  • It's 26th July, and as we roam around wonderful Yorkshire, we discover a new children's TV programme, chat to the Virgin trains designer, forget to look at something important in Scarborough, get a little bit rained on, and oh - knock out seven very awkward stations!
All The Stations merchandise is available at our online shop, here: allthestations....
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations....
    ROUTE: Knaresborough - York - Scarborough - Bridlington - Hull - Goole - Leeds
Four of the seven awkward stations are Rawcliffe, Snaith, Hensall and Whitley Bridge) which only gets 3 trains a day, one w/b in the morning, and then one e/b in the evening and the return (which we caught) w/b in the evening.

Poppleton was the site of a 'railway nursery', which provided all the flowers for railway station gardens and restaurant car table ornaments. Part of the nursery still exists, with a short narrow gauge railway (made 'infamous' by the Narrow Gauge Railway Modelling Forum's photo quiz where anyone who doesn't know the answer just says "Poppleton Nurseries"!)

There's actually two cliff railways in Scarborough, the other one being at the Pavilion at South Bay. But there were once four! There was one the other side of the Grand that was mostly in position but unoperational in 2012 (the last time I went to Scarborough), whilst the other was at North Bay.

Probably know this all ready, but there used to be platform 1,2, 3, 7 and 8. Some of the platforms are longer than usual to accommodate the long special holiday trains that used to come to Bridlington, 7 and 8 were especially long. The concourse is so wide so it could accomodate the huge number of people getting off the holiday trains.

    Welcome to East Yorkshire :)
FYI you got off at Broomfleet but the caption said Brough.

Krystle White whoops! We meant Broomfleet, not Brough.

Brough really isn't an awkward station! 67 trains a day from Hull, and trains from as far afield as London and Manchester as well...

I was late catching up with your tweets that day otherwise I would have been waving maniacally at your train from the level crossing at Brough.

Down the hill from the Castle is a Church. Across a walk path is the new graveyard . . . where there is a famous Writer buried. Agreed, they recently replaced the headstone. And the edges are already wearing away! (Hint: she died in 1849).

Shaun House When I hear the name Ruth, I think of one of the main characters in the movie Threads, one of the greatest feel-good movies of the 1980s.

My local Scarborough station. For those who don't know, Scarborough also used to have a branch line which used to run to Whitby via Scalby and Robin Hoods Bay ☺

The Whitby to Scarborough railway (closed by Guess Who) has now been converted to a cycle track called the Cinder Track. We cycled from Ravenscar to Whitby and back, and it was a tough climb for the last mile back to the car. At least, it was for me; my wife has a Cheat Bike (an electric bike) so she found it easy.
I can remember when I was little playing in the stream at Sandsend (just north of Whitby) and jumping off one of the foundation supports of the old viaduct into the water.
The highlight of the Cinder Track is the magnificent view of Whitby Abbey from Larpool Viaduct, especially if there's a steam train from Pickering going under the viaduct on the Grosmont-Whitby line.

I wish they put as much work into the Southern livery as they do into Virgin Train's. It really tells you something about the franchise when the word 'First Class' is larger than the word 'Southern'

Virgin Trains don't go to Scarborough! It's only served by TransPennine Express, Northern and East Midlands Trains.
