The Gen 3 is just about perfect. Fuel injection helps on the high altitude bits and has a gas tank to get you through some of the longest sections of many of the BDRs between fuel stops. The biggest drawback is the weight. Picking it up on any normal day is easy but when you have been riding for days and are really tired it can be a real struggle.
Cool Video, I have a Gen 3 KLR & want to do the NMBDR, any issues with the KLR that you would describe as a negative to the NMBDR?

I use the Rever app on my phone. Downloaded the area so I can use it offline and it worked flawlessly. The app has all the BDR routes.
