New York comedian Dave Smith says he "became a libertarian through the Ron Paul movement. "He challenged all of my preconceived notions about what government was [and]...inspired me to read all of these people, like Rothbard, Mises, and Friedman."
When Bernie Sanders became a national figure, what Smith hated most about the Vermont senator was that he was aesthetically like a carbon copy of Paul-"a kind of disheveled, older guy who's just a truth teller."
"[The difference was that] Bernie would go around to these kids and be like, 'Hey, so you're a college kid in 2017, you're among the richest, freest, most privileged people who have ever existed, [so] billionaires should be paying your bills for you'...It was the difference between a propagandist and a truth teller."
Smith, 34, is a regular on the New York City stand up circuit and hosts two popular podcasts on the GaS Digital Network, Legion of Skanks and Part of the Problem. On September 11, he'll release his first comedy special, Libertas, which will be available for download here. You can watch teaser clips of the special here and here.
Smith sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie to talk about how Trump manipulates the left, why the media's reaction to the Syria bombing was "the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life," how to turn millennials libertarian, and his decision to have alt-right lightning rod and "racist shock jock" Christopher Cantwell as a recent guest on his podcast.
"I have to play this left-wing game," Smith says. "When I go on a Fox News panel with...a CIA killer, or somebody who's advocating for the next war...I never get accused of being chummy with them."
Edited by Mark McDaniel. Cameras by Jim Epstein and Andrew Heaton.
It's never too late for some Lysander Spooner, Rothbard, or some Bastiat.
Dave is great at being interviewed.
The alt right was over with trump since Syria bombing the first time

What position do you think I am in?
Love the interview, but one issue I had was with the commentary on the mens rights movement. They kind of casually claim mens rights activists advocate for affirmative action for men. I don't believe this is the case, and I don't recall ever hearing a MRA asking for this. Most issues are about child custody and divorce law, the disposability of males by the state (i.e. the male-only draft), and gender discrimination in courts (i.e. men get 60% harsher convictions than women for the same crime). I have seen MRAs use the absurdity of having male affirmative action in female denominated schools as an argument against female affirmative action, so they may have misheard a something like that.
A lot of "MRAs are just as bad as feminists" are based off of meninists. Meninists will openly state they are deliberate parodies of third wave feminists. They just flip the wording around. When someone gives examples of MRAs wanting special protections they are usually referencing, meninists or some random guy on the internet who has no affiliation of the MRM.
Watched that doc Red Pill and I'm with it. I think bad is the standard... an unexamined life is the standard... we feel good doing good things because we know that not everyone would because the standard is to just pass by.
I just want another Harry Browne. A clean, sharp, CLEAR voice for my ideals... Presidential as FUCK. That's what I want.
Browne, Perot and Paul were the triumvirate of awesome, sensible, feasible Libertarian candidates. Gone are those days. The only legit libertarians left aren't politicians, or they exist in the Republican party as a means of staying relevant (the Pauls, Massie etc).
Sucks, but it's what we have to work with now, and I'm certainly not opposed to the whole "working within the ____ party" idea so long as that party isn't the neocon rendition of the Republicans that dominated from the late 70s up until Trump's presidency. Maybe we can have a new Republican (or newly named) party dominated by right libertarians and constitutional conservatives.

Love Dave Smith, makes me miss RedEye :(
I just wanted to add to this already half decade old video that in addition to those like Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman I think John Stossel has done an enormous service in exposing people to Libertarian ideas, I missed out on the Ron Paul movement because I was too young but John Stossel is what exposed me to Libertarian ideas. I know he does a lot of work trying to get Libertarian ideas into classrooms as well which is phenomenal.

I love how Dave Smith talks. Pee-pal, princi-pawl
I pride myself on impressions, and I just can't get Dave's pronunciation down. Truly unique voice.
Great job Dave.

Hard to watch when this guy is interrupting Dave every other second with some off-topic nonsense. A joke here and there is fine but damn.
How can one complain about Trump and think Gary Johnson was not a clown? Gary Johnson said some of the dumbest things completely ignored by Libertarians.
Why is the camera right on top of Dave Smiths face and 2 feet back from the interviewer

I like Dave but I think he's wrong that both trump people and anti trump people don't have a sense of humor about things. All the trump people I know are pretty hilarious
Lol it funny watching this March of 2020. Dave I'm a fan but you got it wrong on just about everything you're talking about. Lol
It'd be funnier if he weren't so confident in his ignorance.
This guy nails my attitude to Trump entirely. He's pretty ridiculous but he's successful because he makes his opponents behave ridiculous too.

It's so sad to see Tom talking about him like he's one of the bad guys.

@YYZpresto yeah, definitely props to Dave. Bc if cantwell got his way, Dave would be on a train on his way to Poland.
Dave is quite articulate but totally disagree with his not voting for Gary Johnson who had such a Libertarian approach to ineffective bills at the NM state level. I think his honesty and demeanor was so perfect for the presidency.
He should let Smith finish his thoughts more
What the hell is wrong with certain Host's who will ask a guest a question, and then continually interrupt them with jokes and other questions that don't pertain to the answer the guest is trying to give? What is the 'common good'? Do I get to decide, do you? I think the common good would include respect for individual liberty.
You still haven't told me who gets to decide. Do we vote, do we get a council of wise men and women, or should it be a supreme leader?
Voting is still manipulated by what gets voted on and how often.
The wisemen might be fools or corrupt.
A supreme leader could simply be insane.
So according to you the common good is 51% of the people ruling over 49% of the people, no thanks! How about just leave me alone?

