This scam is more entertaining than the actual game could ever be. (I know I wrote the same considering Chronicles of Elyria ;) Maybe this will become a whole new genre "Fraud Games" or something like that...)
I remember being so extremely tempted to back chronicles of Elyria just so I could play the test build but I’m glad I held out. Will be even extra careful now
I wonder how many MMOs using crowdfunding have met their initial launch goal and never released a playable multiplayer game of any sort to the backers. It has to be close to 100 at absolute minimum.
I dunno if "trainwreck" is the right word - this is working out *_exactly_* as planned. The scammers behind it are going to walk away with giant piles of money. It's disgusting, and it's wrong in every way, but as far as I can see the phrase is "Massive Success."

People like this bring down the entire industry of indie games, It's such a shame. It's also a shame Kickstarter aren't more diligent with their selection process, this isn't the first scam I've seen nor will it be the last. Devs work tirelessly for years only to dream of reaching a similar backing goal and many still fail because of their marketing efforts. It's the age-old case of marketing > product. Unfortunately, Kickstarter is an incubator for people selling polished turds. There needs to processes that hold people like this accountable for their actions. People like you are currently the best shot we have at exposing these projects and warning the public, although in this case it still succeeded... Zackary is so good a gaslighter that her ex-fiance still believe he is not trying to scam anyone! My prediction is that they will deliver a botched single-player alpha of the game and put the blame on each others.
My prediction is they will do like No Man's Sky, but in a way that's malicious from the beginning. They will create what is essentially a single-player game, if they're even capable of that, and go with "OH LOOK the game is SO BIG AND INFINITE that you will never see two players bump into each other!"
Do you? Ultima Online launched their paid beta. It was glorious. Of course, this was simply because the only way to distribute the game client was by mailing a CD (56k was a _great_ internet back then), so they humbly asked their supporters to cover the costs (ended up something like $5, in then-dollars, of course). I would have loved to see the faces on the EA's "is this a worthwhile venture?" department when they realized the game they projected would sell at most 50k copies over its life got more than a 100k+ people to basically sign up as unpaid beta testers _and paid for it_ :D At least we know some things don't change - EA is still as ridiculous as ever.
@@LuaanTi Well yeah there were exceptions like that, but I used to browse websites that cataloged MMOs that were in beta testing phases. Usually I could just sign up, download, and jump right in. I tested a ton of MMOs that way back in the day. These days they almost always want money up front to gain "early access".
@@Tall_Order Those MMO catalogues still exist, and still work just fine. I found a lot of interesting little games that way myself over the years ;) One of the things that can really hurt a small MMO starting out is when they get a huge influx of people when someone covers the game, utterly disrupting the game, causing performance issues and all that - and you can't react to it very fast, and even if you could help with extra hardware and such, there's a good chance you'll never get that money back. Heck, AAA developers still launch with infrastructure that can't handle peaks (even though they could work around it without wasting the infrastructure). Paying for early access isn't that bad, if you already have something to show for it.
My first thought on the original Kickstarter video was "why is a super talented Google Engineer working as a waiter?". Then came the rest of his transparent sob story, heck he even failed at pretending to shed a tear at his own bad acting. I bet they're gonna just run away with the money , this is how every scam goes : They advertise it , setting up the trap for the foolish people that don't know any better and when they have enough money they either release a crap product ( a video game in this context ) to avoid the law or run away to another country if they're really on the wanted list .
@@PolishJohnWick They will definately just take the money, this is an outright scam. There's is no way they can ever deliver the game they are promising. Even without knowing who is involved anyone that knows a little about game development will be able to tell you it's impossible. My guess is they will eventually release a shoddy broken alpha full of bought assets plonked into a world before they get bored and move onto the next scam.
The worst thing about this whole situation is how many more people will now refuse to back real projects that genuinely need the funding because they've been burnt by garbage Kickstarters like this. "Kickstarted MMO" is already a pejorative term among gamers (even with a few successes). For the most part, outside of a desperate few, people are not going to fall for it.
The "kickstarter" part is most bizarre lmao. "Early access" has been a meme model that basically makes you pay them to playtest a build. How ironic is that? There used to be times when people used to be paid to playtest things, or whatever the project, doesn't stop at the games. Meanwhile, now instead of early access, you pay with your money so someones elses "business" can exist. Early access requires to setup a team and actually make a debug build other people can play, kickstarter needs nothing lmao. How much further back will we go?
@@kirayoshikage4057 Its fucking called "investing" dude Like Idek what this video is about but Kickstarter is literally just the logical evolution of investment.

