    Hi Ron, I really enjoy your podcasts! On a recent podcast reviewing the 500 S&W, you asked for feedback from anyone that has scoped one. I have one with an 8 3/8" barrel that I won at a dinner hosting volunteer hunting instructors in Connecticut. My eyes aren't that sharp anymore, so I topped it with a
    Leupold Vari-X 2.5-8x32mm Extended E.R. scope with Leupold base and rings that replaced the rear site.
    I shoot the HSM 350gr JHP and Hornady 500gr XTP for target shooting and hunting deer and moose. So far, the Leupold scope, base and rings are holding up fine, but I must admit that I don't put a lot of rounds through it.

    • @AldoSchmedack
      @AldoSchmedack 3 дня назад

      Leupold would be my goto as well! VX2 or 3 in LER for pistols. Only had a single reticle alignment issue and only on one scope, never an issue with recoil problems or quality on a Leupold besides that and they drilled the glass and remade the scope completely at no cost for me. EXCELLENT service, best I ever had actually in the gun industry along with Gemtech, Brownells, MidwayUSA and Trijicon. Leupold and Gemtech by far the best. I greatly concur a Leupold is in order.

    I've dumped quite a few rounds through my 500, the same model shown here. I've always shot jacketed bullets, using the jacketed compensator. When you touch the powder off on that thing, it's not a task, it's an event of Biblical proportions. Loading a shovel-full of H110 behind a 325 grainer, you can see the muzzle flash from outer space. It's simply glorious. I've even two-fisted that caliber with my and my son in-laws pistols, it set me back about 6 inches straight south shooting at Bennett Mountain. The 2 slugs might have moved the mountain north a wee bit upon impact.

      When you shoot a 500 S&W it is like Chuck Norris doing pushups. Everything else and the entire world moves and Chuck and the gun stand still! 😂

    Hot 44mag can get uncomfortable. 454 is miserable for more than a few shots.... the 460 or 500 is just ridiculous. I'd have to pass.

  • @lindafoxwood9091
    @lindafoxwood9091 5 дней назад +14

    I remember when I bought my 44 mag S&W in 1987, i still have it too. I would fire it every weekend for 3 years while I was stationed at Fort Benning GA when I worked at the Airborne Jump tower as a printing press operator. I lived right down the street from the base range, sweet. I found that I could hold my arms and elbows at an angle to push the recoil up and not towards my body - I felt only 1/4 of the recoil. I still shoot that way today. I'm just saying. I mostly fire my 44 mag one handed with the same idea. The recoil has to be directed to to your side and not center (at you head - bad idea LOL). ❤

  • @AldoSchmedack
    @AldoSchmedack 3 дня назад +1

    Ron, as I said in chat, I asked a few folks and got a few answers on scopes (all long eye relief pistol versions onviously).
    1. Burris
    2. Leupold
    3. Eotech
    I guess they all seem to hold up to these super high recoiling revolvers and a few other smiths say to use the largest screws with finest threads you can for best clamping power and to use an extra ring if needed/able. It may need drilled and tapped special by a mill or auto centering/aligning drill jig with hardened inserts.
    TBH based on balistics you gave and went over it really could use a scope BUT you will loose ability to do fast close follow ups on charging animals.Those heavy weights are brutal and you should see the even more powerful ammo they make for these in even largest grain weights.
    Summary: great for largest animals that aren't charging and you have camo and concealment and are surprising them and using a scope.May be wise to pack a rifle in same caliber, a lever, too.
    Perhaps Jerry Miculek would have ideas on ways to adjust grip. He'd make a great guest as well btw. Be well Ron!

    • @AldoSchmedack
      @AldoSchmedack 3 дня назад

      PS Ron oh, and on the insert have S&W or a smith make a custom sight insert that moves the POI more the way you need, easiest way to fix the rear sight issue! Forgot that!

    I have owned my .500 S&W since 2004. I found only one scope and mounts that can stand up to the recoil and power. The Burris Handgun scope. 2-7x32. This scope has internal springs that are designed to handle the massive power of this gun. I sighted in my zero at 100 yards. It’s extremely accurate with 325 grain Hornady Rounds. However, if I shoot at targets much closer, say 50 yards or less, the vertical impact is off significantly.

    I have the 460 mag with a 10.5-inch barrel, and it's a tac driver. I have no trouble taking northern Michigan whitetail out to (my farthest) 143yrds. Yes, lots of practice and a good rest, and oh ya, a good scope, but the round is very capable.

  • @404nitro
    @404nitro 5 дней назад +2

    Lots of scopes can stand up to the recoil and that gun is drilled and tapped under the rear sight. I said this on your last video, but you need to shoot a F/A in 475 or 500 WE. The big 500 S&W isn't bad after shooting them. It isn't a power things. It's a weight thing (and no comp on them either)

  • @lylewalters909

    Ron…..I don’t want to be “that guy” pointing out “you’re not wearing eye protection”, or something, etc. However, I own that model in the 10-3/8” barrel. I get it. It’s cold outside, and it’s a heavy handgun, but I’m cringing every time you hold that gun around the cylinder while cocking the hammer. If you had a mishap and your thumb slipped, your left hand would get mangled. The blast coming out around that cylinder is no joke! To anyone who wants to disagree with me….you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about! Lastly, if that gun comes for sale, pass on it as there is something wrong with it. Nice to see some handgun stuff. Now review a T/C Contender in something like 7-30 Waters. 😊

    • @AldoSchmedack
      @AldoSchmedack 3 дня назад

      When I was new to shooting I did such a thing with just a smaller caliber and had an issue with digits ahead the cylinder and it wasn't fun. Took time to heal and learned my lesson early (2 wks). A 357 on up would destroy tissue big time. Always have to watch form when shooting a revolver except the Nagants.
      And yes to safety glasses for me except for .22lr's. And with steel targets, all guns! I had one come back at me once with steel core AP ammo even at distance (which I no longer use on steel as a result). Loose an eye and ya can't grow em back, at least I can't!
