- I found this video in my VH vault and decided to post it. I know when this song was recorded it was a difficult time in the Van Halen camp but, despite this the guitar sounds amazing. I had the opportunity to see VH on this tour (Best of Both Worlds). Again, despite the friction between Eddie and Sammy, the concert was awesome. I will always be a Van Halen fan, RIP Eddie.

I met Eddie in 1991 at an AA meeting at Saint Joe’s Medical Center in Burbank. I had just moved there from Palm Springs into a sober living house. After the meeting his sponsor took me up to the third-floor and he walked right up to me and said welcome to Los Angeles Steve. I gave him a book when he received his NA 30 day chip. He gave me a huge hug. And look at me and said Steve right ? Yeahhhhh !!! I saw him a couple times at the musician meeting and we went out into the back patio area and smoked a cigarette just me and him. Talked about recovery. Everybody was looking at us. It sounds weird but I think it was my 15 minutes. I loved that man. Not only as a musician, but is a human being. I didn’t see him after that. But the memory was burned into my conscience. I kept an eye on him through the media. I saw him in 2015 at the Concord Pavilion. I managed to squeeze really close up to the front and I was watching him on stage sober with Wolfie. It brought a tear to my eye knowing that he was okay now. I was hoping he would recognize me. 24 yrs later. No Way. Anyway I was so brokenhearted to hear that he was suffering. And when he passed we definitely lost one of God‘s children. I hope one day I’ll see him again. RIP MY FRIEND !!! STEVE. I miss you man !!
Wow! That brought tears to my eye's. I love EVH too, since1979. That story is beautiful. Thank you for sharing that.
That was a cool story. 😊
This is a sad video of a man who is not only in alot of pain, but deep into his addictions. So far gone its a miracle he came back and stayed with us until 2020.
I would say that everyone he hurt during this time should consider the fact that it wasn't Edward saying those things it was the drugs and alcohol.
Still it can be hard to forgive some of the horrible shit addicts do.
I was disgusted with Ed in 2004 for the rat shit performance he did when I saw him, I know an addict when I see one. Now that I'm older I have more compassion. He was going thru hell and wasn't the kind of person who asked for help.
Reat in peace Ed. Thanks for writingcthe music of my life.
Painful to watch EVH like this, but he was in the thick of it here.
Not for nothing, but stop making excuses for his behavior. Somewhere he has to be accountable for his actions.
He ran off Roth, Hagar, Anthony and even his wife.
A 5 year period that real fans could do without remembering. The fact that they aren’t recording this live really says something. Drugs make good people behave badly. I’m glad Ed had time to heal after this.
Man I miss this music. Both versions of VH kicked ass I dont care what anyone says . But this video reminds me of Ed's demons . This is when he went off the rails. Sam said in RED that if you see the samurai hair on Ed , all hell is gonna break loose and not musically. RIP boss, I grew up listening to you shred and miss it dearly.
This is the first time I’ve ever seen this video. Love it. Just breaks my heart seeing Edward in this shape. I did enjoy seeing more Alex though. It’s cool to see the behind the scenes stuff. RIP Edward. He means so much to so many.
The book RED is a smear campaign against the Halen Bros . He never mentioned how much Konami paid him for using his Can't Drive 55 song for the Ridge Racer Type 4 videogame TV commercial YET he bitches about the Halen Bros selling songs for TV commercials . And it's not Ray Daniels fault for Sammy leaving the band . Sam is to blame for trying to boss Eddie around and whatever he said to piss Eddie off . And Sammy became a rat and a snitch for what he put in his book about Ed's drug abuse . You don't rat on your friends for any reason YET he did . I don't care how true or false his complaints about Ed are , it's still a private thing . If he pulled the same crap on you you should feel the same way .
the answer to the question of Sam or Dave is always "Eddie"!
That book is a great read for sure, and yeah.. not the finest moment for either incarnation of the band... but man I wanted it to work...
My thoughts exactly. Ed was still a genius on the guitar, but he looked awful.... and I guess was going downhill in his personal life as well at this time. Drugs are a killer. Wish he could have stayed clean and we would likely still have him rocking and Standing on Top of the World!
Other guitar players are emulated, no one can do it with Ed,he was on another level,RIP MASTER 😔🕊⚘
Damn Skippy!
Im still waiting & wanting a EVH Tribute Tour. Will be making a video talking about that upload Tomorrow.
I would agree but include Zakk Wylde as well as being on another level.
Mikey rules even when they pretend he wasn't a big part of their sound.
They can't deny that..mike was so great too.. those background vocals 💪
