I bought a cheap ADV bike to get out and explore! I rode the NMBDR last May and now I’m hooked. Ride along while I get ready for AZ in April!
KLR 650 - All Mods - A BDR Build
Here are all the mods I have installed over the last year since running the NMBDR. I filmed this in April before leaving for AZ but am just now getting around to editing. Stay tuned for AZBDR videos!

Moto Camping on my KLR 650

As I prepare to ride the Arizona BDR in late April, I decided to take a quick overnight moto camping trip to test out some new gear. After adding pannier racks and luggage I needed to upgrade the spring to handle the extra weight. A 2 hour run out to one of the best spots in Central Texas is the perfect shakedown.

I bought my old KLR in February 2023 and with only a single day of off-rode experience, I decided to go and ride as much of the NMBDR as I could handle! I had not planned on recording my ride but at the last minute an old friend loaned me his Insta360 cam and said have fun. I apologize for the super dark windscreen blocking the view and for all the wind noise but I didnt have an external mic. D...

Its a KLR thing!

I bought an old KLR 650 about 10 months ago and have loved every mile! Here are some ramblings about why.
The KLR is the most adequate bike ever made. It does everything just well. It is one of my favorite bikes and truly is the tractor of the bike world. You can never go wrong with a KLR.
For touring long distance what, are you running? Im thinking of going with the Corbin
Hello Can you list the camping gears 😊
New 2023 KLR owner and this is a great video for new owners/riders. I haven’t added anything to my KLR, still rocking the plastic OEM boxes. I have the tusk foot pegs and the shifter to install. Thank you for posting.
How about the Corbin it looks really nice.
Sold my 2nd gen a while back and missed it, was thinking of a new klr next spring start of Canadian riding season but dang I enjoyed modding the 2010 so it fit me like a glove 👍
Thank you for this review. Very helpful. I kept hearing the stock KLR seat is quite comfortable compared to other adventure bikes. I suppose nothing can compare with aftermarket options though!
Just bought an 09KLR for the same reasons you stated after doing my research. Enjoy and ride safe!
Tractionator desert on my 22 adventure
Good luck on your AZ. BDR, I have been wanting to do the NM BDR as well, I have a stock Gen 3 KLR. At 65 years old I'm not sure I will do the whole NM BDR but I will for sure go play some. Thanks for the nice tips.
Is…the stock seat. You want a bagger or Gold Wing, get one. You got a KLR-ride it. The seat money you don’t waste will pay for gas on a lot of adventures. Just sayin; these folks are all tryin to sell you stuff you don’t need
Why would you want to ride something that was uncomfortable? Investing in good contact points make a world of difference.
👍👍
WOW nice to see old school maintenance.
That’s a great looking KLR
did you have to get a longer choke cable when you did the bars and risers?
I didn’t change any of the cables for that but there were some generic non-adjustable risers and stock bars on it when I bought it so the previous owner might have. I ended up changing the clutch cable as the original one was a bit of a hard pull.
Great video! I just rode the Giant Loop Ride, and a Motoz vendor was promoting this same tire combo, so I'm very interested to learn your impression on trail and pave. Thx!
Off road: I was more than happy with the performance. The rear has plenty of bite and lateral traction so it always felt planted on hard pack, dirt, and mud. Gravel would give you the typical shimmy at speed but very minor and quickly corrects. The front was also very good but you will need to air down a bit (something I rarely do cuz I’m lazy) if it’s rocky at all or it’s gonna bounce the front all over the place. Once I figured that out I had no complaints in the dirty stuff. On road: The rear feels just as good as any 50/50 tire all the way up to hwy speed. It’s a little noisy but really any knobby is and I’m fine with that. The front tire is absolutely terrifying when you first put it on and that doesn’t get much better after being scuffed in. Anything over about 55 and you will get random wobbles. I’ve always been able to modulate the throttle to slow those down in the past but it seemed like no matter what I did I couldn’t shake the pucker factor. They grab rain grooves and tar snakes like just about any knobby tire. I wanted all the off road traction I could get but that really made the pavement riding pretty brutal. Overall I love the rear and will likely go with something less aggressive in the front next time. Totally just my opinion tho as I know people rave about these tires.
Nice job, what are you going to do with the old tires?
Hanging on to them for now as they are great on the street.
Cool Video, I have a Gen 3 KLR & want to do the NMBDR, any issues with the KLR that you would describe as a negative to the NMBDR?
The Gen 3 is just about perfect. Fuel injection helps on the high altitude bits and has a gas tank to get you through some of the longest sections of many of the BDRs between fuel stops. The biggest drawback is the weight. Picking it up on any normal day is easy but when you have been riding for days and are really tired it can be a real struggle.
You lost me when you hammered the axle out metal to metal. Get a rubber mallet or use a block of wood so you dont damage that first thread.
Very helpful review! Thank you for sharing!
The KLR 650 is the only bike I've owned twice.
What year?
Seat choice is highly subjective. That being said, I've never found my stock '08 KLR650 seat uncomfortable on a day-to-day basis. However, the cheapo version of the Maddog pad helps on those multi-thousand-mile rides.
I've been riding my KLR for a couple of years now and I totally agree with you. I do have other street motorcycles but I have started to get into trail and BDR style riding so I bought the KLR and have found that it has all the features you need to make it across the mapped trails and the Interstate highway it took to get there. It's rugged, reliable, expendable but unkillable. There are tons on the secondhand market and the aftermarket is expansive.
I too was inspired by Itchy boots but I bought the Himalayan. After three years I traded it for a KLR. There is nothing wrong with a Himalayan. It is great for gravel and trails but in North America we have to deal with a lot of pavement. The KLR is much better for this.
Great presentation sir. I am now a subscriber. I own 3 Gen3 KLR650's. They all sport the Seat Concepts Commuter Low touring seat. I have several single day 200+ mile rides, a 317, 453 and 551 miler rides. For me this seat does the job. Thank u sir.

