Thanks Dan . It was a big sigh of relief to see the condition inside . I bought that lathe from Melbourne , 3000 km away & only saw a short bit of video footage from the dealer with it running . 👍
Nice quality vid out of your new gear. Looks like the genius that worked over the apron and tailstock did not get into the headstock or gearbox, which is a GOOD thing. At 30:00 they just did the replenishment and didn't bother with the exchange (messy) part 6 or 7 times. 🤣🤣
The headstock looks good Max. The spindle bearing arrangement looks exactly the same as mine (my lathe is a Taiwanese copy of a Mazak). One thing I think you may have gotten wrong was the nut for adjusting the preload on the front and middle bearing assembly. I'm pretty sure the nut you were pointing to is used to hold the two gears on the spindle. The bearing adjustment nut is located behind the middle bearing (it looks like there is a sleeve between the nut and middle bearing) and I noticed it uses a set screw to lock it in place. This is where the bearing adjustment nut is located on my lathe. I'm not surprised with the Mazak name showing up in your manuals. I have yet to see a decent manual supplied with a machine made in Asia. To be fair I have an Elliot shaper and the manuals are awful as well. By far the best manuals I have ever seen were from American Tool Works. I ordered an original set from Bourne and Koch using the S/N of my radial drill and they are superb. I can use the parts manual as an disassembly/assembly manual as they are all sections views with clear labels. I assume the manuals would be that good for their Pacemaker lathes as well. I think you've got yourself a very good lathe. Thanks for the video. Ken
The new camera is amazing improvement. Looks like the lathe you have there is in excellent mechanical condition. Can't wait to see you use it in anger 👍👍😎👍👍
Hi, Max, the gopro 8 is a really good camera you will like it.If I Rember right the sight glass on the apron was very dirty as well. things are progressing along good in the new shop. Cheers
Hey Max, nice vid as usual. That's going to be a nice lathe once you've put the magic wand over it. Hopefully soon I'll be doing the same as you with my latest additions to the shop.
Great video Max, looks great through the GP8, was really easy to read the text in the manuals and good clear footage in the headstock. Looks like that lathe has turned out super nice!!! Doesn't it always take longer than expected when you're doing it right! Cheers👍👍
Another interesting video Max, good to see there's no damaged gears in the headstock, it looks amazingly clean and in good condition inside. I wonder if someone filled the gearbox up with the amount of oil required for the headstock lol. Looking forward to the repairs. Tony
Buen día amigo me gustó el vídeo yo trabajo tornero y también soy mecánico de torno ahorita estoy reparando un torno polaco es un Wafun Wroclaw de 1971 y lo estoy revisando 👍buen video
Hi Max, know all about overfill, my DS&G lathe was supposed to hold just over 4 litres of oil in the headstock, drained out 15 litres before use! The lathe used an external sight glass with a breather on the top, someone in it's previous life had put a 1/4" BSP plug so no vent to atmosphere and giving incorrect level indication, made a goose neck and solved the problem. The gears were running in the oil and being supplied by the oil pump! I suspect the stud gear sleeve on your lathe is not original, like you said no sign of wear.
Yes , not sure what direction i will do with the stud shaft . I will measure the splined adapter bore & make a decision from there . Might just make an oversize hardened stud shaft . A needle bearing set up in there would be good . 👍
Video quality looks great. I use two GoPro 7s myself. I shoot in 2.7k, linear mode - I hate the wide angle. The 2.7k lets me zoom in if i need to and still have good quality for 1080p video.
Cheers . Yes , the linear seems good . I have been using the narrow setting . I also picked up a wireless Rode , still have to figure it out ! There is another contraption you can get that will edit out background noises as well , might look into it in the future . 👍
Video looks good with your new GoPro. My head stock cover has an oil fill. Surprised yours does not. I emailed Jet to see if I could get a manual for my lathe. Waiting to hear back from them.
Hi Tom . If it is going to be a mission to put a filler hole in the oil tank then i will have to remove the headstock lid & fit one there . Hope not , as i want to mount a tool storage tray thing there . 👍
All good so far, good camera and images, good improvements on the lathe, good to see you again. That's a pretty consistent gail blowing out there, not so good. Take care mate, till next time. Chris.
That new camera works a treat Max. Hang on, did you say the wife mowed the lawn? I need to send mine over for some wife training 😂. Well it’s not bloody spring here in Melbourne mate. I’ve had the central heating on all day as it’s freezing 🥶. That lathe internals look good don’t they. Nice one Max. Cheers 🍻
Thanks . I have not checked that yet . Looks like there is not enough room for a sleeve . I might just make a hardened oversize shaft or see if there is a needle roller bearing that i can make fit . 👍
Very nice, thank you. You are truly doing a service for other people interested in this kind of thing. When i attempt to fill my Jr460 headstock oil poors from the TOP of reservoir behind the electronics cabinet (or in front if you stand where operator would be). I cant exactly investigate because we rely on this machine making parts, but the top most sight glass refuses to register because of leak and there is significant heat generation when using the fastest spindle speeds. Ive got plenty of pictures, but im honestly a little confused. I will try to investigate the oil pump that may be there today and verify it is in fact pumping oil onto the headstock gears. Any ideas Max?
