    The most bizarre thing is the seeming inaction by the Canadian Police. I would have thought that just one report by a backer, with all the evidence, would be a no brainer for investigation and prosecution. But perhaps everybody thought that somebody else would make a report but nobody did, resulting in nothing for the Police to investigate.

    • @Ajial01
      @Ajial01 11 месяцев назад +13

      I think this might be a problem with this sort of thing on the internet in general when it comes to people. When something like this happens everyone will scream and shout hoping it will help but nobody will think to actually do something, or like you said, they will think that there are so many other peoples screaming and shouting, one of them will do it. I remember in an MMO a couple of years back there was someone harassing people in game, it was getting quite out of hand and it eventually made its way to the forums and one of the developers replied with something like "Did nobody think to report this to us?" I guess everyone just assumed someone else did.

    • @mattwo7
      @mattwo7 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@Ajial01 The bystander effect is a helluva drug but that doesn't account for the victims, the ones who should've been doing the reporting in the first place. Assuming witnesses report anything isn't particularly smart.

      Preface - not a lawyer, and not Canadian, so possible I’m wrong here. But, there’s actually a good chance there isn’t a crime here, or that it would at least be difficult to prove one.
      Kickstarter campaigns are pretty explicit that what you are paying for is *not* a pre order, and the company doesn’t really have to ever deliver anything. So legally nothing was stolen from them.
      You could make a fraud argument, but, it sounds like the part where he took the money for his house happened a while after the campaign, making it hard to prove he intended to use the money for that purpose all along, which would be a requirement for a fraud prosecution.
      So the backers very likely don’t have a legal recourse here. More likely would be the other owners of the company, since they clearly did suffer harm here. However, I’m guessing that since the guy invested the initial 10k he was probably the majority shareholder in the company (which also explains control of the accounts). At that point issuing himself a “loan” for the purposes of helping to secure his housing would likely be within the scope of his powers as the owner of the company.
      Now, assuming he wasn’t, somehow, the sole owner with the actual creator of the printer as an employee for some reason this is still a pretty clear breach of fiduciary duty. That however is a civil thing, and if the other owner(s) if the company don’t bring an action there’s nothing the legal system can actually do. And it’s possible that even if the printer creator brought that action it would be a battle over whether he genuinely thought he’d be able to return the money once the house was built, and as such wasn’t actually in breach (guessing that wouldn’t ultimately fly, but no idea how much actually fighting that action costs all involved)
      You could *maybe* argue fraud in what sound like some communications where he said the money was in the bank but inaccessible when it wasn’t but that’s not likely something the police will bring unprompted, and especially without the associated civil matter being brought.
      TLDR - there’s a good chance that in this case stealing the money wasn’t actually a crime, and if the printer creator didn’t sue it’s likely he’d just get away with it.

Game looked like an amazing metroidvania but almost a year later with no updates past the one thanking everyone for hitting the funding goal. the kickstarter at one point got dmca'd because some of the music in one of the trailers was used without payment or even notifying the guy who made it. Looked more into the company behind it and they may possibly be overseas but lied about having their HQ in the states. the comments on the ks are depressing at the very least.

    2- I'm sorry but 10 people working on Ant simulator is a lie. Unless everyone was sitting around browsing social media, no way it took 11 devs to have that game made. 1 person project? Sure, i can even believe 2 or 3, but not 11.

    The Eric tutorials helped me learn a lot about unity, blender, gimp. I liked his channel for tutorials wish he never deleted them and never actually followed through with actually continuing to make them witch is why I stopped following him plus this whole thing about not being able to finish a game without large amounts of money to me is just not wanting to have to live responsibly and work harder to make a goal. I have been working for years to reach my goals and soon that work will pay off. I honestly think he got to a point with the ant sim that he wasn’t sure how to progress to make more money or he just didn’t want to be tied to his friends for the work he did and have to share the profits. I think it was a mix of friends partying too much and not all working at the same pace to be successful kinda weird now that Eric is Erica I think now.

