Whoever wrote that page clearly never hosted a minecraft server or played an MMO. The resources needed to generate and load "infinite" territory for millions of players at the same time would be immense. AAA MMOs have lag problems, and they have different servers, a player cap, and a finite map. And if to that you add millions p2p connections it can only get worse.

There's already an "MMO" that allows the players to make any world/game they want... Its called VR Chat; and its very rare to actually see someone try to make a game within it though.
second life also did it. Players had free access to the dev tools to make anything, hell... at one point real embassy had land in second life. real banks had land in second life. vrchat is more/less the vr version of second life.
The closest thing is Minecraft. People have made minigames, people have made adventure maps that feel like their very own games, and they even made minecraft in minecraft (although not fully featured)... The world is virtually infinite, the biomes are plenty, and everyone can have fun in it lmao.
The game name Dream World is already trademarked by a browser mmo that was incredibly successful a decade ago and is still active even after the death of Flash.
Just gonna go ahead and download the Unreal Engine and download some assets, it really seems to pay off! :D Jokes aside, how did this kickstarter EVER get to reach this point? Ridicilous.

People who paid money for this are blind... I mean, I'm not professional game developer by any means, but I've made my own game engine and its nothing amazing and I can tell that that's not what professional lighting, or decent lighting, or passable lighting looks like... That just looks like lighting that I had in my engine when I copy pasted code from learnopengl.com for basic phong shading for that damn ugly sphere that has surface values set to show off specular lighting. In general, from previews, everything looks like a bunch of students just imported few random assets into unity and setup a scene over a weekend for their midterm project demo... Its like they know just as much about games as I do, basically nothing. So again, the only real plausible explanation is that those people are completely blind. And that's just aesthetics, remember that I didn't even begin to talk about how boring this is. "Player driven game" is keyword for "no real content, uhhh, the multiplayer chat is the content!".
Funny thing is there are assets you can buy for less than $500 that would be a better MMO out of the box than this directly off the UE marketplace. Up that to $1k and you can even get some nicely animated 3D models and UI.

there's 5 major archetypes of biomes. There's somewhere around 50 subtypes of biomes that you could reasonably divide down into. Still not the at least 2000 they promised but hey it's something
Honestly, the core of what they've described that would make their games so innovative already exists. It's called Second Life. It's pretty much entirety player-generated content, from the character models to the locations. You can be almost anything, build any kind of setting, have pets, and people have even built interactive systems for dueling and minigames. I've seen a scale replica of EPCOT in Disneyworld with functioning rides. My wife built a space station with vehicles that can be flown and fought. She has a fully-functioning Tron arena. Second Life is also clunky as hell and makes no attempt whatsoever at design cohesion, because everything is player-generated and the core controls and tech are ancient. I think a modernized SL could actually be a great thing, although it would take years for it to build a market of assets like SL has. The problem is, these guys are just making a vague promise of "the content will be infinite because it will be player-generated" without offering any kind of meaningful or new infrastructure to support that. They also can't even decide if they're trying to build a player-generated world or a developer-lead PvE experience. They keep making promises about core systems that they would have to develop, like pets and PvE creatures and housing, without showing any degree of competence to produce those aspects.
The added caveat of Second Life is that the different realms that players make don't all exist on the same map simultaneously. They are, effectively, walled off from each other. You know, like servers. Otherwise the game would melt even the highest end computers.
@@Sorrowdusk Not exclusively but it's definitely there. There's a lot of creativity, but since there's basically no censorship there will always be a chunk of that creativity going towards lewds. There's a location-based maturity rating system though.

When they read this, the started laughing so hard they cried.

This actually reminds me of another mmo, manyland. It's a free 2D mmo where you make your own items and skins and even code them. Very limited, but it does follow the same ideas of infinity, however more than 1 world with players in it. It's not very big, or complex, but it seems to still mostly get this done and played for free. It lags alot, lots of glitches and low security, but I still find it interesting how similar they are in concept.
The one thing I could be possible is the biome claim. In games, “biomes” usually don’t refer to the same things as the IRL world. It is possibly pulling a Minecraft or Terraria where “biomes” are very loose.

