there. Tbh, the actual heart of the problem lies in poor governance and planning. Even though the government has taken up on the initiative to improve our infrastructure, the pace is real slow. We can only hope for better days ahead. Thanks having me, wish you all the best, good bye.
As a Balinese, Bali is slowly changing. Losing its true spark and beauty for the sake of pleasing tourists. The reason why Bali started becoming famous was because of its people and the culture that has been preserved by the Balinese since a long time ago.
As Indonesian, i feel sorry what Bali been through. Since pandemic, we heard many problematic tourists. They came without legal document, live in a cheapest way while worked from Bali. But live there for months even after the time was due. They also not respecting Bali tradition and religion. I went there last year......and shocked Bali is not Bali i knew anymore, it's traffic everywhere, tourists with motorcycle everywhere. I knew tourism is the main income in Bali, but we want Bali with dignity, being exclusive again, stop these problems with new laws.
Indonesia has 18,110 islands and they all go to Bali! Completely wasted by tourism! Time to put a quota on the numbers ==> I Hope that the Minister of Tourism (Menparekraf), Mr. Sandiaga Uno is watching docu also. Greetz from Batam Indonesia!
Diberi pembangunan malah demo-demo menolak pembangunan.
I've been living in bali since I was a kid. I have to say that this is the first time i see Those men from the task force in action. "Only" for the sake of camera. Bali is no longer a nice place to go unfortunately, we ruined the island with our non controled villas building and also bad trash processing.
The Balinese people are now quite known among other Indonesians as being very discriminatory against domestic tourists, even racist at times towards the Javanese and Nusa Tenggara people while putting whites at a very high pedestal.
Facts. The gov't lets bule own all the hotels and restaurants, and take over all the land. What makes it worse are all the racist local women who chase bule husbands, encouraging more colonizers to Indonesia.
Respect where you are. Balinese are an exquisite people. Get out into the hills, meet the people of the villages. Your life forever changes when they welcome you because you show respect. We carry a bag for our own rubbish every day. Building more sustainable systems will be difficult but it can be done. Travel is a priveledge and we should never forget that.
@@darksun3525 Bali was paradise...decades ago. Greed, narcissists, Vloggers, bogans, primitive Russians and all the other trash completely destroyed Bali. It's game over
There are beautiful unspoilt areas in the north, the east and west Bali national park. It’s easy to find a good guide and quiet places like Candi Dasa, Lovina, West Bali national park, volcano and jungle treks. Just spent a day in the rice fields near Tenganan and saw just 5 other tourists on the path. We helped with the harvest too.
@@darksun3525 There is always Ubud in the mountains. There you will find true culture, if it hasn't been spoilt by overdevelopment and the influx of tourists. There is always a cultural show every night then in a temple somewhere there (you can check the schedule of the performances at the Tourism Center in the middle of town). There are also tour guides hanging around the Tourism Center, so you can hire one to go around. I went there in 2005 or 2006; I hope it hasn't changed much ;). And perhaps, there are more hotels and villas there now to choose from. Enjoy your stay in Bali ;)!
There seem to be so many of these stories worldwide. The world has become wealthier - travel cheaper. Your cup is overflowing - until it is broken. When it’s broken the tourists leave.
I stayed in Bali for 6 months in 1968/9. There were about 30 backpackers at that time, staying in the Adi Asa guesthouse in Denpasar, plus some wealthier tourists at the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur. But not very many. Kuta was a fishing village with no hotels at all. We’d go there on a day trip from Denpasar. I cycled around the island, having bought a bicycle, and also went around on Vespas. The backpackers were mostly pot smokers and we would sit around the guest house in a big circle sharing joints. Sometimes the chief of police would drop by, listen to the latest music cassettes which I had brought from Singapore, and he would also take a puff of the ganja. It was apparently, obviously, legal! I had a good camera and slide film and carefully took photos of the amazing sights. Some time later, while living in Japan, I managed to publish a book about Bali comprising 100+ photos and 15,000 words of text. It was a personal travelogue, published by Kodansha International, in English. 15,000 copies were printed. I have so many fond memories of Bali in its unspoilt state. I am sorry, but by publishing that book I must have contributed to Bali’s demise, in some way. Sorry, Bali 😢
Maybe it due to Pres. Reagan., but it definitely the ablity of the new planes and airline competition. I rememebr Garuda was charging $500 for flight Jarkata to Manado so they don get much traffic those day.
Proud to bali but please we are not ready yet for overtourism, just spread out, indonesia is big and everyplace is beautiful and the people also very friendly
I actually want to visit other places in Indonesia. Bali is not what I'm looking for because I don't want over-touristed places that seem out of control and have lost authenticity. I want to see the real Indonesia, eat what locals eat, and see what locals see. I'd really like to mingle with the locals and as a Filipino, I want to see how much we have in common. The only thing that really concerns me is that the locals I meet will not want to engage with me because of course I don't speak bahasa Indonesia.

