  • We go deep into the vast world of India’s scam call centers, meeting those behind the deception and the new breed of international scambaiters who are trying to bring these scammers down.
After seven years of running tech support scams, ‘Leo’ has leveled up. He is now an entrepreneur or a scam call center consultant who sets up scamming outfits for those with money to invest. From hiring to hardware, he has it down to a science, especially on how long it will take to generate returns for the investors.
At the other end of the spectrum, we follow an Indian scambaiter ‘Sven’ as he investigates a local company that’s running a scam call center. The majority of their victims are English-speaking foreigners overseas. Through reverse tracking, he has managed to get into the company’s systems, securing access to their confidential files and real-time CCTV footage of scams taking place.
Will ‘Sven’ be able to find enough evidence to submit to the police and conduct a crackdown?

I am an Indian living abroad and get these calls as well. I have lost my Indian accent so these scammers don't realize they are talking to another Indian. I play along for a few minutes acting like I am a gullible foreigner and out of nowhere loudly start cursing them and their parents in very filthy Hindi. They always hang up in panic. Hopefully I have traumatized atleast a few of these scammers into quitting their job.

Do you know what is scary about these Indian call centres… it’s due to the fact they tried to gather information from you first and then sell you a product next time they call you. I had talk to one of the Indian scammer in the past and gave him a fake name and address. 2 weeks later, a different number had called me and say. Are you John smith? I’m like no, but I’m also like how did you know because I had given the other guy that fake name and you are someone different. Scary world we are living in…

If I lived in Australia I'd be more worried about non Indian scams.. Those ones really clean people out.. Run by call centers in south east Asia. Investment opportunities for instance.. Or Nigerian romance or other scams. If there's one "good" thing you can say about Indian scams.. Most of the time they are going for under 10k..thats not because they aren't greedy it's just because of the pragmatics of it.. Using gift cards for example naturally limits how much can be taken in one go.

People running these scams have lost their souls for money, and have fallen below the basic dignity expected from a human being. Most of their victims are retirees living on hard-earned limited money they worked for their entire lives and hoped to use during their last years. After losing this money some have to go back to work at the age of 70, 80, and even more and sometimes just go hungry, suffer, depressed, and die in pain. The system in the US is merciless if you don't have money so these people can't even imagine what they are doing to their victims in reality. I feel the government of India needs to wake up and create a task force to stop this. These fellow Indians must be making themselves and their parents proud by doing these heinous crimes against humanity and bringing shame to our nation...

He didn’t think enabling such corrupted people and country to latch on to the technologies of developed countries won’t have consequences. I’ve lived in India actually. In North America, certain 'academies' are attracting people with the promise of training them in software skills. They then assist these individuals in creating fabricated resumes. Some American companies, relying solely on these resumes and online interviews, end up hiring them. During these interviews, it's reported that the interviewee often receives support from another person in India. Once hired, the cycle continues as the employee might then hire someone from India to perform their job duties. This practice has led to situations where individuals hold multiple jobs, with their work actually being done in India, potentially leading to the sharing of company secrets by third parties.

