Thank you for posting this. I wish every hobbyist had to watch this before purchasing their first fish. I've been a retailer over 20 years & I've always purchased from wholesalers like this who bring in responsibly collected fish. We pay more for them (every hand that touches these fish have to be paid too!) & I'm happy to pay for fish I know will live not only in my facility but in the forever homes I sell them to. If only every retailer of these animals were made to be certified in healthy systems, trained in proper acclimation & care programs we'd see a much lower death rate. Though I'm a firm believer that the food industry is a much greater threat to our wild populations (notice how the dynamite was NOT used for the aquarium hobby in this video) & other industries like cruise lines & environmental threats like pollution, silt runoff from deforestation & more, we CAN keep these beautiful animals responsibly for many, many years. I recently donated a Desjardini Sailfin Tang to the New England Aquarium in Boston I personally owned 18 years because she outgrew my biggest tank - a 220g. My core business is aquaculturing soft corals grown from parent stock here on location but I augment it with everything reef safe, from fish to all kinds of inverts. I teach people how to setup my healthy system that kept my Sailfin (& many others) alive for so many years. I only sell what I use myself so others can expect the same results. My facility also serves as a visitor destination where they can sit on couches in front of my huge reef tanks. Many have never seen these animals alive in person. They leave me with a new awe & respect for our unseen ocean life which I hope leads to a better awareness of needing to protect them from environmental issues. Hobbyists need to stop buying by price or free shipping alone. You truly get what you pay for. Shopping from a retailer who cares like I do is your best chance for success... & the success of these little ones.
That’s pretty much what this channel is about giving the proper information to people so they can be aware and choose based on their knowledge and not rely on a biased retailer that’s looking for a quick sale our hobby is definitely advancing, we are aqua-culturing more and more fish, corals & inverts every year, these advancements are helping the hobby not rely on the wild reefs and helping them recover from bleaching etc,
a good responsable wholesaler/retailer is the way to go im glad you are taking that initiative keep up the good work

It’s not impossible, they just can’t do it in a small aquarium they breed them in very large circular tanks with schools of pacific blue tangs

I am from Indonesia and saltwater hobbyists. After I watched this video, I feel sad that people doesn’t realize it takes long time for the fish to repopulate. Leave the fish alone and if people want to see the reefs, people can fly to Indonesia and dive to enjoy them. As a hobbyist, I make sure all my fish is captive breeding.

Totally agree. I only try top purchase tank bred fish for this reason. This hobby made me so aware of our impact on the planet and climate change. We need to stop depleting our resources and burning fossil fuels.

but this does seem to be the least harmful way of sourcing wild fish, and if it brings money to the area, it does at least help stop the local people from resorting to dynamite fishing to earn money.

Thank you for posting this. It is important for people to see where their pets come from, so they have a better idea of how they can help us conserve the wild populations. Right now it is impossible to breed most Blue Tangs in captivity (although a select few facilities have managed it) so if you own one, it most likely came from the ocean. As we can see from the video some methods of doing this are more sustainable than others, but no matter how good your aquarium set up is it can never compare with the actual ocean. Blue Tangs also have a large migration that they undertake so it is very important for your pets to have a large area to travel in, which usually means tanks that are hundreds if not thousands of gallons large. Please keep all this in mind before purchasing one, or another species with a similar situation.

Andrew Teng I disagree we shouldn’t get those animals from their wild environment make them a captive in our tanks.
As a hobbyist about to start my very first saltwater tank, my hope is to have at least 2/3 of my fish captive bred and for 100% captive bred corals. I can easily get captive bred clowns (Ocellaris, Percula, Tomato, Cinnamon, Clarkii, Fire etc.) even in China, and I hope that my LFS will have the imported ORA Yellow and Randall’s or McNeill’s Assessors. If I go for something like a Flame Angel, I would much prefer one collected in Hawaii or Polynesia / Melanesia as they’ve got higher survival rates than the ones collected in Indonesia and Philippines.
I am all for the captive breeding of eventually most or all marine fish species, because though I love the hobby I also want to preserve our planet’s coral reefs. There are many saltwater fish collected in Indonesia and the Philippines using cyanide. Great countries with great people but they’re the devil when it comes to the saltwater hobby. Sure there are some who argue that we should not implement total captive breeding, and that there should be a place for wild-caught fish as they provide a living for people in certain coastal communities of those countries, but as selfish as this sounds, their livelihood’s not my foremost concern. It’s their country and their government’s job, my wish as a hobbyist is just to make sure that I and my fellow hobbyists in the mean time (and the future) get the best and healthiest specimens possible.
If captive breeding does indeed strip them of their jobs, then too bad. Again, that’s not my concern. My concern are the fish and the coral reefs, those collectors who use cyanide and other poor methods should be stopped using whatever means possible. Whatever happens to their lives is their country’s president’s job, not mine. Again. I just care about my livestock and that of my fellow hobbyists.
I’m all for captive breeding across the world.
I’m totally willing to pay more for a piece of livestock if it was captive bred or collected using better methods. We all have a responsibility for creatures under our care. If anything, these little fish may not reach their maximum lifespans in the ocean due to predators and our destruction of coral reefs.
With out the hobby humans would care even less about the oceans. And we know what that means, far more dead animals! Respect the efforts of all these people to make a living and fulfill a need. Great work on the video.

