Sun bleach is by far my favorite stains I like to leave it on for 5-7 mins. The. Wipe less or more aggressively to change its appearance. It’s like a chameleon 🦎
Today I am going to finish my brother-in-law's porch and I am going to make it gray with stain paint and a hybrid of acrylics mixed with metallic gray, thanks to your contributions I have a plan.😊
I just started working with shou shugiban and I don’t subscribe to anyone but this is the second video I’ve watched of yours and your video style is awesome and I did subscribe. Nice job.
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun ! But mama ! That’s where the fun isssssss ! 🤣. I thought of that line when you said not to look there cuz it was too bright . Love that song 🤣
Just want to let you know I did my first burn and painted with chalk paint it was amazing I don’t think I will use stain again it gives it a nice texture. Thanks for you vids!
How do ya get so much black instead of brown in the grain ? I do the same technique and use the restorer . But my grain is always brown. I need help fast ! Have a project needing done by the end of the day. Thank you 😊
Hey Nick, I did some experimenting with white's and lighter greys. I used water based latex not thinned. Brush it on your shou sugi ban then take a squeege, rubber sanding block, strong foam or whatever you have and try it out. Do it right after you put the paint on. If you f#@k up just take your brush and re-apply. So swipe your rubber block maybe a foot then wipe the block off and repeat. Cheers
Hey I don't know if you've already answered this, but how much material does burning and then brushing take off of the wood? I'm making an American flag where the red stripes are burnt, and each stripe is about 3 quarters of an inch, and if I lose too much material I'm afraid the stripes will be too small. Should I just partially burn them instead? Thanks
I just finished my first Shou sugi ban project because of you - thank you for the inspiration! Also just picked up some red Unicorn Spit I can’t wait to use it on the outdoor chair I’m making next
That white wash though amazing. And I just got my coffee mug today. I cant wait to get home and pour something in it. Probably whisky 😉 . Any one thats thinking about buying your own.....Do it. Very easy and fast it took them 2 days to get it to my house.
Perfect timing. Just starting to work on wainscoting. What tried that also looks good is mixing tremclad black with white till I get the color I like. Then I dilute 50% and apply. White on it's own is a tough one
I'm doing a shou sugi ban project with a guitar I am refinishing. It has a alder body and I'm nervous because I've never seen alder shou sugi and I'm worried that it won't work. Any advice on doing shou sugi ban for a wood with not much figuring?
Thank you, I found out it actually was basswood when I got to sanding and the figure is there! One other questions I had, if I got a wooden pickguard to ssb would the wood be too thin?
The sunbleached stain would probably work (I think it's oil based). Try a test piece first. My only concern is if the stain is water-based the epoxy might reactivate it. Cheers
I completed my first showcase shou sugi ban attempt on an entertainment console I built. The how- to videos shared by Build Dad Build really helped with my confidence in attempting this technique. Initially, I wasn’t sure of the stain I wanted to use, so of course I did a few trial runs on scrap wood. My original idea was to use several complementary colors of stain on the wood, and my hope was that the multi-colored stain would set into the grain and give the appearance of a vibrant swirl. Sadly, I couldn’t figure out how to achieve that look. Is that even possible?🤷♀️ Anyway, I utilized this technique on the console surface and drawer faces. I ended up using maple stain, and I went in with red stain and hand painted a few wood grain paths. It looks so dope!
Thank you for the kind words. And your project sounds amazing! Would you mind sharing pix on Discord? discord.gg/Aa749ws Also...check out @wtfudgery on IG. She's blending colored stains and doing an amazing job at it! Cheers!
Love the sun bleach. I would mix the metallic one with that sun bleach or do a coat of each with some blue. Im doing a large hanging pot rack and i am going for the same gray look
I use Dye from Michael's and soaks into a burnished finish, just saying, I know there are other brands, Jody from Inspire Wood uses General I think. I've used Ritz Dye for Clothes as well.
I like the Sun Bleached but, since the client doesn't want contrasting brown highlights, go Weathered Grey. Got a picture of the rig your client wants you to work on?
Always love your post. Quick question how long do you typically let the stain sit? Do you do anything different for dye vs stain? I typically let it sit for 3 mins
It kind of varies. But I'd say, on average, about 3-5 minutes. With dye I just wipe on. I'll only take any excess pooling off. And if the dye isn't as dark as I like, I'll come back and hit it with a second coat. Cheers!
I love the sunbleached but you cant seem to get it here in the UK. unless I get it from over the pond where the postage costs more than the paint. :/. I have seen some do a grey with whit spirit viniger with steel wool left in it for a while. I might try that because it's a cheap try out. As usual great vid mate 👍
Thanks, Paul! Check out this stuff, it looks like it might be what you're looking for. www.amazon.co.uk/Littlefairs-Water-Based-Wood-Stain/dp/B07HLS2YY7/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=wood%2Bstain%2Bwhite&qid=1590066725&sr=8-9&th=1 Cheers!
That sun bleach looks great and love the brown coming through to give it that character, but that Mercury is really nice too, would love to see that in more applications 👍🤘
I always forget the gloves. End up with colored fingers. Couldn't you also use the method of putting steal wool in vinegar to age the wood? It tends to give a grey look from what I've seen. I liked the last 2 or 3 the most.
Excellent video Nick! Definitely Going with the sunbleached. That steel wool technique is gold! Will be posting some pictures and video to the IG Sunday evening - James.mariano13 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Need to get some opinion on what you like to mix your Keda die powder with. I hope you've used them. I bought a sample pack as I'm going to do a narrow bar top of 16" x 10'x 1 1/2 " Pine. I have paint thinner to mix it with but reading the package it says you can just use water. I watched the video where you used Ritz and the other dyes including the Keda. Yours's looked to be liquid but I couldn't get those. So I'm wondering if you can mix it with water, you probably can't use thinner to make it to the amount you need. right? thinner is more oil based? Help please. You can leave it here or if you like I'm on FB facebook.com/tmh55 . Thanks
I mix Keda Powder with water and it works fine. I use the powders in this video: ruclips.net/video/S-HY2txy7n4/видео.html The liquids use lacquer thinner. Cheers!

