I begged my mom to get me them...and she did... while rolling her eyes. I felt soooo cool wearing pants just like Eddie had! lol
This came out right before graduation. I have great memories listening to this. One good thing about Van Halen without any singing you knew who it was as soon as you heard the drums and guitar you knew exactly who it was.
Eddie Van Halen looked like a real happy person... Most people would be happy too if they could play like that and come up with such great song ideas. He made it look so easy.. dancing and smiling...like if he were saying... I'm bad. When you grab a guitar and try to play, you will immediately realize that Eddie was super human...and he definitely put in the endless hours of practice. As a kid, he would leave school and go home and practice.... practice makes perfect... Me on
Everytime I see Eddie Van Halen on these videos you just make me want to cry he was the greatest we'll all miss him there will never be another one like him ever he was the greatest ever born to play guitar all miss you daddy rock and roll has died somewhat since you left this world
Driving 74 nova at 16 on the main drag saturday night blasting on cheap speakers with this cassette playing and so much fun. My favorite memory as a teenager. Kids today miss so much fun.
after looking at thousands and thousands of VH videos over the last (However long YT has been around) I would have to say that this particular performance of this song was so highly underrated... now that Ed is gone, you really appreciate seeing just how fricking HAPPY he always appeared. Yes, he had his low times and his ugly times. Who doesn't? But ... aside from his particular set of skills and the way his brain works, he also played his guitar with a HAPPY and GLEEFUL looking face, unlike most guitarists of his time. Usually guitarists have a brooding, somewhat arrogant and angry look. Eddie truly enjoyed what he did... he did it until he could do it no more. What a life. I am an extremely hardcore Eddie fan when it comes to the guitar. Doesn't matter what or who I play with, I (after 40 years) do "sound' like as do many of us guys who worked so hard at playing like him and understanding just 'how' he came up with his licks (still working on that one)... anyway, point is, especially for the younger generation that wasn't there in 78' ... this is a really good video to show what Van Halen could do, even though I am a much more hardcore DLR DD fan, it's so nice to see Eddie play happy music. He is truly enjoying this particular evening and it's so awesome that we GET to watch this kind of thing.
I like this fellow. This Edward bloke. I'm 54years old/young, and I've been living music since first light. We've seen some amazing performers over the decades, but I have absolutely no hesitation in calling Eddie out. He is THE best rock guitarist to date. I play guitar (poorly) and have spent decades soul searching, but it always comes back you that smile. EVH = GOAT.
Dude you are so right!!! Nicely done!!! Boom! Thank you for saying that!Ok how it is when a person says " That is eye candy! Van Halen is Ear candy! Right! Yeeeeees! 100%
They most certainly can be tighter, but still this was pretty good. First of all though - this thing is WAY off tempo, much faster than they wrote the song, and that's on the drummer. Really easy to play too fast when excited. Second - some of the transitions and fills aren't that clean and pristine, although they are handled well and most probably can't tell. If you want to see a band that plays TIGHT you should check out anything by Dirty Loops. Probably start by listening to Follow the Light. Anyway, you're welcome lol, you're going to love this band and go down a rabbit hole listening to all their music.
Sammy said that the Summer Nights riff was the first thing Eddie played when they first got together in 1985. Sammy joined right in with the chorus "Summer nights and my radio... that's all we need..." He knew right then it was going to work.
Ur so right nancy brown!!! Van Halen was my first album i bought. Best thing i did witch got me listening to ALL. the rock bands. @Kelvin Broce I hear ya bro...I'm 49, and growing up, my bedroom walls were covered in Eddie posters, magazine pictures, articles, ads, etc etc...and once Ed started playing keyboards, I'd have ads for the Oberhiem synth, because that was the synth Eddie played...he was like an uncle I never really met, but knew he was out there somewhere making people happy. Once he passed away, I wept harder than I did when my real uncle died...I STILL tear up from time time when listening to VH songs like this one...
@@defhoez449, yeah... I agree. Their is no one who can replace him. I hear resently, that Wolfgang is going to continue Van Halen. Let's see how that pans out.