Thank you so much for talking about this Josh. Your act of investigating these manipulative schemes has restored a little bit more of my personal faith in humanity and only stands to make the MMO genre better.
I kinda just found out about this project and I've been catching up on older stories. At this point I've seen the meme version of the Kickstarter video so often I actually was expecting the guy to say "we put together a discord channel! And it... Left me" when your video got to that part lol
I saw an ad for this on Facebook, and was like "how are people interested in this? It's so obviously a scam." and then pushed it out with no idea it would get funded. I am absolutely baffled that so many people have actually devoted MONEY to this?!

well thing is i think they might've paid some smaller content creator to say some script and to post it on sosmed like twitter, and then use it as "evidence" that people do think that way about the game. check out their twitter account and you can see that they retweeted bunch of this possibly fake reviews or feedbacks
thank you a lot for the research and update on this very unfortunate marketing scam turn into pyramid scheme, the impartiality is very much appreciated.
Im laughing my ass that they already got their cash and then some and are still circling for more. And it looks good on their part when they jump ship to an actual company.

Very well done. It is a shame that some people take advantage of others for their own design, and sadly a lot of desperate gamers will fall into this trap. Lets hope they see your video before they commit anything to this project. Thanks Josh.
Honestly, I am here for the drama. As someone somewhat invested in publicly backed games and tech I always love seeing them advance and succeed, this one obviously isnt...and I really feel that should be massively obvious to people. The promises they make, the mysterious tech they would need to develop to make it happen it feels so fake and crazy. Cloud imperium games are actively making the tech games could use to connect tousands of players with very advanced graphics and gameplay, thats a studio putting in the time and effort...and its taking them years, yet these two guys are just gona make it work cause they want to? its insane. The news about this stuff has just become a shitshow to watch crash and burn.
When KiraTV showed the screenshots i was surprised and felt that it was odd that he was doing so... They were personal conversations, and he didn't blur anything. I know KiraTV meant well and I really enjoyed his dedication to making the video, but I have a feeling that he didn't directly ask if he could put the screenshots in his video and just assumed. I'm a bit glad how it happened because it was very interesting, but im not surprised they weren't intended to be shared publicly. Great vid, these two "developers" give me such bad vibes especially when watching that pity-me video. After knowing people like that personally, just yuck.
Eh. Depends if they live in a two-party-consent state or not. There are places where merely having the conversation is unspoken permission to record and later use the recordings. I would Imagine PMs are the same thing legally.
Josh color corrected his videos. If you ever want proof a RUclipsr LISTENS to your feedback, *this is it*. This man is a dream. A content creator above all others.

This scam is more entertaining than the actual game could ever be. (I know I wrote the same considering Chronicles of Elyria ;) Maybe this will become a whole new genre "Fraud Games" or something like that...)
I adore gaming drama of this kind - it's really entertaining.
We were waiting for a game but we didn't know we were already playing the real game
I remember being so extremely tempted to back chronicles of Elyria just so I could play the test build but I’m glad I held out. Will be even extra careful now
I think it already is a new genre: pathfinder online, embers of Caerus, shroud of the avatar, dark age of Camelot... this one though is a new low.
I wonder how many MMOs using crowdfunding have met their initial launch goal and never released a playable multiplayer game of any sort to the backers. It has to be close to 100 at absolute minimum.
Holy shit, this is a trainwreck happening in real time... and I refuse look away.
This story is as old as humanity itself. More people should learn to recognize a scam.
I made popcorn 🍿
I dunno if "trainwreck" is the right word - this is working out *_exactly_* as planned.
The scammers behind it are going to walk away with giant piles of money.

