How cute. I just love dachshunds. I have two miniature dachshunds named Megan & Kellee. Megan is a pure 100% Miniature Dachshund Tan/Black, and Kellee is half a Dachshund and Shih-Tzu. But, has the dachshund body and features, but the hair on her is long and her snout isn't that long like a typical dachshund. But, all-in-all, they are the most sweetest girls me and my husband has ever had. We love them both immensely. They also go everywhere with us when we travel. They love to travel and are great in the car when we travel for long distances. My first dog was a Dachshund/German Shepherd, and he looked like a German Shepherd but with a body of a regular size dachshund.
I love the way he eats, then drinks, then goes back to eating again, like humans do. He is gorgeous. Just wish you would go back to doing more videos of him.
So cute! I see he is chewing on a squeaky plushie. My 11 year old female doxie goes for the ears first, then eyebrows, and saves the legs for last. Her stuffed animals only last a day.

wow you guys were able to train him at just 9 wks of age that's amazing! My Sammy took a while to potty train on weepad. He mastered it by 10 mos of age. He's a yr now so he knows how to potty out doors and in doors perfectly no more accidents. I had a dapple long haired mini also but she passed last yr. Love Dachshunds, they are the only breed of dogs I've owned and love.

There is nothing that beats a silver dapple longhaired Dachsie! I have two at the moment (and four other Dachsies) and I have had two others before. But none of them has been half so obedient as Toby! He is simply adorable.

Hi, I have just brought home a 8 week old miniature dachsund. Toby is much like him! How did you teach him to fetch his toy? My puppy is quite stubborn! Any times appreciated! Thanks
We found that the quicker we responded with at treat when Toby would do something we wanted the better it helped him retain what was being taught. So my advice would be to try to reward within 5 seconds of the pup doing something correctly. Also learning fetch with a favorite toy will help the pup desire to go after it. Hope that helps!

Hello, We started at 8 weeks with puppy pads. We actually had him trained to potty on puppy pads for about 8 months. We would put 1 pad in our guest bathroom and Toby always knew that was his place to potty. It was awesome because he was kind of trained like a cat in that regard. We could let him roam the house free while we were gone and he would always potty on his pad in the bathroom. This worked great until he became sexually mature. Then he began marking around the house so we moved him strictly to outdoor potty at that point. If we had neutered him perhaps he would have been fine with the pads his whole life. We didn't neuter him because we hope to breed him at some point. Once they mature they become territorial and marking is 2nd nature at that point. I would recommend Crate training to establish the location that you want Sinatra to potty. Consistency is key!
I had a male LH dapple dachshund for 13 very short years. I now have a long haired piebald rescue doxie. All amazing and comedic. I know a lot of doxies from meet-ups and just the love for each one. I want to add some important advice about potty training. It really is imperative whether or not you neuter or keep them in tact , of course with the boys especially that you avoid utilizing puppy pads. You will have more than likely a dog that starts to pee and or mark in your house and other people's homes. Nightmare! My male was initially crate trained from the breeder and that is key too that your puppy come from a breeder that takes the time and has a crate training protocol to their breeding program. Try to find that out. I avoid any breeder who puppy pad "trains" The key is if you can, take the dog outside to potty. At the time, I had a spare bathroom that I just put a baby gate on with my little boy pup. He was amazing and always did his biz outside. The only time he was naughty was if we went to someone elses home whose dogs were problematic indoor pee-ers and he did mark where they'd go. So I learned to avoid bringing him where there were indoor peed homes. Don't let any behavior training lax with a doxie --the first 16wks I read are the crucial time in which they (any puppy) form habits. Socialize your dog during this time , crate and potty train them etc...as well...and keep socializing them....
I agree, if we could do it all over again we would have Crate trained and used the outdoors exclusively as his potty location. He did so well with the bathroom puppy pad location for the first 8 months but it didn't last. Toby has adapted well to going outside now and he doesn't have marking problems in the house anymore. I do agree with your experience- if we take him to a house that has been marked a lot Toby seem to be tempted to mark. Thank you for the comment!
I worked in dog rescue for years. When potty training a puppy the rule of thumb is this: Their baby bladders can only hold it one hour for each month of their age. So you can't expect say, a 3 month old puppy to hold their urine for an entire workday. Example: 2 months = 2 hours, 6 months = 6 hours. At 8+ months it's 8 hours. So if you're crate training, keep this in mind. Bcus they can't hold it so long when they're babies. And dogs HATE going where they sleep if they have an accident in their crate. We used a large baby crib with sleeping area & water on one side, & piddle pads on the other side. Only for the very young infant stages. Then we would introduce crate training 1 to 2 hours at a time. It worked GREAT. Mine is 16 years old now & has always been wonderfully house trained using this method.