Every one of these live videos hurts so much to watch. All I do is cry when I see Eddie smiling and playing guitar, we really lost something with Eddie’s passing, something we’ll NEVER have again.
Eddie's passing certainly hit different than any other musician's in my lifetime. We will never see anyone like him again, but we at least we have the privilege of experiencing his amazing talent.
I think these videos are especially tough reminders not only because we have lost him, but because these represent our times growing up on them... and his smile is such a reminder of how good those times were. It still hits me in the heart watching his smile and happiness bringing the same to us through his God given gift at music. ❤❤❤
But at least we were around when he was here. Twenty years from now, people will be wishing that they had a chance to see him live, and have the excitement we felt when we knew a new VH record was coming out.
Wow.. Loved this video back then and it's just as great now. What a fascinating track, musically, as with all of 5150. My personal favourite VH album. The whole band, so much talent, so unique. I miss them.
Hey Mike! This song makes me want to dance! Not a norm for heavy rock. It’s got that special beat...happy!!!! Hope you’re getting off your couch and doing some serious air guitar!
Guys like Eddie (obviously Eddie is the greatest ever) are born with that certain something, what it is I don't know, but it's a very special gift that's there from day one. Bit like a person who is great at art, I'm sure we all knew someone in our school days who was brilliant at drawing who never had any art lessons, it's that same special gift that's there from the get go. Thanks Eddie 🤟
I've said for more than 30 years now "5150" was an awesome record from start to finish. And this song, "Summer Nights" is in my top 2 favorites, along with "Best of Both Worlds." Sammy Hagar brought such a strong dimension to the band which made them, I think, better than ever.
Oh I agree , one of, if not the, best album they did. Eddie's best sounding guitar, tone-wise, he finally put a little bottom end to his sound, not so treblely, put a little chunk in that crunch , balanced it out and gave it a heavier sound , actually found a way to put some gravitas in his sound . Like in "Don't tell me what love can do" and he just da da da da da da , rides each chord and it's resonance kicks ass ! I've played since '72 an EVH has been pretty much my favorite and biggest influence since '78. Oh but yeah I agree , arguably the best album . I also think "summer nights" is about my fav VH song . The guitar is so fun to play it's like playing "Spirit of the Radio" by Rush , it's never EASY but it's ALWAYS fun . I really like the title track "5150", I like songs with busy guitar parts and the intro is a blast . One thing I really noticed , that I probably should have years earlier, how well they harmonize and how good their background vocals were. When they're singing "ahhh ah" and "summer nights" the harmonizations perfect ! Some of the best background vocals since the Beatles and Bad Finger .
How many of us fortunate ones got to actually jam to this cruising the local strip and hanging out in parking lots? I'm sure sounds lame to many now. Little did we know then how lucky we were!
I cranked this album in my 1986 Suzuki Samurai 🤣. Other guys would make fun of the little jeep. But they’d be home on Friday while me and my friends would cruise Broadway Street in San Francisco having a time I will never forget.
Van Halen with Sammy as lead was the best version of VH IMO! Yes I love a few songs with DLR, but Sammy's version was the best! RIP Eddie you were/are the greatest guitarist ever!!!
Two great version of Van Halen. The DLR version was raw and gritty. Everyone was learning still, but DLR was a great showman...even busted up his face a few times trying impress the audience. Lol Hagar VH is polished and effortless. From instruments to vocals, these guys were spot on and lyrically better too.
Honestly the real sound of VH was with DLR but I do have mad respect for Sammy. Their later sound was more pop than hard rock. I’ve been a huge fan since their first album and listened to them religiously everyday after school.
Van Halen- Live Without a Net was the epitome of my middle and high school years. I wore that VHS out. But I still have it, 35 years later. EVH51504EVER
I don't think I've ever seen anyone smile as much as Eddie while he's playin. U can jus tell he absolutely loves it! RIP to one of the best to ever do it. Thanks Eddie!
Easily the greatest rock concerts I’ve ever seen. I saw a few of their tours but the biggest moment for me was when I caught Eddie’s pic!!!!! It’s yellow with VH on it.
AWESOME! I Bought all the singles, imports, full length CDs. Went to all of the 3 eras concerts. Learned how to play all the music on guitar! Thanks Van Halen!
I was a high school junior, couldn’t get enough of Eddie and VH. Now I’m 52, and Eddie is gone. RIP to the greatest; if only we could turn back time and get that ever-present cigarette away from him; We might still be graced with his awesomeness