For the first half of the video I really thought the specific accusation of "scam" was inappropriate -- it seemed like this was just the classic vague, over-ambitious MMO promises from two dudes who are in so far over their heads that they don't even realize it, but once you got to the donor wall I changed my mind. This project probably started off as simple well-meaning incompetence but somewhere along the way it definitely became a grift.

For those non UE4 devs, here's a fun fact. World positions are limited to 20km squared this is an engine limitation and networking gets all fucked if a player passes this bounds. This is because your position is relative to a world origin existing at 0, 0, 0 (xyz). UE4 is not built for "infinite map" MMOs unless you manually enable world position resetting which essentially allows repositioning of the origin on the fly when someone passes that threshold, you will very likely still end up need to write many custom functions and extensions to the engine to make things work the way you want. Something that takes quite some years of UE4 dev and an understanding about how the engine works. This means compiling from source and considering these guys have just put together a project from marketplace assets, I highly doubt this will be the case.
Just for the record: Unreal Engine 4 (the engine they are using) is 100% free to use and royalty free for commercial allocations up until the user has generated one Million dollars in gross quarterly review, in witch case you must then pay only a 15% royalty. Access is unlimited, source code is available (Semi open-source) and there are zero stipulations concerning publishing and 3rd party support. You are even given access to Epic's multiplayer infrastructure for no additional fees. Many of these qualities are standard for most other game engines and software development suites. Addendum: Also as a point on "shaders"; the shaders themselves are in fact already included with each and every visual asset on display in this "MMO". Shaders are also a varied and highly stylistic element of computer generated art; assets made in different art styles are going to have VERY different approaches in how they use shaders. The issue you are noticing is not a lack of shaders, but that, not only are the art styles clashing horribly, many of these scenes lack any attention to lighting and even shadows at most times. Lighting (witch I think you are confusing for "shaders") is a discipline unto itself. Unreal Engine, however, gives you literally every thing you need to intuitively and easily implement just about any lighting style one could imagine, OUT OF THE BOX. DRAG & DROP. NO CODE OR PURCHASE REQUIRED. They have simply neglected to actually implement any of these stock features, most likely out of a lack of basic understanding. So your core point is most likely still true.
PvP in FF14 is usually just smacking your heads against others in huge groups. Nobody knows what is going on, it can be fun at the time, but at the end it leaves you with a headache and a difficulty in remembering what had happened. If you count the unique variants of each of the 5 TYPES of biomes, there are like... 30 biomes. But most people won't be able to tell a swamp from a wetland so...
About the biomes: the Frackin Universe mod for Starbound includes tons of bioms. It's actually quite simple to create a biome concept. Poison, Alien, Treasure, Meat, whatever. Making a biome for a sci-fi game is quite simple, you can take any physical matter and turn it into a potential biome. What about a "flesh" biome, with a sea of blood, an ocean of pus, dirt made of ground meat and grass made of nerves? If you want to make bizarre biomes, you need to be creative.

As a cyber security engineer, I almost cried at their P2P connection.
I don't have a ton of experience with P2P personally but Red Dead Online uses it and it's a security disaster from what I've heard. And the player base is significantly smaller than what this disaster of a Kickstarter is suggesting.
Even if they sort out the MASSIVE issues with security concerns, the sheer lag of relying on hundreds of hundreds of peer to peer connections to maintain your player locations, interactions, and so on would be a laggy, delayed mess.

Is that kermit the frog with two samurai swords smoking a blunt?
The added caveat of Second Life is that the different realms that players make don't all exist on the same map simultaneously. They are, effectively, walled off from each other. You know, like servers. Otherwise the game would melt even the highest end computers.
I thought second life was only for kinky furry RP stuff. I forgot about it, I never tried it myself

Addendum:
Also as a point on "shaders"; the shaders themselves are in fact already included with each and every visual asset on display in this "MMO".
