- It's 8th August, and it's our suburban Glasgow week which finally get us to a station that we've been looking forward to going to probably the most ... Wemyss Bay.
Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.com/gb/album/all... (other stores are available....)
Geoff and Vicki are visiting ALL 2,563 national railway stations in Britain - view the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at: allthestations.co.uk/
ROUTE: Glasgow Central - Gourock - Port Glasgow - Wemyss Bay - Largs - West Kilbride - Ardrossan Harbour - Kilwinning - Newton on Ayr - Dalry - Paisley Gilmour Street - Paisley Canal - Glasgow Central
It says something good about Wemyss Bay that, having seen thousands of stations in Britain, Geoff and Vicki can still be so very impressed by one.
Stunning drone view of Wemyss Bay station, what a masterpiece of a station. Never heard of it before and now a must visit place.
Glad to know about putting the flowers and plants back in it. That is what I remember of it .
Ah, you should have seen Wemyss Bay station in the fifties, when ther were flowers everywhere . So exciting for a wee girl on her way with her parents to Port Bannatyne!
2:48 Geoff to Vicki: Why are you excited?
Because: Vicki.
Wemyss Bay station: a marvel.
What a beautiful beautiful station Wemyss Bay is 🙂🙂
Hi Geoff and Vicki!
It's so nice to see the Ayrshire and Inverclyde lines being shown for how nice they can be. I drive all the electric ScotRail trains out of Glasgow Central high level (except Paisley Canal and Lanark) so going down the coast has become nothing special although Wemyss Bay (locally pr Wimms Bay) is always a pleasure to see. Maybe after seeing this I'll take a look out the side window at the scenery on the next nice day.
On a side note, regarding a comment you made in the Episode 50 at Dundee with driver Neil the other day, I have a spare ScotRail drivers tie if you'd like it.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the Scottish stations
hey David, lovely comment ... thanks! Glasgow was much more interesting that we'd envisaged and was fun to do, lots of history and loads of great stations. send us an email if you want to talk ties !!
I live one station up from wemyss bay and love wemyss bay station. The pub inside the station is great!!
Yeh, Gorgeous as all of Scotlands cities are Geoff, I have to say personally that (as you have found) the very best thing about them is how quickly you can escape into the gorgeous countryside. I grew up about a 20 minute drive from the edge of greater Glasgow but it was also in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park. A tiny, beautiful village of about 900 people surrounded by farms, lochs and mountains that was easily commutable to and from Glasgow!
I’m soooo glad you visited Gourock,it’s my local station!!!😮😮🎉🎉❤❤
This is on the list of "best episodes." :)
I used to take the train to Wemyss every day to get to work in Greenock. At IBM!
It's been 2 years, but how did you feel when the station got mothballed?
The james and sandy easdale will buy ibm if they do ibm station will reopen it will be a staudim
Wemyss Bay is by far my favourite of all the stations I have visited, the architechture is amazing
Simply brilliant! Congratulations on having completed your journey and your BBC interview the other day. I will miss your show a great deal and hope to welcome you one day in Switzerland
Damian Schaller All the Stations Switzerland should be their next project.
I love these "Friends of XYZ Station." So dedicated to these wonderful stations. I'd like to think that I'd volunteer to help keep these great stations going. Also, Geoff at 7:27: stationgasm.
Wemyss Bay looks amazing, wonderful architecture and so well kept. One day, I will visit!
I liked the "friends of" lady and her explanation of how they were inspired to form their group, and the bookshop. It would have been interesting to interview her " rail enthusiast" husband. The Weymss Bay Station is fascinating, and the setting is beautiful. I never heard of it before. Excellent video!
That little boat you saw in Gourock had come from Kilcreggan!
Curved urinals now that's taking the.....
I'm not going to stand for that.....
It is a wee bit strange...
Shot of the Waverley Paddle Steamer. Bonus.