Reminds me of the hold the cartels of Mexico have. Only , in Indias case they don't give to the poorest. The cartels of Mexico have more respect than Indian scammers. What India should concentrate on is the threat that Pakistan poses on them and China. If those scammers would put their knowledge to use for the nation they might become a stronger and better people instead of being Crooks and Liars. Scammers are disgusting. It's like taking an old lady's cane away. It's like denying some elderly person a wheelchair. It's rotten Behavior. It's Behavior that's going to get India unwanted attention. India is well within his power and right to take control of that situation with deadly force if necessary. The new elderly are far more IT astute than current adults. I started studying programming in the late 80's. It would be very difficult for somebody to scam me. The Indian call centres have tried constantly. I play along with them for as long as possible, just to delay their call to another possible victim. When my friends & I discuss this issue, we always say "Indian scammers". The result is that whilst I despise racism, I have noticed that I don't trust Indian store workers or anybody who calls me and has an Indian accent. Whats really sad is that this is ruining the reputation of Indians to be hired in legitimate Tech companies. I work in recruiting and have seen first-hand that hiring managers for Customer Support and CS Engineering roles are more discriminatory against Indians. Not because they are less qualified than other job applicants (sometimes they are MORE qualified), but because they are seeing a high number of end-users hanging up on any support who have an Indian accent. Their customers will refuse to work with anyone who has an Indian accent and demand to speak with someone who doesn't, or the support calls will drag on much longer because people are afraid of being scammed they don't readily provide the details needed to diagnose issues and they'll deflect the conversation by demanding to know information about the support person instead - such as where they live in the US, what school they went to, who their manager is within the CS org, etc. So when hiring managers are considering if one candidate is going to efficiently resolve customer issues within their SLA's or if another candidate is going to end up lowering the entire departments turn-around times (even if it's not the candidates fault the end-user is discriminating against their accent) the hiring managers are more inclined to favor non-Indians.

Only way to solve this problem is to shift your focus from cheap operations to responsible operation. Companies in USA or Europe should set responsible salary parameters for call centers/tech support. A lot of the problems with scammers are caused by internet media companies who do not provide adequate means for their subscribers to contact them and discuss their problems. Customers are kept on hold for excessive lengths of time and calls are often terminated without the customer actually speaking to a person, this causes them to go on the internet in search of other ways to fix their problems leaving them exposed to the scammers.

When I was in college I took a small job through the university employment office to be an assistant to a couple who claimed the ran a small business. What they wanted me for was to be the fall person for insurance scams they were committing. I was to be the one inspecting their claims and signing that they were true and correct. The woman claimed to be blind due to some arc-welders blindness from driving in her car, but she was able to sit pouring over the fine print on those insurance policy documents by the hour. I lasted with them one whole day. Then I took another job as a waitress at a chain restaurant run as a franchise. No sooner than I got to my first shift, everyone I encountered said this couple hadn't paid anyone in months claiming they were having financial problems and that the money would be forthcoming. I turned them in because at that point I had nothing to lose. A few days later, they cleaned out the cash register, locked the doors and never returned. They were just stealing from the employees. You've got to be on top of things these days because the scams come in all sizes and flavors.

We get these scam calls all day at my job, one day we counted how many and it was 22. We like to mess with them asking things like did you ride your camel to work today. Most of them hang up but we have had a few stay on the line, cussing us out, saying Americans are weak, they are glad of what happened on 9/11, they asked, why do we let women have rights, have a say so and be able to be basically free. They talk bad about Joe Biden, make fun of him saying why did your weak President pull out of the area. Talked about honor killings just a load of stoneme age beliefs, it was crazy the things they said over the phone.

I hope with more awareness people will hang up on these scammers and not give them any money.

On the other hand, it is understandable that in India, hundreds of applicants vie for a couple of job openings. India compete with China on armaments and this costs billions of dollars, while there's a mine gold of deep-seated poverty all over India despite its progress eliminating some of them. Still, poverty in India is the hardest to eradicate.

Law enforcement is really lagging behind in technology. If a scam advertisement happened on TV, the public, the police, and the congress will be all over it. But if the scam came from an email, text message, or fake website, it seems like the scammer is above the law and no one can do anything about it. It's the civilian vigilantes that have the passion and expertise to stop it.

These Operations primarily based in India: are actually the result of American outsourcing. To su it up: large amounts of people in India were trained by American tech companies in search of cheaper labor. But when the language barrier became so much as to be an unacceptable obstacle: these people were suddenly out of work. All the lifestyles and things they had achieved were simply… Gone.
So what does a person do to survive when you have a literally been thrown to the gutter yet you are highly skilled in computers. You will do what is necessary to survive and you will not have any problem with those who backstabbed you. This is the backstory no one wants to hear about. It's easy to take the moral high ground when we are the ones who created it…