Man you could really tell these guys had a ton of fun during the Sammy era. We all know that Dave was an incredibly talented frontman, but the chemistry they all had with Sammy is undeniable.
5150 is a epic album. VH was my favorite band because it was a bit of fresh sound when I first heard them on the radio in 78 . Even though I was only 12 at that time I mowed like four lawns to get the money go to peaches that was the record store we had in SW Detroit where I grew up. I liked both DLR and Sammy as long as EVH was playing the guitar I was a fan . RIP EVH . I fill I lost a little bit of myself when he passed away. The dude was in my heart the best guitar player ever.
Went to this Tour in Portland. Maine. My two cousins were huge Led Zeppelin fans and had never seen Eddie play. Let's just say I had to rent an industrial Jack to get their lower Jaws off the floor!
I remember watching this on vhs over and over again not hearing anything like it. Never gets old and I still find something new Eddie does that blows me away.
Wow, I can't believe that I cried when he passed and still miss him and I never met him or even walked past him on the street , 56 years of rock and roll concerts and the love of music!!
5150 was my first & only tour of seeing EVH live. Almost missed out, 2 concerts were scheduled, and both sold out in 3 hrs. that night they announced a 3rd concert, and I was able to score tickets thanks to my sister going to Famous Barr and getting them.., this was waaaay before buying online. Went with my best friend from college, we both say it's still one of the best concerts we ever seen.
This was THE hottest performance ever by Edward van halen!.......his power on this song is what legends are made from!!!....Thank You Ed.......I will always love you and your guitar spirit......lucky to be alive in this time!!!
They were so tight live. I know the DLR era will always be considered their classic years, but DLR live was never a great musical performance. This tour and the one for Carnal Knowledge in 1991/92 they never sounded any better in my opinion.

Eddie was and is a legend, great, humble, dedicated musician,a rare talent. This is one of the Van Halen best live performances ever! It's just loud, explosive, smashing energy on stage! Rock will never die.
Eddie was a gift from God for sure. Brought so much joy to so many people and always will.
Hello Carolee, how are you doing?
Sammy Hagar might be the greatest singing frontman ever if you take into account his longevity the guy still plays and sings like he's 30.
Roth absolutely wins the Van Halen record sales battle with 57 million sales worldwide to Hagar's 27 million worldwide sales.
@@ROARINGLION11 we know that, Saul. But Sammy can still whale and Roth sounds like a shell of his former self. Roth will always be my favorite era of VH, but what op said is true.
@@gsxerwhite Yet Dave still sells more, lol
@@ROARINGLION11 lol Roth got the most shekels out of VH 😄

