Some Might Say - Episode 19, Day 32 - Havenhouse to Cromford

- Опубликовано: 13 дек 2024
- It's Wednesday 7th June, and we start at the least used station in Lincolnshire, and finish on the line to Matlock. Along the way we take a ride on a cablecar, and see Peak Rail - a heritage line. And then, we get to re-create some artwork of a famous Oasis recording ...
You can book to stay in the holiday cottage at Cromford station here: www.uniqueholid... - thanks Ryan!
Have a look at www.allthestati... for more, including a progress map!
Thanks to Steven Francis for the additional music.
ROUTE: Havenhouse - Sleaford -Gainsborough Lea Road - Lincoln - Newart Castle/Rolleston - Matlock Bath - Matlock - Cromford
Seeing Geoff on the floor and Vicky with the wheelbarrow actually moved me to tears. I'm a massive oasis fan!!! You should get a still of that and frame it :-)
Tina Onions - was a Marshall once. Mine too now
I'm not even a big Oasis fan, but seeing them get so excited about being able to re-create the record cover was just delightful.
As someone who never really into English-language songs before, this is where I discovered Oasis.
@Tina Onions is it still your background photo? 😂😂
Think this is actually my favourite moment in the series. Just wall to wall happiness.
"Lincolnshire needs more stations and more trains". As someone who lives in Lincolnshire, I couldn't agree more.
TheSurfinBird same here
I second this.
I think Mablethorpe should be linked to Lincon via Louth
I think - a month in - this project has now gotten fully into its stride: relaxed on-camera presence with its good mix of whimsy, humor and charm. This, and good editing, have brought it all together: a good natured paean to the UK's rail infrastructure, with the harder underlying message that it's something to be valued (and worthy of renaissance.)
That ending was so unexpectedly awesome it actually gave me goosebumps.
Geoff's glee at 12:48 was so infectious. I'm glad that, a month in, you're still just as excited about this project as when you started. It just wouldn't be the same with that genuine enthusiasm.
Bruce Dickinson likes them
Stowage : a place where you put things that you may need to access quickly
Storage : a place where you put things that are not needed so quickly
Or to put it another way, stowage would be somewhere you stow something, not store it.
Is it not just the place where Jonathan Ross keeps his wheelchair?
Loving the little piano rendition of 'Some Might Say' at the end.
phenomenal track
You two need to do All the Heritage Stations next year. I'm going to be volunteering on the Mid-Norfolk Railway, and know the North Norfolk line intimately as well.
You're inspiring me to visit lots of new places & I love how we're getting variations on the theme music.
G: "Where are we?"
V: "Newark Castle"
G: "What do you think that means?"
V: "There's a Newark nearby"
PMSL
is newark castle the only station with castle in its name
Nope! There are also stations called:
Castle Bar Park (in west London)
Castle Cary (in Somerset)
Dunrobin Castle (in the Scottish Highlands)
Elephant & Castle (in south London)
Rowlands Castle (in Hampshire)
KasabianFan44 There A Station Called Newcastle As Well In The Tyne And Wear
KasabianFan44 Didn't Jasper Carrott have something to say about "Newarks" too?
Ryan Gordon
That's kind of cheating 😂 there are more like that as well, such as Castleford
Brilliant video thank you from New Zealand
So RUclips recommended your channel this week and now going all your videos. Absolutely loving the way you bring to life the little idiosyncrasies we casually take for granted not just on the trains, stations and railway but just life in general. Such a cool brilliant adventure. Can we come up to the Highlands to see you arrive at your final station?
Cromford and Whatstandwell are my two local stations from my home. I am glad you covered them in great details. And glad you covered Matlock too.
Yes!!!! Trains and Oasis?! Life couldn't get any better! Love you guys x
Two years late coming to this... but it gets better with every video, and the first one was brilliant! I don't think I could've stood the suspense in real time - at least this is more like opening an advent calendar all at once! Can't wait for the rest... :-)
I'm almost sad so few people have seen these. But happy I've stumbled across a gem. Thanks guys
Nice touch with the Some Might Say segway into the AtS theme at the end!
And as for "it's just like the Emirates Airline, only with passengers!" Dude! Hahahahahahaha!!
Poo
Surprised and delighted to see Rolleston. My dad was signalman there many years ago when it was a junction for Southwell.
I love Matlock bath. The artwork on the station building of the sprinter in the countryside. And the cable car ride is lovely. Amazing views.