When think of VH one of the MAIN things I think of is Michael Anthony's Vocals, and that's not just a stroke job, FACT.
Mikey was definitely important to the sound! No better backing vocalist! The only other that comes to mind is Richie!
From his vocals and bass lines to his bass tone
Mike was the part of the foundation of Van Halen
Can’t figure out why Eddie treated Anthony with such disrespect up to his last breath. Most people would want to make amends when they know their time is finite. There’s no excuse for the contempt that he showed.
Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player of all time !
I agree. And also a world class douche…..there, I said it
No doubt
💯
And remains to be
not really...
First time I am seeing this. How is that possible?!?!?!?!?! Better late than never...just wish the world still had Edward. Best band EVER!!!
💯
Don't ever forget and remember what Eddie said... "I will ALWAYS BE HERE"... "Just 'PUSH' Play". (((EVH)))
If you like this video you have to check the book Eruption in the Canyon by Andrew Bennet. He's the person who recorded all of this footage during that time.
@@EvelioMancospeedandroll Excellent book!! Even as much of an EVH fan as I am, it just cements what DLR said:
Without a guitar in his hands, EVH is a shitty human being"
@ChrisM-yl5yw If you want to see more footage of that era, the author of the book has an address or email where you pay to watch more videos from that time.
Sad not to see Mike in this video. According to Sammy, Ed recorded all the bass parts then forced Mike to take a cut in pay & give up his rights to anything Van Halen. It was the beginning of the end. I miss & love Eddie, but that just wasn’t right. Too bad those 2 never got to reconcile.
It actually started after 1984, they slowly were cutting Mike's pay and royalties. He was lucky to be part of the group after 1984. I once read the band made an average of $250k on merchandise during each show. I get the feeling Mike got a set salary and maybe a part of the merchandise. Nevertheless, he did well.
His playing and voice were what made the VH sound in early years.
@@nymike06 $250K?? If possible that's DEF net but the VH bros dicked Mikey just like Gene $immon$ and Paul $tanley did by making band members salaried employees. Shitty thing to do to people for sure.
@@ROOKTABULA Yeah, one of the opening acts from the last VH tour was discussing how the (shady) business of music works. He said the VH band were very accommodating to him, they called the record company to help his band get better travel deals and sleeping arrangements but to no avail. He also said VH raked in over $250k a night in merchandise at concert venues. Not bad. So, I'm sure Michael Anthony got something, some percentage from that outside of his flat rate pay scale.
I just can't see them being that cold.
Bon Jovi did the same thing as KISS, his band mates are 'employees' but recall Richie Sambora say he made $2 million a month while in tour with JBJ. He said this when he quit the band, not over money but artistic differences. Nevertheless, pretty good pay.
@@Dbunkr55 LOL Yeah. Right. That's what made their sound. LMAO
tough gig ..... he is/was my guitar hero, picked up my 1st guitar to be like him. Still playing 43 years later !!! EVH !
I love it, I just miss Eddie, Eddie was a Guitar GOD, There will never be another Guitar Player Like Him. RIP Eddie Van Halen. You are greatly Missed.
Very nice 👍🏻. One of guys best I have seen in all my 50 years. You did Eddie proud man. RIP King Edward
Guitar has never quite been the same , long live the king EVH
So glad he cleaned up a few years later. That's a rough watch.
I cannot agree with you more, but it feels like it had to be seen.
Wow !!!! Just wow !!!!
First 40 seconds is just a beast
That magical syncopation this band produced is something I am already missing.
Van Hagar
This period broke my heart.
One thing we can all agree, at least we saw Eddie's return to a better time for several years of touring and one more album. That is the version I will remember. This time is a hard one to watch.
As much as I love “Van Hagar” this is such a sad time for them…you can practically feel the animosity between the brothers and Sammy!
Truth. And Mikey couldn't be ishown at least singing his signature backs? Because he was friends with Sam? Very sad indeed.
Alex seemed happy to see Sam, Eddie seemed angry with everyone
They probably wouldn't even have showed Sammy on here if it wasn't for the fact he's the lead singer
@@krthecarguy5150 That's what Captain Candyass gets for saying Lead singer and leader of the band what's the difference ? Among other things
@@arthuredens Eddie was major league fucked up.
Just crazy how bad things had gotten. It proves how even our hero RIP was subject to the worst of demons. On the one hand he never should have cut Mike out but on the other, touring with Wolf helped him on the road to recovery
So much friction. This was a very dark period for Eddie. So sad 🙁
EDDIE VAN HALEN ALWAYS LOVED FOREVER MISSED NEVER FORGOTTEN

