One day he argued for flat Earth based on the following argument: "Let's say I leave my house, go have a meal at a restaurant, a drink at a bar, and have sex at her house with the cute girl I picked up, and come home and my house is still here. If the earth moves, how is that possible?" He was utterly convinced by my counter argument: "Let's say you are in your seat on the train going from LA to Chicago. You go have a meal in the dining car, a drink in the club car, and have sex in a berth in the sleeping car with the fine woman you met. Then you go back to your seat and it's still where it was when you left. Does that mean the train didn't move?" A light went on in his head and he understood. I'm a hobby (astro)physicist but psychologist by trade and I thought of a psychological model to go with the flat earth society and why it is so much more prevalent in very meritocratic societies - i.e. the USA. A large part of US culture is Calvinistic in essence saying with hard work come more blessings. This translates into the "American Dream" where anyone can become anything regardless of heritage only depending on their own talents and efforts. Unfortunately this also puts a lot of blame on those who, well, don't get very far on the social hierarchy. The mind is wonderful at compensating for negative thoughts and emotions, rationalising them away unconsciously in amazing ways. My hypothesis is now, that most flat earth followers are a special type of narcissist personality who fail to reach a societal level they think they deserve. You can then either reevaluate your self-image (which is painful) or you re-evaluate society. By subscribing to a conspiracy theory you not only elevate yourself to an elitist, enlightened level only attained by few, you also simultaneously degrade every person that you previously had to "look up to", e.g. academics, politicians and "smarter" people. Furthermore, you find others with exactly the same mindset and company is always good. That is also the reason why challenging any flat earth follower with rational arguments will most likely amount to nothing, because following your logic they would have to challenge their self-image and re-evaluate their social standing. And the unscientific part of me relishes the thought of a perfect trap where you either have to get down to the bottom with your argumentation or admit you fit into the diagnosis of an anti-authoritarian narcissist... But that is really just a side note.

Good on you for offering a voice of reason! ✌️
I don't think flat earthers even matter like they are narcissistic and use confirmation bias, cherry picking etc. I sometimes get so angry that i want to send them to space and throw them out of spacecraft.
I had my education up to high school in Hong Kong for 18 years, I then moved to the US to continue my studies because why not. One day I had the idea of asking my friends in the US of what they thought about the earth. Surprisingly, 2 of them arent convinced that the earth is round. You know what I did after year 1, I returned to Hong Kong.
@Dylan Stewart yeaa see I tried to find one but istead I found out that most of flat earthers don‘t accually believe that there are other planets out there... they say, that they are lights in the sky just like the sun... so for them they are what we would call „stars“ but you know... for them they are lightning balls... sorry man... was disappointed too, but what can we expect...
Here's my question if the Earth flat, why would everyone lie about it? Why would governments lie about this? What do they gain from tell you the Earth is a different shape?
of, a few of them say, "THE government is trying to hide god." utterly absurd. if "THE" government wanted to "hide god" they would ban churches and bibles, not lie about things that ANYONE can see for themselves just by looking from a tall building!
Consistency isn't flat earthers' strong suit. "Hiding God" seems to be the most common answer, but when asked directly, most of them tend to avoid answering and give responses like so they can keep funneling money to NASA or something like that. They seem to think atheists are much more numerous and powerful than they really are.
@rayopeongo But still raises the question of why haven't any government spilled the beans. Plus, there's other space agencies(?) Like SpaceX, ISRO, or The Canadian Space Agency, or every other space agency, why are they splitting money only with Nasa?
This is getting out of hand. To think how far we've come in terms of technology and our understanding of the universe and yet more and more people seem intent on dragging us back into the dark ages. From alternative medicine proponents an antivaxers to Flat earthers and Young Earth Creationists, it's an absolute epidemic. And it's only going to get worse as we continue to lag further and further behind in areas like education and research.
There is no dark ages, never was and never will be! Why I say that, is because God created the Heaven and Earth, in the book of Genius chapter 1 God tells us that He created everything! Not the big bang theory, we didn't come from Ape's, nor is the Globe spinning thousands of miles around the Sun! If you do some what of the Bible where does it tell you we are spinning, and we came from Ape's?
@@douglasbachman9868 It's almost as if the Bible isn't a science textbook and was written by primitive people who were speculating about how things came to be. 😱 The term "dark ages" refers to the medieval period when things like medicine and technology were practically nonexistent and the culture was dominated by practices that caused untold consequences. Are you seriously trying to argue that practices like blood letting and dumping refuse in the street were good ideas? That discoveries like the workings of the circulatory system and the germ theory disease weren't completely revolutionary? Evolution doesn't say humans evolved from apes, we share a common ancestor. If god created everything as it appears today, why do we see a gradual increase in complexity spanning millions of years throughout the fossil record? This increase in complexity is mirrored in genetics. If creation were true, all fossils would resemble the creatures we see today. I could go on and on about the evidence for evolution. I have degree in biology, after all. Inflation theory was first proposed by a CHRISTIAN PRIEST! Red shifting of galaxies and cosmic background radiation support the theory of Inflation. What about Jeran and Bob doing seperate experiments that show the curvature of the earth and 15 degrees of rotation per hour, as the heliocentric model predicts? Why can't you flat earthers predict eclipses like we can with the heliocentric model? How does the fact that the stars rotate around two different poles fit with the flat earth? How do sunsets work on a flat earth? (Don't give me that vanishing point BS. If that were true the sun would disappear uniformly, not from the bottom up.) Get your head out of the Bible and actually learn about what you're trying to debunk. Presenting a strawman version of the theories Kent Hovind style just proves you've no idea what you are talking about. If you want to believe that god used Inflation and Evolution to create the world, knock yourself out. But denying these things exist, despite all evidence to the contrary, is just asinine.
I don't know what kind of treatment you're referring to, but if it's science-based, then that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about homeopathy, crystal healing, reiki, the really really dumb stuff.