This channel is a great example of what happens when you step outside your door. Yes, there's a plan. Yes, there's skill involved. But the best moments of this channel happen simply because you were there. I love travel, and trains and seeing people out there enjoying life. This is what makes youtube so great - too bad the "suits" don't get it on "regular" TV.
Best episode yet, your lovely charm and chemistry + trains and our wonderful country is a joy to watch.
Cromford is one of my sponsored stations, it is one of my favourite areas in the UK and I used to love going on holiday to there. I agree with the train ride between Derby and there being beautiful, I haven't been on the train to Matlock Bath but I have walked along the river to there.
Some might say this was made them pretty teary eyed ..it sure did me
Great stuff as always... totally agree with Geoff about the "tiny nothing stations"... good shots of castle and canal lock in motion too, Vicki 😃👍
ps favourite station name so far, perhaps ever, is definitely WHATSTANDWELL !
p.p.s. Love Steve's music while you're at the Heights of Abraham!!! (and I had never seen or heard of that, so an awesome new thing to learn, thanks guys!!!)
Near Chester Cathedral (a bit further on foot from the station), there is a staircase of locks on an old canal, which goes under a railway. Unfortunately, when we were there, no trains ran over that line because of engineering...
+barvdw YES! I've been there many times and it's a great confluence of engineering!! Plus +geofftech there's a geocache nearby!
Rolleston didn't used to be a nothing station. It was once known as Rolleston Junction and you changed there for trains to Southwell and Mansfield, albeit a long time ago. The locks are on the River Trent, that flows past the castle, Hence it being called Newark-on-Trent.
I read about you both in yesterday's online Guardian Australia 12/06/2017, and your All Stations expedition. The article also mentioned Michael Portillo's journeys, which I watch on SBS. Yours have the huge advantage of a total absence of Portillo pomposity. Keep up your cheerfulness.
12:46 that's the most adorable thing I've seen today
Thankyou Geoff, Vicky and the team for the great vids, love watching "all the stations"
😊
Another brilliant episode, keep on going guys!
Another great video Geoff & Vicky. I eagerly await every new episode.
I have previously mentioned in a post that i am a Driver for SouthEastern and your adventures around the UK have made me want to make more use of the free Train travel that i am privileged to have.
we can recommend Cornwall, for starters!
The sleeper to Penzance maybe?
I can only recommend strongly to use those privileges, they are worth a ton, and the UK is a great country to tour by train, there's some great scenery outside of the window, lively cities, quaint (yes!) villages... And if you have them, use those privileges on the continent as well, they're great. A Belgian railwayman.
My favourite video of the series so far! Hopefully catch you guys at some point when you're around and about Leeds!
I use the footbridge in Lincoln and I find it extremely useful especially when my anxiety flares up
when the footbridge floods? heavens, climate change must be getting worse
well I use it all the time even if there is a massive puddle. I hate waiting in a crowd of people and sometimes you're waiting at the level crossing for 20 mins but it's your opinion
Some 1 direction lyric if it was me then I would
The Unseen English Countryside is Drop Dead Gorgeous- who knew.
There is something beyond description about the “Tiny Stations”. Dan; you knocked it out of the park on this package, showing an artistic flair not often see in industrial videos (!!) Remarkable sense of Timing Demonstrated. Vicki; Born Actor -playing off of Geoff makes the Chemistry Golden can see the relationship. Regards from a Film Guy.
Brilliant! As always, brilliant. Great little gem there at he Some Might Say location. Top man, Brian!
My grandparents used to live not far from Matlock. The park there has a boating lake with little motor boats. 10-year-old me was very happy.
Also, Whatstandwell no fall down.
EDIT: Oh, and something that may be of slightly more interest to this audience; the park also has a narrow-gauge railway that runs in a straight line for maybe 200 yards, and then reverses back to the start again. Once again, 10-year-old me was thrilled.
Watching the whole thing a second time now. This is so good.
Watching this for the 200th time and still love it 😊❤️
This is one of the best parts of the series. I really want to go to that part of the country now!
David Who Yes the Peak District is lovely. Just wait until you get to Wales folks, and the Scottish Highlands....
The most inspiring video, so far. There are so many amazing places to visit in this country. Thanks to you, both, I'm definitely going to go to the places you visited today. Ohhh... and "sockets", Geoff. EMT have fitted USB sockets. Not plugs :)
Or better still, USB ports.
This country still has some pretty stations in some wonderful countryside. keep on going guys.
One of my fav episodes this one
Also the EMT next stop board on the train is the same as the GWR 158s on the Portsmouth to Cardiff services
Storage is the act of placing material or other supplies on board. Stowage relates to the act of securing those items stored in such a manner that they do not shift or move during transit.
