Which if so, this would be the weirdest way to do so, so I think that's not the case, but this is the internet, who knows. @@DjVortex-w Probably. I had the same experience, when I tried to tell someone about some studies that proved masks and the booster worked. (Maybe this will also immediately be deleted.)
I've heard that scam emails are intentionally written using bad grammar and several misspellings to weed out all of the people intelligent enough to deduct from that that it's a scam.
It also portrays the scammer as being a vulnerable person with few options but to hurriedly send out a message to the 'only person that can help them' The Mark. There are perfectly written scams out there, but usually they are just the second step in social engineering, by appealing to a shared superiority between peers
The same goes for cults and pseudoscience, the moment you think you're immune to getting sucked into such goofiness is the moment you become vulnerable to it.
@Невада большевик If so, then that fallacy would have a name, can you say which one? (As a scientist I would be under an obligation to remove it) What I am referring to seems pretty consistent with the "Dunning-Kruger effect."
@Невада большевик 1. The Dunning-Kruger effect isn't some rare occurrence. It's an integral part of our personalities that is so pernicious it even has an effect on psychology professors who should know better. In one study psyche professors were asked to rate their teaching ability and that was compared to how students rated them. The worst rated teachers tended to overrate their abilities while the highest rated teachers tended to underrate their abilities. Thus the Dunning-Kruger effect must always be considered in analysis in much the same way you consider the placebo effect. 2. A slippery slope by definition would be invalid, regardless of what people thought. 3. If you cannot name the fallacy or at least construct it's formula, it is better for me to assume there is not one, rather than there is. 4. I'm not sure if you understand my original premise: which is; the more you think you can't get tricked the more likely you can. That seems to me to be quite in line with what is happening during the Dunning-Kruger effect.

What's sad is that Face of Mankind was a great action MMORPG that felt very immersive but devs decide to paywall everything which killed it off. Multiple reboots but they keep doing the same shit.

How can we not trust Josh after what he did to Taquito Bandito?
I wish I was able to articulate the con artist like you did in this video. A few years back, while in college, I had some room mates get sucked into a MLM scheme and I couldn't convince them of its real nature. Young 18-19 y/o kids are surprisingly gullible if they have had nothing but trustworthy adult figures in their lives going through school. Not going to lie I saw it as a very tempting pitch too, but it just felt off and I am almost ashamed to admit I wanted to believe the lie.
Face of Mankind was an amazing free to play game in the very early 2010s and I've never been able to find anything like it since. It all went down hill when they added P2W armour then were Greenlit on Steam which they then made Buy to Play just to shoot themselves in the foot... At the same time they started a Kickstarter where they promised to overhaul the game which never happened after they slipped off into the darkness and shutdown the game like the greedy grifters they were. There's actually a spiritual successor that's still actively receiving updates called "Mankind Reborn" that hopefully could do well if treated properly.
FoM was great in its original incarnation, back in 2006-2007 - I can't say how the early 2010s version was, I never knew it came back, but I have fond memories of running with the Brotherhood of Shadows way back in the old days.
@@Dreznin Had a good start when it relaunched in 2009-2011 with large factions like the FDC and LED easily above 80-100+ players online at any time if I remember correctly. Sadly the games population dropped steadily as people got bored and it limped along with 3-10 active players per faction until it released on steam which gave a huge boost but there was just nothing there to keep players engaged but combat, production, and a cash shop so it quickly dropped again and she shutdown.
It honestly baffles me how in the same story, merely one introductory statement away form each other, the oblivious son of a bollock manages to fit "Today I find that the games are all the same" and "... The goal of the game is to fight the evil creatures to protect the people".
