Busting a billion dollar British scammer cartel | Part 1 of 2 | 7NEWS Spotlight Documentary

  • In the most explosive investigation of the year, 7NEWS Spotlight’s award-winning broadcaster Liam Bartlett busts open a billion-dollar British crime cartel that is fleecing Australians of more than $4 million each and every week.
The staggeringly sophisticated crime syndicate, run by British con artists with the backing of Russian mafia, has been targeting Aussie investors they have cruelly dubbed “mugs with money”, safe in the knowledge authorities here can’t - or won’t - touch them.
In the joint expose with investigative reporter Ross Coulthart, Bartlett will take viewers inside “Operation Tropicana” led by Australian fraud and cybercrime specialist Ken Gamble and his IFW Global operatives.
Across 24 simultaneous raids, in association with Malaysia’s anti-crime commission, the scam busters make more than 80 arrests, including Brit king pin Andy Peters, aka “Peg Leg”, who lived a life of luxury at the expense of duped Australians.
Bartlett said: “I have been embedded with crime fighting groups from various countries over the years, but this operation was on a scale like no other. As it turned out, it needed to be. The criminal syndicate was the biggest scamming group ever to be raided by any global authority.
“The results spectacularly demonstrate the abject failure of our Federal Police to act effectively against the scourge of this ever-increasing threat to Aussie consumers; and we have to demand that things are done better,” he said.
It is a 7NEWS Spotlight exclusive every Australian must see.

This is a great day and justice for innocent Australians who have been duped in the most elaborate scam of all time. I am also speaking representing my Malaysian friends who have also fallen into this scam. (although much warnings have been given but greed conquers all) Unfortunately, these scammers knows "bits and pieces" of tactics on how to hide below radar with the assistance of some corrupted Malaysian officials as well. (I sincerely hope that these corrupted officials are caught soon)
I am so proud of MACC (backed up by special forces from various branches) for making Malaysia proud and respected. I am sure, by now, more trails of money have been discovered - possibly laundered in projects, various industries, black market, money exchange, FOREX, properties and so much more. Of course, we can't eliminate everything but at least we have crippled them serve to send a strong message to all other so-called sophisticated scammers not to mess around with the Malaysian authorities.
Congratulations again to : Liam, Michael, the unsung hero Andre and many more. Including Malaysian Immigration, Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission, Malaysia Cyber Security, Telekom Malaysia, Company Commission of Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Inland Revenue/Income Tax Board.

Off topic for this video. But another scam is Africans contacting the lonely older generation on Facebook and other sites. Or the older generation going on websites to connect with other lonely people. The Africans, usually from Nigeria, use pictures they find online of younger white handsome men or beautiful women pretending to be them. Then they will start asking for money, that they have a sick child, stuck in another country, or they are going to fly to see them but they can’t get their passport or airline ticket. Of course this happens after they have love bombed these naive older men or women, who do not understand technology, usually. They ask for gift cards, etc. If you know anyone risking this, share RUclips channel Catfished. It’s astounding that mostly elderly women send their hard earned savings and retirement to these scumbags!!!

Scammer: "I'm not saying anything without a lawyer." Liam: "You want a lawyer? Your gonna need more than a lawyer, mate." Liam should have said "You want a lawyer? That can be arranged. This is the type of person who I would say born to be evil. There is a special place in hell for people like him and I hope the judge will give him a lot of lashing.
I remember going to a trading company interview one time after I graduated. It feels like a spooky place and the boss looks like a thug. They are from Croatia. They want to offer me a job something to do with "trading" commodities and what not. I feel really suspicious with the company and I decided not to take the job. I have a feeling they are a scammer too.

A major issue with Australian Police not doing anything is that they are unable to do anything when the scammers are overseas. They can not take actions unless invited to by foreign Law Enforcement. The same goes for foreign Police taking action against Australian criminals.
India Police are well known for taking bribes, and letting scammers keep scamming. It's been well documented that they take bribes, and let scammers go free to continue scamming. They aren't the only country to have this issue/problem. The other issue is the police in other countries can't do much when the victim willingly but unwittingly gives their money to the scammers.
Governments around the world need to do more to up the ante so they can make scammers easier to catch and prosecute.
Also, there are pages on Facebook that have been created by scammers with the sole purpose of selling leads to other scammers. "Leads" are personal information, such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and bank details, etc. of victims who have been successfully scammed, and those who could be possible successful victims. Thousands of leads on just one page, and there are many MANY pages all selling "leads".

    • @mpras684

I endorse all your claims. But there is a global Common Law that if a victim, say in Australia, obtains a Court Order in his country, he can get the Australian Police to contact Interpol, who in turn liaises with the Police in that country to get the Criminal arrested. The Australian Police should have advised their nationals on the legal dispositions. Together they could have obtained results earlier, reducing the collateral damage.

    • @namewithheldbygoogleforsec673
      @namewithheldbygoogleforsec673 Год назад +1

@@sammyrnaj i understand that, but as i stated many of the foreign Police can't do much when the victim gives the scammers the money, even though it was through deceptive practices. In India the scammers get arrested, but let free because they tell the Police they were supplying technical support, and it is payment. The other issue is a lot of victims of scams are elderly and don't realise they have been scammed or a better way to put it is had money stolen, so they don't report it. So even if Interpol were involved, there needs to be more people reporting, and unfortunately there aren't enough reporting. And in some cases where Interpol have been involved they have not been able to do much.
I have scammers call me often, and I NEVER call them scammers. I call them exactly what they are --- Criminals.

@@diannelee1267 He is a good scam baiter, but the sad end result due to the corrupted Indian police, destroys his efforts. Of course he wasted their time at least, but this million dollar scam business is enormous.
The only way to get a lasting effect for the scam baiters is to be able to name and shame the scammers in every large newspaper in India and of course combine that with policemen (or federal variant) that’s not corrupted (absolutely not the local police).
This would be solved in a week if they scammed Indian citizens instead of mainly Americans. Same same with Russian hackers that know they must avoid Russian companies.
