an altercation between a teacher and a student, allegedly at Glenvista
High School, went viral. Naptosa's Basil Manuel says this shows a breakdown of discipline in schools.

Having being one myself, I know that Student disrespect towards teachers is a serious issue. While teachers and students both have a role to play in fostering a respectful classroom environment, parents have a critical responsibility in teaching their children respect for educators.
I can only but imagine the level of patience an educator needs to have when dealing with bad kids.
I think the teacher most likely reached a breaking point. This class may have had behaviourial issues over a very long time . Admin most likely knew and just wished the problem would go away.Im guessing the student prevoked and poked.
I once heard a teacher say grade 9s are the worst disciplined on average
Typical teenagers ruled by their weird hormones. Some of them are rude to their parents. Dealing with them you need to understand their psyche
I remember at a high school soccer match one of the players was making disrespectful comments and giving the ref (who was a teacher) a hard time. The ref kept his cool. Right after the match the boy`s father wipped his @ss with a belt in the field in front of all.. "kwedin, you disgrace me and your mother acting like we failed to teach you respect".
Usually the teacher reports this several times to the grade manager and they don't do enough to discipline the child they get off easy, then it gets taken to the principal and he/she has no effective strategy to deal with the child. They are back in class the next day and they go in provoking the teacher
This starts at home, no discipline and no disrespect!!
Problem starts at home. Not the school’s responsibility to teach children the basics re respect, behaviour, boundaries. Too many parents use the excuse that life has changed - single parents …. Both are working …… life is hard….. well, I call BS on it all. I look at my family and friends around me who are extremely successful, humble and kind who grew up in the 60’s & 70”s. Single parents, who worked multiple jobs, no money - times were hard. We all had chores, we got into deep poopoo if our homework was not done, we sat detention at school and this was backed by our parents. What did all this teach us - to be functional hardworking adults who take care and are accountable for our actions.
Because disciplining rights were taken away from parents and teachers therefore these kids are growing up into criminals!. We were disciplined with a cane in school and therefore we all from that era are proud citizens today
Straight talk
i dont agree for example if your kid is being bullied at school and started defending himself is that also the problem at home or if the teacher teach in her mother tong and not in eng or afr is the problem also a home problem even after the head master disputed this. only after i gave my cell to my kid where he recorded this happening and the responce from the school was why your child had a phone and not why the teacher was teaching in another lanquage. this is but 2 examples
This madala has not answered yhe question. What happens to a child who's a hooligan?
I guess the hooligan child is overlooked as a saint!! Just like how criminals have more rights out there than yourself!
in south africa it does not work the same. there is many reasons for this. racism, bullies teachers not doing their jobs and and and
Parents need to be reinstated as the true government within the family structure,...get politics out of the home...and out of the school....
it will never happen
That is not a learner;the dept of education should analyse the meaning of a learner. He must be expelled and be put into adult education which is FET
the teacher should be banned from teaching. if he had a problem he should have used the correct channel
Something is wrong somewhere
Something is wrong at home, where these kids are raised...
The government allowed this nonsense.
Something is wrong in the upbringing of these kids!!!! Nothing else.
Learners should respect the teachers, discipline and respect begins at home. The teachers has alot to deal with,it us easy said than done put yourself in the teachers shoes.
The teacher did well by fighting back
😂😂😂😂
And he must not loose his job
if a teacher should hit my child he will learn the hard way by dealing with me. if you cant take the heat then get out of the kitchen
I hope the learners are expelled
Imagine me having to take a step back when a learner is rude and being a hooligan in class while im trying to teach😢 I'm also a parent to my kids how the hell must i deal with such trauma. This government really need to come to the table to deal with such because they started it all. Imagine the learner has the right to education. Isn't it enough that the child dont want to be a child but want to be an adult. Lord, have mercy on teachers if feel for them.
they are killing the nation this govt I swear
personally my feeling towards teachers is not of the best. some of them is bullies and are using their power as a teacher to bully a child or children
I understand it. That was me in 2003. I taught gr8&9 in the east rand. There was no discipline allowed then. The teacher is alone with 35-75 kids in class. They broke a lab desk. No tks. I have been teaching abroad now for 21 years..I dont miss this.
We all know that this man will lose his job. It's a done deal. This boy will be given the benefit of the doubt and he will face the reality of becoming just another statistic down the line. Curriculum 2005 and the government's failed educational policies are to blame. Rights are not absolute.
Grade 9s and 10s are the most problematic! No discipline there!
Where’s the video
What is this man saying 😡😡😡😡😡
I feel sorry for the teachers of South Africa, no one will stand for them if this kids they fight with them, minister of education where are you 😢😢
the teachers of today in south africa in general are lacking skills
That’s what happens when the FATHER is absent in the home
THATS GENERALISATION. MANY OF THESE CHILDREN HAVE AFTHERS AT HOME. AMNY SINGLE PARENT CHILDREN DO WELL IN LIFE.
