Inside Shalom House, Australia’s ‘strictest’ drug rehab | Australian Story

  • Peter Lyndon-James is a former ice addict and criminal who now runs ‘the nation’s strictest’ drug rehabilitation centre.
At Shalom House in Perth, addicts agree to go ‘cold turkey’ off all drugs including cigarettes, get their heads shaved and go to Christian church services three times a week.
The "cold-turkey" detox and Peter's approach to rehabilitation has been considered controversial by some, but for many it's changing their life for the better.

I did not know much about Shalom House until about 1.5 years ago when a few of the men turned up at my church of worship.
What made me curious and have me turned around to see who was in the congregation was this beautiful voices coming from the back seats of the church. These men sang with so much enthusiasm and conviction that their voice soared like the eagle . I later realized that they were from Shalom House.
After the service they were invited to sit down and have some tea and coffee, I was very blessed to be volunteering that day in the welcoming lounge, so I had the chance to sit and talked with them. The boys are all so polite, well dressed and really nice people. It was a real pleasure to talk and share with them their life journey and experiences. Anyway to cut the long story short, I had a brief chat with the organiser and he briefly explain to me all about Shalom house. That day I went home from church with a bit of tears in my eyes, I was really touched that God has reached out to Peter and as a result have given hope and purposes to these men who are trying to break free from drug addiction.
A couple of months after the event , I rang Shalom house to see if they could help me out with some garden work. Not only did they do an outstanding and wonderful job, but they were also very reasonable and efficient. I was so impressed by their sincerity and willingness to go that extra mile. They were just so happy that someone is willing to give them a chance.
I pray that God will protect and bless Shalom house and its founders, please people support Shalom house for they are doing an amazing job.
    Thank you

Good words father.. (not sure if you're a father?).... but you know I got to be the devil's advocate. I respect people that step up and get their life back together... but I never understand this thing of humans that then honors them as "angels" and that they deserve immense praise. It's like... "hey dickwod.. you chose that life... you fell off... now you're back.. with the rest of us... well done... but hey... some out here never fell off.. they kept fighting, no matter how hard it got.. they never turned to and became absorbed in drug addiction (which is pure escapism)... so be proud.. YES, but quit blowing your trumpet because you realized running was not the solution.
I'm not speaking without knowledge either. I have a friend who is now in a rehab house.. (third attempt). I hope he really does make it work this time because he's left a trail of destruction. His family have suffered so much trying to help him but he went as far as to sell their property and steal money from them. There's always more to a story of an individual who descends into severe drug addiction. Even when they themselves repair, the destruction they cause never repairs. So for this, I really cringe when people then put these individuals on a pedestal. It completely disregards the pain they caused.. and the point I made earlier that, it all stems from them choosing to run away from difficulties in life. Difficulties which we all go through.
At the end of it all too.. THE MIND is not actually repaired, which is where the issue originates. Putting a burden upon yourself to STAY SOBER is still a form of escapism. Because you now live with that unresolved weakness. You fear that it will just take one slip and it's back to your old ways.. which is true.. because the addictive trait of that individual's mind was never actually addressed. Plus society remains the same. There will always be others around you who engage in recreational drug use.. plus alcohol is an Olympic Sport nearly!... and that weighs heavily on you as a Rehabbed Addict... because everyday.. is a constant battle.. which is why.. a person Sober, can instantly tell you how long they've been "clean".
Anyway.. my point is that as a collective, we need to not just look at the substance of abuse, but what led that mind to seek that substance to fill the void. Because it doesn't just apply to drugs.. it's also the cause of much of the violence we now take as part of modern, western life. GOD is a way, I respect that, but as an individual, your existence is yours and yours alone... and to truly rule that... is solely a thing of THE MIND... if one does not have that in order... the path shall always be broken.

