"Mint" when applied to books derives from the antiquarian book trade -- not from coin minting. Mint = top condition of a book as it would appear when newly printed.
Alison Armstrong It’s one of those things that makes you sound smart when you’re talking to other people but once you think about it for 2 seconds you’re like, “wait, what?”
Golden age comics are given allowences for minor wear that newer comics would not. What he said about all comics getting graded with the same standard is simply not true.
Do you need to send your comics in the mail to Sarasota? I have a copy of the first X-men comic (admittedly with some wear and tear) but I would not be comfortable mailing it.
What are your thoughts on slabbing variants? I usually buy the standard cover as a reader but sometimes my shop carries variants and he gives big discounts on his variants to move them, I've gotten 1:100 variants for $35. I usually buy them if I like the cover, J. Scott Campbell Marvel variants are a must buy for me. Since I won't read them, I've been thinking about getting them slabbed. My shop has also had cgc witnesses during store signings, so I was wondering about the yellow signature series, if that's worth slabbing?
Is there anything inside those sealed plastic grading cases with the comic? You'd think, without unbuffered acid free paper to absorb some of the acidity, the comics would disintegrate over time.
To emphasize something here (note this is from personal experience and from general location, so if you had a different experience please share)no comic shop is ever going to pay you the FULL value of your book unless the owner wants it and is going to get to add it to their collection. From talking to several of them they take the value and place it at almost 10%-17% and then go down based on condition. I am aware that with some books the value will probably never go up (DreamWave Transformers for instance). But to put it in perspective a book ungraded in very good condition, no yellow pages, no tears, no physical deformities visible. Was told value is $100.00 most any comic shop ever offered for it is $20.00 (which guy said is the most I'd get selling to a shop). The reason I always get is it's difficult to resale them for their value. In this case he claimed no one would probably be able to move the book for more than $75.00. So for closer to maximum value avoid selling to comic shops all together.
This is very true. The real money from comics come from collectors who know their stuff, not from shops or dealers. My father sold a few books from his collection for a down payment on a house. He sold them to a collector. The comic shop he dealt with offered him a small fraction of what he got.
Why would it cost more to encapsulate an expensive comic over a regular value comic? It is the same procedure, same materials. This is like an ad agency, a middle man between the buyer and seller making most of the money.
3:19 How can you really say graded comics " objectively" when people still argue about the grade of the comic even in the case. It's still probably subjective
I know this is an older video and I love it but I got a quick question I got a 9.8 Halloween nightdance #4 signed by John carpenter and was wondering how much you think it’s worth
I'd have to disagree with some of what he said, there are modern age comics that can hold value. Sure, #17 of an odd-ball series from the New 52 won't be worth more than 2-3 bucks, but #1 issues, like Batman, have seen their value hold and go up, some even due to TV or movie adapation as well (The Flash and Suicide Squad). I would say issues like Batman 1, 1:100 Variants, etc. could be worth slabbing. I am just against the whole process of mailing the comic and not seeing any of the process. I couldn't trust them with my favorite/most valuable books, no matter what their reputation is. Nonetheless, a decent and informative video.
hi,if the staples are not in the center of the comic, they are not rusty but not in the middle of the two center pages, they are placed liitle left in the one of the two central pages?it's from the factory pressing undoubrtly.besides that the issue is a nearmint-vf issue.how would you grade this issue? also i have to say that the stapples re shown inthe backcover not in the spine.
First off, you _can_ find 'Mint' comics at the store when they come out, it just isn't very often because the comics are going to take some damage from packing. The best place to buy is an LCS that buys bulk, the more there are the better chance some might escape being damaged. If you're a hardcore collector like I was you check all the stock and 'cherry pick' the best, and I consistently got from 9.4 to 9.8 grade issues, with a 9.9 or 10 once in a blue moon. *Do NOT have the shop do a pull list if you can avoid it, they likely won't care to give you the best copy... find out the day and time new comics come out, get their first, get the best. 'Mint' has nothing to do with coins or 'print', it's just a synonym for 'pristinne', or unblemmished.
I have 2 CGC comics I bought them both one at a comic con and one at a comic book store in Hawaii my highest Grade is 9.8 and my lowest Grade is 5.5 I usually buy CGC comics I’ve never submitted a comic book before
Damn sounds like cgc is making out good $$$....personally I don't like books being cased in plastic...also, why in 2020 are "collector's" trying to collect new books and expect to flip them in the next year or two?? When we clearly know that generally it takes time and "factors" that make a book important/ valuable?....as difficult as it may be, no one is speculating what these new books would be 20 or 30 years from now, (2020/2030) Which to me personally will be "today's" market, just like the 60s, 70s, 80s market is 1990/2020
I agree, and I disagree.. For example, you say some comic books aren't worth having slabbed and graded. Well that might have been true at one time, but not now.. With all the new movies coming, and with them introducing new characters all the time books that used to be worth $5 are now worth $500! Like The Walking Dead for an example, there was a time when you could have got the #1 for just a couple of dollars, and now just look at it...
You are so wrong about using mint as a term to grade comics, that term is used now for all type or things that are not MInTed, go look up any sports card grading system sports card are not minted then why are does every grading guide use that term for carda
your right on alot of things but if you watch my videos i have alot of graded books because i want to pass them down to my kids when they get older i dont know if you ever thought of that but nice video please check mines out
I love your detailed explanation!! I bought 12 comic books on ebay cgc'd, at a whopping grading 10.0 A PIECE!! and they are all transformers!! I will be posting a video soon!!
Cgc is getting famous for grading 9.8's with handling damages Not printing flaws. Look at a copy walking dead 100 lucille edition ss 9.6 its got around 5 spine kink's that all break color . By overstreet guideline 's they cannot break color and should be barely noticeable . Look it up. Cgc is also pressing books for a small fee. Those books aren't getting a purple restoration label either . I see a wizard type scam here for collector 's who remember the day when You couldn't find a 9.4 out of 300 copies back when wizard sold 9.8's like a water from a water fountain .
Mike Mays I bet whoever had that 10.0 was a frequent trafficker with Cgc because I bought a dozen new mutant 's 98 and mine are all flawless copies but bet You money I wouldn't get a 9.9 or 10 because I don't send hundreds books in for grading with Cgc every week . Look up comicsmonster on ebay You will see a pattern and also nycomics on ebay both have tons 9.8's 9.9's 10 .0's and this is 1st one of these I've ever signed ss such a scam .
Money stays where it has always been my friend! With the wealthy. I'm sure I have a 10 somewhere withing my collection, but I doubt I will ever know! Wish I had a dozen of NM#98 you musta got a good deal when you got them!
Its Usually The dealer 's who let their friends search new inventory if they don't themselves. I've got an on and off relationship with local shops for that reason alone