Face of Mankind was an AMAZING game. a fully player-driven world, a true role-playing game with miners and merchants, to miscreants and mercenaries. It really lived up to what that kickstarter paragraph. It was so much fun, I was so hyped for the kickstarter that would bring it back. I must have thrown at least a months pay at it. Then it was funded, but I barely even had time to be hype because like a week or maybe 2 weeks later it was shut down again. The average MMO gamer is gullible, the whales however are extremely gullible, they'll pour thousands of dollars into a dead game just because they can.
Face of Mankind was not a scam, it was actually a very fun MMO that I used to play the shit out of. It was a purely player driven roleplaying game, the only NPCs were some tutorial quest givers and some hostile aliens on one of the planets (I actually started a cult that worshiped the aliens funnily enough). Almost everything in the game was player run, and it was great. And then they fucked it up with this fall of the dominion bollocks. And the claims on that kickstarter page were all true. The problem was that it outlived its appeal and slowly started to die and instead of letting it go out gracefully, the Devs just refused to let it die. A sad end to an amazing game that took up a lot of my childhood. It was a game that did exist, the problem was the devs refusing to let go of something that had seen its prime. A great game that ended up in the hands of a bunch of idiot devs. I am still in touch with a few of the game's community members, Face of Mankind is a massive can of worms.
I've been watching Kickscammer and I have noticed the emotional appeals and tangents for the ones that _absolutely were_ scams that Hanlon's razor didn't apply to.
I dunno why new developers always start with MMOs, besides trying to scam, many others are actually trying to make something but they just get lost. Why MMOs? Why not make a good single player game that is so much easy to develop and to distribution.
@@012egis that might be a niche, then. Because if you look out for successful indie games, at least 80% are single player games. The most famous modern rpgs are not am mmo, right? Skyrim, The Witcher 3. This are AAA games, I know, but they are not online, and are famous anyway. Also you missed the point of my comment. I am not saying to not make a MMO. I am saying that MMO should never be your first project. Get some experience in game development, then you may try something.
@@alissonlares2926 Not only that but there are OTHER genres which are barely getting filled. I mean since Command and Conquer faded into obscurity I'm sure there must be a market for a good Real Time Stratergy game, there's a niche but nobody is filling it atm.
When you poured the space marines out of the mug, and made eye contact with the camera, it was one of the stronger statements I'd ever seen made on a video like this. There's something shockingly unusual about someone saying "This is what I have, and it sounds really weird" and actually showing it, without any weird tactics. Thank you for not abusing our trust and support all these years, Josh.
The take away for me is that "con man" is "confidence man." I never really thought about "con" as "confidence," but as "scam." "To do a scam" and "to do a con" were the same thing to me.
"Confidennce" meaing "a scam" comes from another scam even older than selling the Brooklyn Bridge. Certain Samuel (or William) Thompson (not to be confused with a lot of other notable ppl with the same name) was just strolling around New York chatting up rich guys (he was quite good at appearing as one of their set) then asked them if they have "confidence" to lend him something valuable, then just never talked to his new "friend" again. It didn't work _all that_ often, but it did often enough to prove being rich doesn't make you scam-proof.
When I heard that Josh said his mug was full of Space Marines, I knew it could be true, because I know from other videos on his channel he plays Warhammer 40K.
the age of the scammo's has already been here for at lest the past 7 years it's only been the past 3 years that it has gotten much worse. here is my advice do not invest any game on kickstarter and wait for any games to be released on steam or a platform that garontes some sort of refound policy. this will help to make sure you get your money back and at lest gives you a idea with the rating systems to help you figure out whats a scam and what isn't.
I'm loving how there's some continuity and lore to Josh's videos now. Wondering what's in the mug, Taquito's bad opinions, comparing games to Dreamworld...
9:39 Actually, its a sequel to "The Fourth /Comming/". That's probably how it avoided being found by the actual copyright holders. It's a con disguised as a typo.

