Brings back so many memories... Doing your laundry in port is an excellent point. Money managing is another good one of yours. Going with a buddy is a good idea even if you don't plan to get stupid drunk. Enjoy yourself but never let your guard completely down...

Doyinsola Philips I literally didn't do much..woke up at 0700, clean until 1000, and then liberty all day. You're also off on weekends lol but I'm on my ship now and it's pretty busy

I took MWR tours a lot. You can get a true feel for local culture if you take the right tours. Great video. I didn't really begin to enjoy port visits until I quit drinking. My first port visit was in 79 and the culture was different. I'm lucky I didn't kill myself I made most of the mistakes you are taking about avoiding. After deployment #1. I got sober and things really improved for me. Do they still call it Cinderella Liberty?

I am a nondrinker or substance abuser, totally straight individual so when I got to my first command in 75, there were some trust issues. My coworkers thought I was a narc or something. Eventually they began trusting me and on our first deployment, I was able to prove my worth. I became the "sheep dog". I kept muggers and pick pockets away from my buddies as I herded their drunk butts from bar to bar and back to the ship as needed. In return, they bought my food and drink while out and about.
The tours you mentioned are great. My favorite was in Hong Kong. It ended a a floating Jumbo Shrimp Restaurant that had some of the best food I have ever eaten. My tip is learn about the countries you visit. Explore their culture, history and foods. When you show your interest in the locals, they generally much friendlier. I know I like talking about my country, they like talking about their's, usually.
One of the coolest places I went to was Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan. It was very interesting and my friend and I were very careful to be very respectful. We didn't want to draw a lot of attention towards us. He was about 6ft3 and black. I'm 5ft10 and white. No they didn't notice us at all. We didn't cause any international incidents and had a good time. The best part was there wasn't another sailor to be seen until we got back to Port. It was a truly unique experience.
Your experience in the Navy can be as good or as bad as you want it to be. A small bit of effort goes a long way.

I think a great tip is to find an experienced sailor on your ship and ask him what’s good with the port

If you are going to a foreign port, use an app called duolingo, it can help you learn the language.

Just remember. There are people in the Navy that will circumvent Pms. 3M. Gmt. DC They will pull rank on you and try to get out of it.. Try to keep it fair. When I was in. My Leading Petty officer a sighn the work to the people he did not like.. And let his friends get out of it.. So they never get spot check on it. Or call on it.. If some body does that to you. You go to The Command Master Chief and he will investigate. That's how you get them fire for it. And they will not get promoted over you. Remember keep it fair. Its got be done. Some times you're a dysfunctional chain of command. That's why you have to go to the command master chief And get help to fix it. .. All hands are responsible for PMS . 3 m. DC. GMT. Somebody does it. Somebody supposed to check it. And then somebody check it again to make sure it's right. It can not be the same person. A lot time the Boss do not know what equipment is. All hands are responsible from E1 to O 6

Advice: DO NOT wear a cap if you go inside any establishment featuring 'ladies of the night' and 'ceiling experts'. They will steal your cap and you won't walk out of there without them 'rendering services' to you. Also if a very good looking lady sits down next to you at a bar and seems interested in you, keep your hormones in check because she's an expert at getting you to buy drinks for her. (The bar usually inflates the prices as they have their own deals worked up for this sham.)
