    The real answer is, OSRS is genuinely fun without being mentally taxing. It's what people want in video games lately. A game they can afk thousands of different tasks and still have fun progressing. Afk is a loose term, honestly it should be called "attention free" tasks. The point is, it's what we like deep deep down. We don't want to always be utterly maxed out on adrenaline playing call of duty every day. And if you do, and you are depressed, ayyeee here's your sign...
    OSRS is the embodiment of "Achievement" and without pay to win bs it remains something people revere in terms of the accomplishments some accounts can achieve. ANY account can achieve, and just by playing the game as casually as possible. Then you get into late game and get into more complicated things and it's just amazing and satisfying.
    Just my opinion :)

      It's kinda funny and feels like we've come full circle in that regard, because I remember when I was playing around 2005-2007 as a teenager, a lot of people had this attitude of "You guys don't play with game music muted? lol what's wrong with you, the game's music sucks!" while blasting their favourite rock band or something haha.
      I don't think I've ever seen a video from back then that actually just had the game music, there was always some loud track playing over the top, but these days it's super common for OSRS youtubers to make a video with some calm in-game track in the background.

    I think the main reason games like this do well is because there's no artificial FOMO interjected into it the way WoW and FF do with gear treadmills. It's the same reason GW2 does well, the world feels more alive. It's more of a matter of experiencing the game, rather than rushing to a specific goal.
    I quit WoW and FF when I realized I just didn't care about getting to max level to do content that would largely be irrelevant a year down the line. It just felt temporary and fruitless.

    • @t-yoonit

      Marstead covered the evergreen content and items very thoroughly in his video about why RuneScape is awesome. I won't link it because I don't want to be that kinda guy. But those are keywords if you feel inclined to search for it.

    • @undercoverspy123
      @undercoverspy123 3 часа назад

      FF's gear treadmill is basically non existent, you can clear 99% of content with marketboard items, and getting BIS is guaranteed due to it's book/tome vendor system. Infact some people rant about how much they hate theres no gear to chase after in FF, but most of the time you are chasing Glamour (the look) and not stats (this is how I perfer it) WoW on the otherhand can be extremely gear treadmilly depending on expansion.

  • @AssortedFern
    @AssortedFern 7 часов назад +1

    Especially after watching, I think there are some similarities between Minecraft and RuneScape. Both drop you into a world with simple blocks and components without any initial goals or obvious progression path. Neither force you to do anything you don't want, but provide a context that's interesting enough for players to want to explore and expand on without much preempting.
    With modern MMOs, you might get sudden invisible walls, pointing quest arrows, a flat progression path with everything you need to do prepositioned for you to get it done without thinking.
    These things make playing easy, but removes player agency. I love planning "oh, i gotta get to this level so i can unlock this so i can complete this", and i love staring at the skill progression charts, thinking about what i could unlock, then making a plan and making it happen. In contrast to a game holding my hand and going "Oop we're going up the stairs now! Place your left foot here, and then your right foot here!"

    Mr. President. I have been sharing this exact narrative with people extensively over the last month so happy to hear almost the exact same love reflected in your video.
    I think another thing that adds to it's popularity is the that all your progress and grinds are permanent. And all new content is optional (unless you play an iron) and you can do it at your own pace. When new items come into the game it doesn't make your current items obsolete, if I haven't played in 6 months usually the new quests guide me to the new areas and bosses, if I want to go play another game for a few months everything is waiting for me when I come back.

    A lot of mmos worlds are vast empty zone filled with a lot of mobs that are categorized by how strong they are, so it basicly goes to: I am that strong I go there, when im stronger i go elsewhere and never return.

    One aspect of OSRS that is a pillar of it's success is how engaged every player feels to the greater community.
    Whether you you're in a clan, sitting at GE, playing mini games, skilling, bossing, raiding or whatever you do, you'll always run into people. Some other MMOs aren't as engaging in that aspect. Some you can basically play the entire game with needing to engage in the community at all.

    1. there isn’t another game that plays like it.
    2. it came out during the early 2000s a time where most of us were getting into online gaming for the first time so it’ll always have the nostalgia of being most people’s first mmo.
    3. everything involved trading with real players (and no auction house) the game had a large and social community and while a lot of that has died there’s still more social elements compared to most mmos now.