@@marztar I know where you're coming from. But addiction is a disease. I believe the addiction gene is real. We all have some kind of addiction. For most it doesn't hurt others or bring us down. Like a gym junkie, or someone that is ocd with keeping a clean tidy home etc. All it takes is certain negative experiences, and or being at the wrong place at the wrong time when you are vulnerable and feeling lost, alone and frustrated with your life. We all have different coping mechanisms. A little praise for turning their life around is not calling them saints. Its for coming out at the end of a horrendous time, alive and some what a new person. And trust me they do try to make amends where possible. Its not an easy thing to do. It takes courage to face the carnage they have caused. Thank God that you are a strong accountable person.

@@jaggirl Dependency is coded into a system at the molecular level yes, but it was the choice of the entity which commands that system to create a repetition which would then lead to what we as that entity - Humans - classify as: Addiction.
There is no such "disease" which sweeps through a community and suddenly has a collectively wake up ADDICTED to a substance. Claiming such is a trait of humans which choose to avoid responsibility for their actions.
Using your example, a GYM JUNKIE is only created due to commitment to repetition. The default is to actually have an active membership and NOT go to gym repeatedly.
Escapism due to a void is prevalent in human societies, and this is the underlying cause of addiction. As a species though, we don't want to address that. It's much too difficult because the cause of it, is the very system(s) created by humans, in this path of "CIVILITY" that are to blame.
We are simply a broken expression due to our actions, yet we're attempting to shift blame towards our biology for everything from obesity to autism. Escapism is an easy mechanism to utilize.

Having been through rehab I can see how this would really work for so many people suffering from addiction. The pressure is taken off and you’re told that you’re being looked after. A routine is put in place and work on yourself starts. I still know quite a few people who are deep into their addiction who would benefit from a rehab facility like this. Peter is doing such an incredible job and ultimately saving lives and the tax payer money. Sometimes tough love is the only thing that will help to beat the addiction demons.

Rehab was really tough. I hated rehab and walked out twice, the second time I decided I would not go back. It was supposed to be a Christian rehab but the faith they pushed was nominal and charismatic, utter balloney. I got clean through the power of my faith in Christ. Clean now 7 months after 30 years of drug addiction. Jesus is the way. If you have Christ you can do anything. He has made me NOT want to take drugs.

I wish things like this existed for people that aren't religious. Unless you have health insurance in the US, you're stuck with religious organizations. I suppose it's better than nothing, but I feel like many of these places can be more faith based than treatment based and that doesn't do much for people who don't believe in God or that sort of thing. I think if people want to change enough though, they'll take what they CAN use and leave the rest.

    • @mercyjohnson6436
      @mercyjohnson6436 2 года назад

@@justthatgirl-ct4jo For one, this is not religion-based. It is God based or God-centric. Secondly, training and discipline are a must for true Godliness. There's no other means by which the fallen human race may be restored to the lost image & likeness of God in which they were originally created. So that, having come face to face with the Truth or the Lord - who is the ONLY ONE to have come NOT BORN of the cursed seed of the fallen man - they may in comparison realize to what extent they have fallen & depraved themselves. Also realizing that how they cannot even hope to come close to wholesome healing unless they have by seeking His surpassing Righteousness, which He alone was faithful to fully exemplify, fulfill and teach, are able to bring their 'warped trinity' to perfect unison and made truly whole again. Praise God Peter understands that enough to incorporate it as part of the rehabilitation program.
It is a pity the fallen human race do not realize how each one of them need to be rehabilitated and restored to God! Not just drug-addicts or excesses of the human society. Once again, Peter has proved himself faithful to set the example by not doing it coercively. A true mark of the truly Godly. For even God does not coerce, He only coaxes & implores. God does not threaten, He only warns/forewarns of the consequences. God does not drag anyone into His Kingdom against their will, He only invites. And to those willing to follow, God is Faithful to lead, provide for and sustain. Unlike any man who may pretend to lead but only as far as Death/the grave he has no way of escaping. God leads and sustains one all through one's temporal life in this world and far beyond the chains of Death/grave He alone was faithful to break & triumph over, into His eternal & abundant Life, fully restored to His perfect Image & Likeness and thus made worthy to dwell with Him eternally in His holy & eternal Kingdom.
Therefore, too bad for self-obsessed people like Geoff whose obvious arrogance found himself 'belittled' in the not-so-scientific world of God-gifted Faith. If he had any sense he would know what is Science if not the misappropriation and misuse of the Wonderful, Indomitable & Inimitable creation works of God seeking nothing but the unmerited glory of the utterly unworthy, fallen & accursed man!

