- On today's Episode of Saving Silverback, we start the bodywork process on our 1986 Foxbody Mustang GT by getting everything masked off for sanding! We plan on redoing all the black trim on the car to really bring it back to life!

SEM trim black is what you need for all the trim. Sem paint looks better than regular flat black in my opinion.

85-86 cars use a charcoal gray originally not black. SEM has the matching OE color 39153.
3M Red scotch brite pads (07447), bulldog plastic trim adhesion, and SEM trim black paint (39143). Good work so far guys!!
That 80 grit might be a little too abrasive huh? I agree with you, the scotch brite pads works a lot better and the SEM trim paint makes it look like new and its a little bit forgiving if you mess up

For the hood vynal you could try the 3m rubber wheel that goes on the end of a drill, should work and make it 100x easier
Get the black trim paint. It's more of a satin but it will flex with the rubber. Mask off the decal and look into the decal removal tool that attaches to a drill.
This thing would look awesome with some black cobra reps or black wheels in general
It's gonna be a procedure but worth it. Just to help with some small nooks and crannies get some red scotch scuff pads to use and make sure you use plastic adhesive for your paint on the plastic will help in the long run and get a automotive cleaner for a good clean surface and the finner the abrasive you use the cleaner the paint will lay out and look for acouple tips. Keep up the work!👍
All of this is solid ESPECIALLY detailed cleanup before the plastic adhesive or a good plastic primer either or but it will save you time in the long run.

Just a suggestion when you're doing the "work" part of a video like sanding. Just put music to it instead of listening to the sandpaper.

I just got done restoring my 89 lx. Sem trim black is the best. Both the front and rear window trim can be removed and painted off the car. In addition, some of the door trim. While you have the cowl off, you should clean out that entire area as far as you can reach very corrosion bad area. I used 180, 400, 600 and then painted. Great start.

Derek use the decal wheel eraser to remove the hood’s black GT decal, it’ll save SOOOO much time & no heating needed!
Use 3m adhesive remover for the stripes and a rubber putty blade to get off the stripes

Make sure you prime all of it first and then hit it with SEM trim black paint

You need to get in contact with a man named Hector Vega on Facebook about headlights for this car. He makes a really nice set of 4x6 lights that are adjustable and look amazing. Like what you're doing with the car keep up the hard work.

Just one more time to insure you need SEM paint. Bulldog adhesion promoter on all plastics and rubber. And you don't have to go to the yellow. You are just looking to scuff the surface. Don't bare down so hard. Love that car brings back so many memories

I took auto Collison in highschool, and watching you guys sand was a little cringy. Looks like you guys were racing. You should have watched a quick youtube tutorial first, so you got a nice even sand. Wet sanding the plastic with 800 would have been fine, even red or green scuff pads would have done the job, you dont need to go to bare plastic to get primer to adhear to the plastic, just scuff it up and clean it well and use a sandable etching primer. Rubber wheel for removing pinstriping will work amazing, they smell like pancakes too when they warm up, to shine the flat hood your best bet would be to just clear it, or respray it. . Love the vids, im a foxbody fan, first car was a 91 LX 5.0 5spd.
Also paint the cheese grater trim panel next to the quarter windows silver, or replace it with a trim that looks better, not a fan of the cheese grater style
Do not use newspaper it will stick to the car got to a body supply and get brown paper or use plastic sheets you use to paint with
I was waiting for someone else to comment this! An I 100% agree don't use newspaper the paint will most likely bleed threw
I did this w an 82 IROC-Z about 12 years ago. Worked on it for about 2-3 years before letting go for not having money. Good I wish I had that back to keep messing with

Back when I had mine in 2001, I used a die grinder and took the whole damn hood decal off through paint and all down to bare metal. I initially tried the right way but it was so old and baked in there it was too much of a fight. I miss mine. I actually found a white one that I’m looking at tomorrow for 13k

You should put LED square headlights in the car just like miata owners do with round lights from jeeps

Use the best spray max 2k hot rod satin black what we use for our builds also make sure to primer your parts and get some good cleaner too you need any advice let me know be glad to help.

180 is a little to aggressive maybe the 400 you had would be better and wetsanding works better on plastic and some red scotch Brite
Get the body / bumper trim that goes all the way around the car painted body color (silver)
SEM trim paint, remove the hood decal (a must), and then have the car wrapped!!
On the raw plastic you are gonna want adhesion promoter be for u paint
The make trim paint just for that, wouldn’t use just any black paint. The front cover is all one piece.
Great video guys huge foureye fan I own one, the trims around the headlights actually are supposed to stay Chrome I don't know how h stock you want to keep the car, other than that this thing is going to be fire when it's finished.

Well i mean blue2v needs a cowl hood and these foxbodies look amazing with cowl hoods so maybe this could be a good opportunity to order some cowl hoods for the two

I would also use semigloss black not flat black, the flat black always fades and looks dirty

This car needs some raidals like blue
Your gonna need plastic to cover the paint. Don't use newspaper. It will blend through the paper. Find an automotive paint supply and get the plastic there.

there is actually trim paint that the parts store sells it looks just like factory i think it would be better than the flat black!

Instead of paint spraying the trim. I really recommend you to look into SOLUTION FINISH BLACK TRIM RESTORER!

Is go back over that 180 with a 320 and then a primer before spaying it. You’ll probably be fine with the route you guys are going being flat black, but the steps I mentioned will make it pristine! 👌🏻 I’ve worked in a body shop for 26 years, so I hope my advice helps!! 600 grit for that. Then go over with 800 grit. Your gonna leave lines.
Hope everything goes well. Usually doesn't.
Red scotchbrite pad for sanding. 180 is too harsh and will leave sanding marks in your final product without laying down primer first. I would go back over everything you sanded with 220 then 320 and finish with 400 or a red scotchbrite pad.The moldings are not faded down the side of the car. They are supposed to be charcoal grey from the factory. As with all the trim for 85 and 86. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE BLACK. I would not paint the side moldings or even sand them. They are made out of a different material than the rest of the moldings If you want them fresh looking clean them with tuffstuff or some laquer thinner on a rag.
How much did you pay? The motor sounds good. I guess I have to watch the flick.