Now if he only had the guts to spend less, instead of just borrowing more.
I admire Dave here for interviewing these much more controversial figures. It doesn't have to mean he at all endorse there viewers, to invite them on his show for a discourse. Reason's hit piece on the alt-right and light, was in some ways punching down. Rather than attacking Laura Southern, Milo y....., Gavin McGiness, Alex Jones, why not invite them to a conversation about their views. You may, of course, challenge them on what you dislike about their views, but there's common ground to be found here. A dialogue may even broaden that bridge of agreement, you might inspire them to change some of their views.
Just as in for example international affairs, we'd want to see America setting a liberty example by never cutting off trade and diplomatic relations with Cuba, b/c we argue we could have a positive impact this way, so could reason on other libertarian thinkers if you discussed with them rather than attacked them. Some people like Richard Spencer may beyond saving, but there's a lot of potential for powerful coalitions in that alt-light list y'all scrutinize.
Trump is the most funny president ever ! butt say what he thinks and do what he said and that is amazing !
I don't think there are very many fans of trump. People, even libertarians, voted against Clinton. If libertarians can't do better than Johnson we'll never win over voters.
As it stands today (for me) trump is worth it just for Gorsuch.
silveravnt, the LP has done everything in its (embarrassingly little amount of) power to alienate the smart, sane libertarians. It is a social club and containment chamber for the most self-righteous asshats and excruciatingly awkward kooks in the liberty movement, and the only thing that draws the occasional failed politician into the fold is the prospect of standing out as a comparatively big fish in a small pond. I'm not even sure the party is capable of reforming itself. Before Gary Johnson Round 2, I still considered myself a hopeful albeit frustrated capital "L" Libertarian, but now I prefer to identify as a small "l" libertarian Independent. I've had enough of the LP's political autism and buffoonery.
Sadly trump is going to win again.... sad
OY VEY SHUT HIM DOWN!
I liked Gary J even with the Gay Nazi cake issue(you do not have to bake a damn thing) so with that being said Gay Nazi cakes is not destroying America like war, nation building and corporate welfare. I am glad the supreme court over turned that ruling from Org or Wa (whatever commie state issued the ridiculous ruling). Seems like such a silly reason to vote or not vote for someone. The president really has nothing to do with court orders. I saw who he wanted for supreme court and appointees and saw nothing to fear.

I'm not exactly a libertarian, even though I lean towards it somewhat more than the average liberal/progressive/leftist (I'm like dead center), and while I'm agreeing most of the time with everything being said, I find a bit equivocated the near equiparation of "fascists/nazis/alt-rights" with "marxists". And not because I have any particular sympathy with marxist "economics", but rather with the morals, which are the much more liberal, humanitarian, libertarian-leaning one, in sharp contrast with the other side. In one side we have a preoccupation with the poor and disadvantaged (and yes, even "oppressed") that drives them to grab into things that are even economic wishful thinking, while the other see these same segments of the population as essentially the scum of the Earth, that would be better to disappear "somehow", usually not with friendly, humane means implied, when not explicitly negated. Even with the former ideology having ultimately been linked with a historically larger death toll in the end, and while there are even today comparatively minute segments promoting violence, this difference is still paramount.
"Marxists", or people often lumped with them (liberals, leftists) will reject "stalinism", "maoism" and the like, not only in their most direct totalitarian aspects, but even the economics (which are still arguably totalitarian, but also often defended with a veneer of voluntarianism, which is rarely the practical method). The other side, on the other hand will much more rarely express any bold rejection of Hitler and the European fascism in general. Their historical revisionism is more grotesque and blatantly contradictory; "it's not that a Jewish holocaust wouldn't be a good thing, only that Hitler, poor guy, didn't actually managed to do that, unfortunately; nevertheless, those despicable Jews pretend it happened in order to smear our reputation. If only we had killed them all so they wouldn't be able to smear our reputation saying we committed genocide".
There are indeed a few narratives of "Mao was such a nice guy", but it's comparatively much rarer, and seem to usually be something believed by people who don't actually aprove a bloody rise to power, but rather naïvely fantasize democratic implementation of a paradise-like utopic communism where everybody lives happily ever after.
While outcomes matter as much as intentions, it's interesting to take both into account. I see lumping "marxists"/leftists with stalinist/communist/socialist failures and murderous violence akin to the left's lumping of libertarians with crony capitalism and worse. Ironically, both groups incur in similar levels of denial or hasty dismissiveness of what those on the other side point as the "true face" or "dark side" of the ideology, narrowly focusing only on the most utopic ideals; the real world approximations just never achieved the idealized level of purity.
what is a ' CUK?"
Dave is cool but that other guy is a goof😂

Maybe it didn't come across here, but Dave is not even close to a moderate. He believes it's immoral to initiate force. That includes: taxes, the war on drugs, war in the middle east, and plenty of other things the US, state, and local governments are involved in every day.

The comedian stated he was 34 and didn’t bother voting. This is the big problem with our country. Shame on him.
And it’s easy for him to laugh at both sides when he was too lazy to wait in line and cast his vote.
He wasn't too lazy, he realized that both options were shit so he didn't vote. I did the same (on purpose), for the first time in my life. Looking back now if forced to vote, I probably would have taken the narcissistic, pussy grabbing, troll in chief over the sociopathic, war monger.

That is ridiculous.
White nationalists reject freedom of movement and association. Ergo, they aren't libertarians, even right-wing libertarians.
Libertarians need to stop using hyperbole and guilt tripping at alt righters and just explain libertarianism to them
Most alt righters know about the non aggression principle, they just do not agree with it. That is not the foundation of their morality.

Utilitarianism is not self contradictory and is mutually exclusive with the NAP
Christian sin based ethics is only contradictory in its implementation and is mutually exclusive with the NAP.
Alt right ethno-collectivist ethics is not self contradictory and is mutually exclusive with the NAP.
There are plenty of people who disagree with the non aggression principle not just in practice but in principle. Including the alt right.