I did the exact same thing. 09 klr and I'm having a blast. Having fun fixing it up and adding technology. Perfect mix of capability, versatility, and longevity. Also in texas. Using OsMand to load up gpx files from klr groups and adv groups.
Enjoy it!
I've got the seat concepts comfort xl and I've only put 100 or so miles on it but I was wondering if there was a break in period for you and if so how many miles was it? Out of the box it's better than stock but still somewhat stiff.
Definitely stiff out of the box but gave me an extra couple hours before my undercarriage started getting sore. I’m at just under 1000 miles and feels like its starting to break in or at least it’s not as noticeable. Totally eliminated the pressure points tho so I’m a happy rider 🤘
KLR brakes have always scared me. You have to plan out stopping so you stop. This is an upgrade I'm planning on doing. Thanks for the video.
Night and day difference! Pair it with front springs and it’s like a whole new bike!
Great Job! You've got the rythem of the video down...New Sub enjoyed it.
Awesome, thank you! 🤘
I’ve owned 2, they are fantastic, a tough machine, enjoy!
KLRs- made to ride into town to get KTM and BMW parts
😂
Which section was this?
Section 1 and part of section 2 up to Cloudcroft
@@ShiftyMoto nice! I want to do a section . What maps or device did you use? I'm super new to this.
I use the Rever app on my phone. Downloaded the area so I can use it offline and it worked flawlessly. The app has all the BDR routes.
@@ShiftyMoto thanks brother! I'll look into.. ride safe 🤠
got to ask, a few of us want to buy the 2024 KLR's the shops in Florida are charging way over price on these bikes, so, no one's buying them. ( I just got a price out the door of 11,800. for an adventure model) N FK WAY !!!!, they want 1399.00 for delivery and 400 set up fee. A NO !!!!!, where willing to buy them, in other states, who's got the best price. drop a link please.
The 2023 I bought back in July had a $1300 rebate…..
Keep safe always Sir..143rd subscribers here from Philippines...i wish to have 1 also from you Sir
That KLR a 2011 model? Great looking set up
Yep 2011 👍
I've got the same yr@@ShiftyMoto

Three changes of shoes in one video for an overnight trip? Nice glamping. hehe. Seriously, 80 pounds of gear?
😂😂😂
Twenty-eight motorcycles and three KLR’s. Currently have a j2023 KLRs and like it more than my 2004 & 2008 models. Though I did like the 2004. I’m older now and like the lower S.
Use the exact same luggage on my AfricaTwin. Great bags for the dollar! 👍
Where in Texas is the campsite? Looks great.
I like the Gen2 dashboard better than my Gen3 one. Love my 23 Adventure, though.
I had an 04 model with the little box speedo tach combo. I think that the last gen carburetted models have the best instrumentation. The new injected models are nice, but the tachless digital unit is soulless.
🤘
Aloha I was thinking of moving out to Wichita falls Texas from Hawaii, to get a new start just me and my KLR 650. Our home burned down during the wildfires here on Maui. Keep Texas Texas! Pls.
I have the exact same bags, I've had them for about 4 years, they're fantastic. I live the desert and what I noticed is there's no fading from the sunlight, no tearing of the material from the ultraviolet light. previously I had the Nelson-Riggs waterproof bags but after only a year the bags in spite of the very thick material tore very easily from sunlight exposure. the desert is very harsh and the Olympus bags still look new today. you might like the Wolfman Tank Pannier Base, the klr has a giant tank and I installed 8 liter Tusk bags on each side of the tank, plenty of knee room and for small and lite camping items it works great.
Question for ya! How did your bike handle the sand with the extra weight up front using that setup? Any extra brake dive or plowing?
@@ShiftyMoto for the Tank Pannier Base there's hardly any weight at all, for the 8 liter Tusk bags it really depends on what you stuff them with, the Pannier Base will accommodate really anything (bags or whatever) you strap to them, as you are aware space is also a problem. my suspension was shot when I bought the bike, everything leaked, I had it all rebuilt, I used Progressive springs on the front and a RaceTech spring on the rear, if I could do it again I'd used RaceTech for everything, the Progressive springs are too soft for the sand, some dipping on braking which affects control. my bike is a 1999, when I bought the bike it had PD (Paris Dakar) Nerf Bars from Happy Trails already installed, solid steel and they're real real heavy, that adds significant weight to the front end, but they're real nice (and expensive). when I bought the bike it seemed lighter, but now I'm 67 and it's not so lite so as I write I'm having a sidecar fabricated, should be ready next week! I'm opting for an Ural looking system but only a cage, no passenger, but the sidecar wheel will match the 17" rear Kawasaki wheel with both a front and rear spare tires, everything is switchable- I have a lot of gear.
@@ShiftyMoto I forgot, the Wolfman Pannier Base seems to be being discontinued and they're selling it for $50!, you can't lose.
Nice shake-down run! New subscriber here, off to checkout the other content you've got
The lone camper with his trusty KLR is never alone. Now if they could just learn it to make coffee on those cold mornings, the world would be perfect. 😋
Stanley makes a French Press that doubles as a pot. It works great.

Great bike.. I have a 2008 . its not fast but then who really cares? it gets me where I need to go without problems.
Right! It’s all about smiles per gallon.
