  • Conductor, composer, pianist, pedagogue, mentor - The most remarkable thing about Leonard Bernstein was that he was all of the above, but he was also more than just that - "When Lenny came, everyone woke up and sat up and laid their hearts out for him!" In the first episode, Bernstein’s fellow musicians and colleagues tune in to talk about the man who so profoundly inspired them.
About BERNSTEIN INSIGHT: A Glimpse of Genius
Leonard Bernstein, one of the most well-known, gifted, and influential musicians in classical music history, captures the hearts of musicians and audiences worldwide as conductor, composer, collaborator, and mentor. This series delves into Leonard Bernstein's multifaceted genius as told by fellow musicians who are profoundly inspired by him and have had the honour of crossing paths with him - both professionally and personally.
    About Jon Tolansky:
Formerly a musician at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Jon Tolansky specialises in making documentary features on composers and performers for international radio organisations and recording companies. totally overrated he like callas was more a personality than a particularly gifted musician. He also was a repulsive human. West side story was his apogee and grand. I was particularly disgusted with his behavior toward Christa ludwig the great mezzo soprano who gently corrected him about tempo of a piece she was going to sing and who the orchestra agreed with. I think it was a deliberate anti german gesture on his part to publicly humiliate her. I despise this man his revolting gesticulations and horrid political actions.

really ? try listening to some of her recording a little more carefully. She had defects in the upper register voice "waffled" and it deteriorated thru time. She left the stage due to this and the weight loss was believed to have exacerbated it I thought I was crazy hearing this years ago until, I believe, Will Crutchfield wrote a critique after her death. She had a mesmerizing persona on stage her dramatic flair was unique but the voice itself was lacking. I have close to 500 classical CDs and LPs and i don't think either of my husbands purchased one with her. Her life was tragic on an "operatic" level. @@Susan-lf2hl

Oh my God. Calling this man a genius is an insult to real geniuses. Jumping up and down and dancing on a podium doesn't make you go good conductor, let alone a genius. But DGG has to make a profit, so anything goes I guess. Other great DGG conductors like Böhm, Abbado, Kleiber and Karajan would laugh in your face if you called them geniuses.

None of the conductors you listed composed sublime music like Bernstein. And none of them were as good as him at conducting either. Go outside and stop being miserable online.
