- "If you keep your head and your ass in the same place, that'll happen on its own," says Jason Isbell on how he gets the most out of his live performances. On the heels of a new HBO documentary, he and Cory sit down for a deep discussion, talking creating genuine art that can also turn into hits, Muscle Shoals, and the intersection between "guitarist" and "songwriter"-as well as "for life" gear choices.

Appreciate the interview guys!
I bought a copy of an album Jason did years ago... the music wasnt what I'd normally listen to, but two songs in and I was thinking (lyrically)... "hmmm.... thats good.... I like that....", four songs in it was like "..... f'in hell, thats clever. I really like that....." and by the time I was 8-9 tracks in, it was "..... f's sake, thats brilliant. How did I not know about this?"
He's a damn good writer. I like his lyrical style a lot.
Good advice!
I want to get creative at writing songs but just for me at home. I play the guitar and sing a little and have some descriptive hand writing skills. Playing the guitar and writing can be very soothing for me. What are good practices to help facilitate that?? And do you write and play at the same time? And if you don’t which one do you normally mess around with first? Chord progressions etc. or words on paper?
If I had to say what the secret is, it's that you are not trying to make something happen. Songs are not created they are received. Put yourself in the position to receive them and they will come. Failing that, keep listening and learning and remember that it's original because you're doing it and if GCD was good enough for Bob Dylan it's good enough for you
@@bernarddoherty2303 Thank you?? I think??
The video said there was no “one” thing that was tied to writing success and I completely get that, and have that same outlook on most things in life.
I have no primary ambition or motivation other than the desire to learn for my own private and personal wellbeing. I’m not necessarily seeking inspiration to be “good” as much as maybe a template to just “be”. I am drawn more to the craft of songwriting than I am the ability to write a song.
Your answer might still be same as it was before. And maybe there are no beginner templates or basic guidelines in songwriting. I don’t know. Hopefully i did better this time at explaining myself. Thank you.
@@bernarddoherty2303 Yep. Yep yep and yep. Never try and force it. It took me 30 years to learn that, but its absolutely true.
Well my biggest hurdle starting out was fear. It sounds to me like you're looking for a step by step guide on how to write a song?
It's funny cuz you're a doctor right? So you decided to become a doctor one day so you worked at it for years and eventually you got enough education
@@bernarddoherty2303 But…not to sit at home and play Dr on myself. Which is why I want to write and play for myself, and myself only. When it’s terrible, I won’t know or care… but my anxiety and blood pressure will like it. It is for my eyes only, nobody else’s.
Watching this video is what inspired me to ask the question to begin with. The video concluded reinforcing my worldview free of shortcuts, tricks, and secrets.
I will NOT be at the Bluebird all night, or Coco’s till 3 AM?? 🤣🤣 I’m not working with that level of commitment nor can I acquire that level of commitment. Great places in their own right. Correction….legendary places…
See ya. Have a great night.
how about smile.......................