Important things to improve: Garbage and Pollution management, Culture and Nature restoration, Public infrastructures, and Law-enforcement not only to visitors but local scammers too.
Yeah, trash has been an issue in Bali ever since the introduction of plastic waste. In the day, when all trash was made of bio-degradable palm and banana leaves, the Balinese developed the habit of dumping their waste along roadways and in front of temples, etc.. As long as these materials disintegrated, there was no problem. Everything was compost. But plastics changed all that, and the Balinese people never seemed to get the memo.
I just came back from Bali. It was an amazing time...however I am ashamed of many tourists. To be associated with westerners with no respect, no civility, no culture of their own, drunk, driving like fools....I mean i can go on but you get the picture. The fact that many well behaved people visit Bali should not be diminished. BUT...the ones that ruin things for all people wanting to have a beautiful experience there stand out more. They are an extreme embarrassment even in their own countries! So i hope the people of Bali can know that many many of us really love it there and treasure the island and its people. Peace
Yes I never understood why Bali catered to a certain type of tourist. I loved the culture, got the appropriate dress for temple visits, studied with a high priestess. Full respect for the people the land and their customs.
Sure Sure the Indonesians are soooo much better right, thats why everything works soooo well in Indonesia, westerners have sooo much to learn from Indonesians!
The $9 tourist tax is too low. I paid $200 per day in Bhutan in 2023 ( now it’s $100 per day). Bali has to decide if it wants fewer tourists who are prepared to pay top dollar to access its unique culture, or submit to greed and let everyone in. My last visit to Bali was in 2010, when there were still a few places which retained their beauty and innocence. Those days are gone and I fear for Bali, if it does not stop mass tourism. A few dollars in the pocket now, but misery in the future when the magic disappears and no one will want to go there.
I grew up in Sumatra in the late 40s as a mixed Dutch Indonesian. We had a remarkable place near lake Toba, but lost everything when Sukarno led a revolt against the Dutch, many families lost their lives but our local friends saved us and allowed my family to escape. I had not been back since and was excited to visit Bali last year. I was disappointed with the choking infrastructure, traffic, trash and just lack of any form of restraint on development.
I have only visited Bali once, it was in 1974, it was very beautiful. Verant rice paddies as far as the eye could see, the roads were empty of traffic. Ubud had One little business, an Artists workshop. Now its like Byron Bay sans the sea. Kuta had a handful of clothes shops, tuk tuk was the transport. The sacred spots, we found a driver, were barely inhabited except for locals. It was a Paradise. I never returned, I didn't want to see the rapid changes & hear all the Australian voices shattering the peace. Now, its unrecognisable.
Boy am I glad my son and I took numerous surf trips to Bali in the 1990's all the way from the Virgin Islands. We surfed Canguu numerous times and the only things there were a temple and one food vendor on the entire beach, with large rice paddies inland. Our last trip we saw the development getting crazy out by Uluwatu including the proposed huge Cliffside hotel. We would always go to Java to surf Gland which required a long ride through the countryside of Bali going through little towns and villages to reach the ferry to Java. I pray that the government starts protecting the environment and the tranquility that Bali offered.
Very interesting! I was in Bali in 1991, during a year long trip to Asia. Most of Bali was truly beautiful and a sort of magic. But even then Denpassar and Kuta were ugly places with a lot of bars and very many drunk tourists, a lot of traffic and a lot of waste. I remember really disliking that place. I hope the people can take back control and save the island and the culture. To be so highly dependand on tourism is not good for any country.
Tourism is heavenly bliss indeed, the freedom to travel and explore so many natural hidden beauties, for how devastating was the Covid pandemic disaster, this documentary is showing us once again, how people of Indonesia and Bali are so respectful and devoted to their land, the religious connection raise all of us stronger, living in symbiotic relationship with Mother Earth... everybody understands how precious might be. Tourists are wild, they love to break the rules and have no rules at all...on the other side of the world but then... nobody must allow the lack of respect for the ... Holy Creation, natural beauties or precious religious areas. Once again, loving our planet is crucial, no matter where , for which country. The last disasters raised us all stronger and better, we are global family by now, we are so tied to each other, we have to help each other like true siblings by now...lovely this video, only dreaming of traveling is already.. a big step forward 🎉❤🎉