Not really many kids out there they've grown up by single parents. The truth is that our kids they don't respect at all, gone are the days where we respect any adults.
But the teacher is being telling his/her superior and no action.
The child of the parent must stand for the truth. Parents know their kids
Take them to stout school if they still exist in SA our kids they are out of hand. God intervine in our kids lives
I know exactly what transpired, no need for intense investigation!! If you were in the teachers position you would never be able to hold back any humiliation and violent threats made to you by that pupil. So let's do the right thing and STAND UP AND SUPPORT THIS TEACHER IN ANYWAY 🙏
I'm with
from my experience the teacher is not always the innocent party
It's the direct result of lack of discipline of the child. Child must learn the easy way or the hard way the your parents and family will accept their unruly behaviour but don't expect other people to tolerate it.... Nice wake up call.. Kids are like hooligans now days..Am truly sorry for teachers now days. They have such a hard time. Schools, the department of education, SGBs don't care about teachers and encourage teachers to continually accept the abuse. HATS OFF TO THE TEACHER FOR STANDING UP FOR HIMSELF!!
Make him minister of day care discipline
Why would anyone want to be a teacher in this country in this day and age. Leave the youth to thrive without education 😂
this is what happen when a teacher want students to fear him i have never had that a friendly teacher fought with a student only those who act like animals get things like that... Students get fed up by being bullied and if the child was wrong the other students would have back up him by holding the fellow student
Yesterday I had a student showing his hand as a gun to me and acted as if he shot me in the chest, just because I requested him to please go to class and stop walking around. How fair is that, I just walked away thinking by myself why am I still a teacher. It does not even help to report it because expulsion for 1 or 2 days does not change these type of learners behaviour. My concern is when will this child maybe bring a real gun to school and really shoot someone. What then? Because then it is to late. Learners must get more chances every time after incidents. We must just accept that and teach them again. The system is failig teachers and learners that really want to learn and teach. 😢
There is no one who would risk their job easily, that student must have done something
go to sarel cilliers in koppes then we talk again
This is the reason why i did homeschooling, didn't need to see all that drama lol
This is a mirror of what is happening at home,I mean the conversations are not respectful, and bad behavior is a joke.Suspend that student for six months, no stupid step back, should the teacher do,the footage is evidence enough.
realsassa i agree with you
If you go on RUclips there's 5 different videos , different years different incidences ...
Clearly that school needs help😊
Could it be that the teachers are the problem themselves? I'm not saying children should fight teachers but how much can a student take from a teacher until they also can't take it anymore?
@@Ayo_its_Austin can't take what ... they don't respect authority because they don't respect their own guardians or parents
Clearly the pupils need help
Very Pertinent point raised Basil, "do not escalate "any issue or circumstance ,presenting itself. Yes definitely the adult is blamed , even though the pupil is the culprit, instigating an incident.
Schools management has a tough task at hand , how a decision to be taken , for the rights of a child to educated, must not be infringed.
The rights of a child to be educated when the child is doing his very worst to infringe on the rights of the 30 other learners to be educated?
It's very easy to say don't escalate if you have never been in that situation before.
As a teacher I was threatened with violence and left the school for my own sanity.
The school management does absolutely nothing about it. You are on your own.
in the past the childrem came first today the teacher comes first. if had first hand as a parent where teachers provoke and intimidated children in the school. the genaral feeling towards teachers was earned. it is shocking what they do to our children and still getting away with it.
it does not always starts at home its easy to blame the parents but not always the trouth. the problem can also start at school and then flow over into the household. both parties school and household could be to blame
I'm sorry Parents should be called in immediately and Child or Children removed from School.Educators deal with enough disrespect from pupils Unacceptable there's never been respect to Educators.
Turns out glen vista has a history of this. Check another vid from 10 yrs ago. Same school
How do you de escalate an issue when a student forces his way on a teacher to show his peers who is boss. No respect to any adults from the young people. Many teachers have left because of this very fact of ill disciplne.
A police charge should be laid.
Once this respect is lost and forcing a right to educate a rebelous pupil is in my opinion to be harshly dealt with.
It would appear you manuel are siding with a lost cause until it happens to you personally.of course people need to be educated as you say, it is such a pity though that some would rather play up to victim than become educated.
This happens at many schools not only high schools. How is discipline controlled if some dont want it.😊
The teacher is an adult and he should as well respect his profession
Really?is that how far you can go?
Sounds like a one sided viewpoint to me. I suppose the teacher being an adult caused the fight, and the student is the innocent victim with rights, right?
Go teach and then we will talk
Eishhhh