Amazing gentleman!!!! Wow!!!

You can tell Eds not the same here. Thankfully he made it back long enough to play music with his son! Gone too soon. RIP EVH
Ed and Mike’s backing vocals are just awesome!
That's Steve Lukather not Mike.
@@johnnyblackhorse9022 i did not know that.... they sure treated Mike like crap... Mike's the man in my book

I wish the end of the song hadn't faded so quickly. Truly awesome to see 5150 as well.

@@EvelioMancospeedandroll yes indeed
It was hard reading Sammy's book about all this stuff. Eddie was falling apart. As Sammy said, "he let the demons in" and he watched them destroy him. Eddie was dealing with guilt, resentment, anger and pain. His marriage was gone, his band was gone and he was to blame for most of it. Evil always wants to cast you as the 'good guy', to BLAME everyone, to lash out and destroy everyone and everything around you. It was great seeing how Eddie came full circle at the end, though. His last live show at the Hollywood Bowl, he looked and sounded amazing.
I agree with you’re entire statement but Sammy made a huge mistake writing that book. He even admitted after Eddie died he regrets doing that. I think that book is why Alex Van Halen still won’t communicate with Sam to this day. It was unnecessary to air dirty laundry like that. It was obvious to everyone that Eddie was drinking way too much but Sam didn’t have to announce to the world about Eddie hiding cocaine in the wall of the 5150 bathroom plus all the other stuff. Roth and Ed insulted each other over the years but never to that extent. Ed definitely did redeem himself from 2008 on for sure. His playing on the 2015 tour was outstanding and he was good ol’ smiling Ed again.
@@jeremysenecal5340 Agree about Sammy.
I think Sammy is a bit insecure, a bit jaded about how it all ended, there was ill will and pain on all sides, acrimony and stubbornness caused everyone to make their case in a very public way. Roth and Sammy as the polar opposites of each other but that isn't to say that Roth is "bad" and Sammy is "good". I've read Van Halen Rising and other books about the band, there were deep rooted issues everywhere from the start.
It was a hard pill for Eddie to swallow when he had to come and ask Sammy to do a "reunion" tour after his new singer was a disaster. That pride pill caused him to act out, lash out and become someone and something he isn't. Perhaps its fitting that he adopted the symbol of a dragon around that time, a reflection of the devils had come to destroy him...and almost did.
@@Calif5150 yeah it definitely is hard to watch some of those performances and Sammy was right about the tour being a disaster. A few of those shows Eddie was crying and overcome with emotion. I still watch some of those shows on RUclips just out of curiosity and there are a couple shows where he was on but not many. Sammy has said they were worried that Ed might die on tour. The fact that he got well and improved every tour right up to the end makes me feel a lot better. It's almost like he knew that last show at the Hollywood bowl was going to be his last ever because he was on fire. I'm so glad he didn't finish his career playing like he did in 2004.
@@Calif5150 Yes sir it goes to show that we never know what someone is going through and shouldn’t judge. You’re right about the fans still giving Eddie the support he earned. I don’t think too many people walked out of the shows. As far as the 04 tour I’m sure he used it as motivation to come back stronger than ever. I’m sure he watched at least some of those performances on RUclips after he sobered up a little and couldn’t believe it was him out there.
It didn't Help that he married a narcissist pretty much no good fake homely
Great guitar.....amazing sound...The best!!!!
That intro is insane…