It's great to see Bali reopening its doors to tourists, but it's crucial to address the challenges of over-tourism responsibly. 🌴 Sustainable tourism practices and community engagement are key to preserving Bali's natural beauty and cultural heritage while supporting its economy.
I went to Bali twice around 1998 and it was a beautiful place to visit. My first time over seas and the people were wonderful, friendly and very polite. Tourist over the years have contributed to many issues in Bali. I just enjoyed the vibe back then. Respect the culture, that’s all that is expected.
Getting rid of stereotype is indeed hard AF It isn't surprising that most SEA countries is often seen in rather exotified gaze as institution of fancy bar or nightclub near the blue sea white sand beach by Westerner gaze then in second somebody acted like drunken fool , creating a social disruption Thats why i hate Nouveau Riche tourist , Main character syndrome tourist and Youngling tiktoker teenager tourist
Yg lebih miris karna pemerintah terlalu tunduk sama investor sehingga semua tempat yg indah dijadikan villa padahal bali itu nilai jual dari pemandangan sawahnya. Emang susah klo pejabatnya cuma mementingkan uang apalagi kebijakan mentri pariwisata terkadang bentrokan dgn hukum adat yg melarang pembangunan. Semoga ada kesadaran untuk para pejabat biar bisa membuka matanya
Bali used to be my favorite destination, for about 20 years. I spent 2 months per year on that very special island. It used to be quiet and peaceful and very beautiful. Now it’s destroyed 😢😢😢
This is happening everywhere. We have been 7th time in Venice, Italy. We live 350 km from Venice. We told ourselves, "Never more...!" Even if tourists have to pay entrance fee of 5 euro introduced few months ago. It is full of tourists like never before. We want to travel to Bali next January...now I see why we went through such training in Venice:)
As someone working in the tourism industry in Bali. I could say that it's been mismanaged. Everyone in the higher-up position only thinks about their personal gain. Permits are easily given to foreign developers, some disguised as local ones. Even in my company, there are so many foreign employees, working from Bali without a permit and it's a 'normal thing' here. The impact is prices crazily went up. Meanwhile, the locals don't get as much as they should. Cities built without a proper plan. Villas dominating the area. It's just a matter of time until environmental problems come if things keep going this way.
What an interesting documentary. All the people interviewed were so wonderful and caring about their island with deep insight and smart vision about their community and what is necessary to preserve it. I am wondering with so much awareness why necessary regulations are not enforced higher up. I guess the motto "cash is king" remains valid. :-(
Great insight. I’ve only been to Bali once, never again. It’s like an extension of Australia. Full of bogan Aussies, trying to get the most out of their dollar. Most waterways were polluted. Too many tourists. Not for me. Best of luck to the local Balinese people.
With new proposed tourist taxes, i hope Bali will have less tourists and maybe less pollution and garbage issues. I truely hope these things will improve for the locals of Bali in the future. You are fantastic and i would hope drivers return to Java and other islands and return the streets to the Balinese.
Agree. Great but heartbreaking documentary. As someone who likes to travel, I want to visit places in Indonesia other than Bali. I want authenticity and local stuff, not places destroyed by overtourism.
51 tourists in 2021 . That is what I call paradise! My wife is Balinese, I pray for her island. Indonesia govt needs to develop other tourist destinations other than just Bali.
This is what I am scared of the influx of tourists without any controlling them of coming. Tourism is good for the economy but over tourism has its downfall. Crime, pollution, sex trading, drugs, etc. Bali needs transformation.
For Filipinos, Bali is the best place to visit for relaxation and leisure but because a number of Westerners are mostly unruly, Filipino tourists are not unruly because Filipinos more friendly with Balinese than Westerners make it one of the most friendly in Bali Today, Bali has a most favorite place for Filipinos because they have direct flights from Manila to Denpasar by Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific I’m very sad to see the beautiful Bali filled with unruly tourists resulting on deportation so with Indonesia as my favorite country, I will visit Bali and hopefully, It will never happened again so I hope to see you soon in Bali 😊😊 Bali is my favorite place and Denpasar was one of them so I love Bali so much and I like to meet Puteri Indonesia Bali like Lakshmi Suardana, Nanda Widya Saraswati and Juliastrid Sari and I like to meet Balinese people as friends so I will waiting for you to visit the Island of the Gods 😊😊 Love from Calamba City, Laguna in the Philippines 🇵🇭💕🇮🇩