    I love getting sidetracked in osrs and do fishing, so I could do cooking, so I could kill monsters, so I could get the specific drop I'm after so I could do something else later on etc etc. It's a wonderful rabbit hole to go down and an experience any other MMO has never given me.

    RuneScape is one of the only games out there that I feel can legitimately deliver on that notion of “a world where you can do whatever you want”.
    Many games try and claim this, but ultimately fail. Most open world games that tout “player freedom” are restricted down to only letting the player do whatever content the developers specifically crafted for them to engage with. And a lot of them end up adopting the same ideas as each other, which results in the things that you’re able to do, becoming the things that you already _can do_ in every other game.
    This is where RuneScape’s simplistic mechanics and “dull” gameplay turn into an advantage that it holds over those other games. Developers tend to focus on doing one thing extremely well - combat, story, etc. - and not much else. As a result, you could never have the breadth of content that RuneScape offers in those other games. You couldn’t have all of the 23 skills in a game like Elden Ring, or a game like Baldur’s Gate 3, or in any other game that was an open world / RPG. Because it would just require too much time and resources in order to match the level of choice offered by RuneScape in those other games.
    The basic point-and-click controls, the tile-based movement, the “dated graphics” - all of these aspects of the game that are _perceived_ as drawbacks, from an outside perspective, are the whole reason why were able to have a giant world where almost everything is interactive and beneficial to gameplay.
    You won’t get the same _amount_ of options in most other games that you can with RuneScape, and that’s what makes it different. That’s why it’s so special and why there’s nothing else like it.

    Watched this while standing and wacking at a bush in the jungle and having a snake attack me the entire time to get a gout tuber in order to work towards my medium karamja diary which will probably take me 3-6 hours. But while I do this 3-6 hour grind I'm also simultaneously working towards 60% Tai Bwo favour which will allow me to do the my arms big adventure quest which is why I decided to go for the gout tuber in the first place. But since I'm already getting my favour up for trading sticks I might as well work towards the 4000 something trading stick requirement for the brimhaven dungeon shortcut. Ahh, if I'm already in karamja I might as well... Ah fuck not again. What quest was I trying to do?

    I love runescape because no matter how much or how little time I have, I can progress towards something. Games like wow put you increasingly further behind if you don’t play for awhile. RuneScape, you quit for however long you want and your pretty much exactly where you left off which as I get older and have increasingly less time makes RuneScape just increasingly appealing

    I love the grinds. I got the 600 beginner scroll emote, and it felt so satisfying. There is a linear path, but there are so many ways to play the game that it can always change for players. Also, a lot of games now are all about graphics and lack depth,and runescape lore runs deep, but it isn't necessary to learn it to progress. The chaos of it is appealing to me. I go to 301 sometimes just to watch the ge go nuts.

    I never played as a kid, started in 2022. I think the main point is having motivation to progress from the start, I got hooked on OSRS PK videos and the wildy as my main game growing up was DayZ and the wildy is quite a similar concept to DayZ. That motivation prior to playing is what pushed me past the 'I don't know what I'm doing phase'

    Because OSRS is "safe", and of course because it is a genuinely good game. It doesn't have pushy microtransactions, it hasn't been designed to be frustrating in order to boost MTX sales, it most likely won't crash and burn overnight(again). It has no FOMO, you can logout, then login 1½ years later and pick off exactly where you left off. All your of progress intact, none of it invalidated let alone outright removed.
    In short everything we've come to detest in modern MMOs and games in general just isn't present in OSRS. It is as its name suggests, Old School.

    I don't play as much as a few years ago since trying to finish up my grad school program, but in my opinion the reason why osrs is my favorite mmo is because it has the best long term progression. For many mmo's the main thing that ruins the fun is when the developers push out some new expansion, making all your gear worthless hence devaluing all your hard work. Osrs practically never does this; can walk away and play other games and come back to find all your gear and progress is still fine so can pick up where you left off. That combined with the sheer difference in your skill as you play game and learn mechanics; starting fighting lil rats and by end game doing crazy difficult gameplay on bosses. Honestly excited as fuck to play group ironman with girlfriend cause ironman seems like even more fun than main

    The real answer, you can play it with your friends or you can play it solo. You can play it when you are taking a shit, you can play it afk at work. You can play it in an uber. You can enjoy it while not progressing. You always have something to do. You don’t have to do all of it. You can do some of it. You can do the other something of it. It’s just chill bro.
