    I was only seventeen
I fell in love with a gypsy queen
    She told me "hold on"
Her father was the leading man
Said "you're not welcome on our land"
And then as a foe, he told me to go
He took me to a little shack
And put a whip across my back
    Then told her "leave me"
I was out for quite a time
Came back with her on my mind
    Sweet little girl
    She means all the world
    Ah
Oh, I want my gypsy queen
Will she still be torn between
    Her father and lover
One day I will go to him
Strong enough to fight and win
    The kind of a man
    That he'll understand

I must say Gypsy's riff was so memorable for me that it's really brought me to heavy rock sound when I was about 7 in early 70s. Way before AC/DC..The other was Purple's Smoke on the Water.
My much older cousins played it and it caught me. I didn't play instrument then so I just hummed it a lot especially when doing something..😅

There was a radio station called Szabad Europa in Germany, and a dissident Hungarian hosted the Sunday afternoon program. I heard the first Uriah Heep songs there! A love that continues to this day, because they not only wrote simple songs ahead of their time, but also composed pieces, e.g. Salisbury! Well, the point is that my first two recordings of Uriah from the "Géza Ekecs" program/German radio/ were Gypsy and Come Away Melinda on a cassette tape recorder with a microphone! Here it was decided, and I started bringing the LPs to Hungary in 1972-73

I've recently started exploring Uriah Heep and a lot of the songs I've listened to sound very familiar like stuff I would have heard my dad listening to when I was a kid.

I’ve learned Uriah Heep since the 70’s and until now they are incomparable in style of rock music. One of the heavy legends, their music sounds remain great.👍👍👍

Can hear where Judas Priest got some of the inspiration for victim of changes in parts of this song. Some of the riffing also reminds me of wild thing, albeit heavier.

🗣 This was the first original album, which I bought from an acquaintance of my friend. At that time, in the early 70s, records were ordered from *London*

    Lyrics:
    I was only seventeen
I fell in love with a gypsy queen
    She told me, hold on!
Her father was the leading man
Said "You're not welcome on our land"
And then as a foe, he told me to go
He took me to a little shack
And put a whip across my back
    Then told her, leave me
I was out for quite a time
Came back with her on my mind
Sweet little girl, she means all the world
Though I want my gypsy queen
Will she still be torn between
    Her father and lover?
One day I will go to him
Strong enough to fight and win
The kind of a man, that he'll understand