Double check the oil level is not already above the sight glass . there is an open area of the reservoir for the return oil to drain back from the headstock as it is a dry sump system . If it is way over full oil will leak everywhere you say it is , when the oil heats up & expands . If it has had an incorrect spindle bearing adjustment , like too tight that can cause higher temps at max rev's . Also the sight glass on the front of the headstock is only for oil flow from the pump , the oil level is 4'' below the top of the reservoir behind the electrical box . Their is another sight glass there when looking from the tailstock end . Cheers 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop Thank you for the pointers! I did find the video you made showing your refurb on the headstock lube system. I'm not sure why it didn't hit in my search results, but it lead me to your extensive video library. Where were you able to acquire the manuals for the JFMT? Are the ebay manuals worth buying because I was told they are not very good and generalized instead of being machine specific.
Finally a break on this lathe in the most important part. Could you tell or show us how you cleaned out the sight glass? I need to do that on my lathe too. Did you do anything special to seal it when reinstalling it? Never had one out before. I believe mine is all metal? It is on a clausing colchester lathe.
With the sight glass , i let it soak in kero & just kept swirling it around . There is a stain on the inside that will not come off . I was careful not to damage the rubber too much & used Loctite gasket sealer to refit them . If your ones are all metal , some screw in . If it is a push in one , i would have a spare on hand . 👍
Nice one Max. Yes the Chinese do make quality stuff, but like everything, it all depends on how much one is prepared to pay. They will make anything according to a required budget
Thanks for sharing Max, it appears you have done well with the lathe purchase. It’s amazing that a reasonable inexpensive quantity machine in the hands of a bloke like yourself can and will pay for itself in as little as a couple of weeks pending work flow. Max your Al960B did do oil changes prior to running it from new ? I ask because I’m ordering the exact machine, my other lathe I bought from new Chinese12 x 600 the headstock was full of casting sand from new and did what sand will do.
Hi Max just thought i would let you know that we have a mazak lathe where i work and on the tail stock end it has a tag on it that says made in china under licence i will take a photo for you and send it if you like
That it would be very funny, we have just moved the lathe around to another factory we have when I get a chance I will go and take a picture of it for you and I'll post it on here ok
As I listen to the Max Lesson On Snakes, I'm thinking...... I'll keep living in the land where the air hurts my face for 6 months of the year.... Andrew
If there isn’t enough room for a bush, and it doesn’t look much worn, as it would take a lot of wear for that amount of play, is it possible that because these are fiber gears, they wanted that play? I’ve seen something similar in other equipment before. I’ve also wondered why manufacturers can’t just put a 90 degree in the oil drain, and even a small valve. I use those with small ball valves. In the 40 or so years I’ve replaced plugs with them there’s never been a single leak reported. It’s not as though they will notice the slight increase in cost with these industrial machines!
Hi Mel . I could not see why you would need extra play . On other lathes the same size that i have used in the past , the same fibre gear set up just had normal play . Planetary drives can have a lot of play , but they balance out when running . I agree with you about the drain fittings , some machines are shocking . 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop I’m just trying to understand why, if there’s little wear why it’s so loose. As I said, I’ve seen that on other machines with giver gears. It’s odd, I agree.
Funny story about the nameplates: After the war the Russians had snagged a couple of American B-29 bombers, which Stalin ordered copied down to the smallest detail; they had a real problem when it came to deciding whose emblems to paint on them. The aircraft were also a ton overweight because they had metric aluminium sheet that didn't match the American material. Neat work on the lathe, anyway; I know my little 7" one downstairs is big enough to be educational but who doesn't want something bigger?
Good story about the B-29's . There is another story , back in the 1930's . The Japanese were showing off to the English how small they could turn a piece of steel . They sent the sample to England where an English Toolmaker promptly drilled a hole through the centre & sent it back ! 👍
I think silastic was invented by an oil company , designed to leak so you have to keep buying oil to replace what pisses out ! - never had a gasket seal properly for any length of time when using the stuff 🤣. Switched to loctite master gasket and never had a leak again .
G'day Max. You must have been happy to see the excellent condition inside the machine. It's good to see the Chinese do a good job of copying the Mazak even the manuals they didn't even bother to redact the branding. Cheers Peter

Funny thing is , they are there but you never see them normally ! 👍
Whos blowing Gail outside? 🤣
Lol , that would be telling ! 👍
Just a little giggle, all these on the internet making a mess changing oils :D
Lol ! 👍
Do you think that Mazak licensed the rights for JFMT to make this lathe?
Interesting question , considering someone commented that some Mazac's were made in China under licence . 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop If it was a cheap knock off I wouldn't think so, but you're lathe is built very well.
i,m not a expert max, but 1,5 liters of oil in such a large garbox seems too little to me ?
cheers ben.
That's what i thought , after draining 10 L out . Lucky i had the manual to check ! 👍
I think silastic was invented by an oil company , designed to leak so you have to keep buying oil to replace what pisses out ! - never had a gasket seal properly for any length of time when using the stuff 🤣.
Switched to loctite master gasket and never had a leak again .
The loctite stuff is good . 👍
410 gauge Max.
Lol , for the snakes !!! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop 🤣
G'day Max. You must have been happy to see the excellent condition inside the machine. It's good to see the Chinese do a good job of copying the Mazak even the manuals they didn't even bother to redact the branding.
Cheers
Peter
Cheers Peter . I am usually bagging out the Chinese stuff , but they did well with this one ! 👍
Comin along, a little field adjustment when required never hurts. Thanks for the look and your time.
Cheers . 👍