Alison Armstrong this dude wasn’t too bright with that comment lol I thought the same and looked here in the comments to see if it was just me lol

still a great video after all these years, important history
This is exactly what I was looking for, I was not sure how the whole CGC thing worked. Thanks for the explanation!

@@LordByron610 you can go to the CGC website and there are 3 total options for getting books graded.

Thanks for going into so much detail. I am so far down the comic book rabbit hole right now 😅

If money isn't an issue, and it makes you feel good to own them slabbed, I say go for it.
If you getting a 1:100 at $35, you can make some good money by slabbing it, and putting it on EBAY.
Is there anything inside those sealed plastic grading cases with the comic? You'd think, without unbuffered acid free paper to absorb some of the acidity, the comics would disintegrate over time.
+525Lines They insert a sheet inside the book.
A very informative video, Thanks for sharing, very well done.
Thanks for your comments .
Lol i like your editing and humor great info
Some sobering statements here...thank you
If I have a comic in bad condition missing the front cover but does have the back cover but is detached what grade should the comic be??

SSJFutureGohan62093 If you don't mind what's the general location he was in when he sold them? I've had very little/no success
They are simple cheap, that's all. ( I mean most shops and their owners)

You don't make much sense

appraise a home for $50000 costs the same as appraising one for $400,000..So why does it cost more to grade comics over $3000 and higher????
its a scam....the cost of grading should not vary based on the value of the book, it's pure robbery
@@bws205 They are the king of grading, its up to them to decide how to run the show, after all these years.