Captive bred will usually survive better anyway, It's not a good idea to take from the wild unless you're doing it for breeding purposes. But fish taken from the wild will often not get used to captivity and refuse to eat as well as get sick.

What beautiful fish they are in the ocean! It broke my heart a little whenever I saw all of the baby blue tangs in the net and all of the other fish but I just can’t feel like being hopeless because even though there is options to buy in captive breeding I don’t think everyone knows about it. But the public whenever they want something they’ll get it without knowing the consequences.

Nemo (clownfish) are no longer being taken from the wild they are mostly bred in captivity
Out of 500-1000 eggs maybe 2 survive to adulthood in the wild taking eggs and having breeding programs is the sustainable way to do it
Although collection methods and education have improved considerably, it is still a shame what these wild caught fish and other organisms endure on their long and arduous journeys to our tanks. Many do not make it. I am all in favor of captive breeding programs.

The idea is to reduce the reliance on harvesting from the ocean. But then again - who needs dogs, cats, birds and fish for pets when we can have free range spiders, mice, roaches, silverfish and flies around the house for our pleasure instead..

My yellow mimic tang probably went through this. It’s sad to see, I can’t imagine how stressful it was for him. My tank will never be his natural home. He’s such a character. I take care of him the best I can. I really hope more species can be tank bred to stop this.

Es ist wesentlich besser traditionell von Hand und mit Netz gefangene Fische zu exportieren und damit dem Dynamitfischen und dem Fischen mit giftigen Substanzen als Einnahmequelle den Boden zu entziehen!
Die größten Umweltzerstörer sind wir, die Bürger und die Industrie in Europa und den USA!
Auf einen Inselstaat gibt es nunmal sehr wenige Möglichkeiten sich sein tägliches Brot zu verdienen und essen müssen auch die indonesischen Fischer und ihre Familien!
Es ist immer leicht und vor allem sehr bequem über andere den Stab zu brechen, vor allem, wenn man im Wohlstand und sozialer Sicherheit in seinen komfortablen Fernseh-Chefsessel sitzt.
Wären unsere industriellen Fischfangflotten nicht mit Lizenzen korrupter Regierungen vor fremden Küsten unterwegs und würden den einheimischen traditionellen Fischern mit kleinen Booten die Grundlage ihrer eigenen Existenz entziehen, hätten diese Fischer Brot und Lohn und die Piraterie könnte etwas mehr eingedämmt werden. Industriestaaten mit solch zweifelhaften Fischereilizenzen sind ebenfalls Piraten!

People are making great strides in captive breeding programs and coral propagation because the animals have value. If we weren't importing them, their only value would be for food and they would quickly be wiped out like the guy in the beginning blasting the reef with dynamite.

I'm just glad that this company takes extra steps to prevent capturing fish with cyanide. What is the companies website, I cant find them on google, would love to buy from these guys rather than my LFS since they are super expensive.

Besides you would need to apply for import permits and if you are buying over 7 you would need a importing license
There are some online companies that purchase sustainably call them and see how they are purchasing sustainably

It is mentioned in the video that taking larger fish is taboo and not common they were shooting a film for a German tv channel so they showed the proper way of catching a fish (no cyanid dynamite etc)

I’ve been in the hobby for a few years now, I’ve only brought tank breed fish.. leave the poor tangs in the sea where they look more beautiful, buy tank breed people, it will support the breeders who breed the fish but more importantly the ecosystems of our beautiful oceans..

How many fish are you able to catch at a time with that net?
Most sustainably caught fish are caught one by one then transferred to a bucket or bag
The typical way to catch fish is to drop a net around the fish you are targeting and scare them into it they get tangled in the net you remove them and but them into the bucket
The fish caught with the net was to show how to sustainably catch fish without Cyanide or other damaging practices

This is my big question there are many fishes introduced into aquariums from sea to oceans to tanks at home.
But why the aquariums industry are not making beautiful sea shells and its different varieties into aquariums. Yes there are but only a few which are used only for cleaning crew. Yes, but there are beautiful sea shells of different colours and shapes and sizes and various designs which we put into homes as souveniers but imagine putting these creatures or introducing them into aquariums would be very good business. Because these shells are so nice. I always look for these shells if they are available in aquariums but no, only a selected fews are available. This is so sad. Why are these not introduced???? Is my question.

I love freshwater tanks. Moreover reef tanks. But this is the reason why i will never have the second. I refuse to have fishes coming from wild life.

Please look for ways to breed Indonesia beautiful marine fish. Could you build new big coral reef. Or you can see fish at sea using sub marine of Genting Dream Cruise. We are ready at North Bali. My hobbies is breading beautiful Lovebird.
