I'd give that repro guy $1 just for NOT editing out the part where his cat knocks the camera over. I know the dude is just SO dedicated to his crappy expensive repro carts being his sole focus that he isn't going to let "cat" waste his valuable time. He is completely busy re-labeling AliExpress Chinese bootlegs he doesn't have time to edit his pitch video. That's dedication!
Smash Overload was such a scam that it apparently was what kickstarted the current Smash Remix project, a mod for Smash 64 that adds actual new characters, stages, items and even modes! Two of the characters from Overload are even in the game with fully unique movesets (Conker and Goemon)
Smash remix is a amazing mod. Basically a true expanded game
Plot twist; the cat was actually Hiroshi Yamauchi reincarnated, searching for licensing fees.
Way too indirect for Yamauchi. He'd rise from the grave and strangle you with his cold, dead hands.

Or, he could've shown the cat some love. People love animals, especially cats. He could've made a joke about it, how even his cat is eager to see the project launched or something silly like that. Honestly, he seemed ashamed of himself from the start, which is good. Hopefully he never tries to pull something like that again.

I still can't get over that the Areal guys faked that letter from Vladimir Putin about supporting their game. Not only is it ridiculous on its face, it's aged absolutely terribly. It didn't even sound good at the time.

I agree. That little Mario cartoon from that bad ROM hack crowdfunder WAS freaking hilarious. Know what it reminds me of? Anyone remember an early 00's Newgrounds cartoon called "Mario Twins?" I remember a really bad, unofficial sequel called "Sonic Twins" where the guy clearly couldn't act or match the odd accents from the original video. That. It reminds me of the knockoff version of a dumb early 00's internet video.
I have siblings who are twins and to this day I still say "you say you want ice cream cone and both of them say yes."

The biggest crowd funded game scam of all time is still (and always will be) Star Citizen by Roberts Space Industries. It's raised over $500M and the main game has still not released.
Oh come on, I'm sure at 2billion the game will be released... you know, which the heat death of the universe happens.

Wait isn't the idea of a suitcase without a handle the dumbest idea in the world? Someone's going to steal it like right away I mean I know it's annoying to shlep a suitcase but there's a practical reason why you want to hold on to your suitcase at all times so no one takes it
If you're talking about that roomba suitcase, it does have a handle, it's just hidden. What's boggling to me is the fact you're gonna have to either check it every time you travel or just not even get to use it at all because of the fire hazard
Kickstarter should charge some $100 for starting each campaign.

Im enjoying a kickstarter game actually. Bloodstained ritual of the night. I like that its a spirtual successor to metroidvania games.
I love that game. A good example of the spiritual successor kickstarter. Certainly helped the reputation of kickstarter game campaigns when mighty number 9 affected it… Helps that Iga didn’t overpromise
If anything, these scams (as well as Early Access) taught people ins and outs of proper game development, how long stuff tends to take, how to spot games that overpromise, etc. which in future may produce managers who actually know how stuff work and don't rush development with unreasonable deadlines. Rushed games will still happen, but hopefully less of them.
Which is IMO a good thing, even if it was a painful lesson to some wallets.
Love how STALKER 2 was confirmed cancelled but later on was confirmed by Microsoft to be back in development for the Xbox and PC, but now it's up in the air if development is haulted due to Putin poopin in a tin and getting angy at Ukraine for having freedom and wanted a piece of it.
Also, Wii U Daily is now MyNintendoNews so they're sitll around
Modern GSC is based in Cyprus tho... (let's not forget that company closed doors in 2011 and everyone left). They can develop their game however they want. They just like taking money from pre-orders for years I guess. And their recent video from closed Xbox presentation looks surpisingly similiar to Areal video lol.

Just throwing it out there for anyone who had their heart broken by smash overload.
There is a real project that has been available for a long time called smash remix, this is much more than overload could ever dream to be.