The canal through Newark happens to be the River Trent!
Glorious video thank you
Fun fact: Sir David Attenborough not only opened the (very!) nearby Attenborough Nature Reserve in the '60s, but returned again when they opened a visitor centre!
The Nature Reserve and its visitor centre are both visible from the railway, just west of Attenborough station.
A lovely video and the music fits beautifully. Well done!
i absolutely love trains and luring all about all the lest used stations
"Some of the Stations is a program we're doing next year." Geoff, I'm holding you accountable to this.
What a shame, it’s now been 2-3 years 😪
You two remind me of me mum and dad. We would spend a ton of money, spend many days travelling, and go literally to the other end of the country, only for dad to say "ok let's go home, that's enough", and dad would wait somewhere while mum and I went and explored the city/place.
going to castle and geoff heading to tiny platform, very indepdent, vicki looked like just shot off with excitement
Thanks for visiting Rolleston.
Very nice!
I thought the lady at 3:55 waiting with the pink-paper-wrapped bunch of flowers had a twin at Lincoln! I rewound and realised that she had got on the train with you at 4:22 and also got off at Lincoln (4:57). Given that she doesn't look very pleased to be in the background she/you did a good job of getting her in the film twice! 🤣
Best video yet, maybe because you have to been to my favourite places when I was a child, and also where I grew up. Vicki is right though, Lincolnshire needs more railways. My nearest station growing up was Grantham, and to go and see my friends in nearby towns I would have to get two or three trains just to go 20 miles or so, plus having to drive to Grantham from my village, so it is easier to drive, or get buses.
we learned also from our time in Lincolnshire that it's one of the counties in England with the fewest motorways? and thus has the highest number of road accidents, a sad statistic. needs better transport links all round, perhaps!
All The Stations Blame the A17, easily the worst road in the country!
Shropshire only has 1 motorway, the M54
Hey Geoff there is beautiful scenery between Stroud and Kemble. You will pass a small village called Chalford and that used to have a station
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalford_railway_station
I remember trainspotting here in 2012 and there was only a b&B in the area
Hope that piano version of 'Some Might Say' at the end is available to download at some point, I am loving it!
No its ATS theme
7:21 That is the River Trent.
7:25 and, with the trick editing, that is the quickest I have ever seen a boat leave a lock :-)
I currently live in Lincoln and people STILL don't use the bridge and just wait for the trains to come by, both where you showed and by the front of the university.
totally agree Lincolnshire is in dire need of more trains and new lines. thank Mr beeching Lincolnshire suffered so much I wish mablethorpe never lost its train line or hornsea
It's always the same. You wait ages for a cable car and then three come along at once.
Damn! I've just noticed that somebody made the exact same comment!
Hello Geoff still love your channel and plz do more facts about London under ground it was so good . And I live In Glasgow so I don't see the London under ground much but my brother lives there
that level crossing in Lincoln I have been to and had to wait for 4 trains (when I was on holiday there)
Aw, no mention of the Flat Crossing at Newark? Apparently the last one in England, I would have thought that was worth at least a mention :)
I really enjoy watching "All The Stations". The videos are always well made, informative, and entertaining. Was just wondering to myself how long it would take to do an "All The Stations", if all the lines and stations closed by Dr, Beeching where still in existence?
A good deal longer that's for sure.
Now there's a challenge, for someone out there with a fetish for old railway timetables to work out the answer!!!
The first phase of Beeching cuts was around 55% of stations and 30% of route miles. I'd hazard a guess that before the second and first cuts the project would have taken around 24 weeks.
Sadly not all the EMT 158's have those sockets or the destination boards - very happy when I see that I'm one with the sockets
Geoff, any history on when Cromford was single tracked? As a Yank, I'm in awe of the rail services you have available, yet dismayed to see notable portions downsized from their former glory. Cheers!
The branch was singled in May 1969.
Norbiton Flyer That was your 'hack and slash' period, right? In the States (and Canada), we got it slowly after Amtrak Day (1 May 1971). The public purpose of Amtrak was to divest money-losing passenger operations from the railroads and nationalize services, but secretly, to eventually shut down all passenger services and be rid of them. Fortunately, they haven't killed all the trains, but compared to what was running on Amtrak Day, today's services are a shadow of what once was, to include on-board services. Consider, if this series were done in the States, Geoff and Vicki would have covered the entire country and be finished already.