you wood garage back wall is the coolest i've ever seen . I never thought to do that in the garage. Absolutely BRILLIANT !
Very cool man - amazing how different the results are!
You know it!
Cheers, brother!!
The look with the sun beached is exactly what I'm looking for. Now, time to find a torch!
Awesome!
Good luck.
Cheers!
Anyone without a torch try using a heat gun for small projects?
Sun bleach is by far my favorite stains I like to leave it on for 5-7 mins. The. Wipe less or more aggressively to change its appearance. It’s like a chameleon 🦎
Vincenzo Ragusa Do you recommend 1 or 2 coats ?
Jose Centeno I personally do one coat, but if you don’t get the results you like you can always reapply.

Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun ! But mama ! That’s where the fun isssssss ! 🤣. I thought of that line when you said not to look there cuz it was too bright . Love that song 🤣
Sweet. Just wondering, can’t you just lightly burn the wood to bring out the grain and white wash over that? Avoid having to grind off the char?
If you don’t want the texture, yes.
Just want to let you know I did my first burn and painted with chalk paint it was amazing I don’t think I will use stain again it gives it a nice texture. Thanks for you vids!
You're welcome!
And awesome!!
Cheers
white & Mercury stain are my fav! you're a funny dad.
Thanks, Nadine!

Great finishes. I like them all.

Not a lot really. Prolly 1/16 inch. Might get more like 1/8 if you burnt real deep.

Sure thing, brother.

My favourite was either weathered grey or classic grey 😎 also I love that Makita saw, I have the same one
The saw is LEAPS and BOUNDS above my old chop saw. I love it.

What do you think, weathered gray oil or water for a a bed frame
probably water. That way you can put a solid topcoat to keep it from chipping, etc.
Cheers
they're all great! love them all.. it just depends on your clients taste..
Thanks, Jon! I agree.
Cheers!
For the sunbleached stain do u just follow the directions for applying or do u wipe it completely off?
Apply. Let soak. Wipe off excess.
Cheers!
Can a 2x4 be load bearing?
I've been wanting to make a cabinet for a dartboard, wondering if you got and ideas for one or want to build one. See your take at one.
Maybe not for a dartboard, but I'll be making a cabinet for the shop here before too long.

Great job,,,congratulations and thanks for the good ideas 👍👍🍻🍻

Have you ever done a should sugi ban ice chest
I'm doing a shou sugi ban project with a guitar I am refinishing. It has a alder body and I'm nervous because I've never seen alder shou sugi and I'm worried that it won't work. Any advice on doing shou sugi ban for a wood with not much figuring?
The figuring is what gives you the SSB look. Woods without grain patterns just burn.
Thank you, I found out it actually was basswood when I got to sanding and the figure is there! One other questions I had, if I got a wooden pickguard to ssb would the wood be too thin?
Awesome video, just subscribed.
Hey Ryan
That's awesome!
Cheers, brother. Welcome to the Fray
Do any of the stains work with epoxy? I want to stain my wood slab to that sunbleach effect you did but I’m not sure if I can apply epoxy over it ...
The sunbleached stain would probably work (I think it's oil based). Try a test piece first. My only concern is if the stain is water-based the epoxy might reactivate it.
Cheers
I like the Mercury Artistic Vivations, I use a metallic paste wax on small projects so I lean towards the metal look.
That's my first time working with it. I like it! Trying to come up with a good project to use it on...

Hi Nick, great video!!
And I see that we got the same Makita mitre saw 😉😉
Thanks!
Love that saw. So much better than my old chop saw.
Cheers!

Yeah, me too. Before this one, I had a Chinese crap. I bought the 12 inch, and work with Freud blades. They are the best!!!
Thanks for sharing, what did you use to remove the burn with your handpiece and polish?
That is a flex shaft and nyalox brush attached to my drill.

Yeah he sent over a pic of it and a bunch of what he wants it to look like. LOL
Cheers!
Does Shou Sugi Ban continue to smell burnt after you've scraped it?
Yes. But the odor dissipates fairly quickly. And I usually put a topcoat on that takes care of that.
Cheers!
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks for the reply!
So which one did your client pick? Thanks for the video.
Thanks, Robert.
Soooo...funny story...he didn't like any of them.

White wash was my favorite.
Good job
Thanks!
Are you using pine?
Hey, Jennifer!
Yes. Those are just chunks of 2x4. Cedar works well for this too!
