  • Hippo Tang always have a special place in my heart. Ever since I rehomed the baby hippo tang that was in the 45g years ago, I have always wanted to keep another one when I have the right system. Even though the 4 foot long 135g may not be able to host this hippo tang for his entire life, I look forward to sharing my home with him for at least a few awesome years!
    This week we also unboxed a care package from Reef Nutritions. Chad sent over some Apex Pods to help seed my systems, as well as TDO Chroma Boost of various sizes for me to try out. So far the fish are loving the Chroma Boost!
    Lastly I put my DIY skills to the test by build a skimmer stand... it went OK...!

    Glad you mentioned that Hippos need big tanks. They are big, they are fast, they crash into things, they are ick magnets and they beat the hell out of each other if you try to keep more than one.
    Yours is beautiful. Good luck with him and good luck finding him a big new home when he outgrows yours.

    Hi , great channel , love the vids and the tanks, try soaking 1 feed a day in garlic juice, put a cube of frozen in a fish net , put the fish net in a cup of tank water with the garlic juice and let it defrost for as long as u want , when ready pick the net up , and in the net garlic food, mysis, brine etc, and in the cup the phosphate enriched water that doesn’t foul your tank , I kept multiple tangs over the years and this was the hack that made it possible without whitespot

    Hi moki, it's me nano tank addict! The white spots on healthy blue hippo tangs are actually bruises that they get from sleeping in and around the rock work! At night they will nestle themselves in weird and tight nooks and crannies in the rock and sleep. When they move around their sleeping spots they'll get bruises in the shape of those white spots. I hope this info helps you!

    Keep your eye on the white spots, the disappearance and reappearance of white spot is how the disease works, once the parasite is in visible form on the fish they drop off into your sand bed, there’s an incubation period and then the release back into the water column, re-infecting your fish. I’m no expert on white spot or fish disease, but I suffered a total tank whiteout when introducing a yellow eye kole tang. It started exactly like this, about 3 spots and then all clear for 2 weeks, when all of a sudden it exploded. Be extremely vigilant over the coming weeks, if white spots reappear, remove all fish and treat immediately, it’s a sad lesson I learnt the hard way. I read a large amount of online content where I’d convinced myself it must have just been some sand on the fish, I’d also read it’s normal in tangs to show “stress spots” this is sadly not true, if spots reappear you have white spot in your system, and the only solution is treatment in a QT tank. I didn’t follow this kind of advice and chose to follow the guidance I wanted to hear or read. Love your content, fingers crossed nothing comes back 👍🏻

      Is it better to place a hippo in the tank first?

    • @tomc4607
      @tomc4607 3 года назад +1

      Shasha2322 it’s best to put a tang in last I’ve found. Obviously sometimes that isn’t possible if you’ve had several fish die and only the tang is left, but tangs are the bullies of the reef keeping world, by putting them in last you’re not putting new fish into “tang territory”. Hope this helps

    I had a baby blue hippo tang that had a couple white spots and was really adjusting but then a couple days later it was full of ich and it was horrible. The ich killed the hippo tang and two of my other fish so I would be very very careful. Maybe put in some ich-x or something to prevent or stop anything that can happen.

  • @scottclark7592

    I am always wary of people who claim QT-and hats off if they can do it right! When I had a shop we had individual off the system tanks for QT- a period of time with no additions to the system-observation and treatment. Super labor intensive.

    Hey ive gone through this with both my hippos and they lived every one of them but at the beginning and sometimes randomly get white spot only them for that I do herbal ick on food soaked once a day but I think they go away on there own regardless . Its like if hippos are prone to it easily with stress but it can be like if tank is to small and they hate skimmer bubbles if it is in the main display it irritates them same as the corals at times. Ull see then rubbing on rocks but none the less just keep feeding. I know its that cuz if it's the same as me they will be eating and u and I know with ick they stop eating and sometimes stop swimming as much. U might want to do nori it seems to help them get rid of it faster like if it boost up immune response.