it's overcrowded i live far from tourist spot, hotel, and villa yet i still see foreigner in daily lives .even they rent place in local area .not to mention the domestic tourist also decide to move and stay in here .in the past years i see so many shop, hotel, villa, cafe are pop up.traffic getting jam ever year. maybe i'll decide to move out near future if this getting out of control
What I hate the most about tourists ruining Bali is the fact that there is literally no other place in the world like Bali's local culture in Indonesia or the world. Bali's Hinduism is different from the rest of the world. I find it extremely offensive that a lot of tourists seem to care more about beaches and night life than learning the history of why this place is special. If they just want to party and take photos, there's plenty of other places where they can go. Instead I feel like a lot of foreign tourists just mindlessly want to go to Bali because of FOMO from social media or they want to show off. Some don't even know Bali is in Indonesia.
Aussies & Americans are shameless, gluttonous! Bali needs to drastically change the paradigm! Knock down hotels, build back beautiful flora, fauna! The citizens must protest, picket, shut down the island! This takes intestinal fortitude! Govts are corrupt, the people must demand no plastic on island. Green initiatives! Make tourists pick up beach,Street garbage once a week! Be German, lol! It's not rocket science but it takes organization🌺🏝️
The biggest problem is that people here just refuse to acknowledge the truth. Look at the comments section below and see how some people are trembling in anger and having a hard time swallowing the harsh realities of their own country. Mind you these are not ignorant people. They see everything from their own eyes. Whether it is the extreme poverty, dirty, chaotic, no concept of hygiene, loud streets or extreme pollution. They can see everything! Yet they would make excuses and do mental gymnastics to avoid acknowledging these problems. Whenever you point these things out, they go ultra defensive, become insulting and start to go crazy. I met people from other developing countries and they freely talk about the problems that exist there, but Indonesia do nothing but either ignoring them and attacking others who point them out. The only way to fix a country is to acknowledge that problems exist there.
You are kinda too late giving this kind of advice because some of us are accepting critism especially after actual democracy is introduced in this country back in 1998, you can see one of top comments that criticize their own goverment.
True, I'm so tired of hearing about the Gringo in Latin America. I was on Roatan this Summer & the water taxi, tuk tuk guided said how everyone comes to the island and pollutes it! The locals leave their garbage, dirty diapers, picnic junk all over the narrow sand. Utila island one hour away has garbage trucks every day collecting. The beer bottles, wrappers ,etc are all over but they started cleaning up after ex pats came to islands during Pandemic! 😴
I loved my trip to Bali, I visited to explore the beautiful landscapes, culture, art, foods and temples, nature and wildlife, but not to drink alcohol and party as this type of tourism is causing the most problems in counties everywhere unfortunately.
All the tourism over development and crowding in Bali is confined to the southern tip of the island; maybe 10-15 percent of the land. The rest of the island, with its valleys, rice terraces, volcanoes, and beaches is almost uninhabited and still very beautiful.
It's not only in the south west, but also Ubud changed to the worst with standing traffic jams, has become a no-go area. No parking possibilities, opened the football field with long walking distances to other places than the numerous touristic shops.
I was there 20 years ago and it was beautiful. Shops and resorts weren't expensive and owned by locals with their Balinese architecture.... nowadays, even on RUclips... they are owned by foreigners with their modern architecture... losing that traditional ambience and taking the profit and benefits from local people. Exactly the same thing happening here in Thailand. Governments should stop and ban foreign corporations and wealthy people taking advantage of locals and bring back the beauty of these places.
I visited bali last year, on business meeting. Most of people in bali are very friendly, thought when we use online transport service, it was often blocked by local driver. I never visit bali during the long weekend, because i knew it will be a bad experience.
I lived and worked there combined 8 years. First in the nineties it was beautiful. I rerturned in 2006, from there every year got worse. Traffic, garbage, pollution, crowds, more and more hotels and villas. I still have friends there and speak the language . I left in 2012 and have no desire to ever return. MAAF BALI