Eddie Van Halen was the only man on the planet that could get away with wearing I Dream of Jeannie pants and not get beat up.
And look good in ‘em too, not stupid. Even now, lol.
I live in Canada...my grandparents used to have a place in Florida, and we would go to visit them every Christmas through the 80's...but, in 1986...my mom took me shopping at the mall.
And right there...on a rack in a men's clothing store, I saw a pair of pants EXACTLY like Eddie's pants from this concert, but orange in color. I begged my mom to get me them...and she did... while rolling her eyes. I felt soooo cool wearing pants just like Eddie had! lol
I'd be more worried about what Hagar's wearing than Eddie's pants.
If only he had her mid-riff.
@@BuckFiddy5 No need to bring politics to this haven.
Eddie's energy and talent just amazing, they all just rock my world.
No nobody in ROCK can come close EVVVVVRRRRR.
This came out right before graduation. I have great memories listening to this. One good thing about Van Halen without any singing you knew who it was as soon as you heard the drums and guitar you knew exactly who it was.
This was the song where I knew Van Halen had made the perfect singer choice. You Go Sammy!!! Man, those were fantastic days fellas, thank you so much.
Me on
If you want to be good on a guitar ? I call it the 10,000 hours of practice. It does work.
Everytime I see Eddie Van Halen on these videos you just make me want to cry he was the greatest we'll all miss him there will never be another one like him ever he was the greatest ever born to play guitar all miss you daddy rock and roll has died somewhat since you left this world
And he's been gone almost 4 years already. Where the hell does the time go?...
Driving 74 nova at 16 on the main drag saturday night blasting on cheap speakers with this cassette playing and so much fun.
My favorite memory as a teenager.
Kids today miss so much fun.
I agree. I had more fun listening to cassette tapes.
Me too.
How many American boys were 16 or 17 driving up and down the main drag lookin' for chicks while blastin' some Halen? I bet it's in the millions.
@@lukebuchwald9252except wasn't a boy listening to this..........😅😂
I love to see how Eddie loved to play, laughing, enjoying, his smiles...
Thank you Eddie - wherever you are. You are our hero..
He was literally like a kid playing in the rain. He loved it. That's what is missing these days. Commitment to a skill and enjoyed.
after looking at thousands and thousands of VH videos over the last (However long YT has been around) I would have to say that this particular performance of this song was so highly underrated... now that Ed is gone, you really appreciate seeing just how fricking HAPPY he always appeared.
Like l said Eddie was paying attention to Sammy
Love the bit where Ed turns to Sammy and joins in on the "UGH". Love that moment. Al's having a ball too. Great to see. Love this gig.
Eddie could have have played a shoelace tied to a broomstick and it would have shredded
Just listened to 5150 on bose speakers💓

I like this fellow. This Edward bloke.
I'm 54years old/young, and I've been living music since first light.
We've seen some amazing performers over the decades, but I have absolutely no hesitation in calling Eddie out.
He is THE best rock guitarist to date.
I play guitar (poorly) and have spent decades soul searching, but it always comes back you that smile.
EVH = GOAT.
That's a truly an amazing live performance . So different from sitting down by yourself and playing. WOW!
Hard to believe this is only a few years removed from Panama and Jump. Crazy how they just picked back up so quick to make more amazing music!
I don't think a band could be any tighter musically than this lineup.
@@sparkfx5874 yeah cause no band has ever played live at a slightly faster tempo before. Ass.....
We were VERY lucky as in our era we had the BEST OF THE BEST for music. For me its still my fav of all music. Feel blessed we heard it first in our times. Attention heaven, I know you needed Eddie but we really miss that smile and his amazing guitar. Rip buddy.
Sigh.
I am going to play this video everyday as a tribute to Eddie! One of the best rock guitarists on earth! R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen.
I've been watching it almost everyday since he passed 4 months ago
I'd have to disagree about Ed being ONE of the greatest rock guitar players....he was THE greatest rock guitar player, hands down.
He was/is the GOAT, and he'll never be replaced. I'm gonna miss him dearly. RIP
@@defhoez449, man I can relate to ya. I had posters, pics of guitars, all of Halen's cassette tapes. Watched "Live without a Net." Over, and over. When I played Van Halen, it had to be played loud, so the neighbors could hear it. It worked, Lol... Saw them in concert, 3 days after my 18th birthday. A limo there and back home. 3 Rd row. What a great summer it was! Beautiful summer nights immortalised by an amazing song! Thank you Eddie and Sammy 🔥🤘