I bet almost all of the pledges came from people anticipating that use case and not because they are too lazy to use their hands. Of course that's even worse, there are few things more despicable than giving the hope of freedom to disabled people and then stealing from them instead.

    "We only had a normal amount amount of business lunches, and reported them to the IRS" is not the iron-clad defense the ant guy's business partners seem to think.
    A tiny start up with no income shouldn't be having ANY expensed "business lunches".
    And "reported to the IRS", just means "We counted it as a 'business expense' to get a tax break." So that's not great either.
    "Business lunches" are for when you're already successful. They're not just a thing you get to do with company money the instant you have more than zero in your business account.

    I backed the game in 2013, with the idea that the game would be completed a year later in july 2014. I bought the digital version for PS4 (since it was in 2013, there options for Vita and WiiU..)
    Game got an early acces in february 2020! a whole 6 years after the game was supposed to be launched. We're in 2023 and the game's still in early access.
    No more updates on how and when it'll be released for PS4. Vita and WiiU got axed altogether.

    This is why as a game dev I fear trying to start my own. I swear I ain't aiming to scam, but shit takes a while with 2 people along with life getting involved albeit my main amount is relatively low compared to some I need only like 100 to 150k. That is because my computer is jank and I want a beastly bastard plus a good DAS storage system, that is a huge chunk of it the rest is just software and shit. Once that is done I can make games from here on out as long as everything is stable. It is fun when you go to move your mouse, it doesn't move, and you just here a bugs bunny voice in the back of your head mocking you, then it goes black and crashes, the answer to this crash has yet to be resolved.
    Sucks so many people scam people and fuck it for the rest of us. That is how it will always be, once space travel happens we we will have the same shit. Same with anything.

    • @Jorendo
      @Jorendo 11 месяцев назад +4

      a lot of "scams" are also beginner developers who underestimate how much time it costs to make a game and combined with a fulltime job and perhaps a family it is impossible for them to finish the game. Not really a scam but also a big group of developers who ruin it for everyone else. I'm sure you don't try to scam people but if you want to make games and earn money with it, make sure you have the proper hardware and stuff to begin with, don't rely on backers to fund you so you can buy a better pc to make the games. Have something to show, if it is your first game ever euh...don't go asking money for it, release some small games first, too many wannabe developers make that mistake as well, also adding to a bad reputation for Kickstarter and the likes.
      "Once that is done I can make games from here on out as long as everything is stable." Here is your biggest problem, why don't you have games already? A janky PC can't be the excuse cause you say you are a game dev, so shouldn't you have things to show already? If you work for a game company, then surely you can show people what you made there, that should help with kickstarting a game, but again, have things to show for and don't have your future of your own published game depend on backers to finance your PC to work with when that is one of the things you already need to have.

    • @Grimeaper
      @Grimeaper 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Jorendo I gots plenty to show I have plenty of models I made and I could complete th game with what I currently have, just it becomes more of a struggle due to random crashes, and storage getting smaller than expected.
      I only have large game ideas and I do not like trying to create anything for mobile because it is just not my cup of tea. How they do DLC etc and I couldn't developed for mobile since my phone was a lot of generations behind.
      It is not that my PC can't do it, it's more like my PC is gasping like a dying horse more and more everyday since it has to do all kinds of things besides creating games.
      I dunno what is wrong with the thing honestly. My fault for building it instead of getting one that is properly built I feel but then again maybe not.
      Right now my coder has vanished on me he does that sometimes so I am left in the air waiting for him to get his ass back here.
      You could say a new PC etc is for insurance, if you will to insure that it would get built instead of me relying on a PC that crashes randomly for no reason sporadically nearly once a day. Because nothing like losing progress all of a sudden. Even Auto Saves get corrupted sadly.
      If you want to you can see our game pages. One of them is sorta small and could be completed easily and fast but my coder wants to work on the bigger one for now wherever he is. You not wrong we see what AAA is doing and go we can do it then we forget about life, eating, etc.