Despite the problems with tourism, on the bright side, at least tourism when handled appropriately seems a lot cleaner than something like heavy industries, like massive steel factories that churn out smoke and pollution.
Just been to UBUD for the 2nd time and the roads and trash are terrible. Its not tourists making the mess its the locals who throw everything in rivers or drains and i saw many pickups dumping waste by the side of the road , Tugher fines and policing is definatly needed and as for foreigners buying land its the balinese that are selling it?
They don't hate tourism, how can they hate if 60% of their economy depending on tourism....I think this is more on the tourism management, which is the problem of Indonesia in general...hopefully in the next 10 years, there will be more bright generation who can lead indonesia/bali better than what we have now

There is a difference between the tourists that visited the Philippines as compare to the tourists that flocks our neighbors. Our tourists are quality tourists meaning most of them are not backpackers or budgeted tourists for many of them are wealthy people. So it's understandable that Thailand and Indonesia are trying to put a crack down to the tourists because for example many tourists that visited Thailand are backpackers, gays, drug addicts or criminals. These are the problems and these type of tourists have limited money only
@@richardnuevo Complete nonsense. When the only people who came to Bali were backpachers t6here weren't any problems. 20 years ago I visited bali, its still beautiful and not too over crowded, visited the tanah lot temple, ubud rice field, kuta city area..didnt know now its so crowded cause nv been back to balik after that...
The biggest problem with ANY tourist destination is the UTTER LACK OF RESPECT for the locals shown by the tourists who'd trash the place up, leaving others to clean up after them. This is not something that FOREIGN tourists do but all tourists do even to their OWN tourist destinations in their OWN country. For example, Australian tourists who visit Australian Native Aborigine sacred sites, instead of taking their rubbish with them, would simply throw and scatter them about the sites without a single care in the world. Or, urinate and defecate around the sites which are the burial places of indigenous natives. Imagine doing this in your own cemeteries where your own loved ones are buried! Little wonder that places like Uluru (Ayers Rock) have banned climbing onto it. It is also bad enough that the once pristine mountains of the Himalayans have been now turned into gigantic rubbish dump by irresponsible mountain climbing tourists. When people don't behave responsibly and have no respect for the area they are visiting, what is to be expected especially when what they are doing is spoiling the place for everyone else - including even their own future generations. Places like Bali has to simply buckle down and lay down the "Riot's Act". Sure, there are those immature juveniles who'd whine and complain, "But ma fweedum ...". I don't think that the Balinese will miss those types who'd vandalize their homes (Bali itself).
Bali needs to do like Boracay island in Philippines, shutdown for half a year to clean itself and nature to heal then open up slowly for cultural tourism not to a bunch of drug and alcohol addicted from Russia and Australia.
When I lived in Bali in 2015-2018, Bali was still quite amazing. Some places in Seminyak even still can drive to view paddyfields without cafe, Umalas and Canggu were still quiet and amazing. Back post covid, Bali become sucks. Many horrible unrully tourists come in. And local government just keep building hotels ie Sanur, do we need apartement/mall ?? Please don't destroy Bedugul and the surrounding. Let Lake Tamblingan be as original as what I can remember. Truly sad for Bali loss its magical feel and quietness..please don't destroy Bali.
There a couple of weeks ago. Liked Seminyak but would give the island 8/10. The major downside, for Brits, is the distance. My trip, via Singapore, involved 32 hours in the air and 11 hours on layover. The people? Nice. Will I go back? No.
It's so sad. First, the Dutch exploited Bali, and now it's a backward government and greedy developers. The corrupt gov only cares about exploiting Bali as a cash cow and will happily destroy it. They don't care about the people or culture- they will let it decline until it eventually turns into a Muslim city with pretty temples and statues. It's good to see the Balinese people fighting to keep their culture and way of life 💗🌺🙏
No one is trying to make Bali into a Muslim city. Why are you so Islamophobic that you keep blaming Islam when it's clearly your own Balinese people doing destroying your place by letting those foreigners rule over you.
Lol, Muslim city? Kalau niat sudah dilakukan dari puluhan tahun yang lalu. Di Bali sendiri lebih banyak bar daripada mesjid. Jangan paksakan pendapat anda yang tak beralasan itu, hanya karena kebencian pada agama lain. What a stupid statement.

