I have seen travelers in Worcestershire for many years now there are always in Redditch roundabout at Christmas every year they never leave rubbish around and when I worked for Redditch council and I used to give them bags for there rubbish and it was always bagged up and the land was tidy the horses kept the grass down they don't cause any trouble it's other types of travellers in caravans who make the trouble and everybody else gets treated bad and it's a really a shame I always slow down and give room to anybody with horses

Well I’m from a Cumbrian farming background.
I am sorry to see people making it deliberately harder for the travelling people to stay on the roadsides or the verges.
The fair has gone on for centuries. It’s only for a short time each year.

Thanks Jimmy, and no I am not a Traveller. Light & Life Christian Travellers and Gypsies evangelise at Appleby and want to bring peace between the settled Community . Only vardas horse drawn are allowed now ,police are forcing other trailers towed by cars diverting them away from Appleby to eg Kirby Stephen etc. it’s about Ancient Customs and it’s only for a few days . So if there are disruptions it’s very brief and temporary . Leave them alone .

On the other hand you have the lying, thieving animal bullies who are cruel, their horses work through fear, they are not real horsemen.

Lived in Appleby 25 years all my life, grew up there . up untill 4 years ago. Glad to be out of there. Some are nice, but there's minority that are there to cause nothing but trouble. They always leave a right mess and dont clean up after themselves. Some are also not respectful to the locals either. Its changed alot of the years, it's not like it used to be.

    • @Wishful-Thinking

Your gripes could be equally applicable to so called normal members of society who live permanently in houses and in specific areas. Being disrespectful, leaving or living in a mess, causing trouble etc is certainly not the preserve of the travelling community so I’m really not sure what your points are unless you’re blatantly practising out and out discrimination via ignorance? 🤔

Hopefully there's not much trouble this year, being local and family who have lived there for decades including myself, it isn't the same as it used to be. Hopefully there isn't any trouble like brake ins etc, but there's always something that happens. Growing up, I got sick of the fair eventually and don't like them at all but respect what they do. @@Roadshome

    • @Wishful-Thinking

@@tjsmith6412 Well yes it’s a minority of people who do undesirable things whether it’s in the travelling community or the settled communities, the majority of people are usually well behaved, peaceful, law abiding, etc. I feel the travelling community does get an unfair bad rap over all. Most of them get tarred with the same brush and stuck with in a lot of cases an undesirable stigma. I agree Appleby residents do get their lives disrupted during the annual Appleby travellers fair but the fair is a very old tradition, its part of British heritage and it’s part of the deal choosing to live in Appleby and let’s be honest the boost to the local economy brought by the fair isn’t to be sniffed at.

Never saw police or hassle of any kind but fast forward to today with freedoms and old traditional ways of life fading away. Everything is on the decline and that's without the shite that's happening world wide. Sad to see those travellers not only hassled by the police and authorities but to be pressured into giving up their ways of living. Good video despite not being able to continue on with the journey.

It's not right to look at it through rose tinted glasses, the ways of living aren't perfect. I work at a shop on the way to the horsefair, and half the travellers that come in are good, polite and friendly family folk who are a pleasure to serve. The other half steal and intimidated the staff. We've had around 5 cases (that's the cases we see ourselves not including what we don't see) of theft every day since the lead up to the horsefair, and the police leave them alone.

Gypsy's bring on their own problems. They leave a mess when leaving a roadside verge instead why don't they hire a skip?? They target elderly people and scam them in regards to roof work that doesn't need doing and then charge the homeowners a ridiculous amount of money. Why don't they undertake genuine work??? I have no sympathy for them, they could alter how they behave and the majority of people would then have no issues with them

Locals have bought houses in the nice quiet town, liking what they see but now want to make that town suit themselves. Its traditions we should all be proud of. We spotted a gypsy caravan and 2 horses, pulled into a lay-by around 200 meters in front of us, with the guy sorting the horses reins out etc. We were on a very long straight section of road, with nothing behind us as far as we could see, yet he still led the horses and caravan straight out into the road in front of us...... Sheer ignorance. As we continued driving towards Sedbergh, we often saw piles of rubbish left at the side of the road, where they'd stopped overnight.

I feel this is biased. Firstly you can’t just pull up on private farming land. This could be for grazing or feed during winter months for their own stock . Secondly there has always been police in the rural areas due to the amount of travellers and visitors who pass along the way. It makes sure the roads are kept open and traffic runs smoothly as well as informing motorists to drive safely due to horses being in the area. Travellers usually have a place to stay for free in most villages and towns along the way. I know because I live in one. Parking on the roadside causes obstruction and can be a danger to them and passing motorists . It’s the same in the summer when holidaymakers block farming gates or park on verges which causes issues for passing ambulances or fire service vehicles. Your not being targeted .You don’t want little children or pets running into the road. Recovery drivers are there at the request of the police , not only do they tow stolen caravans like you witnessed, they also assist the travellers when they breakdown , not all travellers arrive on horses . The police are always visible and active during an event where thousands of people attend, it’s for local and travellers safety. The police won’t tow you because your in a van or caravan ,they will simply ask you to move on , they will tow you if your caravan is marked as stolen. My town offers free grazing areas and next to a river so water supply is plenty . They light camp fires and enjoy the area until they move nearer Appleby for the event. You are guessing the issues and have no knowledge of what happens when the police get involved. Someone somewhere will be happy their caravans are being returned . Once the event starts there will be thousands of people from all over the uk in one small area . People need to get to work and the police make sure the roads are kept clear and safety is their priority for travellers and public alike . It’s a logistical nightmare for many and making sure everyone gets to their destination safely without causing to much disruption for locals is all that’s happening. I say, enjoy the sunshine , find somewhere to light your campfire and have a wonderful week . Persecution is not happening in Cumbria so maybe stop looking for it .

