Thanks for this video!! I'm a 54 year old who just started collecting and this video will lead me in the right direction! Thanks for sharing this with all of us comic collectors!!
Last year I completed my uncanny X-Men run from 1-544. My advice from my experience is to get the big ticket books out of the way first. The longer you wait , the more out of reach they become. But on a side note. It did take me personally, 24 years to accomplish this as each book is at least a 7.0 or higher in grade.
This is spot on. I collected as a kid, lost most of what I had then started back up a couple years ago. I've slowing fallen into this level of thinking about my collection. And the budget this is very important.
Totally agree with your commandments. The focus and goal part is so TRUE! For years, I've had that issue of left and right buying comics but once I had a goal, the focus is clear. Now I have awesome completed series.
I don't get it.. my comic book store doesn't charge for bags and boards. Everything in the store is bag and boarded with bcw anti acid bags and boards.
It really depends where you go but most of the time, trade paper backs are all covered and are included with the price of the book but new issues I've always had to pay around 15 cents for bags and boards
This practice will stop. Trust me. Eventually this store will realize the price of these bags and boards, and will discontinue giving them away. This happens alot at other Locations.
Thanks Brian iv been jumping in and out of the comic collecting for 35 years now.But I'm back in full force. Was locked up a Lil over 11 years and comics all ways keep me out of trouble and no trouble is the plan my man . Definitely gonna start putting a budget limited haven't been unable to pay my bills and comics is what has been paying the bills. Not as much as my old job the got me a 11 yes but at least it's honest and I'm home with my grandkids and kids thanks for all the help in that.
Great video, sir. I, like you, have been collecting on, and off, and on again since 1992 when I bought my first Amazing Spider-Man. The last few years I've been (unknowingly) following your commandment #10 - find a run of a good comic and find/collect them.
A perfect set of advice for collectors. If you follow this you should feel great about your collection. Don't forget to treat yourself for your Birthday or Christmas with a comic that may be outside of your monthly budget live a little and don't be rigid.
A couple of additional items, I'd like to add: I have an additional insurance policy specifically for my comic book collection. I have custom shelves in the basement to hold my short and long boxes, but don't put books on the lower tier of the shelves in case of flooding (plus, my insurance has me keeping my books 18 inches above the ground due to moisture/flooding). For storage, I use standard boxes for mid-range books and hard plastic boxes for my high end books (>FN Silver Age). I use archival paper in older books and place them in the front and back of the books to avoid the chemical decomposition of the covers and pages. Finally, for my non-CGC books that are of high value, I use top loaders, which are hard plastic , to store these books. All of my books have standard bags and boards and are stored where light and moisture won't degrade the books. Hope this additional information will help others in their collecting and storage.
These are great tips, I recently got back in last April. The first thing I did was set a goal and a budget. On my channel I stress do your research. Buy what you like and to buy the keys you can afford first. Every week I show the keys bronze and silver age with a saved $100 month buget. Glad I found your channel you have alot of great videos.
I can't argue with those 10 Commandments... solid, legit, and rules to live by. If you don't have a game plan you will more then likely buy comics you already HAVE but thought you didn't? Def some tidbits I did not know about -- Thanks for sharing AND just subbed
I never gave up "The Hobby" but I really tend to stay away from "Mainstream Comics" (i.e. Marvel and DC) because they almost exclusively publish "Super Hero" books with characters and storylines stuck in circular movement! I just read the BEST from my era and earlier and look at other publishers! I just love the medium itself!
Really late to be commenting, BUT - Great vid, great commandments. I've wandered in and out of the scene since the late 60s. Gone through many phases. Managed to hold on to a little bit of stuff from each phase. Now it's just Omnis and trades, with the occasional splurge on a slab. Anyway, you picked up a subscriber. ☮️
i really want a issue 300 venom and spiderman i want an original issue thats worth something but you know also does anyone know if the true believers issue is worth anything?
Dam right buy what u like.. I hate when I see cattle collectors who follow others. It's the most stupidest thing people do when collecting. They buy characters they don't give two cents about but feel they need to collect every single first appearance..
I identify with you a lot, I’ve been collecting on and off since childhood, and have picked it up again after trying to donate my small collection, but I’ve decided to keep them and start collecting again... You make very good points, giving me a better strategy to start again, thanks again bro!
If just to read I would look at trade paperbacks or ominbuses. If trying to buy individual copies I would look for sales online, promo code, bulk sales on ebay etc.
And also dont ber wrapped up in hype...or dont start emotional buying from places like Ebay. Play it smart because you can over spend by getting in bidding wars.
#3 I enjoy the comunity of Comicvine. #1 is the most important. Kinda makes the research one a little redundant, still relevant if you do like to speculate. Overall, good advice. Oh yea, how's your Daredevil goal going? 😎 (mine is to get the first hundred or so I'm missing from Volume 1)
