    Hi Max, fixing that gib is very relevant to me right now, and saving that DSG is a service to the nations. In a very minor way I had the same experience with a Mercer inspection stand my friend said "do you want it?" and I said no. Then he said he would scrap it and I said "no you won't!". It would be a crime to scrap the DSG. You can get them quite cheaply here now but the issue is space and 3 phase (mine is just a home shop). Cheers

    I’m new to your channel, I’ve watched a dozen or so of your videos so far, and like your no nonsense approach. Love the old DS&G. I don’t know if it’s been suggested, but the damage may have been from clattering with materials from an overhead crane, as it was in a railway workshop. I worked in a shop with a big overhead crane, previously used for vessel building and saw a lot of damage from careless use.

    Hi Max, my Mum in Perth and Brothers are complaining about the cold.
    My DSG 13x42 was built in 1954, I got the date verified by a DSG agent in North Freo, back in 1995, He sent the serial no to DSG UK and they had records of the lathe.
    Imported by Gilbert and Lodge and used by the PWD in Perth.
    I was only 2 years old when she was unloaded from the ship in Freo wharf!!!
    She had a rear mounted 5 HP Crompton Parkinson motor, UK made.
    Had a Matrix clutch driving through the gearbox and then through 5 B section link belts, Brammer belts.
    One pulley had built in eccentrics to loosen or tension belts, pretty clever.
    I think the belts were designed for better finish and good shock absorption for interrupted cuts.
    Of course the feed gears were mounted on the spindle.
    Your change gearbox for feed shaft and leadsrew looks the same, chain driven internals.
    That beast will remove metal at ease.

    • @willemvantsant5105
      @willemvantsant5105 Год назад +2

      Just to clarify the chain in the feed gearbox is attached to the knob which moves the selector in the gearbox.
      I know the internals very well after my 4 year old Daughter had played with the lathe while shutdown and engaged the half nuts, next morning started the lathe motor and engaged the clutch, horrible noise, the carriage hit against the support for feed and leadscrew casting.
      Stripped 2 gears, one of them was internally splined, hardened and profile ground, had them remade by professional machine shop in Myaree.
      He was critical of the DSG design, crossfeed to short, allowing rocking, they did this to accommodate the power drilling attachment to clamp on the dovetails.
      Handy attachment with 4 MT taper.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  Год назад

      Give DSG a call, they might may have records back that far.
      I have some original manual pages for that machine, but not anything you don't have in the reprint copy.
      I wouldn't be surprised if it was lineshaft powered in its early life, I believe that generation of machines date from the late 1920's to 1949 / early 1950's when the new models were launched, but finding any definitive information is difficult.

    Hi Max, Midland Workshops opened 1904 and closed 1994.
    Would speculate she was lineshaft fed and electric motor added at a later date.
    Is the motor 50 Hz or 40 Hz, in the old days Perth ran on 40 Hz, maybe another possible reason she came without motor.
    If 40Hz will run happily on 50 Hz, more iron.
    I am guessing late twenties to early thirties for her age.
    Mine ran on Timken roller bearings up to 1800 RPM, barely hear it running.
    I occasionally rode a steam train to Mt Lawley Tech from Freo at the start of my Apprenticeship, memories.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  Год назад

      The motor was made here . I will check the Hz . It has had a test run when the wiring was checked by the previous owner . What worries me is if it was run with no spindle pre lube or inspection after sitting outside for so long .

      Bit of a worry with Babbit bearings I assume, if Bronze a little more tolerant without lube.
      Mine had an internal piston oil pump driven off a cam on the input shaft passing oil through a magnetic strainer to the spindle bearings and other critical areas plus sight glass drip indicator.

    love the brass knobs on all the gear change levers, this kind of quality just doesn't exist today, all the modern stuff is poor quality shit these days, and a lot of the time even this is a major understatement of the quality of machines made today.

    Oh hell Max that's not cold 4C is just a brisk morning! -40? now that's bloody cold..Heh Heh
    Worn gibs can and will drive you batty, If I ever encounter a broke one like you have I might just loose it completely! They guys with white coats and butterfly nets will have to haul me off!
    It does strike me odd that they left as much as the did behind the slot on the fat end. What is that an inch (25mm) ? That gib almost seems too long to begin with. Nevertheless, you can only mess with something for so long. If it works as it should I say run it! If complete rebuild is in the cards later, you can plan ahead some. Anyway progress is being made.
    A DSG eh? Even here in the US a DSG well regarded to those in the know. I am half Limey so I really like 'em. Cheers

    There are two DSG's less than 5 km from my home. Sadly, they have been used in a foundry, so they will be pretty worn and probably beyond economical rebuild.

    0:47 “Northern hemisphere “. Whoa, watch your words Max. That is only valid for that part of the world that considers itself to be the whole world. The rest of the northern hemisphere (“what rest?”, “shut up”) is metric or gradually turning to metric, yes, the UK is the latter. And strictly speaking you are using a non-standard as well, as the official standard for temperature is Kelvin. But hey, there is some wiggle room. Love your vids.

    Mate your stuff is bloody superb always top shelf engaging - there use to be a pommie tuber who loved DSG lathes - he use to do extremely large annular type boring with tools he use to make up himself - he went off line which was a pity after his business went arse up -
    listen mate are you interested in an extremely large tapping head with all attachments - it come out of a place in Bendigo that use to make 100mm howitzers of all things - got all the bits - yours free if the shipping is no more than a $100 - Ive had a lot of enjoyment out of your channel ands was about to scrap it but thought of your DSG lathe with huge tailstock.