Great memories of Wemyss Bay station - getting off the steam train from Glasgow and running down the slope to board PS Jupiter for the sail to Rothesay for the summer holidays. At that time, the station was absolutely full of planters and hanging baskets.
Another first class video. I really love the way they are put together, the chats along the way with locals, the presentation, and your interactions with each other. It does make you think at times you are actually there as part of the adventure. It really was worth backing the project and great value for money. I look forward to the remaining episodes. Well done.
When you do #alltheferries the urinals at Rothesay are a must. Delighted you had such lovely weather on the Costa Clyde
This is exactly what I was going to say! It does sound like a bit of a joke but the old Victorian public convenience at the shore in Rothesay is truly amazing. And I knew you guys would love Wemyss Bay, so I was delighted to see your reaction to it!
Yeah Fishguard to Rosslere
Welcome to All The Urinals - Bonus Video!
Its Wemyss Bay Day! August 4th 2019 and I’m sat in the cafe at the very station.
I asked, do you get more footfall since the video? Yes. Lol
I'm seriously thinking about moving to a place in Skelmorie and i would be using Weymss Bay station quite a lot if i did, so this was very formative, thanks a lot.
That's immediately on my bucket list, what a beautiful station !
Favourite post-credits clip of the whole project. Or at least top 3!!!!! 👍
Wemyss Bay - the most beautiful station in Britain? Must be in the top few places. And the drone shots are superb.
Steve Hallam the entire west coast is pretty.
Class 314s rarely operate on Wemyss Bay line. Great spot!!!
2:10 - It's all right - you'll be able to get on a boat when you go to the Isle of Wight...
I am getting the train from Slateford to Paisley Gilmour Street tomorrow via Glasgow Central as I have never been to Paisley before. I will hopefully meet you at Leven station on Sunday morning morning Geoff.
You guys are awesome and remind me of my Trekyards gurus on the Star Trek feed. I’m going to Wemyss Bay in August.
I use theses lines regularly. I am so happy that they got into the video. Loved seeing what you guys thought of them :D.
Glad you had such a fantastic time! Hoping to see Helensburgh tomorrow? Going to miss the videos as well!
Came to this late, l nearly missed it.
So glad I did not brought back some good memories.
I traveled from Bangor (wales) to Pasley on the train when I was 17, every other week.
Which started my fondness for train travel.
Well done both of you your project was well documented and your presentation was natural and entertaining.
Keep well (George)
You missed the castle at 9:45. Do bouncy castles count?
OK I can see why Wemyss Bay was on your tick list.. Fantastic station. To think I was in Glasgow (on business) and whilst I got to see Gourock and Ardrossan.. I missed Largs and Wemyss... Very... annoyed.
Amazing video, loving the Scottish scenery.
Yes. I've been waiting for this! And I'm glad you can pronounce it right
IBM = I've Been Moved
Brilliant video! You even managed to get my dads house in the video passing Howwood! Great film of wemyss bay...I've not been there Since I was a kid! Xx
Also Glasgow central is lovely too!
Oooh. So wanted to visit Wemyss Bay on last Scottish trip, but run out of time. Great video. Will have to go back.
Sun shine in Scotland!!!!! Love your videos.
D'oh! You get to my neck of the woods and my local stations of Troon and Barassie don't make the cut. Still, you had a nice day in Ayrshire. We do have 'em, occasionally...
That is the old SPTE livery which was very stylish and still looks very good. Good questions around why Aberdeen has very little railways now; but for me, this is the Scottish version of the great north rail south rail divide there is in England
RIP IBM
another great video, and that paddle steamer is super cool!
Hi Geoff and Vicki, What a fantastic station at Wemyss Bay. It's all been said except for 9 3/4 on one ear.
All the 'Bouncy' Castles!
Good to hear the seagulls making a resurgence after their strong showing in the first couple of weeks.
Been following you both for weeks and love your presentations. Had I been in the country, I would have tried to seek you out. My home station is Dumbarton, which I have still to see on your journey.