I guess it depends on how we define the project's purpose.
As a game, it's a fucking disaster.
As a scam, it's a triumph. It's a huge success.
I will never understand how many people fall for these sorts of scams so easily
I'll never understand how people join cults where the main honcho's big idea is for you to stop banging your wife because "God" told him he should do it instead of you ... but people have fallen for that kind of thing. People are fucking weird.
There's 7.6 billion people on Earth. Say a good billion *at least* are utter smoothbrain morons... one can make quite the killing.
Credulity and hope I guess.
They prey on the mentally weak. In some weird way it's even better to make the scam obvious. You don't want to waste your time with people who are mentally sound. A lot of scams target old people in the early stages of dementia. I'm not saying the people who funded it had dementia but they were not mentally well in some way.
Wishful thinking, lack of fulfillment in their actual life, general stupidity... lots of reasons. These are the same types of people who spend thousands of dollars on anime gacha games to get their "waifu".
Just noticed "SSX Tricky" for the PS2 in the shelf behind you and was immediately hit with a huge flood of nostalgic memories haha
Well done research and presentation-wise, as always!
I’m happy we all have the lost Cavill brother to keep us well informed on the going’s on within the gaming industry.
I ask blunt:
Is she the perverted kind of
Model or the normal kind?
He actually said what they're building is fantastical, not fantastic. Big difference
also "what people THINK we're making" as opposed to "what we ARE making". probably not what he MEANT to say, but equally likely, a huge and accidentally HONEST slip.
That was the tipoff for me. Fantastical means outrageously fake or illusionary. Not many seem to realise he was describing the project honestly.
that dude is bearing his teeth when asking for peoples support and his face is relaxed but he cant hide the stress from showing in his eyes. its that "trust me, you know im good for it" look from a friend or family memeber who thinks they are pulling one over on you again.
I bet there's another hidden page in there called "Master plan"
Where it's just a doodle of two stick figures holding money, and a crowd of other sad stick figures labeled "suckers".
That guy reminds me of a dude I dated once, he's 100% a power tool and seems incredibly manipulative. My bullshit-detector began screeching during the video where he talks about what apparently served as the catalyst for him creating "dream"world
Everything from the little cracking of his voice to the pause=>sigh sounds engineered to create a specific reaction. And when he tries to convince you about how excited he is for the game he sounds like he's trying to roleplay as Shawn Murray (no man's sky). I really don't understand how people fall for something like that, even Jake Paul's apology video sounds more genuine.
Although I have not dated anyone like that, I have met people like this. They are always so easy to identify. Everything about the "project" and its "developers" are obviously sketchy to me.
You dated such a guy... Obviously your "bullshit-detector" doesnt work very well... If your guy was as fake as this guy, you should really work on your "bullshit-detector".

Having published a successful Kickstarter campaign myself, It's my nightmare to ever be grouped into the same category as people like this. As always, great video.
You have caught my attention. I am very much interested in seeing the continuation of this marketer and designer make a videogame -saga.

I honestly believe that, more than scammers, these two guys are narcissists utterly lost in their world of immense self-esteem.
One of the worst feelings (For me.) is finding a bad person with the same name as you. Like, there's almost no reason for me to be embarrassed 'cause I wasn't involved in the situation at all, I still do feel embarrassed about it.

You have the best voice to listen too. Very easy on the ears.
Right??
I agree.
it was weird seeing that voice come out of his face suddenly. First video I've seen where he is on camera instead of just his voice.
Because 'serial entrepreneur of 9 years' inspires so much confidence. It implies a lot of failures and abandoned projects.
I'm gonna be honest, I'm just here for the drama.

Zackary is so good a gaslighter that her ex-fiance still believe he is not trying to scam anyone! My prediction is that they will deliver a botched single-player alpha of the game and put the blame on each others.
They just have to make up some reason as to why everything fell apart and then quietly fade away.
My prediction is they won’t be able to deliver anything
My prediction is they will do like No Man's Sky, but in a way that's malicious from the beginning.
They will create what is essentially a single-player game, if they're even capable of that, and go with "OH LOOK the game is SO BIG AND INFINITE that you will never see two players bump into each other!"
I think her ex fiance thinks he's to dumb to scam people and he really believes he could do it, he's a good actor it seems
That's what emotional manipulation does to people.
I remember when I didn't have to pay for early access to beta test a MMORPG. I miss those days.
I found a lot of interesting little games that way myself over the years ;)
One of the things that can really hurt a small MMO starting out is when they get a huge influx of people when someone covers the game, utterly disrupting the game, causing performance issues and all that - and you can't react to it very fast, and even if you could help with extra hardware and such, there's a good chance you'll never get that money back.
I do hope the gullible people who gave them money have learn a valuable lesson from this.
Josh IMO is doing for MMO’s what Totalbiscuit did for games in general.. we as consumers need to demand better for ourselves.
Someone needs to continue Biscuits legacy. Don't steal the name of his series, that would be disrespectful, but keep the themes and ideas going.

I bet they're gonna just run away with the money , this is how every scam goes : They advertise it , setting up the trap for the foolish people that don't know any better and when they have enough money they either release a crap product ( a video game in this context ) to avoid the law or run away to another country if they're really on the wanted list .
@@PolishJohnWick they wont even bother to release a shitgame, the will make a "devlog" or two and then leave
