  • 1987 Ford Mustang GT build video by The Straight Pipes. The 1987 Ford Mustang GT is putting down 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from a 5L V8. At $57,500 CAD, would you take it over a used Maserati, a REALLY used Ferrari, a Pontiac Fiero Lamborghini Kit Car?

Some 4.10 gears, and a stiff wall ET drag will get you down into the low 12s! Just make sure you tow it there so you don’t end up stranded if the stock 28 spline axles give up on you. Beautiful car brother!

I think the very clear next step is skip the Nitrous and go straight for the supercharger, Kenne Bell makes a great 2.1L Flowzilla supercharger that slaps on and will add an extra 150hp for a relatively reasonable price of about $4000. Good luck finding one though, all the old foxbody guys bought those things out in bulk back in the early 2000's.

I owned one of these brand new in 88 and I would not spend 50K on one to make it this nice . I Realize it's Canadian $ but that's a lot of money for this platform IMO . people make drag car's but if you weren't alive when they were new I don't know why you would want one . I miss some of my cars from my youth but my 1988 5.0 MT GT is NOT one of them .
Interesting cars as they signalled that the HP wars were back on and that the 70s awful car period was over and muscle and fast cars were coming back . The Buick GN really proved that and then the 98 SS Camaro and Terminator Mustang made it clear the war was on , but beyond that I have little love for the 3 fox bodies I owned beyond thinking they were OK at the time for a NEW CAR after the malaise . My Mom had an 87 Vert that I took over 130 which was its max speed I believe ( took forever to reach ) and then when I slowed down I destroyed the brakes in one high speed stop , they are / were pretty rudimentary cars with DRUMS in the rear .
I DID like the seats and the interior was actually nicer then Mustangs that came after it it that were gross .

Ordered my 1988 5.0 notchback Mustang LX on Dec 23, 1987. Picked it up in February, 1988. Had exactly one option on it: 5.0. no A/C, no cruise, and the radio delete. $10,500 USD . Put a set of Flowmasters and tires on it and off to the races.. Thanks for this blast from the past. You got me thinking now of a fun project 'Stang. Your car is sick!
EDIT: Also just found the paperwork for the 1982 5.0 notchback that started it all: Ordered this one in March, 5,1982: 5,0 option was $452, A/C $676, also ordered T-tops (all the rage back then!) for $521. Even power steering ($190) and power brakes ($93) were extra (!). Loaded it with cruise control ($155) and AM/FM cassette, w/premium sound ($289). Ended up at $9,200 for the car. BTW, that is equal to $27,866 in USD today.

Wrong. I had one. AC was not a standard option to have to order without it, or cruise for that matter. Lots were full of LX 5.0 manual mustangs with no ac or cruise, just pick a color. They had cheap crappy radios to yank out. Change the gears, pulleys and a few other cheap simple. That price you listed is close to what the dealer paid.

honestly I couldnt tell you why but the Fox body is still my favorite style. dont get me wrong I think the new ones are absolute gorgeous but there is just something about the fox. it helps too that the Notch back was so unbelievable ugly in comparison I suppose. Also on a side note you should try the Flowmaster 20 series for mufflers , hands downs the best muffler sounds ever for mustangs.

I've been trying to get it from under him so I could at least fix it up and get her back on the road, but he ain't going for it and I can't blame him 😂. I go back there and keep it clean and pop the hood and just stare at the 5.0 just thinking. Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)

Cool car and build guys, but holy sheeet can i think of ALOT better cars to buy or smarter things to do with that $50k, but then again you really didnt spend your own money soooo yea. I get it you had alot of sponsors and "help" (my question is what did any of these companies that "helped" gain/benefit from doing this? Did you offer like free bjs from the wife? lol jk). Idk it seems like alot of work/time/money and they didnt get paid a dime for it? I know (atleast a sane man) wouldnt be dumping this much into a rusted old 5.0 out of their very own pocket. So imho this kinda makes the whole build like not really plausible in the "real world" and a low key flex...

Great video. I built one a little better than yours for less than $5,000. I just started the channel. Fox Daddy RUclips Channel. You are absolutely right , a person better know what they are doing. This car belongs to my son. He got it when he was 13 three years ago. We paid $700 Zero rust. The car is show quality restoration. I love these things. I love that we are all building them again. Anyways love your car and channel. Take care.

I hope you did all the sub from connectors and bracing. The fox chassis are like cooked spaghetti stock. Impressive you were able to find unbroken stock seats from that era the driver inboard seat backs always break off. Looks cool.

Most Fox bodies have too many stress cracks all over....especially the 5.0 cars. Your best bet is to buy a 4 cylinder and engine swap it. You can still find a few out there. IMO the hot ticket right now is the New Edge. Essentially the same car, a little better built and still super cheap. I am doing a 2001 6 cylinder right now to an LS Turbo. Shooting for around 600-700hp. A project you can do easily under $10k if you have the skills. I bought the car in good shape for $1000 running, and I sold the cats for $600. Ready to go project for $400. :D

@@julianbryant1115 I'm in NC and bought right before the car craziness. I am sure it will die down and they will be there again. Nice thing is they show up at our local Pull A Part all the time. Parts are still plentiful and cheap.