My god, it's gorgeous.
Brilliant video, I live in Kilwinning and to be honest, I think you've seen more nice weather at that station than I have this year!
At one time (c.1930's), there were huge crowds lining up along that sloping corridor.
I grew up mainly on Bute, and used to go through Wemyss Bay several times a month - daily when I started college. When I moved to Rothesay in 1983, the station was utterly knackered. Like Rothesay, the place began to die a death towards the end of the 1960's, once cheap package holidays abroad became available. The ticket office down the end wasn't there, just some old boarded-up rooms, once used for god knows what. The floor was a bit dodgy, and between the planks you could see the water below you. Up at the top, there was a former taxi office, closed due to lack of demand. No cafe, just an old men's pub. Even the ferries themselves were a state. Thankfully, both Wemyss Bay station and Bute have seen significant investment and revitalization in recent years.
Been looking forward to this video, good job! Homesick now!
10:08 - Largs station really is a shadow of its former self, and now there it is sandwiched between TWO vape shops!
Ray Murray Well it will have been destroyed after the train crash. Largs is a shitehole anyway in my opinion,
Yeah, I remember how it used to be, it's really sad now... there was no need to remove the roofing, I think they just took advantage of the situation.
I'm going to very sad when these videos finish. I'm secretly hoping you'll find an extra set of stations to explore
Called France...
Good grief that's a beautiful station!
If you look at a pre Beeching atlas just east of York you will find 3 great station names, Foggathorpe, Fangfoss and Wetwang!!!! All within 3 or 4 miles. I,m a driver for Virgin and was looking for you at Glasgow and Ed today but just found out you have finished, Well done
IBM station is now closed - the last train ran on December 8th 2018
Too many Neds gathering in the derelict factories drinking Buckfast. Local authorities and Scotrail decided to close the station completely.
Now I want to go to Wemyss Bay.
It's lovely seeing local groups and organisations making use of otherwise unused station facilities and keeping them in bloom. If only it happened at more stations.
Re-watching all of Scotland and just noticed... did I REALLY hear a background BURP at 11:03 or so?!?!?! (Goes well with the shot of IRN-BRU if so...!) 😋
One word- scenery!
Missed you two by exactly 24 hours at Glasgow central. I was there on the 9th before heading to Bristol at 11.
Robbo 13 did you go school or virgin to Bristol?
s125ish XC all the way to Bristol
Ok, by far my favorite!
Skye and Kyle of Lockalsh will be the best scenery of the lot. Can't wait! Looking forward to Thurso too, don't know why. The notice of drunk people, not being allowed is great-should do this during football season too.
The best one yet
Tina Onions - was a Marshall once. There are people who seem to spend their time disliking RUclips videos for no real reason... sad really!
I think it's too easy to focus on the handful of bad things instead of the utter overwhelming avalanche of good ones. Its 553 to 7 - that's almost 99% positive feedback! Or to put it another way, almost everyone who chose to rate this video had good taste!
Was fantastic to meet you both at Kilwinning! Great documentary!
9:43 Another castle for the list on _All the Castles_ .
The 'older' trains are ANCIENT (1979)
10:55 I see that IRN BRU in your hand... The one time in my life I've been to Scotland, that soda may have very well been the strangest part.
Paisley Canal? That's about a 20 minute walk from where I live! If I'd known you guys were gonna be there I'd have stopped by to say hello. :P
You should have gone to the Isles of Cumbrae across from Largs - it's beautiful over there
another great video. visited wemyss bay myself for the first time during the summer. and everything should have a Caledonian mcbrain Wave
bad typing again 😀. everyone should have a mcbrain wave
I totally expect the soundtrack to feature Billy Connolly's "Last train to Glasgow Central" on the final there!
ALL THE BOATS!
Inverkip is my hometown wish I met you while you were in the area :(
Inverkip is pretty.