Always good day to hear a NEW Eddie song 💘
Welcome to 2004.
I love all that is VH ! All of it. Everything.
Never gets old, finding VH stuff I've not heard before. Sammy added so much to the music. It would have been great if they had done a duet performance along the way. David Lee and Sammy jamming their pipes together. That would have been awesome. Both versions of this band will go down in history. RIP Eddie - GOAT
Glen Ballard also in the video. Genius producer
Wow when i think about some people have like sports card and memorabilia, rare coin collections or guitar collections but a collection of van halen shows that were recorded before they even became rock stars but for yhe ones who thought it important to record the band just brilliant and lucky for mike that he knew to collect and put together all these recordings who knew that someday it would open the door for him to get to meet Ed that way. This is an awesome story its hard to believe that Ed and Alex never thought to record their shows themselves but then again who knew those tapes and bootlegs are gold 🥇
I noticed EVH was playing
bass on this as well
I think Michael is singing but this was the end of the road for him in the band.. sadly. Edward had a real hard on for Michael for whatever reason. And you also notice that the song lacks a Bass guitar presence, but still is one of my favorite VH songs *ever*
VH Music is like awesome hard rock with the light on. R.I.P. Ed
Van Halen is awesome no matter who is singing all of the albums kick ass they are legends of rock that will live on forever with the fans and Sammy's got killer vocals
Wrong this is shit and ruined Van Halen's legacy
What eddie did to sammy and mike was wrong look at the consequences that happened. getting dave again ? Come on !!!
Yes, but the band sounds much worse with Cherone than with Sammy and Dave, and worse without Michael Anthony.
@@rolandodacion7093 Your 100% wrong and just repeating Hagar's vile filth. Those guys would sell their mother for a dollar. What stupid Hagar and Mike did was a travesty. Mike was just a walking JD advertisement on stage playing that stupid bass that no one gave a shit about. Eddie was right they only loved the money. Then stabbed the VH brothers in the back the first chance they got. VH was Eddy's band he could have anyone he wanted to play in it and he cursed the day that he let Hagar in and felt stabbed in the back when Mike left to join that wanker instead of staying loyal to VH.

До чего же крут Эдди! 👍
I remember this "phase" of VH. This was when Sammy came back to the band and then they toured. This tour came to Houston at the shit Toyota Center. (worst place for a rock concert because the acoustics are horrid). I definitely remember after Ed finished his solo he looked to the crowd and shrugged and mouthed "I did the best I could" Something I will never forget. As much as I love VH I swore I would never see them in concert again. Ed was so trashed and you can definitely see it in this video as well. Alcoholism is a mother fucker and he looks like shit here. He looked the same way at the concert. On the other hand, this song with the definitive classic Ed rhythm riff is killer. This is a great song hands down.

Hang em high? Dude go listen to ed and al on hang em high. Fukin insane. Plus their last cd was a monster
He died on my 54th birthday and i know why
Yep. Dave was called for that tour but turned it down because Ed was not sober. A shame because the music for the three new songs was stellar and Roth could've done them better than Up For Breakfast.
I think it might have been more than booze, he got sooo skinny and acted twerked out . RIP Edward.