Crowdfunding will never become good enough for me to trust it.
It's not the concept of crowdfunding that's the problem IMO, but how it's used by idiots and scammers to try to fund their dreams or just try to con the gullible.
Personally, I see no issue with something like Patreon and have actually used it in the past when it's been very clear what's being offered for what you spend. When done right you're just paying for a service or bonus content on top of what the artist produces that's publicly available.
Apart from that, it's also a useful platform for funding things for people or causes you actually know. We've used crowdfunding to help raise money for local charities or for getting presents for workmates' birthday or leaving parties.
I believe they serve a useful purpose, I just think funding someone's idea for a video game isn't one of them.

Agreed, some actual good games have come from it, like the Divinity Original Sin games but most of the time they are either scams or shovelware level quality.

I was one of the early Areal backers. The Wii U Daily investigation was what clued me in and I canceled my pledge. I hadn't thought about the campaign since then. Great find! (As an aside, I have an idea for a future Kickscammers, involving a game that has been in development hell for 9 years but is still technically not canceled. Let me know if you're interested, Daniel!)

The funniest thing to me about the first campaign is that in his “update video” he was straight up just using any other typical Hong Kong multicart, just taken out of its shell.
Hell, I straight up have that exact cart, immediately recognizing it when he was in the menu. 😂
Mine is red with Tiny Toons and Ninja Turtles art on the label, but the games were all the exact same and same order, too.

Hmmm....While the Stalker 2 campaign wasn't right it would take more than Vice and Kotaku to get me to believe it. They are some of the worst publications in video game history. The gaming side of Vice is no more for that reason and Kotaku is rightfully circling the drain as we speak. They have nothing on you Snopes.
Eh. Wolfyy7 was already extremely late to making SMRPG2 anyway. We already have SMRPG2 in all but name only- that's Paper Mario.
PM went through the majority of its development with the name Super Mario RPG 2, as late as October 1999 from what I can find- less than a year from launch date.
Story goes that Squaresoft didn't approve of the name- prompting Nintendo/IntSys renaming SMRPG2 to Mario Story, and Paper Mario internationally.
It's funny that we getting a remake of Super Mario RPG on Switch. Hope Wolfy is happy wherever he is online. lol
And now Nintendo is releasing a full remake of Super Mario RPG that looks incredible. I bet Avi Wolfson would like some schnapps with his humble pie

*For those of you who are still curious about the four characters in the Smash Overload, here's the information I have.*
*Banjo*
- Teamed up with Kazooie and actually made it to an official Super Smash Bros. game. Some of the other Banjo-Kazooie characters also made it as spirits you can fight against.
*Goemon*
- Got accepted as a Smash Remix character
- Turned into a Mii Swordfighter costume (better than nothing)
*Rayman*
- Turned into a spirit battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
*Conker*
- Also got invited into Smash Remix alongside Goemon
*I for one wouldn't mind Rayman being in the next installment of Super Smash Bros.*

He and others clearly demonstrate AM2R was done with the team making no money from it. Yet he claims the nintendo rep he talked with stated such projects were done in secrecy to make money, but his wasn't. Which could be further from the truth considering most of those projects weren't hushed since everyone on RUclips talked about them, and his was the only one ( or mainly) asking for money upfront lol.

In case you have a part 2 search for Trajes Fatais (Traf) a brazilian fighting game that never happened and would become an important part of Pocket Bravery history.
Trajes Fatais was not a scam but simply a failure - doesn't help that one of the team members left and took the funds with them.

Its not anywhere close to the level of absurdity as any of these, but if you need future content, maybe look into Rad Rodgers kickstarter. The game did get released, but the company behind it was completely scummy with how they handled backer rewards, including promising a physical copy of the game, only for it to be swapped out for a soundtrack CD with no prior warning except for a small piece of paper included in the box AFTER it was shipped out. This was followed by backers rightfully complaining, them promising they would produce the copies for backers, stringing them along via updates saying they would have information in "two more weeks" of their status and.....the company/rights to the game got bought up by another publisher and the creators wiped their hands clean of ever having to fulfill any more rewards or interact with backers again.