If you are renting, or leasing, or own an office space you should have eliminated that expense or sold it for more capitol. It's not a matter how much money it is comperatively. At one point, we had known exploiters given a free pass because they had RUclips channels; the exposure was worth it. Yeah, it was, an experience.
There are outright scams and there are cases where the devs aren't smart enough to know what they can and cannot accomplish. What about sustainability? How long does an MMO need to last to be considered legitimate? If an MMO never releases with many of the promised features then we can call it a scam or incompetent failure. But what if the devs release an MMO and support it for one full year before abandoning it because players aren't giving them enough money to pay the bills, is it considered legitimate? I'm sure there are many MMOs that are being or have been developed that don't have a sufficiently large player base to make them viable businesses over time. Does that make them a cash grab/scam, or is it other behavior by the devs that needs to be considered?
A defendant's character has to be established in a court of law. Which means smilin Aislinn will probably be called in to testify if or when court time comes. She doesn't deserve this crap. So yeah, other behaviour has to be considered. If Zachary and Garrison came out right now and admitted defeat, they might actually be able to win their case. But the longer this goes on, the more suspicious it becomes.

Space Marines In Cup Thoughts. When you said, "there are spacemarines" I was like "Live ones? Surely not.", but then I thought back and remembered that you probably do have a collection of miniatures at least, and they could fit into the cup. It's plausible. I wouldn't have put any money on it, I wasn't too surprised when you showed them, but I did smile. I would declare that I like to think critically when it comes to absurd claims, but I definitely have moments where I'm sleepy or bored or just sad, and those are the moments when I don't. And, there are absolutely vulnerabilities you can exploit in me if you know what they are. I'm still working on getting better at patching those up though.
What an absolute shame it was, it wasn't outright drama bomb issues but... Buy to play and with a far too optimistically high price tag for the niche appeal/basic low grade graphics and assets... I'm sorry but when you're marketing a game where you have to level your death skill by finding new ways to die and have to grind cheesemaking. You have a curious demographic who might get it on a whim who are warded off by your near full price tag, and you have die hards who are used to being burned who see the smash and grab potential of the price and don't bother either. The flip floppy takes on the approach to the game development and moderation. IE: There are sexual contents/drug uses/hard language/prejudices present in NPC dialog and handling, but even jokingly being prejudiced against DEER (Yes, deer. As in the hoofy bleaty animal. And yes this far far predated the twitch drama) bore you a ban, and sometimes casual cursing such as "I'm sick of these GD spawns" would net you a moderator action. Inconsistent enforcement VS The actual game world as it stood even in character or roleplay. The utterly alienating approach to the playerbase, handling them past 3 layers of disconnect through CMs and Moderators and never ever addressing anything proper on the developer side. The "Hardcore but not" nature that couldn't decide if it were a free form sandbox or not, IE: You can get permanently cursed losing to a boss which makes your chances of defeating the boss or anything else much lower depending on the curse until you defeat the boss... But finding people after the community built in beta was sundered was a nigh impossibility.
I played Face of Mankind a lot back in the day. That game had so many issues even before the kickstarter to try to revive it. At least Neocron 2 died more gracefully. I do kiss that game tho, you can still play it, but it is super dated now.
I've worked as an intern at a few startups. The explanation at 15:00 is actually pretty common and accurate. Venture capitol is more likely to invest if you have a successful kickstarter regardless of its goals. My first internship had a kickstarter that was only asking foe enough to backpay the work done so far and the rest would be funded though outside investments. Unfortunately, by that point there had been dozens of people working for over a year, and the kickstarter didn't raise more than a thousand dollars. The CEO was genuinely expecting hundreds of thousands. He had stretch goals planned through 8 million. The lesson being some people really are this stupid.
The funny part is that there are successful RPG games being made with a budget of under 100k USD. Consider Queen's Wish for example. That alone should give you a base line of the funding necessary as multiplayer just adds a lot more complexity, so an order of magnitude more money is certainly realistic.
I actually spent 60 dollars or so on Pantheon and that's like... 5 years ago. I don't know how to even track whether I will get the rewards I signed up for any more, and I have no idea how I could find time to play it... I was lonely, and now I'm too busy, instead. It does kinda look like they have made a lot of stuff so maybe it'll eventually launch??
Whenever I talk about stuff or debate people, I'm well aware that many people aren't going to believe some rando on the internet like me. So I tell them how to see it for themselves so they don't have to believe me. But many people won't even do that. The truth is, many people believe what they believe and it is next to impossible to change minds until they learn the hard way. The only people who will agree with you are the people who knew it before they heard you. So nobody's mind is changed. Sometimes the result could be a scam, but it could also mean death - it depends on the case. And you can't learn the hard way after death, because you're dead.
Okay but the quiet 'Space marines...' while pouring them out of a mug just kind of killed me. I am dead now. This was a satisfying end, thank you very much.
It's not an MMO but I can't watch a video about Kickstarter scams without an obligatory shoutout to Project Phoenix. Game raised over $1m back in 2013 and has released...absolutely nothing. Not even a bad game, just nothing. There is also quite literally no reason to believe anyone is even working on it anymore either. Last update to their Kickstarter page is over 2 years old at this point and you have to go *way* further back than that to find a single update with any actual substance to it. They took $1m and ran. And they've completely gotten away with it too.

The take away for me is that "con man" is "confidence man."
I never really thought about "con" as "confidence," but as "scam." "To do a scam" and "to do a con" were the same thing to me.
It didn't work _all that_ often, but it did often enough to prove being rich doesn't make you scam-proof.
you're also correct, confidence man was shortened to con man, then con became synonyms with scam

Yeah, it was, an experience.
I love watching your videos! I can't believe there's other MMOs being made, especially scammy ones...
So with that sign I'm going to guess that Taquito Bandito didn't apologize?

I need to see Project Gorgon on your Worst MMO series. I have such mixed feelings about it. I'd love to see what you think.
But finding people after the community built in beta was sundered was a nigh impossibility.
was just thinking that, imo it has some cool concepts but... its a bit off
I played Face of Mankind a lot back in the day. That game had so many issues even before the kickstarter to try to revive it. At least Neocron 2 died more gracefully. I do kiss that game tho, you can still play it, but it is super dated now.
I never doubted, not for a second, that you ACTUALY had space marines in that mug. I knew you gonna pop em up in the end.
Very poignant, even beyond the world of MMOs. Everyone needs to hear something like this at least once in their life.
My manhood can barely handle this handsome man and his buttersmooth voice
What
I actually spent 60 dollars or so on Pantheon and that's like... 5 years ago. I don't know how to even track whether I will get the rewards I signed up for any more, and I have no idea how I could find time to play it... I was lonely, and now I'm too busy, instead.
It does kinda look like they have made a lot of stuff so maybe it'll eventually launch??
The Space Marines in the mug was an excellent touch. Bravo, sir.
Josh has proven we can trust him. Lets toss all our cash at him to make an MMO!
I've never had someone so accurately describe how I do my job every day at work as when Josh was telling me what a con man was.
Retail?
I hit like when you poured out the space marines. Josh, my man, I love your content