I’ve watched this program about five times now and it strengthens me with dealing with my 21 year olds meth addiction,Ive also watched the tough love seminars and have used numerous things that Peter spoke about on my son,The tough love approach is the only way your going to turn your son or daughters life around,My son doesn’t live at home with us as a result of his violence,we’ve stopped enabling also,Peters right when he says the parents can be the worst thing for their drug addicted children especially if they enable the behaviour, what a wonderful human being Peter is especially to share your seminars and your story on RUclips with us mate you’ve single handedly repaired a broken family,we’ve still got a long way to go,I spend 1 day a week with my son to go out for lunch or go karting, that’s only if he’s sober and clean,I’ve set boundaries which he starting to respect,he’s managed to complete a construction course and he’s gained 6 machine tickets,we’ve sent resumes off and just waiting to hear back from different companies,a year ago things were really bad and violence house getting smashed up,was hard convincing my wife the tough love approach was the way to go but now she can see, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart👍

Longer term rehab of 3 months helped me to finally let go of my anger. I hope your son is doing OK and wanting help. No-one could make me want to change until i wanted it for myself. No matter how much damage I was causing others. It's good to hear that your setting boundaries to stay safe and still trying.

I have so much respect for all involved, from the staff to the residents choosing to change. It's one of the hardest but best decisions I made when i was younger and a day at a time, some wrongs get to be made right and you can truly find a better version of yourself. Nothing worked for me until I chose a longer-term rehab and this seems fantastic. The rules may seem tough but I can understand as the last thing I needed was a soft approach to getting my sh** together. Even private hospital clinics strip away privileges such as phones etc so this is nothing knew but the not smoking would be a struggle for me. I'm not a fan personally of faith-based services however I'm glad your services are available to those who are willing to put in the hard work. This is life or death for most and how good is it to see that's it's helping so many. Good on you guys and also shout of to your wife and children for sticking with you.

I'm glad that worked for you but it was the exact opposite for me. Isolating me from my support system only made my mental health issues worse. Being able to have my phone and be treated like an adult human while in treatment and having visitors in the facility that helped me remember what I was fighting for, being able to dress like myself and take MAT medication and not be forced into religious services changed my life.

Does he know that going cold turkey from Benzos or/And Alcohol, can kill you? He's only ever jumped of ICE which is not phsyically addictive, it's a walk in the park compared to Heroin/Methadone or Benzos/Alcohol, so him having the same standards for men who are in much worse situations is a bit bullshitty if you ask me.
I do however appreciate he's trying to help people, but shaving peoples heads and throwing them down the god route while risking peoples lives, isn't really something I can get behind "Australian of the year" lol

@S.Mack wow congrats on being 50 and dumb :)
The fact that I'm saying Benzo and Alcohol withdrawal can kill you, shows you that I don't deem this as a game grandpa.
You can't just throw someone with a big benzo/alcohol dependence into a scheme that has "No drugs for help" attuide, when the withdrawal can kill you, honestly I wish people used their brain a bit more. I'm younger than you but I've also done it ALL and studied a great lengths on this topic.
Yes people can get through without drugs, but it's dangerous for people who are on alcohol/benzos to do so and if you honestly didn't know that, then you know fuck all about basic addiction.

@@rungeon83 No one asked you... but Duh! He has a team of doctors and other professionals who work with the patients. There is no program in Australia that has a better success rate for people who don't quit. Maybe you claim to have a better way? If so, why aren't you out there rehabilitating addicts? Or are you just another knocker without an alternative?