I am a soon to be 69 year young collector who had to be reminded of many of the 10 commandments! I had lost focus on my goals which happened when JACK (THE KING) KIRBY passed away in 1994 because it was my goal to own everything that he had created, or drawn in comicbookdom! A very daunting task when you think about it.. Yet by about the year 2008 I had at one time or another had owed every superhero comic book that he had drawn, with the except a few of his romance and some of his cowboy issues and a few of his early Atlas pre-AF #15 monster comics! And since I had contributed to the creation of the JACK KIRBY GOLD EDITION IN 2008 and thought that my collection was done, only to discover there was more than just comic books.. there are pulps, trading cards, prints and other fine art prints, too , just to mention a few of the others items, that have been recently released in the larger edition, just released JACK KIRBY CHECKLIST CENTENNIAL EDITION 2018, which meant that for years I went without having been focused on my goal.. Thanks for your reminding me that my goal was never really never completed. Plus, when DC and Marvel is now re-releasing a ton of his old material in celebration of JACK'S 100th birthday this AUGUST and that there is a company (TITAN) out there who is reviving one of his short-lived characters which contain original cover material by Kirby and Simon and has a brand new exciting plotline ( FIGHTING AMERICAN is the comic book and its much different than the newer DC version a couple of years ago) that I still have a long way to go! Thanks for your reminder that my goal has not been yet met! FF
Well if you were going to collect one artist, I’d say you picked one of the best in Jack Kirby for sure! I’m sure you’re collection is amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story.
I clicked this simply because it is 11:24 long and my birthday is 11/24. Though I'm already a subscriber I typically don't dive years back to content but it was on my home page. So yeahhhhb
#1 is so true. Back in the 90s I bought so many things that i thought were going to be my gold in retirement. Now, Valiant is TRASH. Most of those MUST HAVE Image comics are now found in the Dollar Bins in comic shops...sigh. And, did i ever read any of them? not really.
Good point Skot!!! I’m pretty sure everyone, including myself, has bought comics outside our interest with the thought of it being a good investment only to be left holding dollar bin fodder of books we don’t even like lmao. It’s a good lesson but can sometime be costly. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I’m new to comics and I have a strict policy on hardcovers and NEVER getting comics retailed prices. Looool I thought you were going to show us comics we gotta read. Wrong video
the only way to get comics is from garage sales because everything is inflated and overpriced on ebay, there's a lot scalpers and resellers there! comics are only for millionaries.
you are lucky because you live in USA and there's a lot garage sales, but me (outside) USA the only way to buy is online (ebay, facebook, etc.) and everything is INFLATED online! It's seems is a rule ONCE A COLLECTABLE ITEM TOUCH INTERNET! prices go up! I collect video games and music, and same happens, everybody in USA hit garage sales and later place online and Boom! high prices, there's a lot resellers and scalpers, believe me is really hard be a collector outside USA.
Good commandments and tips for newbies. Wish more collectors would follow the first one. Thumbs up buddy.
Thanks for this video!! I'm a 54 year old who just started collecting and this video will lead me in the right direction! Thanks for sharing this with all of us comic collectors!!
That's great! I'm glad it helps you out. Comic book collecting is such a great hobby. Enjoy the journey!
Last year I completed my uncanny X-Men run from 1-544. My advice from my experience is to get the big ticket books out of the way first. The longer you wait , the more out of reach they become. Great advice and congrats, that is one hell of a run to put together!
Richard Nevarez - Congrats! That is a hell of a run.
Wow! Great run and great advice.
This is spot on. I collected as a kid, lost most of what I had then started back up a couple years ago. I've slowing fallen into this level of thinking about my collection. And the budget this is very important.
I began shaving my head so I don’t have to pay for haircuts anymore and can buy more comics.
lol hell of a plan!
Simpleman's Comics I mean that like an extra $50.00 bucks in comics. Screw retirement
oh i agree. I’d do it too but my ears are too big to shave my head
I can't get away with this. I'm a barber lol
Lmao
Totally agree with your commandments. The focus and goal part is so TRUE! For years, I've had that issue of left and right buying comics but once I had a goal, the focus is clear. Now I have awesome completed series.
I don't get it.. my comic book store doesn't charge for bags and boards. Everything in the store is bag and boarded with bcw anti acid bags and boards.
Chris Garcia were is your lcs
mine charges only $0.25 for bag with board
It really depends where you go but most of the time, trade paper backs are all covered and are included with the price of the book but new issues I've always had to pay around 15 cents for bags and boards
This practice will stop. Trust me. Eventually this store will realize the price of these bags and boards, and will discontinue giving them away. This happens alot at other Locations.
Mine charges .35 cents or they sneak in the charge with an already bag n board comic. They need to make their money
Any video that features Charlton Heston has got my attention! Great points, great video!

