The purpose of the political classes has ALWAYS been to rob and enslave the people. Large numbers of people decided to obey without question, during the Covid scam and this means that tyranny will come about far faster. At the moment, there is no digital ID and without that, pay per mile would be problematic. The thing that is far more likely will be large increases in fuel duty, with the retention of the current road tax. Increases in fuel duty are easily implemented and impossible to easily avoid. As you suggest, large increases in transport costs, will mean pretty much everything costing more. Very high fuel duty will also encourage more to look at EVs, which, if the cost of fuel almost doubles, will become far more attractive pretty much overnight. The large number of vanlife videos, will mean it will be very easy to get cross-party support for measures that restrict overnighting to officially approved and closely monitored sites, whose charges will be high. I would imagine Wiltshire Council have a very substantial environmental impact report on the Drove and the immediate area, and this will almost certainly be used to implement a TRO on the Drove, and to support the introduction of more far-reaching legislation, related to the cessation of overnighting in vehicles?

The transport committee have an open inquiry on road pricing. Doesn't look like much has happened for over a year. They've got reports on their website and they seem to be talking to stakeholders, including the road haulage association about the impact and including costs. More questions than answers from what I can see.

They won’t charge per mile

It's not coming in October. The cameras and infrastructure is not there. The fixed cameras are ANPR and speed cameras. The AI cameras are on a trial basis for speed, no seatbelt and phone use. If pay per mile was coming in there would be cameras every mile. There are no cameras. Its under consideration and not coming in. Its all just conspiracy theories and click bait all over the internet.

I left the Uk in 2016 as I couldn't afford to live the UK, I have worked continuously and paid UK tax from the age of 16 and am now 72 and still working part time. If there is one thing I agree with what this socialist gov are doing and that is to reduce vehicle usage ...far too many cars on the roads imho. Ppl will be a lot healthier not breathing in poisonous fumes, reduce road deaths, and help sort obesity to name a few.

A lot of things are being discussed (pensions, etc.) - hopefully it doesn't mean it will come in force. It would be highly unpopular so hopefully Labour will skip it. These cameras must have been installed - for the most part - prior to Labour coming in so hopefully they aren't specifically to do with 'road pricing' - I hope so anyways. Supposed to be a budget in October - let's see.

I’ll add my ten pence about this , I personally have never worried about pay per mile . I lived in NZ for 15 years and we had it there on diesels 20 years ago . NZ is often a test bed for other first world countries as we have a small population to get sample data on how a particular project will operate. We had contactless payment years before the UK and many other things . Generally if it worked in NZ it was rolled out in a bigger scale elsewhere. With regards to pay per mile it worked off a system of buying X amount of kilometres that showed in your windscreen . From memory there was either less GST (VAT) on diesel or none , it was a long time ago …but diesel was cheap . Your mileage was recorded at every WOF , a MOT every 6 months and if u we’re stopped by the cops and shown that u had used all your mileage credits then the fines were huge for every KM u had exceeded . Why did I like this system , well it was fairer for those people who did minimal mileage as the fuel was cheap and they only needed to pay a small amount per year to own and run a vehicle but the best part was a lot of us with a brain used a sat nav for our speed and disconnected the odometer for most of the year 😂 it was a little harder on large vehicles and commercial stuff as they were fitted with hub meters that weren’t as easy to bypass . That’s why it’s also important for the government here to get old analogue vehicles off the road , not emissions but they are not digitally connected so they can cheat the system much easier .