If you compare to what had been running before the advent of Amtrak, there was even more axed before than after. I'm reading 'When The Railroad Leaves Town' as my bedtime story, and the number of states that had not one, but multiple lines through them, which have no Amtrak service at all any more, is just baffling.
Compared to that, the UK isn't doing too bad, I'd say, yes, Beeching has been a little bit too enthusiastically trimming stations and lines, but the network it still possesses is nothing to sneeze at, and often, service levels aren't that bad either, on the contrary, many are better than they have been for years.
I've been to the heights of Abraham, and i forgot where they where or what they where called (it was quite the road trip) , so thanks for the reminder
I'm treating this video as a birthday present as it was recorded on my birthday. I love the look of Matlock Bath and Cromford - they're on my list of places to visit now!.
I can only thing the thumbs down are from people who didn't see a shot of their home station as there's no reason to dislike these videos!
Utterly lovely!
Please please please do all the canals next year!
How sweet.
Probably someone has mentioned it by now, but using Cancer treatment recovery periods (no treatments at weekends) to catch up on stuff. Mr Whitwick would surely tell you lots about the Cromford and High Peak railway (sadly closed) if you ask him nicely, lol
Brilliant ending! Great video :D
I go on that Matlock branch quite regularly from Nottingham, it is great for views etc.
Hi Geoff,
I thought you looked a bit familiar when I saw you. I was the guy in the cream chinos at 11:18 and blue bag filming the 20 and Jennifer depart from peak rail.
would have spoken to you but you looked very focused haha
I love the piano work at the end!
Have you considered doing a series of all the steam/heritage railways Geoff?
5:37 Can't wait for "Some of the Stations" next year!
those chairs look comfortable . thunbs up for the usb ports
I go on peak rail every now and then it's cool
I've enjoyed all the videos so far, but that was one of the best. I have to say, Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham look like good places to visit. Keep up the good work. BTW it was good to see you two featured in The Guardian (www.theguardian.com/uk-news/shortcuts/2017/jun/12/meet-couple-visiting-every-railway-station-britain).
2:41 is a hecking good station.
+Casconium *CRINGE*
AutoGamerz and here we meet again, autobus.
+Unjinz Ohey, lol
AutoGamerz Says you.
What the Heckington?!
I went on the heights of abraham with me parents as a kid once. Don't remember a thing. Must go again someday.
You definitely do All the Heritage Railway Stations next year! :)
Jonathan Bibbings Probably harder to do and fund because they aren't located that close together.
Emirates cable car (transport link) odd concept, yet I can often get a pod on my own. :)
This one is for urban explorers and trainspotters/enthusiasts because of Sleaford Bass Maltings and Newark Castle
I'll be waiting for, "Some of the Stations."
Here in Devon we have so many stations which people hardly ever use (can't see why they're open myself)
Quite weak to take the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham. I walked all the way up (and even higher than that) earlier this year. :-)
Marten Kats They only have so much time if they decide to alight.
I'm just looking forward to seeing you in my 'neck of the woods' in Wigan. :)
Although knowing my luck, you'll be there on a day when I'm working and I'll end up missing you. :/
did you manage to get that tea (or coffee?) I love this series....maybe next year all the station cafes? :P
You could off walked to fiskerton station as it about a 5-10 minutes walk from Rolleston station and did you do fiskerton station?
but then Geoff wouldn't have got the train from Rolleston, and so wouldn't have done Rolleston station.
All The Stations So do I understand correctly that you aren't both doing all the stations?
Can't wait until you get to my neck of the woods
love the cable car's
While in Cromford did you have time to explore the High Peak railway inclines? If not, it's definitely worth going back. There's a catch-pit at the bottom with the remains of a steam-era 10-ton coal wagon that ran away down the 1-mile 1:8(?) rope incline and reached 140mph+ when the rope broke. Also a very nice walk along the old railway formation to Wirksworth where you can travel on the heritage line back to Duffield.

limeyfox unfortunately they did not have time to do so, bit I did extol to them the virtues of all of this area with regards to railway/canal history. The DVL has so many connections to fab days out, doesn't it?
Karen Pinchbeck One of my earliest memories is a family day trip to Matlock Bath. Years later my Dad and I cycled the Pennine Bridleway and explored the high peak route, really worth visiting
limeyfox yes the whole area is gorgeous. I am, however, massively biased, being a Derbyshire lass! 😉
My boys oasis making the video, legendary single
Did anyone else noticed the person standing on the footbridge above Cromford Station at the end?
The East Midlands trains livery and Marquette is very very similar to south West trains
Rolleston sounds like a good home for the Rolling Stones.