Amazing video Geoff Vicky wish I meat u and Vicky I live in wemyss bay
Hi, so the Paisley Canal line's been electrified now, yay!! I rode it once, in a clapped out old Class 101 DMU. Yes, Wemyss Bay's gorgeous, and it's a lovely little day excursion from Glasgow Central to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, via train and ferry. There's Zavaroni's cafe near the port there, which I think is still owned by the family of the late singer Lena Zavaroni, who came from there. Another nice "train and boat" run from Glasgow is from Ardrossan Harbour to Brodick on Arran.
Just one more thing Geoff, please don't say you're doing 'All the urinals", now, not all of them!!!
Ian Mcclavin was electrified in 2014 replacing class 156s
Ive been to wemyss bay many times truly beautiful station if only they could put all the tracks back in and double the line all the way to port Glasgow
The older livery is the one employed by Strathclyde passenger transport executive on their supported services
You should do a video on the glasgow subway
ask and you shall receive... geoff has done so
He did on his other channel , Geoff Marshall
That livery is like the old "Blood and Custard" of British Railways in the 1950s.
Going to Scotland next summer
I went on the ferry to Rothesay
At Glasgow u can get a train spotting ticket for 10p but it's only for 1 hour
Port Glasgow (PTG) I live there!
All the urinals !!!
cowscrazy Well, certainly #AllTheCurvedUrinals
At least he didn't mention Penistone this time......
I wish I could have met you at the Largs station - did you see the old turning wheel for the engines as you come in, it is on left left as you approach.
That's the first time I've ever heard someone saying that they were excited about going to ayr
The first boat is the Island Princess and you will address her as such!
NARDINI'S!!!!!
Unfortunately, IBM station is being mothballed in the Dec 18 Timetable change. It is claimed that this was at the request of the Police, as the whole Spango Valley industrial park is now closed down and was suffering problems with anti social behaviour. The only public facility in the park was IBM station, and by closing it, the owners can completely secure the site. All references to it have been removed from the Timetable, and no access will be available, so it’ll be a bit like Newhaven Marine.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as the station is not being closed and it’s likely that Spango Valley will be utilised for housing in future, but as IBM are long gone (now with just a small office facility on the Greenock riverside), i think the name will change when it reopens.
Bogston is my station hahaha yasss
Would have loved to be your taxi as I had visited Largs just that day 😢
Years ago, I went into a fish and chip shop on the front at Gourock. I asked for cod and chips and was told they didn't serve cod. When I asked what type of fish they DID sell, his reply was 'DEAD'. Worst fish &chips I've EVER eaten.....
Pity about the poor fish and chips, but you rarely get cod in Scottish chippies. The Scots prefer haddock.
narabdela The sad thing was when I walked round the corner onto the main street, there was a HUGE fish restaurant that had every type of fish I could ever imagine, and it all looked wonderful! I did have a coffee there though....
Yes, Keith in Scotland the majority of Fish & Chip shops only sell Haddock. There are a few seaside town shops that will offer cod but not many.
Gordon Prentice I didn't really care what it was by that time. I was there doing a video shoot for Alsthom on the first running day of a new train. I'd travelled on it to Gourock, then filmed it leaving. The idea was to have a quick lunch, then film it returning. Unfortunately, two boys activated the emergency stop on its return run, so it was sent back to Glasgow Central before coming back to Gourock, about two hours later than originally planned. If I'd known that was going to happen, I would have explored the town as soon as I arrived, rather than going into the first place I saw.
John Peat It seemed like a good idea at the time! Whatever the fish I was served up with WAS, it was about 1cm thick, and soggy as a bog in a thunderstorm. The chips weren't any better either!😀😬🍽
Paisley canal is my local line. I get on at Mosspark.
Ha my line too. Get on at Hawhead
I was hoping "bouncy castle" but paddle steamer is fine too i guess
You should do All The Ferries.