@@pampasco BALI ISLAND IS HUGE 14 TIMES BIGGER THAN THE SINGAPORE. A little bit more infrastructure is just fine. Also the busy streets only in Canggu and Kuta. BALI IS HUGE
this reminds me of what happened to Boracay in the Philippines. The tagline back in the 2000s was "come before it's gone" - referring to the overdevelopment of the island destroying it's image as an unspoiled paradise. Boracay is now completely commercialized, the lure is gone and it's now "overrated" because the overdevelopment has destroyed it's natural beauty (granted it still gets tourists, but people don't flock to it like they used to). And that development won't stop - it's too valuable a cash cow for developers not to take advantage of it. My condolences to Bali. There is a silver lining, though: people moved on to different islands in search of what Bali/Boracay used to be and it gives a chance for other Indonesian islands to prosper from tourism. I'm sure there are other Indonesian islands being discovered as alternatives and we'll probably hear more about Lombok being the next big thing if it isn't already
Notice one thing, Nearly everyone is smiling no matter how bad the traffic is and that’s what makes Bali so special. Everyone seems to glow there especially when you’re there short term. Stay longer and the surface fades. But yes they need to plan the infrastructure to accommodate tourist growth. It’s a very delicate balance to try to get to while keeping the ancient thousand year old culture in tact. The historical walls have been built along the roads and those shouldn’t come down. In recent news, there appear to be plans to build trains on the island. The first I believe is airport to Kuta or in that general area….
I still remember back when i was at the elementary school that we joked about floods the likes at major urbanized cities because such concepts never been (or wasnt that frequent) back then, but now its became somewhat of a normality
The end of the day i would say that all of these is due years of mismanagement and the lacking sense of urgency.
We should've done a lot more back then with all the money that we had got from tourism by investing on infrastructure and mitigation from overtourism. I didnt claimed to had the answer for all the problem but i think the government should start to brainstorm and work harder to repair the damage that already had been done (well at least the one that possible to be fixed), and mitigate future problem before it becomes more harder to dealt with
I still had lots of comparison that i had experienced sinces my childhood but this comment were already too long so i leave at that
Bali holds a special place in my heart, but it's starting to feel overwhelmed.