Sounds great Hunter! Comic Books is a hobby that can be enjoyed for sure, whether for the art, stories, or pure nostalgia it’s great.
Great video, sir. I, like you, have been collecting on, and off, and on again since 1992 when I bought my first Amazing Spider-Man. The last few years I've been (unknowingly) following your commandment #10 - find a run of a good comic and find/collect them.
That’s awesome! Buy what you like for sure. I think sometimes people have a hard time remembering it’s a hobby and is suppose to be fun
A perfect set of advice for collectors. If you follow this you should feel great about your collection. Don't forget to treat yourself for your Birthday or Christmas with a comic that may be outside of your monthly budget live a little and don't be rigid.
A good financial lesson in life is to never buy anything outside your budget. Ever.
+Alan Ross Completely agree. A lesson I've learned the hard way a few times over the years lol
Met too. Those damn credit cards make it too easy!

All invaluable information! Thank you so much for sharing
I feel that most of the points are applicable with any collection 👍good job!

I gave up drinking and smoking to buy comics. One key comic worth 2000.00 was one weekend of partying and crack.

Wolf Warner Yes!
This! This was the last lesson I learned before I felt like I was beyond amateur level, well at least in terms of knowledge.
That's a "biggie", I can't believe he didn't mention it, especially when you look at all the "Relaunches" and "reboots"!
Simpleman's Comics can you check out my comic book videos I also have a Pretty Good comic book storage system I think you would like
I never gave up "The Hobby" but I really tend to stay away from "Mainstream Comics" (i.e. Marvel and DC) because they almost exclusively publish "Super Hero" books with characters and storylines stuck in circular movement! I just read the BEST from my era and earlier and look at other publishers! I just love the medium itself!
Which comic books do you have and read?
Wonderful Wonderful Video! I haven't enjoyed a video more in a very long time.
+Axeon Thank you for watching!
Really late to be commenting, BUT - Great vid, great commandments.

Anyway, you picked up a subscriber. ☮️
Thank you so much for subscribing! I’ve found myself picking up more omnibuses now too. Great stories and entire runs in one centralized location
the only way to buy big keys is found it used for cheap in used stores, if not you need be a millionarie to pay ebay prices.

Great 10 commandments!
SNM I had no idea... didn't tell me --
Is binding comic books considered protecting it?
People do bind their comics to help protect them. It's not my preference of course but it is done
How do I start collecting long series, I want to collect despicable deadpool, but there’s hundreds of them
If just to read I would look at trade paperbacks or ominbuses. If trying to buy individual copies I would look for sales online, promo code, bulk sales on ebay etc.
Thank you for Commandment #1, I was afraid you wouldn't mention it.
Enjoyed it!
I only buy expensive when I get bonuses or money I didn’t plan to have. Other then that I set aside 25 dollars a week
And also dont ber wrapped up in hype...or dont start emotional buying from places like Ebay. Play it smart because you can over spend by getting in bidding wars.
Excellent point! I’ve caught myself getting ready to raise my max bid on ebay before noticing the same item cheaper as “Buy It Now”
Goals. , when met are meant to be surpassed
Amen. 🙏🏻🎯
When researching, animation and films can be a basic introduction to characters.
That’s an excellent point! Thanks for sharing

Are you really 69 cause you use the Internet great . My grandpa does not know how to use RUclips and he's 60
Frank Johnson holy crap this is a long comment

It's the ten crack commandments. We have a comic club in my town at the local college they mainly do digital I said peace out
Heed his words on variants...
Today I set up a comic wall just for Spider-Man comics that feature the black suit Spider-Man only
Ohhh nice! I bet that looks “amazing”🔥🕷
Simpleman's Comics yeah I have Spider-Man #13 with art by Todd McFarland on the wall

I am actually raiding the dollar bins to get some good reads for cheap. I'll never collect for $$$ again, just for fun.
I’m new to comics and I have a strict policy on hardcovers and NEVER getting comics retailed prices. Looool I thought you were going to show us comics we gotta read. Wrong video

Find dollar comics at dollar tree
That’s a great tip!
lately ive been collecting the true believers comics featuring phoenix
I enjoy picking up True Believers issues as well. I picked up multiples of Amazing Fantasy #15 a few months ago
Great vid, just subbed. Come check out my top 50.

I hear ya John. Great tip about garage sales. I’ve found Facebook is another place people sell for really inflated prices too. Thx for commenting.
