      Dang. I just had a friend make me a Probably Whiskey sticker with her vinyl cutter. I have been loving your channel. I stumbled across it a couple of weeks ago and I tip my Jameson glass to you, Sir. I now want to burn everything in sight. I have even resurrected a wooden stool that had been sitting on my back porch for two years using this method. Cleanse it with fire! Anywho.... Thanks for the goofy dad approach. The dyes are water based, so if you are using a water based top coat, it will definitely pull some up into the brush. Another option would be to use a spray finish to put a 1st coat on, then use a brush for the following ones. I just did that to some crosses I did, that I applied a water based whitewash too.

      Normally I'm not too concerned if it pulls a little of the dye. But I did receive a question about if you had a multicolored piece. And I have done a spray coat first too!

    I just finished up a big job burning and dyeing 17 tables red. I sanded them to 220 first before burning and when they were done they had a metallic like finish. I couldn’t tell from the video if your non sanded boards looked like that as well. Also, to help reduce cupping and twist I burnt the bottom of the tables as well, not as deep though.

  • @holyfunions

    Red dye for sure, but that’s a preference thing. I think the wood accepts the red dye best and it’s the least blotchy. One question on that Halcyon varnish; when it’s totally cured on that pine, can you dent it with your fingernail? I’ve been using wipe-on poly to get away from the stink of lacquer but it’s still not as durable as I’d like it to be, even after multiple coats and plenty of cure time. Thanks in advance!

    2 Questions: You mentioned "spraying" the wood while you burn it to prevent cupping/warping. What do you mean by spraying it (with what)? Also, the bristle drill bit you used to scrape out the char... what brand is that one? it looks like it has 1"-2" of surface coverage. The one I have is very narrow (maybe 1/2"), so it takes ages to sand down my boards. Thanks for the great video!

    Trying to find this Folk Art dye...all links lead to out of stocks on Amazon. And this stuff is expensive! I'm finding 8 oz cans from other retailers for prices ranging from $14.12 - $34.10. Such a price range for the same amount....8 oz! I love the stuff but it's four times the price as Varathane tintable base. Do you dilute the dye at all? That would certainly make it go farther and justify the higher price

  • @nyxpenn6015
    @nyxpenn6015 3 года назад

    I have two questions. First, do you ever sand after the dye to flatten the grain that lifted from staining and how does it look? Second, I don't know where you are from but, I was wondering how the boat varnish you use would hold up in 100 degrees direct sunlight in the desert? Alot I have tried don't do well in the desert.

    • @BuildDadBuild
      @BuildDadBuild  3 года назад

      I don't sand after the dye because I want the texture.
      I live in Houston. Like the desert only with 100% humidity! LOL
      It holds up better than most other products. However, in order to get good UV resistance you need 6-7 coats. The good part is that's totally doable in a day because you only need an hour between coats.

    Found this when looking for a way to give my new desk some vibrance and depth. I try not to buy tools if I'm just using them for one project, especially more specialized ones. Are you aware of any attachments or add-ons that can make a regular propane torch a little more suited to burning large surfaces?

    What’s up Nick. All the colors came out great. It’s weird that when you use the blue dye it turns purple but when I’ve tried the blue I got the nice blue color. I think it might be the burning that might cause that, it completely sure but it’s strange.