I do not understand why people are prejudiced against Travellers. A simple solution is for local Councils to set up dedicated sites with waste disposal, water, etc...just like camp sites. Travellers could pay a fee just like other camper van people. I believe Travellers should be given Royal Charter protection for their unique heritage. They deserve to be treated with same respect as everyone else. It is the lack of decent sites that creates the problems. Shame on local authorities! Treat Travellers with Respect...that is the only solution.❤❤❤

The travellers made offers on the fields they were in. Council objected and it was sold to current owner. For some reason the council or local group don't want them to own a field in the area. It seams the new land owner knows the council and police so obviously someone with authority in the area.
I wish my ad revenue was good enough to buy a bag of shopping each week let alone a field 😢

This is a very good well detailed report highlighting the issues. It's clear as day it's outright discrimination against this community and vanlifers .personally I just see it as an alternative way of living and I see no issues with it what so ever .
Now surely councils national parks along with police etc have a duty of care towards such community's and that is to have selected sights and points in the area where you can stop over .
Landowners and farmers themselves have they ever considered they is a possible workforce here for farms and land mangernent ?
Another point they is porching plus theft in the countryside so community's such as this are our eyes and ears they get to hear rumours plus spot possible problems and I'm sure word flag such problems up that clearly would help the police and farmers for exsample.
As far as I'm concerned they needs to be a full consultation meetings all sides to resolve the issues .

Firstly, thank for watching and your comment.
We had already heard that actions had been taken to unable people to pull onto verges ect. It is clear as day that the people in Appleby and surrounding areas want to stop the travelling people coming, but they have been coming for hundreds of years. So instead they are just making it increasingly difficult and damn right dangerous.

@@Roadshome fully agree on your points .
Just a question on those carriages which when you look at them it's a very high standard of work the community will have a high skill level in Carpenter wheel turning right through to working with metals so they have unique skills and specialised woods and metals etc .
So this is a untapped opportunity other trades out there might be intrested in enhanced schools could the council and national park set something up a center where this community can teach ?
It could be somekind of middle ground a place all community's get to know each other ?

you have to be careful though as in Durham , Darlington and Nth Yorkshire the settled teaching Community has just used and abused the budget allotted intended for the use of the Travelling Community and siphoned it off for the Settled Community. Especially in the 1990,s & 2000,s. Blaming them for a lack of interest and consistency. So sneaky, they acquire teaching qualifications by default and destroy the reputations of those who object to unknown exploitation of these children and people. So who is ripping who off ?

It's not all of them. And that's what I'm trying to get across to people. It's a few, maybe more than just a few, but as I keep saying men rape women, but not all men are rapists. It's exactly the same with the black community. Black men rob people in London probably more than any other race but they are not all robbers. You have become blinded with the bad experiences you have had in passed and think they are all bad.

Yes I agree with they shouldn't have gone into field and I think they soon realised this next day. We spoke to the travelers at devils bridge, they seamed genuine. They went onto field cos the guys that came after us were told police would move them in morning from the road.
We did not have any conversation with the travelers where the caravans were towed. We asked the tow guys and police but they did not want to talk, other than say they were not interested in our van. We live in our van, so I hope you have some understanding what it's like to have police outside and not knowing what's going on. We parked on our own in the lay-by to conform to law.

Did you see a STOP sign?

    • @Roadshome
      @Roadshome  8 месяцев назад +1

No is the answer, as its a junction with a give way sign, white triangle, red boarder, broken white lines, not a STOP sign. Highway code rule - you MUST give way to traffic on the main road when emerging from a junction with broken white lines across the road. If there is NO traffic, you do not need to stop. You MUST stop at a solid white line or a stop sign. You also do not need to stop in your car if the way is clear.

    • @Roadshome
      @Roadshome  8 месяцев назад

Nope cos there wasn't one. It's a give way. White triangle red boarder. Broken white lines, If you were a HGV driver you would fail your test if you stopped at a give way with NO traffic coming. It's considered wasting fuel.

Thank you although I have had runins with Gypsy's on more than one occasion. Alas some groups around Newark are not friendly and very criminal. I do defend good well behaved travellers and Gypsy's. Also the facts that we are all in the same boat as they bring in the 15 minute cities it's all related and it is going to get tighter as they aim continue their aims of depopulation and herd everyone into these hunger game cities. So we need to all join together to defend our rights and freedoms and also do our own Policing against those elements who are criminal.

It pisses me off the way people are treated whoever they are , if they do not conform to living in a brick by house , I feel the injustice and no one stands up for them or speaks out for them , there is a growing culture now of car and van life as a choice of living because they can’t afford a home , give them space to stay along routes and let them show you they leave it better than when they arrive why should they set an example when treated so badly .

The fair was established in 1775. Anyone who owns land or has a house in that town either bought it knowing the history or in some very rare cases, their ancestors made money from the fair to buy the land they now own. In any case those who have had ancestors who made the purchases should be part of its tradition. It's their history, too. Those who have come from outside and moved in recent times knowing the history and have no right to moan.
