Alkatronic + Dosetronic = Automatic Alk Testing! Lazy Reefer's Dream! (135g - 6/7/2020)

  • Two biggest pains of keeping a reef tank in my book: water test & water change. Today, we will partially eliminate one of the pains with the Alkatronic monitoring the Alkalinity level of the 135g MODE Aquarium, and followed up with dosing from the Dosetronic. At the moment the Alkatronic is not driving the Dosetronic in terms of dosing amount, but once the Alk is sitting at the targeted dKH, I will be flipping the switch so the Alkatronic will have full control over the dosing as well depending on the tank's level. Enjoy the video!
    * Alkatronic & Dosetronic are sponsored by Focustronic to use on the 135g build; I promise all opinions are 100% genuine. 🤓

    Thing which is very rarely compared with all these testers is ongoing costs, ease of supply and "lifespan" of supplies. Reagent for example and the KH Director has the ph probe which would need to be replaced after a while. If people have either a Profilux or an Apex the choice between systems is normally obvious for them. Something I didn't see you do is a manual check to compare result with the alkatronic which is something I would recommend people do with any automatic tester. Personally I have the KH director along with the Profilux 4 controller (Apex isn't available in this country but I think I would have gone with GHL anyway). Really impressed with it. The ability to be anywhere and see results via the web and potentially make changes in dosing when away from home could be useful for many (also on apex controller). People should also look at upgrading paths. Who knows, maybe I'll add a calcium reactor in future and the ability to control that may be of importance. I know it's possible for the KH director, not sure about others. Will also be looking at the ION Director when it becomes available and other people have some experience with it. Should be noted that ION director doesn't look as though it will do phosphate.

    I really want alkatronic. Currently just using a Hannah checker for alk. There is a lot of reason why I want the alkatronic over say the trident. To be honest I don’t need to test calc and mag as often as Neptune forces you to. I like that it’s compatible with apex but the reagent shortage is an issue from what I see and the skewed test results when the reagent is low. I really like how you put the reagent back into the tank and not need a waste collector

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  4 года назад +1

      I had a clip of breaking down why I went with the Alkatronic vs. the other auto-testers on the market, but I didn't think it would be fair since I have had no personal experience with the other units so it would be mostly speculation. I would love to compare notes with other auto-tester users to get some real life experience! The Trident reagent shortage at the moment is also one of my reasons for going with the Alkatronic, otherwise the Trident also looks to be a very easy to use and capable unit that a lot of people already love!

    • @wilsonline90
      @wilsonline90 4 года назад +1

      @@InappropriateReefer Good thing about Trident is that it's linked to the apex, so you have everything showed in one screen, lights, pumps, doser, tests, everything.
      Yeah, the reagent is expensive and there is no need to test Ca and Mg twice a day. That's ridiculous. But I do feel the need to test Ca. That said I don't think the precision on Trident for Ca is ideal, it's 15 ppm, ideally should be 5 ppm or better. And I had no issues to find the reagents, I mean to find the small package. I didn't buy it bc I want the 6 months pack which is cheaper and yeah, that one was missing in my lfs.

    Mastertronic?! If I were to get an autotester I would definitely go with this one. The fact that you can put the waste water back into your tank and not have to worry about salinity is huge! Some of the other testers take quite a bit of water to test your parameters. To be able to monitor nitrate and phosphate would be amazing! Those color test are so difficult to distinguish (especially phosphate) between the subtle shades. Great video! Cant wait to see how it works out for you.

      Reefbot has draw backs also. Test kit reagents must be liquid . And with kits that use multiple, then you're using multiple slots which limit the number of elements that can be tested. Also, waste water cannot be put back into tank so you have to watch salinity more.

    Just be aware that all these auto testers have their own quirks and issues over time. I have both the Reefbot (NO3, PO4, Mg, Alk-Backup)) and KH Guardian (Alkalinity)and they are dependent on the accuracy of the pumps (which do wear) and the pH Probe accuracy (needs calibration). I would always have several different tests to verify that the numbers make sense. Since i still have Hanna checkers and manual test kits I keep double checking every so often to build confidence.

    I'm waiting for the Seneye Coral which should be amazing and heaps cheaper than the rest. It's the only one I can really afford (and I think it will be affordable for 90% of reefers and be a game changer.
    But...
    I'm considering the GHL if I can save the funds - I think GHL is reliable and I think it's the cheapest... here's why.
    1 - It's standalone (and cheaper than the Alkatronic)
    2 - It has 4 dosers but only uses 3 - so I can dose Alk with the 4th one.
    3 - I will make All-4-Reef - so I would only be dosing a 1 part - so I save money on buying a 4 / 5 head doser
    4 - I think GHL makes the most solid hardware in this space.
    (I am only concerned about the difficulty in setting it up).
    If I do the maths I guess the Seneye with the Webserver as I would get leak dectors too) will be about $650.
    The GHL Director is $850. So if I want to go all in with the Seneye Webserver and get a Ecotech Doser I'm paying the same and I don't get the auto dosing.
    The Seneye though will have a PAR meter and do temp, pH and water level - all things I need. The Seneye really is a no brainer particularly if you just want to monitor and then adjust your dosing accordingly.

    • @mitchelhayes8158
      @mitchelhayes8158 4 года назад +1

      Be careful of buying something SOLELY because it is considered cheaper. Yes the Alkatronic reagent long-term cost isn't much at all, but if I'm not mistaken, you will have additional expenses with the GHL unit that you may not be aware of, like needing to also buy their doser as well.

    • @sunnygoold9449
      @sunnygoold9449 4 года назад

      @@mitchelhayes8158 Thank mate - Well with the GHL there are probes and reagent (and more expensive than the Alkatronic). But with the GHL it comes with the doser and uses 3 of the 4. I dose 1 part so I don't need to buy another doser (with the Alkatronic I would). All 3 are solid options really and most people dose at least 3 part I would say. Thing about the Alkatronic is that CoralVue sells it (and they are quality) and Reefdudes tested multiple versions and chooses this one. Issue with the Seneye with a Versa is that Seneye won't control dosing and Versa you cannot control remotely. Positive with the Seneye combo is it's probably much cheaper to replace a component of the system should 1 break.

      If I can save you the effort you should really just get the Alkatronic. I have had mine since they were first released and the unit just works. Reagent cost is soo minimal it's not even fair to the other testers on the market. Support is decent and the unit is so easy to maintain. I have 2 of them and compared to the Trident/KH Guardian Pro, I'd choose the Alkatronic every time hands down EVEN with the Trident also testing Cal/Mag. I PAID for mine so no sponsorship from me telling you this.
      I have had both the Trident/KH Guardian Pro so this isn't something that I am just recommending because it the POPULAR opinion. It's just better. Trident felt like a cheap kiddy toy comparitive to the KH GUardian/Alkatronic. Proprietary reagents for the Trident also was a concern. Not only that with the Trident, but also Trident doesn't work if/when your Apex decides to take a nose-dive.

    With the IOND, KHD and two Doser with 4 pumps, you can control all important parameters and also dose a two part solution.
    I only have to be patient with the new IOND, but in a couple of month my system will be complete automated.