Do you mean "Würzburg"? How nasty that your family lives in city with a letter that you probably don't have on your keyboard! 😆
Remarkably well-articulated.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains Thank you! I think you did a wonderful job in your video, too - it's really sad it most likely will not move any conspiracy nut to overthink their perspective. But I enjoyed it very much.
@Pete is never wrong Of course, this is an overly simplified model and yes, the poor education definitely plays a part since, if you were taught scientific deductive thinking, it'd be hard to not notice the wild incongruities of this model. Sadly, my current research focuses on autism spectrum disorders and I don't have the time or funds to actually work on this scientifically.
@@zhaya5255 There is plenty to work with, and there are other likely mechanisms to consider, such as a belief in complex conspiracies that keep these poor simple folk in their place. We have seen the power of individuals who coalesce these nebulous feelings and provide a simple scapegoat as cause, which can lead to mass action directed towards a "solution". Invariably, the people driving that bus are not stupid, unlike the herd that they mobilize, and no special skills or education are required to participate. Oh yes, it has happened, and if it sounds familiar, you're right.
@@phildavenport2467 Of course. As I said, it's a simplified model, much like the one about addiction as an inherited personality trait. There's never just one cause for a given behaviour or personality development. I can't count how often I heard my lecturers' favourite word "biopsychosocial" in my studies. 😅
Much as in addiction and abuse, there is a vulnerability in some individuals and there are people who have the ability to single out these targets and make use of their susceptibility.

Haha. You can't figure out how evidence works, so other people are stupid.
Does your asinine second-hand claim make any evidence disappear, cletus.?

Who says they never proved it?
You know who else we were taught about that proved the rotation of the earth beyond all doubt? Leon Foucalt in 1851, with a simple device called a pendulum. Albert Einstein wasn't born until 1879, so the earth's rotation had already been proved and he certainly agreed with the evidence.
So since I'm a special kind of stupid, why don't you help me understand what your point is, exactly.
@Gra Ra5
I generally refuse to even bother with them because I believe most of them know the earth is a globe; they just enjoy arguing for the sake of arguing.
@Gra Ra5
Yep yep, I totally agree with that, that's the same reason I respond (when I do) as well. It sucks to think that these idiots are perpetuating all this demonstrable false information for some impressionable young person to come across and find it completely unchecked. And you're right, they go from ad hoc to support their claims, ad hominem when they're challenged and silence when they realize they don't stand a chance.
Good on you for offering a voice of reason! ✌️
The fact that we're living in a time where we have to explain this science and continuously have to debunk flat earth nonsense is mind-blowing to me.
Variation is how a species adapts and thrives. Flat Earthers are just the extremely stupid end of the bell curve.
Trump 2024!
I don't think flat earthers even matter like they are narcissistic and use confirmation bias, cherry picking etc. I sometimes get so angry that i want to send them to space and throw them out of spacecraft.
May be they WANT attention desperately.
What is a woman???
I had my education up to high school in Hong Kong for 18 years, I then moved to the US to continue my studies because why not. One day I had the idea of asking my friends in the US of what they thought about the earth. Surprisingly, 2 of them arent convinced that the earth is round.
You know what I did after year 1, I returned to Hong Kong.
Smart.
We do not take education seriously at all here. It's sad.
I used to be a flat earther. Then I turned 3.
This joke is repeated more often then the bs flat earth explanations

Yep I’m right now.
Cool 37281 ohhh interesting, heard something like that too, thx
@Dylan Stewart yeaa see I tried to find one but istead I found out that most of flat earthers don‘t accually believe that there are other planets out there... they say, that they are lights in the sky just like the sun... so for them they are what we would call „stars“ but you know... for them they are lightning balls... sorry man... was disappointed too, but what can we expect...
yup
yaaa rn so i can make em cry...

@@Algorithm_God_Cult Yeah, Haha
Here's my question if the Earth flat, why would everyone lie about it? Why would governments lie about this? What do they gain from tell you the Earth is a different shape?
of, a few of them say, "THE government is trying to hide god."
utterly absurd.
if "THE" government wanted to "hide god" they would ban churches and bibles, not lie about things that ANYONE can see for themselves just by looking from a tall building!
Consistency isn't flat earthers' strong suit. "Hiding God" seems to be the most common answer, but when asked directly, most of them tend to avoid answering and give responses like so they can keep funneling money to NASA or something like that. They seem to think atheists are much more numerous and powerful than they really are.
@@ericb3157So according to them, the governments are more powerful than God?
The other argument is that everyone in on the "globe earth conspiracy" makes money by splitting up NASA's budget.
The term "dark ages" refers to the medieval period when things like medicine and technology were practically nonexistent and the culture was dominated by practices that caused untold consequences.
If that were true the sun would disappear uniformly, not from the bottom up.)
Get your head out of the Bible and actually learn about what you're trying to debunk.
Out of whose hands? Are you a collectivist who thinks that everybody should bow to what you believe is "a common goal"?
@@HarryBalzak I put these together too. In a reality basket. Though most of the "alternative medicine" methods are far from solving health problems also.

@@rap1df1r3 When you have finished unsuccessfully attacking the globe evidence, how about you show us YOUR evidence for YOUR flat Earth? Like your ice wall perimeter holding in your oceans? No flat Earth without it, but you can't find any, can you? Because it doesn't exist, does it? Dumbass.