I went almost 20 years ago and it has changed so much since then. It's so sad.

Sorry, Bali 😢
what is the book title? does the copy still sold? or perhaps is it available in periplus or other book store / online store? thank you
Bali Island of Light, by Sean Sprague. Out of print. Maybe available second hand.

And perhaps a lasting solution to the traffic and the gridlocks :(!

I was in Bali year 2000. It was so different and peaceful then.
Alas, it was already over in 2000...
Great documentary. It's just missing ideas for what the conscious tourist can do in order to not be part of the problem.
Respect the culture and the people. Learn about the culture. Don't trash the place.
It’s not rocket science!!! Study the culture, read about it, learn the rules and do’s and don’ts. You don’t need a documentary to tell you
I just came back from Bali. Peace
Don't go again, please
I paid 60euros last month. It went up in price. And I'm oK with that.
Need protect together...
$200 per day is a great way to reduce your yearly number of tourists to double digits and destroy the industry you developed
Sumatra, wow! Gorgeous I hear. Did you visit 🏝️
dulu daerah canggu itu tempat yg asri, alami kental dg nuansa pedesaan.. sekrg uda terlalu crowded 🤕
This piece made me appreciate Bali even more. Thank you CNA!
Bali has become a micro-example of the state of the world. As one of the elders said in the video: "Money is king."
I went to Bali twice around 1998 and it was a beautiful place to visit. My first time over seas and the people were wonderful, friendly and very polite. Tourist over the years have contributed to many issues in Bali. I just enjoyed the vibe back then. Respect the culture, that’s all that is expected.
Getting rid of stereotype is indeed hard AF

Colonialism 2.0 Indonesia needs to stop white westerners trying to replace them.
Australians are rude and stuck up they don’t know what culture is their country is ruined by Wokeness lol
With new proposed tourist taxes, i hope Bali will have less tourists and maybe less pollution and garbage issues. I truely hope these things will improve for the locals of Bali in the future. You are fantastic and i would hope drivers return to Java and other islands and return the streets to the Balinese.
Thank you, CNA for producing such a wonderful documentary. So great it's broke my heart watching it.
An interesting, informative documentary - thanks for sharing it!
For Filipinos, Bali is the best place to visit for relaxation and leisure but because a number of Westerners are mostly unruly, Filipino tourists are not unruly because Filipinos more friendly with Balinese than Westerners make it one of the most friendly in Bali

46 years ago Kuta was so quiet and beautiful and it breaks my heart to see it now.

Glad the Balinese locals are quick to take actions like the task force. The local Balinese are respectable and honorable people.
Same in Ireland, all foreigners now, crime ridden, dangerous!
MAAF BALI

Then the government decided to seek richer tourists - the tourism experiences obsessed wealthy, the narcissistic young influencers, - and the problems started. The solution is to seek poorer tourists.

Um you should spend time there. The foreigners are the ones trying to save the island from litter... Not the other way around
Your comment about Australia is so stupid also. Have you ever left your island ya peanut?

I agreed,
When I lived in Bali in 2015-2018, Bali was still quite amazing.

Bali selatan padat penduduk. Bali pegunungan sepi
this reminds me of what happened to Boracay in the Philippines.