Every one of these live videos hurts so much to watch. All I do is cry when I see Eddie smiling and playing guitar, we really lost something with Eddie’s passing, something we’ll NEVER have again.
Of all the celebrity passings in my life, this one hurt my heart. But im thankful to have witnessed the Mighty Van Halen!
Me too. 😭
As happy as EVH ever looked on stage. Those early Sammy days just seemed magic.
1,000% awesome. Everyone on that stage is great here. Spectacular
My favorite song from 5150 and this live version is ROCKIN!
This song so brings me back to living the late 80s. Could of been our theme song.
Hey Mike! This song makes me want to dance! Not a norm for heavy rock. It’s got that special beat...happy!!!! Hope you’re getting off your couch and doing some serious air guitar!
Mike just the joy on Eddie's face here is priceless..love this video..
Damn good M U S. I C
Man, getting Live Without A Net and watching it over and over and over again as a teen! Good shit! 🎸Live Right Here Right Now is great as well!
Eddie is not dead. God just needs guitar lessons.
Beautiful
I've said for more than 30 years now "5150" was an awesome record from start to finish. And this song, "Summer Nights" is in my top 2 favorites, along with "Best of Both Worlds." Sammy Hagar brought such a strong dimension to the band which made them, I think, better than ever.
Well said,sir🤘
5150 is good however VH1 is the best album by far! I love VH2 and fair warning also
Oh I agree , one of, if not the, best album they did.
Besides being with his son, being on stage playing is his happy place.
How many of us fortunate ones got to actually jam to this cruising the local strip and hanging out in parking lots? I'm sure sounds lame to many now. Little did we know then how lucky we were!
So true!!! I absolutely loved this song..and I blasted it in my 89 Mustang 5.0 convertible!!! Along with Whitesnakes 87
Not lame at all
NAILED IT ! AND NO NOW TODAY ITS LAME WE DON'T HAVE THIS ANYMORE OR THE MUSIC, NEW MUSIC THAT IS !
I cranked this album in my 1986 Suzuki Samurai 🤣. Other guys would make fun of the little jeep. But they’d be home on Friday while me and my friends would cruise Broadway Street in San Francisco having a time I will never forget.
This is the best version of the best song ever recorded by any version of Van Halen!
Van Halen has a lot of great songs but this is by far my favourite. Even after all these years I still go back and listen to it over and over
Van Halen with Sammy as lead was the best version of VH IMO!
Lol
Hagar VH is polished and effortless. From instruments to vocals, these guys were spot on and lyrically better too.
Honestly the real sound of VH was with DLR but I do have mad respect for Sammy. Their later sound was more pop than hard rock. I’ve been a huge fan since their first album and listened to them religiously everyday after school.
I love 'em both but if I had to choose just one it'd be Van Hagar based on this song alone.
@DN Dave is a great showman....too bad he can't sing to save his life
@@rmbuilder1 I love this but this isn't exactly great singing either
Van Halen- Live Without a Net was the epitome of my middle and high school years. I wore that VHS out. But I still have it, 35 years later. EVH51504EVER
When they (finally) make a biopic movie about Van Halen (like with Queen), Keanu Reeves should play Alex
Alex Van Halen is the most criminally underrated drummer EVER, maybe
His son should make it hollywood would f it up like the Grammy.

I wish Van Halen filmed more of their earlier works with David... Every video from the David Lee Roth era is absolute gold.

Unbelievable how simple and complex the guitar work is and Eddie makes it look so effortless and FUN...definitely miss him lots.

Man you could really tell these guys had a ton of fun during the Sammy era. We all know that Dave was an incredibly talented frontman, but the chemistry they all had with Sammy is undeniable.
They said in interviews the chemistry when Sammy jammed the first time was apparent. I believe songs from 5150 were written that day..
@@yourdrummer2034 yeah you’re right. I’ve heard that interview. People don’t realize how far chemistry alone can take you as far as songwriting goes.
That ending when the full band comes back in with the backing vocals gives me chills every time.
5150 is a epic album. VH was my favorite band because it was a bit of fresh sound when I first heard them on the radio in 78 . Even though I was only 12 at that time I mowed like four lawns to get the money go to peaches that was the record store we had in SW Detroit where I grew up. They were so tight live. I know the DLR era will always be considered their classic years, but DLR live was never a great musical performance. This tour and the one for Carnal Knowledge in 1991/92 they never sounded any better in my opinion.
This solo is unsurpassed! Eddie is number one, all the other guitarists fade from view.
