Adagio Strings by Samuel Barber - Patrick Dexter cello Version

- From the second movement of Barber's string quartet Opus 11. It's without a doubt his most recognisable work and, once you hear it, you'll never be the same again!
Despite its slow tempo and name which literally means 'slow' in Italian, this piece does not wait around. Its impact is felt within seconds and from there grows and grows to such beauty and sorrow it's almost excruciating in its sublimity. For me, it only took 10 seconds for this piece of music to change my life forever.
When I first heard this music as a teenager, I thought I had given up on classical music for good. I thought it had nothing new to offer. Everything was out of touch and over played. I had no interest. Hearing Samuel Barber's Adagio changed all that.
From the moment the strings swell in the opening bars, I knew there was a power to classical music that could move touch the deepest depths of my soul and move me to tears. I won't say much more about it but needless to say, I would not be playing music today if it weren't for this piece.
Remembering the great American composer Samuel Barber today on the anniversary of his death (1910 - 1981).
Fantastic
Beautiful! One of my favorite pieces. I heard a string quartet perform this and at the end of this movement there were quite a few a people with tears in their eyes. So moving. Great job.
Thank you very much!
A man, his cello and the music become one. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎
Lovely.
Your location looks like the fictional island in the movie “Banshees of Inisherin.
He lives in Ireland that's why.
@@pinkfreud01 I know; but this scene with the water in the background looks exactly like the screen set.
@@oliveoil4380 oh now I got what you point out! Yeah that seems right I didn’t realize it. Btw the movie was really great!!
the film set was a real island, just off the coast from where I live, it has a different name but it was all filmed on the real island!
Beautiful! Thank you for the personal background. I know very little about classical music, but I know this one. I never knew the composer or title of the piece until I began hearing it on my classical radio station and would catch them giving the information. I am glad your love for music was renewed! I've had that experience at different points of my life. It's like God returning to you a gift you thought you had lost forever.
You're very welcome!
