- Made even more special by exposure blending? The viaduct from Knaresborough Castle is stunning and was voted one of the best views in Yorkshire* and what a location for railway photography, stunning at any time of day but made more memorable by the warm summer evening and a fantastic sunset.
A short railway photography video starting at Knaresborough railway station, taking in the station, tunnel, signal box and semaphore signals, the signal box is especially unusual, being built onto the end of a row of terrace houses.
I spent an hour watching the sun go down, taking a number of photos to create an exposure blended final image.
The three images are:
1) The train 1/320 sec f/4.0 ISO1000 25mm Time 20:41
2) The scene as the base image 1/15 sec f/7.1 ISO100 25mm Time 20:48
3) The night lights 4.0sec f/7.1 ISO100 25mm Time 21:33
The final result is a Photoshop exposure blend of the three images.
Firstly, using image 2 as the base image, adjusting the exposure then merging in the train from image 1 to create a high-quality image, and finally, using image 3 to blend in the night lights.
The trains seen in the video if anyone is interested are:
170476 2C41 1911½ York to Leeds Due Knaresborough 19:37 Actual 19:50
170477 2C68 1859 Leeds to York Due Knaresborough 19:44 Actual 19:52
170478 2C45 2011½ York to Leeds Due Knaresborough 20:36 Actual 20:41
170475 2C74 2006 Leeds to York Due Knaresborough 20:51 Actual 20:51
170476 2C70 2029 Leeds to York Due Knaresborough 21:14 Actual 21:26
*In a 2015 poll conducted by the Dalesman magazine, the viaduct came at number 23 out of the 50 best views in Yorkshire.

Appreciated, John, I’ll do my best.
I visited Knaresborough once and really enjoyed my visit, brilliant captures from the area and that final photo was epic
Many thanks Simon, its a lovely line with still a scattering of Semaphores, I’ve a day out photographing the line between Knaresborough and York planned for the autumn - so let's see what I can make of that.
Another nice video and a timely reminder that I need to get myself back to Knaresborough.
Thanks Rob, yes, its on my list to return, I’d like to follow the line to York - probably make a day of it.

Awesome, thank you! Hope you find something to entertain you.
I knew the one coming out the tunnel with the posies was going to be a great photo before you put it upon screen , as are all the others . 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, a great spot to explore, think I'll be going back.
Ive had my pc down for a week and your film was a test to see if i had put all the back in the correct place and i have. I will have to take a further look at this exposure blending, great film as ever and many thanks for doing it.
Excellent Peter, glad the PC is back up and running.
Just discovered your channel really enjoyed this video looking forward to more
Awesome, thank you Paul, I hope you find something of interest coming up.
Hi Andrew
What a great final photo
Not an expert in photoshop, tend to use Lightroom classic, but you inspired me to learn a bit more
Keep up the great work
Cheers from Andrew , born and grew up in Lancs and now live in 🇨🇦 Cheers
My pleasure Andrew, the majority of my work in in Lightroom classic on the Mac, its only for these merges and stitching images that I use Photoshop. I’m a Yorkshire Lad, who only occasionally ventures to the other side of the Pennines.
Great one Andrew, perhaps another Photoshop video is due? Regards Peter
Thanks Peter, I’ll have to see about that, theres a few on RUclips covering the concept.
Night time snaps, well done mate 😎
Was the light added by the viaduct all photo shop? Totally synthetic or was it just improving what was already there?
Many thanks, the light on the viaduct and town is all natural, the lights came from the last image taken in darkness. It's the Photoshop process of merging the day and night images together to create the illusion.
@@AndrewShenton it looks absolutely brilliant mate, very well done there ❤️
Impressive pics Andrew. Such a beautiful location as well. Thanks for sharing. All the best. Ben
Many thanks Ben, yes it really is a lovely spot, the area has the feel of another age.

Many thanks , I hope you enjoy yourself, theres plenty to do and see.
Always enjoy your videos, thanks for posting! Excellent work as per usual! That last composition is incredible.
Thank you very much James, I do enjoy finding a location to work with the lighting at dusk.
Love Knaresborough! Have taken my own shots there in the past but not quite like yours! Lovely sunset image Andrew, thank you for sharing the evening with us!
Many thanks Steve, yes its a lovely spot for a summer evening, if I'd gone earlier in the summer I might have got the sunset over the viaduct.
Superb video as always Andrew, bringing out the best of the railway at this splendid town in Yorkshire.
Many thanks, Andy, worth another visit, even if just to hunt out the remaining semaphores.
Just caught up with this what a lovely place Knaresborough is. Great video again.
Many thanks Robert, a very nice location for a summer evening.
Superb shots Andrew, surely that’s a competition winner?!
Many thanks, Mark, I was pleased how the last one processed, you never know until back home processing these images how they'll work.
